The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/ educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

From the Director, Christopher Núñez The confection you are about to witness is pure unadulterated joy. This is a rare type of joy that is occasionally in short supply. We present it with love and goodwill in our hearts and we hope you’ll enjoy it. As this show was concocted, I reminded myself daily of the following things: too much of anything is as bad as too little and approach all things with a playful whimsy. When decisions of color, glitter, and sparkles were made - I erred on the side of overindulgence. Forgive me. I recognize that many young people in our audience may be walking into a theatre for the first time. We are all immensely grateful for the opportunity to spur imagination, educate, inspire, and create lifelong lovers of the arts. During the mounting of this production, pink became more than a color - it became an idea, an outlook. As Pinkalicious sings, “Pink is a color that brings peace and joy...” “...I won’t be satisfied, ’til the whole wide world is pink!” I hope as you leave the theatre today, you’ll continue to spread this idea of peace and joy like our title character and all the young people who chase rainbows. “I don’t think of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains.” - Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl
From the Dramaturg, Kasey Kopp It sparks thoughts of bubble gum. Princesses and fairies. Cotton candy and lemonade. An iconic doll and everything else “girly.” But for the girl in our show, Pinkalicious Pinkerton, it isn’t just part of her name or simply her favorite hue. It colors every aspect of her life! Pinkalicious The Musical is based on the best-selling book series Pinkalicious by Victoria Kann who based Pinkalicious on her own daughters. She wrote the book as an April Fool’s joke and sent it to friends and family, telling everyone that her daughters had turned pink after eating too many pink cupcakes! Let’s think pink! Have you ever wondered why pink is thought to be “girly”? Pink wasn’t always for girls! In the early 1900s, people chose pink clothes and toys for boys because it was considered to be “the more decided and strong color,” a toned down version of the bold red. Blue was considered to be more dainty and feminine. Color was not associated with gender until the late 1970s and 1980s when ultrasound technology allowed parents to know if they were having a boy or girl. This led to a rise in demand for specifically colored and gendered baby products. Although it’s uncertain exactly how and why this shift occurred, ultimately, companies chose blue for a boy and pink for a girl! The colors reinforce what we think we know about gender. When we see blue toys, we think of them (and their intended owners, boys) as ‘strong, masculine.’ Think about superheroes and action figures in blue packaging! Pink is considered to be more feminine, “girly, flowery” and what a princess or our protagonist, Pinkalicious, might wear. Pinkalicious thinks pink is for everyone, boys and girls! And while her brother and father are embarrassed to admit it initially, they learn about the power of pink and how a little pink on the palette is important to achieving a well-balanced, colorful life. Sometimes pink can be a little too much. It’s bright and loud. But Pinkalicous loves pink, and thinks that you can too. (Maybe just in moderation!) It’s more than a color to her…it’s a way of life, “it’s a color that brings peace and joy.” It’s a whole new way of thinking about the world. And Pinkalicious won’t rest until everyone’s palette has a little pink on it.

Who's Who Playwright: A person who writes the words spoken in a play Actor: A person who acts or performs in a play, by playing a character Director: A person who directs the action that takes place on stage Stage Manager: A person who is in charge of what happens backstage Designer: A person who imagines and designs drawings for some part of the production, and their drawings are used to create costumes, set, lighting, props, and sound Choreographer: A person who comes up with all of the dance moves and teaches them to the cast
Vocabulary Audience: The people watching a play

At the Theatre… Attending Pinkalicious The Musical is a special experience that you and your family will remember for a long time. Everyone in the audience is looking forward to seeing the performance just as much as you, so it’s very important to remember the rules of theatre etiquette to ensure that everyone has a fantastic experience! Going to the theatre might seem a lot like going to the movies, but there is one big difference—the actors are performing live onstage, and they can see and hear what goes on in the audience, just as you can see and hear them.
A Few Things to Remember: • Stay with your group at all times. Wait for the ushers to help you find your seat. Seating is very limited and you must sit in your assigned seat. • Make sure you go to the restroom before the show. Leaving your seat during the performance disrupts the actors as well as the audience, plus you miss the best parts! • Don’t chew gum or eat during the performance. Everyone likes popcorn during the movies but in the theatre we save the snacks for after the show. • The lights will dim just before the performance begins and then go dark. The lights will come back up at the end of the play. • There is no talking or whispering during the performance. This can disturb the actors onstage as well as your fellow audience members. • You are encouraged to clap, laugh, and participate during the performance, but please do not get up and move around. • Show your appreciation by clapping. The actors love to hear applause. This shows how much you enjoyed it! • Do not leave your seat until the cast has taken their curtain call – or bow – at the end. Applauding for the actors is a way you can show them how much you enjoyed the show.
Have a great time!
