We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20212022 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education. For over 45 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country. After the last 18 months of unprecedented challenges, we hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you! - Brad Brock & Kris Salata

THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE From the Director, Fred Chappell It is common in theatre programs these days to read actors’ biographies that are filled with thanks—thanks to their parents, to friends, to institutions, to each other. Ordinarily I might use this program space to discuss the play, but given these extraordinary times, it is I who wish to thank those actors and stage managers who have given so admirably and untiringly of themselves to bring this play to life. Perhaps I should have entitled these notes, “Directing During a Pandemic” because the actors have had to brave most unusual and arduous circumstances leading up to tonight's performance. Who could ever have imagined rehearsing the rich and complicated texts of Shakespeare with masks covering mouths and half of the face? These actors braved the nearly impossible feat of this impairment right up until a few days before we opened. In our play the character “Jaques” intones, “Sweet are the uses of adversity” and we have had to adopt this as our mantra while the actors drilled tirelessly with detailed diction and overenunciation; daily precautions of health check-ins with a watchful eye for COVID symptoms; and absences due to exposures. Further appreciation must be expressed to those students who have understudied all of the roles in the play in case of an emergency. These dedicated souls showed up for rehearsals every night and memorized complex roles in which they may never appear and for which they may never hear applause. Let us remember, too, that all of these students are carrying full class loads during the day and rehearsing the play until eleven o'clock in the evening and that acting often requires the stamina and conditioning of an athlete. I write this so that you, the audience, might more fully appreciate the courageous work of these young actors. As their director, I am in awe of their devotion to the work and I offer them my own full respect and deepest appreciation.

DRAMATURG'S NOTE From the Dramaturg, Rowan Jalso Shakespeare has always been a master of portraying life, from the commoner to the king. As You Like It stands in an interesting role of having both types of characters, and they spend the majority of the time interacting with each other. In this play, the court of France is contrasted to the forest of Arden. I am sure than many would envision a world where, Cinderella-esque, the poorest of the poor end up living large in a palace, but in As You Like It, Shakespeare defies conventions and has royalty flee a stuffy and despotic court for the freedom of a magical, love drenched forest. As You Like It is a pastoral romantic comedy, which was very in-vogue for the discerning Elizabethan of 1598. For in this time Queen Elizabeth’s health was failing, cities were enacting harsh laws, and there were fears of travelers and vagabonds causing trouble in the streets of London. Who wouldn’t want to take some time in a calm, beautiful forest, full of peaceful, simple shepherds and shepherdesses who care not for court affairs, and who only live for love? Pastoral comedies and pastoral romances (and this play is both) value the simple cottage life and eschew pompous city living. In order to convey this, we have decided to reset the time period to the era of 1960s hippy love. The sentiment of that time echoes what Shakespeare tried to create in his original work; a love of life and a desire to be free of the stuffy conventions of politics. With a groovy-tastic soundtrack and aesthetic, the universal messages of As You Like It have found a home in the Woodstock-colored Arden. The nobles, who in Shakespeare’s time fled for a Robin Hood life, are now government officials who desire to be less Nixon and more Beatles. So join us for a wonderful romp through a magical forest and see if you end up as charmed by this simple, pastoral romantic comedy as the Elizabethans of old were.

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: MAGGIE MAE CREASMAN Maggie Mae Creasman (she/her) is a senior Theatre major from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. You may recognize her from FSU productions such as Men on Boats, Antigone, Hamlet, The True Story Three Little Pigs, Mr. Burns Post Electric Play, or Eurydice. The crowd’s energy inspired her for the next four years and showed her the support that FSU students have for their peers. After she graduates, Maggie hopes to travel the world and experience as much theatre as possible. Her dream job is to perform at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London. Maggie would like to thank the Patrons Association members from the bottom of her heart. “I have seen how Patrons’ support leads to incredible successes at the School of Theatre. We would not be able to do what we do without you, and I’m so grateful to have received this scholarship.”
