2017 - 2018 SEASON
From the Dean’s Desk Prepare to be amazed! Every time I sit where you are right now, I marvel at the magic our students create on that stage. For 44 years, the School of Theatre at FSU has brought the thrill of live theatre to Tallahassee audiences. Before this evening is over, you will see why our program has become one of the most renowned in the nation. Alumni who have performed here have gone on to prestigious careers on Broadway and in a multitude of other professions in theatre and beyond. While talent is a big part of their success, the hard work of our faculty and staff drive our students to excel. And you play an important role as well. Your attendance and support means the world to our students. Great actors need great audiences! Thanks for being a part of our theatre community. Enjoy the show!
Scott Shamp Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts
From the School of Theatre’s Executive Director
Our 44th year of bringing you the very best of Musicals and Dramas and showcasing students’ work on stage and off, in the shops and in the classroom. Our alumni are taking the world by storm and Playbill has once again ranked us in the top five of public university programs most represented on Broadway. Our season will focus on how we each define family, luck, fate, mischief, normal, and loyalty. Together, we will have the opportunity to investigate the definitions that we assign to these words and how our individual experiences shape their meanings. In the School of Theatre, we are committed to a learning environment that builds on our rich past as it enters a new year – encouraging excellence, imagination, artistry, and leadership to empower our students to create the theatre of the future. Our ability to present theatre in meaningful ways depends on the deep and continued generosity of YOU – our patrons, donors, and community. It is fitting to take this moment to thank each of you for your varied and deep, individual connections and financial contributions to the School of Theatre. Thank you so much for being part of the arts in Tallahassee and especially with us here at the School of Theatre.

The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/ educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Montego Glover and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

From the Dramaturg, Nick Richardson “The Citizens feel obliged to warn the public that this play deals with the case of a chronically retarded child and that not only the subject but the extraordinary way it is treated may possibly give offence. However such is the honesty of this play, and so grounded…in first-hand experience that we believe it entirely vindicates its production in our theatre.” - Citizens Theatre, 1967 So ran the warning published by the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland on all promotional materials for the world premiere of Peter Nichols’ A Day in the Death of Joe Egg in May 1967. The Citizens’ board members feared that the play’s representation of a child with cerebral palsy (or a “spastic,” in sixties’ medical terminology) was grotesque and stipulated that the production must include the above notice. Critics and audiences alike responded so favorably to the production that the Citizens removed their advisory after the first night. Having a character with disabilities was not the issue at hand; rather, the Citizens Theatre fretted over Nichols’ humorous approach to the heavy subject matter. Nichols brings levity to raising a daughter with cerebral palsy by playing with form, meshing kitchen-sink realism with other non-realistic theatrical styles: music hall variety performance, high farce, and even stand-up comedy. These presentational styles break the “fourth wall,” creating a direct relationship between the characters and the audience. This allows the characters to openly share their thoughts. Through their direct address, we see our protagonists Bri and Sheila use humor to cope with the challenges of raising their daughter, Joe, and maintaining a loving marriage. Though Nichols’ quasi-comic approach may seem unconventional – even tactless – it stems from his own life experience. He and his wife had a daughter with cerebral palsy who died at 10 years old, and he personally used humor when discussing his own family. Nichols does address Joe’s condition with an earnest realism at times, but the comic performances throughout the play suggest their own truth: humor as resistance against futility. In this light, Bri and Sheila’s coping tactics seem far more plausible. Today, 50 years since the play’s premiere, we still debate the same complicated questions at the heart of Bri and Sheila’s disputes. What constitutes “quality of life”? Who gets to decide what “quality of life” means? Who should make decisions about care for someone with limited faculties? Which decisions are right? The playwright offers no answers; instead, he employs comedy as a vehicle to present Bri’s and Sheila’s opposing perspectives on making the most of life – their daughter’s and their own.

LEARN MORE: THE TRUE STORY OF JOE EGG Many have argued that Peter Nichols wrote A Day in the Death of Joe Egg as a theatrical representation of his own familial struggles. It was noted that the titular character bore a resemblance to Nichols’ daughter, Abigail, who was mentally and physically disabled. In an 2002 interview, Nichols confirmed that the initial premise of the play was based upon his family, however, it was not until he moved the plot away from his personal life that the play evolved into its final state.

DISCOVER MORE: ALMOST BANNED A Day in the Death of Joe Egg almost did not make it onto stage. Before it even opened, it got into trouble with the censor for its controversial subject matter. The play was taken to Lord Chamberlain who believed the character of Josephine should be represented by a dummy rather than a real girl. After much deliberation, the play was allowed to be performed, but on the condition that a warning about its controversial content be included on all promotional materials. The play was then rejected by several theatres on The West End because they feared the risk was too high. Sending it to Citizens Theatre was a last resort. Despite its sensitive subject matter, the play did not receive a single complaint and the company was soon recognized as an important theatre for new and innovative work.
