We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20212022 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education. For over 45 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country. After the last 18 months of unprecedented challenges, we hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you! - Brad Brock & Kris Salata

THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

NOTES From the Director, Patdro Harris Magic... we could all use a little bit more of these days. Rodger & Hammerstein's updated version of Cinderella about the Haves and the Have Nots has plenty of magic. The Haves learning to share and the Have Nots learning to believe. Not only romantic love in this version but also the love of community. How can we see the magic in each other? Cinderella is reminding us that we all have dreams and we all have something valuable inside of us... life! What a beautiful time in American history to make magic. The magic of live theatre actors, set, lights, props, sound, and backstage crew all collaborating together to create this fairy tale. As the director and choreographer, it is such a treat to watch it all come together here at FSU. Cinderella... Music, Love, and Magic. We hope this production brings out the Magic in you. From the Dramaturg, Elaine Hendriks Smith You can find Cinderella in stories created worldwide going back thousands of years. This universal story varies from culture to culture except for one element that patiently remains, the character of Cinderella. When Rodgers and Hammerstein decided to create a musical adaptation of Cinderella, they chose the French version (written in 1697), entitled Cendrillon. Charles Perrault introduces Cinderella as full of goodness and kindness in this version. Cinderella's traits reminded Richard Rodgers of a twenty-two-year-old Julie Andrews, starring as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady on Broadway. Because Rodgers and Hammerstein were writing Cinderella for CBS television and not the theatre, they could secure Julie Andrews for three weeks to rehearse and do a live taping of the show. The buzz around the airing of Cinderella was so great that the other television stations put up the colored bars of a testing screen during the show. Over 107 million people, more than sixty percent of the entire U.S. population, tuned in on March 31, 1957. Live taping meant special effects were out of the question, so the production team had to figure out a way to change Cinderella from rags to a ball gown while the cameras were on her. In his book Hammerstein, Oscar Andrew Hammerstein (the grandson of Oscar Hammerstein) writes that to accomplish this feat; first, the wardrobe staff surrounded Julie Andrews just off-camera until the moment arrived. They were then covered by the throwing of a tremendous amount of glitter as they quickly pulled her new dress over her head and her old dress down to the floor. Then, as the camera slowly zoomed out on the newly transformed Cinderella, the wardrobe staff changed her shoes while laying on the ground beneath the camera. Once they finished, covered in glitter, they crawled off the set with her rag costume in hand. All the while, Julie Andrews held firm and stood gracefully selling the magic we all have come to love in our version of Cinderella. Critics and audiences fell in love with this adaptation of Cinderella. The first theatrical production (London, 1958) set a precedent when the show was expanded and adapted for the stage. Over the years, the show has seen much change. Storylines get added, songs characters change, but amidst all of the hustle and bustle, one thing remains the same, the grace, kindness, and patience of Rogers & Hammerstein's beloved Cinderella.

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: JERRY TRUONG Jerry Truong is a junior from Tampa, Florida. He is a first-generation Asian-American college-student double majoring in Theatre and Asian Studies with an Emphasis in Business. Jerry spends a lot of his time working with the Vietnamese Student Association on campus as their Senior Advisor. His favorite School of Theatre memory is Performance 1 with Chari Arespacochaga. He was able to collaborate with talented classmates, and it opened doors for him to explore theatre and meet more extraordinary people in the SOT. Jerry wants to thank the Patrons Association for their generous donations. "As a college student who comes from a low-income household, your scholarship has helped me immensely! I have never asked my parents for financial assistance because they have already given up so much just so that I can be here at college. Anything you give really helps me, and being selected for this has relieved some pressure off my shoulders, so thank you so much again.”
