2021-2022 SEASON

WELCOME TO THE SHOW!

Brad Brock Director, School of Theatre Florida State University

Kris Salata Chair, School of Theatre Florida State University

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20212022 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education. For over 45 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country. After the last 18 months of unprecedented challenges, we hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you! - Brad Brock & Kris Salata

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT The School of Theatre is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE From the Director, Mary Gundlach Described as “a refreshing contrast to an obsession with historical accuracy,” Jacklyn Backhaus’s Men on Boats unfastens the American tale by recounting the U.S. government’s first sanctioned expedition through 21st century voices. A hilariously edgy retelling of history based on John Wesley Powell’s well documented journals, this comedic tale questions what history truly is and whose story is told by whom. To Powell’s crew, all that matters is the answer to the question, “So, what should we name that mountain?” with little to no consideration for the Native people who have cared for the land for centuries. After all, the manifest destiny (a term coined just twenty years prior the expedition) posed that the “expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable.” Backhaus turns our traditional view of American history on its head with a comedic effect that illuminates the pure ludicrousness of this doctrine by unraveling it from our preconceived notions of westward expansion. Staying true to Jacklyn Backhaus’s intention of a racially diverse cast made up of those who are female-identifying, trans-identifying, genderfluid, and/or non-gender conforming, we are given the opportunity to challenge the traditional teachings of U.S. history. The unrepresented voices and stories that could have been told throughout history have motivated every creative choice you see before you. We hear the playwrights voice distinctly through the Chief of the Ute tribe, Tsauwiat and his wife, The Bishop. Encouraging the truth of this tribe’s story, we begin to wash away the imprint of the manifest destiny by having the actors appear in a design reflecting the traditional Ute garments and introducing the scene with an original recording of the Bear Dance, a Ute ritual that is still practiced today that signifies the beginning of spring. It is our great hope that this theatrical experience serves as an impetus for every audience member to discover what other untold stories are out there and that you are compelled to support these communities in whatever way you are able. With fresh eyes we can seek our country’s history in its wholeness by anchoring ourselves in the truth of the experiences of its unheard people, and not only those who had the privilege of a voice.

DRAMATURG'S NOTE From the Dramaturg, Rebecca Curran When I began my research for Men on Boats, I was able to find loads of information on John W. Powell – books, articles, even a video where a man in a (very obviously) fake beard talks to the audience as Powell. The other men were much harder to find. Aside from their participation in the expedition and, for many of them, their army records from the Civil War, their lives have largely been lost to history. Some recent scholars, such as Dan Lago, have been able to dig a bit deeper and construct a fuller picture of the nine men who set out with Powell in May of 1869: “Old Shady,” a.k.a. Walter Henry Powell, John’s younger brother who was emotionally scarred from his experience in a Confederate prison hospital; the Howland brothers, O.G. and Seneca, who played a huge part in assembling the group and securing additional funding; English adventurer Frank Goodman; George Young Bradley, who kept his own secret account of the trip in his diary; John C. Sumner, a highly-skilled outdoorsman who remained haunted by the men during journey; Andrew Hall, the youngest of the men who had left home to go West at age 16; and Willian Dunn and William Hawkins, both men with “shadowy” pasts who were trappers and hunters in the Rockies before joining Powell. Playwright Jaclyn Backhaus’s piece opens up the story to include these men as main players in the action rather than simply disciples of Powell. She goes a step further by having them embodied by a cast of those whose voices have also traditionally been erased from history, specifying that “The characters in Men on Boats were historically cisgender white males. The cast should be made up entirely of people who are not.” The result, especially in this production under the leadership of director Mary Gundlach, is a story that feels surprisingly modern and alive rather than the revered historical tale it often becomes in other retellings. You’d be forgiven for forgetting at times that the story you’re watching is from over 150 years ago!
