Your attendance and support means the world to our students. Great actors need great audiences! Thanks for being a part of our theatre community. Enjoy the show!
Scott Shamp Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts
From the School of Theatre’s Executive Director Our 44th year of bringing you the very best of Musicals and Dramas and showcasing students’ work on stage and off, in the shops and in the classroom. Our alumni are taking the world by storm and Playbill has once again ranked us in the top five of public university programs most represented on Broadway. Our season will focus on how we each define family, luck, fate, mischief, normal, and loyalty. Together, we will have the opportunity to investigate the definitions that we assign to these words and how our individual experiences shape their meanings. In the School of Theatre, we are committed to a learning environment that builds on our rich past as it enters a new year – encouraging excellence, imagination, artistry, and leadership to empower our students to create the theatre of the future. Our ability to present theatre in meaningful ways depends on the deep and continued generosity of YOU – our patrons, donors, and community. It is fitting to take this moment to thank each of you for your varied and deep, individual connections and financial contributions to the School of Theatre. Thank you so much for being part of the arts in Tallahassee and especially with us here at the School of Theatre.

The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/ educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Montego Glover and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

From the Dramaturg, Marisa M. Andrews You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax. All you need is a book! This year The Cat in the Hat turns 60 years old. It was first published as a book back in 1957 by Dr. Seuss, and today you’ll get to see that story reimagined live, onstage here at Florida State University! We are so excited to have you here. Do you know how the story of The Cat in the Hat came about? Dr. Seuss’s friend, William Spaulding, gave him a list of 368 words that he thought every kid should know how to read and told Dr. Seuss that he was only allowed to write a story using these specific words (no “Grickly Gractus” in this tale!). Mr. Spaulding wanted a new book on the market that was fun, exciting, and encouraged early literacy. In the United States in the 1950s, a lot of young children had a difficult time learning to read. It took him over a year, but finally Dr. Seuss finished The Cat in the Hat – illustrations and all. And it’s been a hit with audiences of all ages ever since. The Cat is maybe Dr. Seuss’s most popular character from all of his books. What is your favorite character? Dr. Seuss’s was born on March 2, 1904, under the name Theodor Seuss Geisel. His family called him Ted. He didn’t start calling himself Dr. Seuss until he was a student at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, when he started drawing cartoons for his school newspaper and needed a nickname. “Seuss” was originally supposed to be pronounced like Zoice (“voice” with a ‘z’), but once people started pronouncing it Soose (“goose” with an ‘s’), it stuck. In addition to The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss wrote over 40 other children’s books during his lifetime. How many of his books have you read? One special element that you’ll see in this production is the use of puppets. Puppetry has been a part of theatre since ancient times and comes in many forms. Our production uses its own unique type of puppetry, developed from a type of puppetry called Czech Black Puppetry. The puppets are mounted onto sticks, and the puppeteers try to hide in the shadows of the stage as much as possible. Puppeteers (puppet-holders) are dressed all in black so that you will focus on the puppets themselves, and hopefully forget that there are people holding them. If you are really interested in puppets, think about taking a visit to the Center for Puppetry Arts – it’s quite close to us, in Atlanta, Georgia.

LEARN MORE: THE MAN BEHIND THE PEN Dr. Seuss was born as Theodor Seuss Geisel in 1904. It was not
until college that he began to draw under his famous pen name. In 1925, Geisel was banned from creating cartoons for Dartmouth College’s humor magazine, “Jack-O-Lantern” after the dean caught him and his roommates drinking. It was a direct violation of Prohibition law. Determined to continue contributing to the magazine, he began publishing cartoons under various pen names. Some names included T. Seuss, Theo LeSieg, and Dr. Theophrastus Seuss. He eventually adopted Dr. Seuss as his professional pseudonym in 1928.

DISCOVER MORE: SEUSS FOR ADULTS Dr. Seuss was the beloved creator of 44 classic children’s books, but you may not know is that he also wrote a book for adult readers. You’re Only Old Once! (A Book for Obsolete Children) was written in 1986 while Seuss was being treated for oral cancer. The story follows an old man in a bowtie who is being ushered through the medical industrial complex. It features all the bright colors and whimsical style that readers expected. The first reviews were unfavorable, but Seuss knew his audience. By the mid-1980s the boomers were entering middle age, and You’re Only Old Once! became a popular gag gift for people turning 40.

At the Theatre... Attending The Cat in the Hat is a special experience that you and your family will remember for a long time. Everyone in the audience is looking forward to seeing the performance just as much as you, so it’s very important to remember the rules of theatre etiquette to ensure that everyone has a fantastic experience! Going to the theatre might seem a lot like going to the movies, but there is one big difference—the actors are performing live onstage, and they can see and hear what goes on in the audience, just as you can see and hear them.
A Few Things to Remember: • Stay with your group at all times. Wait for the ushers to help you find your seat. Seating is very limited and you must sit in your assigned seat. • Make sure you go to the restroom before the show. Leaving your seat during the performance disrupts the actors as well as the audience, plus you miss the best parts! • Don’t chew gum or eat during the performance. Everyone likes popcorn during the movies but in the theatre we save the snacks for after the show. • The lights will dim just before the performance begins and then go dark. The lights will come back up at the end of the play. • There is no talking or whispering during the performance. This can disturb the actors onstage as well as your fellow audience members. • You are encouraged to clap, laugh, and participate during the performance, but please do not get up and move around. • Show your appreciation by clapping. The actors love to hear applause. This shows how much you enjoyed it! • Do not leave your seat until the cast has taken their curtain call – or bow – at the end. Applauding for the actors is a way you can show them how much you enjoyed the show.
Have a great time!

4. What was the funniest part in the play?
5. What did you learn from the play?
6. What role did the audience play in the production?
7. If you were an actor, what role would you want to play?
8. There are lots of people who make a play who are not actors. What kinds of things do you think they do?

Patrons Scholar Spotlight: Claire McCarthy Claire is a sophomore BA Theatre major from Marathon, Florida. Theatre is her greatest passion and she is excited to be getting more involved with all that the School of Theatre has to offer. Every day, she discovers new passions and makes new friends in the program. Claire appears on stage as a Puppeteer in today’s performance of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat. Last Spring, she worked on the costume crew for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. From that backstage experience, she gained a newfound respect for those who work off-stage to keep productions running smoothly and developed a passion for costumes. To the Patrons, Claire would like to say, “Every dollar helps, especially when it comes from such a wonderful organization that shares my passions and wants to help me reach my goals. I could not be more grateful to the Patrons that make this scholarship possible.”
