HE FIRST STEP TO BECOME A SKILLFUL PLAYER is to learn the basic playing strategy. Many players believe they know the basic strategy. It’s been my experience that beginning players, who are serious about learning how to win, are usually enthusiastic about wanting to learn basic strategy. Experienced players, on the other hand, scoff at reading or learning about basic strategy because, “They know that stuff.” Well, if you are an “experienced player,’’ let’s see how much you really know about basic strategy. Jot down how you would play these hands; unless otherwise stated, assume a standard 6-deck game, dealer stands on soft 17, and doubling down after pair splitting is permitted.
You have 10-2 and the dealer shows a 3.
You have 8-8 and the dealer shows a 10.
You have 6-5 and the dealer shows a 10.
You have 10-6 and the dealer shows a 7.
You have ace-7 and the dealer shows a 9.
You have an ace-10 and the dealer has an ace. The dealer asks if you want even money. Should you take it?
You have 2-3-ace and the dealer shows 4.
You have 10-4 and the dealer shows an ace but doesn’t have blackjack. The casino allows surrender.
You have 9-9 and the dealer shows a 9.
You have Ace-8, and the dealer shows a 6. The rules specify that the dealer must hit soft 17.
THE CORRECT BASIC STRATEGY PLAYS FOR THE ABOVE HANDS IN ORDER ARE:
If you got some wrong, don’t fret, because the majority of blackjack players, even experienced players, flunk this quiz, which is why casinos continue to profit from a game that theoretically can be beaten. TO GET THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BLACK JACK, visit

HETHER YOU’R E V ISITING A MEGACASINO IN LAS VEGAS, or a small one in your own town, one of the constants at just about every property is entertainment. Casinos know that one of the biggest attractions is the entertainment they offer, and staff are always looking for unique and engaging acts to help draw gamers to the tables and machines. But what’s it like to be the man or woman behind the microphone, travelling town to town, up and down the aisles? To find out, we spoke with casino entertainer Terry Parrett, who presents his comedy hypnosis show, “EnTRANCED: The Hypno-Reality Show,” at casinos around the country. A typical working day for Terry starts with a plane ride. Living in New York, he has several airports to choose from, and he usually gets going around 4 or 5 a.m. to get to the one with the most convenient and cheapest flights to his destination. Once he lands, he’ll rent a car and drive to the casino. He tries to arrive several hours before show time in order to do a sound and light check and make sure the stage is set properly for his show (his “tech rider” calls for 20 straight-back armless chairs to be onstage). Then, after all that, he checks in at the hotel. “One of the best parts about casino work is staying in all these wonderful hotels for free,” Terry said. “They also include complimentary meals, so I always need to watch my calories. Those buffets can really add up!” After freshening up and having dinner, Terry heads backstage to wait until show time. The backstage experience varies quite a bit from casino to casino. In some places, he will have a dressing room with a snack tray, beverages and all the niceties. In others, however, Terry’s “dressing room” will be a utility room filled with custodial equipment. Regardless, when he hits the stage, he’s ready to go. “One of the best things about being a comedy hypnotist is that every show is different, and I usually end up laughing as much as everyone in the audience,” Terry said. His show usually runs between 75 and 90 minutes, and he invites volunteers onstage to be hypnotized and become part of the show. Unlike many Las Vegas acts, Terry’s show is a “clean” show. He notes that many of the casinos he works with are either tribal casinos or in more conservative markets, and the types of hypnosis skits audiences enjoy in Las Vegas would not be as well received in other parts of the country. He says he’s made every effort to make sure that everyone leaves the show laughing and NOT offended by any X-rated material. The biggest difference between performing in a casino and a more traditional venue is that in a casino, a performer always needs to remember that his or her main job is to get people in the door. It’s important to do a great show, of course, but casinos 24 |
are in the gaming business. Terry recalls a few times when he was booked to perform at VIP shows. The casinos had given away several hundred tickets, but only a handful of people came to the show. He expected the casinos to be upset with the attendance, but in following up after the show, he learned they were delighted with the event. As it turns out, the VIPs came to the casino planning on seeing the show, but once they were in the door, decided to play instead. From the casino’s point of view, the night was a terrific success. Terry notes that he’s learned to keep his ego in check when he works at casinos. As long as they’re happy, he’s happy. After the show is over, Terry enjoys visiting the casino floor. He’ll usually head to play bar-top video poker. One of his favorite post-show stories: “I just wrapped up a really fun show at a tribal casino in California, and my wife and I sat down at the bar. I threw in a 20, and three hands in, I hit a Royal Flush! I left that show with an extra $1,000 in my pocket! Definitely one of my more memorable shows!” Depending on his schedule, he will either fly back to New York the next day, or head off to another show in a nearby area. Terry says that his wife, Jennifer, will often accompany him when her work schedule allows. “It’s a fantastic lifestyle,” he said. “We love to travel, we love to visit casinos, and I get paid to do it.” If you happen to see Terry advertised at your local casino, make sure to come down and get “entranced.”

Player Strategy
Video Poker: Strategies for Double Deuces
I
n an earlier issue, I gave you pay tables found on the same machine for two different deuces wild games. Of course you’ll choose the one that has an ER of 99.6206% and a variance of 50.98954 over the version with an ER of 94.8182% and variance of 25.25351. The best game may have a whopper of a variance and thus constitute a big risk to your bankroll, but it’s more than compensated for by the huge difference in the theoretical return. (Refer to the November/ December issue to see both pay schedules and comparisons.) You will need to know the basic game strategy and should put the pay schedule into your tutorial software (Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker is my favorite) for the best home practice. If you’re just interested in some strategy tips for the basics of this game, here they are. 1. Dealt Two Pair: Hold just one pair—either one, but not both. Be aware that there are some deuces wild (DW) games where you should hold both pairs but this is not one of them. 2. Dealt Wild Royal (WR): Hold all five cards. Even if you have four cards to a natural royal flush (RF) you still hold all to the WR. This is a frequent and costly error made by many who I’ve observed playing. Dealt 4 to a RF, you will get a natural RF one out of 47 tries statistically, but it will not make up for the money lost on WR’s.
3. Dealt Three Deuces: Hold all cards. The only exception is if you are dealt a WR. If dealt any WR, even with three deuces, you hold all to the WR. I see frequent player errors when all to either 5 of a Kind (5OAK) or a SF are held instead of just the three deuces. True you could end up sacrificing a dealt 5OAK to a lesser paying hand, but statistically you will be ahead by holding just the 3 deuces. 4. Dealt Two Deuces: Hold all 5 cards dealt a WR, 5OAK, SF or 4OAK. Hold 4 cards to a WR. Do not hold a straight, flush or 4 to a SF; instead, hold just the 2 deuces.
20 |
GAMINGANDDESTINATIONS.COM
by
Li n da B oy d
5. Dealt Straight: Hold all cards with either 0 or one deuce. If two of the cards are deuces (see rule 4) then hold just the two deuces. Note that a straight is different from a SF. 6. Dealt Flush: Hold all cards with either 0 or one deuce. If two of the cards are deuces (see rule 4) then hold just the two deuces. Note that a flush is different from a SF. Make sure you understand that you can never use recent but past results to predict future dealt hands. In other words, even if you just had a RF or 4 deuces the odds of getting either a RF or 4 deuces on the next hand are unchanged. If you want to play computer-perfect or close to it you will need to practice at home on tutorial software or use the appropriate strategy card in the back of my book, “The Video Poker Edge.”

PLAYER STRATEGY
HORSERACING: Scared Money Doesn't Win HAVE BET AT LEAST ONE c-note ride on every Triple Crown race since 1998. While some of you may be thinking “big deal,” many others could not possibly comprehend why anyone would risk losing a day’s pay on the outcome of a horserace.
I
I will admit that I threw away most of my 20’s attempting to become a professional handicapper, but it gets old trying to survive until payday with $8 in your wallet. These days I’m content to sit back and enjoy thoroughbred racing’s majesty with a $20 bankroll. When the scent of spring fills my nostrils, I revert to the mind-set that the “Sport of Kings” can be beat. However, I’ll be the first to testify it’s going to take more than a double sawbuck (that’s gambling slang for $20) to retire in Maui. So if you also harbor fantasies about telling your boss to “have a nice day,” gambling’s foremost axiom must be surrendered to. If a player is serious, and I do mean serious, about consistently walking out of the racetrack or OTB with more liquidity than they walked in with, then know…Scared Money Doesn’t Win. I strongly recommend that you paint this priceless anecdote on the ceiling of your bedroom in 12inch bold letters, so when the alarm goes off in the morning its wisdom can be meditated upon. I personally go so far as to write the aforementioned statement atop the day’s Daily Racing Form before even cracking it open. Obsessive-compulsive you say? Well before you break out the long black robe and gavel, let’s attach a definition to today’s tutorial. Sure “scared money doesn’t win,” but the phrase is not to be taken literally. George Washington is cooler than a cucumber on the front of that dollar bill, but you on the other hand may be suffering from what many gamblers refer to as “The Fear.” “A fear of what?” In response I emphatically declare, “of losing your money!” Receiving a 0% ROI (return on investment) at the racetrack cripples the spirit and manifests a feeling of dread that churns deep in the intestines like undigested fatback. This fear will
by

intensify if players find themselves trapped in the snare of an extended losing streak, and it certainly has the propensity to swell in correlation with a player’s monetary misery. When they hit the skids most turf enthusiasts still rouse the stones to gamble, but they play with “scared money.” Perhaps a rational method of reducing the average bet is applied to curb further angst, but herein is entangled the temptation to play exotics, which inherently carry more risk than standard straight wagers. For example, a hard-luck patron will invariably pass on betting $10 to win on a viable 3-1 shot for a cheaper dollar exacta that ultimately costs them $30 in profit because a 74-1 shot somehow runs second. Need a clearer picture? “Scared money” is falling in love with a runner assigned odds of 8-1 and betting him to show. Of course you will see this racer crush the field by six lengths and return $18.20 to win, but a diluted show payout of $5.60 is the reward for those who played it safe. I’m sorry to tell you this, but the only way to break free from wagering with “scared money” is to disregard its numeric value and desperately clutch personal conviction concerning the outcome of an upcoming race. Now, I’m not asserting this way of thinking is easy to embrace. When a horseplayer’s bank statement deteriorates over a short period of time, the mind clouds over and a sort of pandemonium ensues. Suddenly foolishness is rampant and betting $200 on a 4/5 shot to place so $40 can be netted sounds like a good idea. Souls seated outside insanity’s grip can see how ridiculous this notion is. On the other hand, while in total free fall, the handicapper only cares about stopping the bleeding, not about adhering to sound gambling doctrine. Have you ever seen an NBA basketball player miss five straight three pointers, but beg for the ball so he can let another shot fly from downtown? This is called having a short memory, and handicappers should strive to include similar unconventional logic into their skill set.

n its own, a slot tournament is an incomparable experience, wonder f u l ly capt u r ing t he excitement and anticipation that the casino environment can create for people. But when you take that slot tournament, structure it as a national competition, invite participation among properties and players across the nation, and hang up a $1 million championship prize, you have the ingredients for a “can’t miss” thrill of a lifetime. That’s what makes the TournEvent of Champions® 2016, coming soon to a casino near you, so special. Tied to no single casino brand, the tournament is a veritable “open” competition for slot enthusiasts as well as the casino properties that host it.
First held in 2012 as regional events in California and Washington, the concept is the brainchild of Linda Trinh, the vicepresident of marketing and promotions for Everi Holdings Inc., a leading provider of content, technology, and gaming-related software to the global casino industry. One of Everi’s award winning products is the trademarked TournEvent®, a slot tournament system that gives casino 16

operators the ability to convert slot machines into tournament mode easily and seamlessly with the click of a mouse.
an experience that most people will never have. The tournaments we hosted on site did just that.”
Trinh’s idea to market the TournEvent system as a solution for casinos to allow software to simplify the creation of the coveted world-class slot tournament was to formulate collaboration between Everi Holdings and casinos across the country through a national slot tournament.
That experience really paid off for their guests.
“I am proud to say TournEvent of Champions is my baby,” Trinh said. “We have seen it grow from a regional event with $25,000 in cash prizes to a national competition with a prize of over $1 million to the champion.” Trinh characterized the involvement of Everi in TournEvent of Champions as a “third party.” This unique industry alliance creates a win-win-win proposition among Everi, the properties, and the players themselves. “We have an opportunity to bring scope and excitement to gaming jurisdictions without taking their business,” Trinh explained. “TournEvent of Champions allows casinos of any size to participate and have an opportunity to create a firstclass tournament environment and the chance for players to compete for a $1 million prize.” Barry McGrady, director of gaming at Little River Casino Resort in Manistee, Mich., knows first-hand what this impact brought to his player base. “Last year was the first year we signed up to participate,” McGrady said. “The resort saw this as an opportunity to generate interest in our property as well as create excitement with our guests by delivering
“They had a great time,” he continued. “The TournEvent program has been great to work with and it really added value to how our tournaments were being run. They are fun, interactive, and create high energy with our guests by giving them the opportunity to engage and challenge other players in each round.” FINALLY FINALISTS Mike and Lori Makowski of Traverse City, Mich., have personal knowledge of the Everi TournEvent of Champions experience. The husband and wife team are past tournament finalists. Lori, representing Turtle Creek Casino in their hometown, finished 10th in 2013 when the championship was held at the Venetian in Las Vegas. Mike was a finalist from Little River Casino last year at Wynn Las Vegas XS Night Club. “I won $2,000 for my 10th place finish and had the time of my life,” Lori said. “It was our first slot tournament experience. We had so much fun. There is nothing to
compare to the excitement. It was truly an unbeatable time.” Lori admitted the competition can be intense, especially the anticipation of progressing through the rounds of play, but she had a way of breaking the tension. “I loved to rub ‘The Money Man’s’ head,” she said, making reference to the iconic face and character of the TournEvent of Champions mascot. “I also loved all the excitement the announcer brought to the competition. He was great.” “I didn’t do as good as my wife in my tournament,” Mike chimed in. “But all the fun we had made up for it.” Mike’s button-pushing technique? “Fast and furious,” he said without a moment’s hesitation. So just what is it about slot tournaments that players crave and casinos are eager to deliver? Slot tournaments are truly in a class by themselves. By the very nature of slot play, success or failure in them is founded on pure luck. But try to explain that to the participants themselves or the rooting galleries behind them! The players can be a study in concentration, their eyes riveted on the reels that spin before them as they ring up combinations of winning and losing symbols. They can be as intensely competitive as poker players as they employ their own particular style of button-pushing in an attempt to lock into a winning rhythm. They can be quiet or they can be loud— VERY loud—as they shout encouragement to their electronic cohorts. They can tap the play button or they can pound it. Players of every persuasion may be found at any given tournament. Some slot tournament participants insist upon wearing a glove on their playing hand to protect their precious digits, the accessory almost an armament to battle. They are the warriors of the casino, pugilists determined to outsmart the computer program against which they’re pitted while at the same time intimidating their opponents, not to mention Dame Fortune. Players may opt to surround themselves with lucky charms of all to entice Lady Luck to smile kindly upon them, or they may engage in mystical rituals, such as wearing certain clothing, eating special foods, or doing something the very same way they did it the last time they won in
fervent hope of a repeat performance. For slot tournament players, the onearmed bandit can be their best friend or their worst enemy, their source of unlimited joy or taunting frustration, their ticket to riches or their bitter disappointment. When you win, you feel like hugging your machine. When you lose, you feel like kicking it. It’s an experience every dedicated slot player deserves to have, and thanks to Everi and TournEvent of Champions, it’s all possible. Even Trinh herself is ecstatic with the leaps and bounds by which her “baby” has grown, knowing its meteoric rise in popularity is an expression of the casinos themselves. REEL GOOD TIMES The first “real” TournEvent of Champions was held in 2013. Eighty-eight players representing 77 casinos competed for the first national title and a $100,000 grand prize. The next year, which saw Wynn Las Vegas XS Night Club host the finals for the first time, 123 finalists from 104 casinos battled for $500,000 in prize money. Last year, the first millionaire was minted from among a quarter of a million players from 99 casinos in the United States, Canada, and even Peru. One hundred and eighty-two finalists went to the championship of the $1.4 million competition, won by Rita Kellerman, who represented Ho-Chunk Gaming in the Wisconsin Dells.
grow. Several new markets are represented by properties eager to create a never-before felt experience for their player bases. Two things are certain. First, The Money Man® will make a personal appearance at each participating property to encourage and cheer on the players, and second, each participating casino will receive a Norwegian Cruise Line package to be given away during the qualifiers. The cruise package is for seven days and is valued at $1,500. Once the individual casino competitions get under way, each winning representative will receive $800 in round-trip airfare for two to Las Vegas; four-night hotel accommodations; transfers to and from McCarran International Airport; food and beverage credit; and of course a seat in the championship finals boasting over $1.3 million in prizes. The championship finals are scheduled for September 28 at the Wynn Las Vegas XS Night Club. So bring along whatever makes you feel lucky to a participating casino and give those reels a spin for a chance to become a millionaire in the gaming world’s true slot championship. Starting in the spring and continuing through the end of Aug ust, each participating casino has the ability to structure its semi-finals and finals however they choose. Everi’s promotions team provides properties with the general guidelines. An assigned Everi promotions specialist works with each casino to ensure each TournEvent of Champions tournament is a success. Properties are free to schedule the events when they choose. In so doing, some casinos will host a single event while others stretch out the semi-final tournaments over a period of time. Some casinos choose to charge a buy-in for players to participate, some tournaments are free, while still others are by VIP invitation. Many casinos are already on board to participate in this year’s 5th TournEvent of Champions, and the list continues to G A M I N G A N D D E S T I N AT I O N S . C O M |

re you a slot aficionado? If so, you need to continue reading this column.
board games. Two of the most popular slot machines in history are Monopoly and Wheel of Fortune.
Let’s start by understanding what the word ‘aficionado’ actually means. The definition per the highly acclaimed MerriamWebster Dictionary is ‘a person who likes, knows about, and appreciates a usually fervently pursued interest or activity.” A person can be a movie aficionado, a food aficionado or even a wine aficionado. One of my favorite magazines is called Cigar Aficionado published for cigar enthusiasts. And, if you are reading this magazine, you are probably a casino aficionado.
W hen it comes to designing and manufacturing these machines, slot developers turn to aficionado’s like you to give them feedback on what you like, and don’t like, before they go into full scale production.
According to reliable sources, approximately seventy percent of casino gamers enjoy playing slot machines and slot revenue for casinos accounts for nearly the same percentage. Just take a look around the next casino you visit and notice the amount of floor space dedicated to the machines.
