From the Dean’s Desk Welcome to the 2016/17 Theatre Season at Florida State University. For 43 years, the School of Theatre at FSU has brought the thrill of live theatre to Tallahassee audiences, and if you have been with us before, you understand why our program has become one of the most renowned in the nation. You have seen students perform on this stage that went on to earn Broadway roles and others who now hold important leadership positions within the theatre community. Each and every one of our student actors – past and present – gain experience here at FSU that prepares them for a multitude of careers in theatre and beyond, and while the faculty and staff serve as their educators and mentors, your support by being here and playing the role of their audience, is equally important. I thank you for being a part of our theatre community and hope that you are enlightened and entertained by our performance today.

Peter Weishar Dean, College of Fine Arts

From the School of Theatre’s Executive Director

We at the School of Theatre are excited about the upcoming season and invite you to become a part of our journey. We are committed to a learning environment that builds on our rich past as it enters a new year – encouraging excellence, imagination, artistry, and leadership to empower our students to create the theatre of the future. This year at the School of Theatre, we hope that you will take great pleasure in exploring the bounty of our upcoming season. Together, we will have the opportunity to investigate what kinds of armor we put on in hopes of surviving the world around us. How being ourselves can be the greatest gift we can give and how in the end, love really does conquer all. Our ability to present theatre in meaningful ways depends on the deep and continued generosity of YOU – our patrons, donors, and community. It is fitting to take this moment to thank each of you for your varied and deep, individual connections and financial contributions to the School of Theatre. Thank you so much for being part of the arts in Tallahassee and especially with us here at the School of Theatre. We have prepared a feast and are pleased to welcome you, our guests. The curtain is going up and you will not want to miss a moment.

Cameron Jackson Executive Director, The School of Theatre

The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Montego Glover and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

A Note from the Dramaturg Yarrr me hearties! You’re about to embark on a voyage with some of the toughest pirates around, but this crew aren’t the only pirates sailing the high seas around Florida! Look for characters in the show whose names sound like those of famous pirates. One especially famous American pirate was Blackbeard. His real name was Edward Teach. Blackbeard was the bane of American merchants, but he is most notorious for his barricade of Charleston, SC. He only left Charleston alone after they sent him a chest of medicine to treat his sick crew. Blackbeard used his booty to purchase a town in North Carolina. The governor of Virginia was worried about having such a bad neighbor so he sent a ship to take Blackbeard down. In this fight, Blackbeard yelled, “You’ll never take me alive!” and they didn’t. For a great yarn about Blackbeard, check out Blackbeard’s Last Fight by Eric A. Kimmel at the Leon County Library. Black Caesar became a pirate after slavers captured him and other warriors off the coast of Africa. The slave ship that captured him went down off the coast of Florida. Caesar and a sailor he had befriended escaped in a long boat loaded with supplies and weapons and began their careers as pirates. To capture passing ships, they would approach in their long boat and pretend to be shipwrecked sailors; then they would take control of the ship and steal their treasure. Their loot is still missing. Treasure hunters search for it on Florida’s many islands. Don’t think that the ladies were sitting tamely at home. Anne Bonny and Mary Read were both members of the crew of the infamous Calico Jack. Mary Read was the wife of a sea captain. After her husband died, she disguised herself as a man and went to sea. Pirates captured her and she became a pirate herself! Anne Bonny’s father supported his family with the reward money he got for telling on pirates. Anne made friends with local pirates and eventually left her husband to join Calico Jack’s crew. The English Royal Navy attacked Calico Jack’s ship while the crew were under the weather after a late night of revelry. Only Mary and Anne were able to resist. Even these brave women couldn’t fight the Royal Navy all by themselves; the Navy captured the entire crew. Every pirate flew their own version of the Jolly Roger, the skull and crossed bones flag. Some skulls would grin, others would frown. Instead of bones, some pirates had crossed swords or guns on their flags. If you are going to set up as a pirate, make sure to make your own flag unique so the land-lubbers know what dread pirate just captured them.

Vocabulary Audience - The people watching a play. Also refers to the space where the people are seated to watch the play. Stage - The area of the theatre where the actors perform the play. Scenery - The background, furniture, and other large pieces that create the location of the play. Costume - The clothes worn by the actors during a performance. Curtain Call - A moment at the end of a play where the actors bow and receive applause from the audience.

Who’s Who Actor - A person who acts or performs in a play by playing a character. Playwright - A person who writes the words spoken in a play. At the Theatre... Attending How I Became a Pirate is a special experience that you and your family will remember for a long time. Everyone in the audience is looking forward to seeing the performance just as much as you, so it’s very important to remember the rules of theatre etiquette to ensure that everyone has a fantastic experience! Going to the theatre might seem a lot like going to the movies, but there is one big difference—the actors are performing live onstage, and they can see and hear what goes on in the audience, just as you can see and hear them. A few things to remember: • Stay with your family at all times. Wait for the ushers to help you find your seat. Seating is very limited and you must sit in your designated section. • Make sure you go to the restroom before the show. Leaving your seat in the middle of the performance disrupts the actors as well as the audience, plus you miss the best parts! • Don’t chew gum or eat during the performance. Everyone likes popcorn during the movies, but in the theatre we save the snacks for after the show. • The lights will dim just before the performance begins, and then go dark. The lights will come back up at the end of the play. • There is no talking or whispering during the performance. This can disturb the actors onstage as well as your fellow audience members. • You are encouraged to clap, laugh, and participate during the performance, but should not get up and move around. It may disturb others in the audience. • Show your appreciation by clapping. The actors love to hear applause. This shows how much you enjoyed it. • Do not leave your seat until the cast has taken their curtain call - or bow at the end. Applauding for the actors is a way you can show them how much you enjoyed the show.

What game would you teach the pirates? 7. What job would you like to try? Actor, director, designer, stage manager?

Why would you like to try that particular job? 8. Name three things that you noticed about the set and the lighting during the play. Name three sounds that you noticed throughout the play. 9. What are some of the new “Pirate words that you heard in the show?
