From the College of Fine Arts’ Dean Hello and welcome! It is a pleasure to have you with us. There is a long tradition of exceptional arts here at Florida State University. The School of Theatre continues that tradition with its recent ranking among the top ten programs in the country in The Princeton Review’s list for “Best College Theatre.” In this season, you see why we’ve earned such distinction. Our outstanding faculty and dedicated staff enable us to attract and retain some of the most talented aspiring performers and theatre professionals. And, we couldn’t be prouder of what they accomplish. (Look for our alum among the brightest stars of stage, screen, and academe – out front, behind the scenes, and in classrooms and studios.) I trust that you will enjoy the performance and I encourage you to make FSU Theatre a regular part of your arts and culture activities. Thank you for your patronage and for energizing the cast and crew with your presence. It means the world to us. Now, enjoy the show! James Frazier Dean, College of Fine Arts
From the School of Theatre’s Executive Director Welcome to the School of Theatre at Florida State. I want to thank you for joining us to celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create the production you are seeing today. For over 45 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as advocates, leaders, artists, and theatre-makers across the world. It is no wonder that the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country. While at Florida State, our students gain experience that prepares them for a multitude of careers and none of this would be possible without our dedicated faculty and staff and the support from members of our community. Thank you again for joining us today and for supporting the School of Theatre at Florida State – we could not do it without you. Enjoy the show! The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/ educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

From the Director, Michael D. Jablonski We are Proud to Present a Presentation about the Herero of Namibia, Formerly known as South West Africa, From the German Südwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915 by Jackie Sibblies Drury, poses many questions to challenge us as a society. It asks us, what is our responsibility to the stories that we tell and to the owners of those stories? In this day and age, when we engage with information on a “sound byte” level, what is our role in sifting through the rhetoric and extracting useful meaning, and how can we learn and grow from our failures? We are Proud to Present…, has a unique way of using theatrical conventions to investigate prejudice, power, and perspective. It does what good theatre is supposed to do; it starts conversations by inspiring and illuminating the present and the past. It asks the audience to approach this show with an open mind and willingness to be present. It challenges us to take a step forward in our continuing but complicated conversations about society and race. I hope you will join the dialogue.
From the Dramaturg, Hannah Fazio How do we tell a story when we do not have all the information? Do we have the right to tell a tory that does not really “belong” to us? These are some of the questions posed by Jackie Sibblies Drury in We are Proud to Present a Presentation about the Herero of Namibia, Formerly South West Africa, From the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915. The play features a metatheatrical, play-within-a-play structure; the plot centers around a group of actors who try (and fail) to tell a story about the Herero genocide in Namibia. Through the actors’ failure, Sibblies Drury interrogates global colonial history and American race relations of the present day. The play, complicated and dynamic like race in the United States, raises difficult questions and refuses easy answers. Jackie Sibblies Drury (who won the Pulitzer Prize in drama in 2019 for her play Fairview) asks us to consider how racialized scripts of the 19th century reappear in the 21st, how traumas from the past linger in our own bodies, and how performance can work to heal those traumas...or open them up.

Patrons Scholar Spotlight: Nina Bodony Nina Bodony is a junior Theatre and Communications double major with a minor in Education from Bonaire, GA. She was last seen on stage in There is a Field (Nardeen) and Precious Stones (Rachel). She directed last spring’s Act II production of Machinal and currently serves as Artistic Director of the Student Theatre Association. Her dream is to direct a musical on Broadway one day and plans to move to New York City after graduation. Her favorite School of Theatre memory is from her freshman year working as run crew on Guys and Dolls. She had an absolute blast learning how professional theatre works behind the scenes and made some of her best friends within the program through that production. She was able to attend the London Theatre Academy this past semester with a scholarship from the Patrons Association. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity. I would not be able to study abroad and learn so much about theatre if it weren’t for you.”
