An Old Fashioned cocktail

Ingredients 1 1/2 oz Bourbon or Rye whiskey 2 dashes Angostura bitters 1 Sugar cube A few dashes of plain water

or most people, if retirement isn’t already a reality by the age of 64, it’s certainly looming nearby.

But Jay Leno isn’t “most people.” Unlike his predecessor Johnny Carson, who spent his post-“Tonight Show” years in semiseclusion, Leno has continued a schedule that would exhaust someone half his age. His tour schedule for 2015 currently stands at more than 100 shows, including an appearance in Tunica at Horseshoe Casino on May 29, and Harrah’s Cherokee Casino on May 30.

For those who have never seen Leno perform live, it’s exciting to see such an iconic face right in front of you, and yet the material and delivery are as comfortable as a favorite chair. Leno himself once referred to his style of performing as “good food at reasonable prices”. His material is always topical, sometimes gently barbed, but never too edgy for his audience, which tends to sport a bit more gray than a typical comedy club crowd. Audiences coming to the shows at Cherokee and Horseshoe should expect 90 minutes of finely honed jokes about current events, celebrities, and pop culture foibles.

Leno’s familiarity and popularity with casino audiences should come as no surprise. For years, he would wrap up a week’s work on “The Tonight Show” on Thursday night, and fly to Vegas for a weekend of shows at Caesar’s, Paris Las Vegas, or his current Vegas venue, the Terry Fator Theater at the Mirage. When he wasn’t working in Las Vegas, he could be found doing a full weekend of shows somewhere else around the US. Some readers may be surprised to learn that all during Leno’s 20 year tenure with “The Tonight Show”, he continued to perform standup shows nearly every weekend.

According to some reports, Leno banked his entire salary from “Tonight”, living solely on his income from doing standup.

This workload earned him the unofficial nickname of “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business,” and set him apart from other late night competitors, who rarely, if ever, appeared anywhere but the small screen. This devotion to his

craft has allowed him to stay in top form, performance-wise, and more than a year after his departure from “Tonight,” keeps him in demand all around the country.

Leno’s love of automobiles is well-known; he currently appears on “Jay Leno’s Garage,” which was originally a web series, but can now be seen on CNBC. The series follows Leno around the country as he visits car shows, high end dealerships and test tracks, and generally just indulges his love of all things automotive. This passion has led to Leno being the only person in the world to hold the distinction of driving the pace car of all major NASCAR events.

His automobile collection is legendary and includes some historic and notable cars, including a 2001 Chrysler “Tank Car,” which boasts an engine from an M47 Patton Tank (and yet, somehow is streetlegal); a 1986 Lamborghini Countach that Leno actually used to drive to work every day; a 1963 Chrysler Turbine Car that reportedly can run on anything from jet fuel to salad dressing; and a 1925 Doble Steam Car that was once owned by billionaire Howard Hughes. While Leno is perfectly capable of maintaining the fleet of vehicles himself, his touring schedule regrettably doesn’t allow him to do so. In his place, he employs 4 full time mechanics, who ensure that every one of the cars and motorcycles is in driving condition at all times.

Watching Leno perform is like watching a master craftsman at work. Like a good mechanic who can just listen to an engine and know exactly what to do to get it running perfectly, Leno instinctively knows how to deliver a joke; pausing a half-beat longer to emphasize the punchline; hitting one word a little harder to milk a laugh. Leno may not have revolutionized standup, but he’s certainly perfected it. Even his critics admit that he’s one of the all-time masters of the art form.

He earned an Emmy for “The Tonight Show” in 1995, and another one for “Jay Leno’s Garage” in 2011. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2014; received a “People’s Choice Award” for “Favorite Talk Show Host” in 2006; received a star on the famous “Hollywood Walk of Fame”; and in 2014, became the recipient of the prestigious “Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.” He also received the “Hasty Pudding Man of the Year” award from Harvard University, becoming only the second talk show host

At a time when many standup comedians have moved into more “alternative” territory with their comedy,

one of the most humanitarian. For years, before anyone outside of Washington D.C had ever heard the word “Taliban,” Leno’s wife Mavis had been an outspoken opponent of the group’s hostility to women. Since 1997, Mavis Leno has been the Chair of the Feminist Majority Foundation’s Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan, combatting the group’s notorious abuse of women and girls. In 1999, Mavis and Jay Leno donated $100,000 to the organization, and in 2002, the organization was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, due in no small measure to Mavis Leno’s work. Jay’s humanitarian efforts have also included numerous performances for US troops around the world; benefit performances for victims of events such as the 9/11 tragedy, the horrendous 2004 tsunami in Thailand, Gulf hurricane victims, and he also leads the annual “Love Ride” in California, which benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

In addition to all his work, both

onstage and off, Leno has even found time to become a best-selling author.

He has penned two children’s books, “If Roast Beef Could Fly” and “How to Be the Funniest Kid In Your Class,” an autobiography, appropriately titled “Leading With My Chin,” and several compilations of his popular “Headlines” segment from “The Tonight Show.”

He has also done voiceover work in the animated films “Cars” and “Igor,” and

contributed not only his voice, but his famous jawline to the superhero character “The Crimson Chin” on Nickelodeon’s cartoon, “The Fairly Oddparents.”

Guests planning on attending Leno’s show at Harrah’s Cherokee on May 30 might want to leave the house a little early; not because of traffic, but because of the myriad things to see and do at the casino.

Early blues lyrics were closely aligned with religion and the troubles experienced within the African American society. The history of the Blues is long and deep and there have been many significant contributors make who made it what it is today.

C o n v e n i e nt l y located on Highway 61 as you enter Tunica, the museum takes visitors through a tour of authentic instruments used by some of the earliest blues musicians including a WC Handy’s cornet and a guitar used by Robert Johnson.

It is estimated that the new Highway 61 Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center Museum will have visits in excess of 40,000 per year. By educating these visitors on all Mississippi has to offer, hotel stays, casino visits, and collateral visits to museums throughout the Delta region will be significantly enhanced.

e’ve all dreamt about it. Sitting down at a blackjack table betting hundreds or thousands of dollars on a hand like it’s a drop in the bucket. And then you wake up and realize $10 hands are all you can afford. Sure, the casino may give you a free buffet here and there for your play, but nothing compared to what they give to a high roller.

If you are fortunate enough to bet big on a regular basis, the casino will take care of you. How so? By giving you just about anything you want. Forget the free stuff casinos give away to high rollers for a minute. The lifestyle of a high roller isn’t always as glamorous as TV and movies make it seem. When you are risking thousands – or even millions – of dollars the stress can become unbearable. Every casino game, whether you have an edge or not, has big swings.

One day you’re winning $500,000, the next day you’re losing $1 million.

Most big gamblers spend countless hours scouting out casinos and games where they receive the best odds. This is especially true for professional poker players. Since poker is a game in which players bet against other players instead of the house, there is a skill factor unlike slot machines or some other casino games. Since skill is a factor, the top poker players are often forced to travel all over the world to find the right games and tournaments. Although most enjoy traveling, it can become tiresome and anything but routine.

However, There is More Glitz and Glamour than Negatives

Most high rollers will tell you they can deal with the stress and the constant traveling because the excitement is well

worth it. Instead of counting beans at a 9-5 job, high rollers spend their days placing wagers large enough to dwarf a normal persons annual salary.

Some high rollers are able to convince the casino to bring a private craps table up to their room. Phil Ivey, arguably the world’s best poker player, doesn’t always gamble on the main casino floor. Instead, a couple of dealers and a supervisor will come up to his gambling suite and let him roll dice on his own private craps table. He bets upwards of $250,000 on any given roll so imagine the fluctuations he has in a gambling session.

Do High Rollers Actually Win?

Casinos do everything they can to get high rollers in the door. Would they be offering so many lavish rewards if the high rollers cleaned out the casino?

Nope. Some high rollers win, just like some regular gamblers win. The games are the same, for the most part, whether you’re betting $5 or $500,000. However, there is certainly a higher percentage of skilled gamblers at the high roller level as opposed regular gamblers.

High rollers tend to seek out any edge they can find in order to get the best odds.

Sports betting, poker, and blackjack are the only games where a player can turn the odds in their favor. If played correctly, these become games of skill. So there are high rollers that win, but only those that become skilled at playing those games.

However, if you get caught counting cards while playing blackjack, the casino will throw you out. Counting cards is the only way to flip blackjack odds in your favor.

High rollers that play slots, roulette, craps and other popular casino games will lose in the long run. It’s virtually impossible to beat the house on these games. There will be some winning sessions, but far more losing sessions. The massive casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City weren’t built on winners. They were built on high rollers losing millions of dollars.

Where Do the Highest Rollers Play?

Nearly every casino has a High Limit room for their high rollers. But only a small portion of the casinos in the world actually takes bets from the highest rollers. Atlantic City used to be home to a lot of action from the highest rollers, but now most of the biggest bets take place elsewhere. Some of the common comps high rollers receive include – beyond what we already mentioned – show tickets, tickets to boxing matches, expensive gifts (jewelry, etc.), VIP seating at the casino’s night club, limo service, a personal Butler when staying in the hotel’s lavish suites and villas, private entrances to the casino and more. High rollers often make additional special requests, and the casinos usually oblige.

Who Do Wealthy People Gamble if They Already Have Millions of Dollars?

Three Card Poker:

If any modern table game could be said to be an adopted son of the South, it’s Three Card Poker. Success in Mississippi eventually convinced casinos throughout the United States to give the game a try and today, it is a casino standard that every operator must have. It is fun, easy to learn and gives players a decent chance to win.

winnings of $5 on the ante, $5 on the bet and $25 on the straight flush. On other wins that don’t include one of the big three hands, you’d collect $5 on the ante and another $5 on the bet.

THE ANTE-BET STRATEGY

Optimal strategy for Three Card Poker is about as easy as it gets.

Make the extra bet to stay in the game if your hand is Queen-6-4 or better. Fold if you have a lesser hand.

That means you also bet on all pairs, flushes, straights, three of a kinds and straight flushes – those all outrank high-card hands.

Note that in Three Card Poker, straights outrank flushes. That’s because you see flushes more often than straights in three-card games. In five-card games, you get straights about twice as often as flushes, but in three-card games there are 1.5 times as many possible flushes as straights.

HOW TO PLAY

Start by making an ante for player vs. the dealer and/or a bet on Pair Plus. At most casinos, you do not have to make both wagers.

The ante and the Pair Plus wager can be of different sizes. They are separate bets, and are decided independently, so they don’t have to match.

If you don’t have any of those higher-ranking hands, then hands are ranked by highest card first, then second highest. If you have Jack-10-7, the proper strategy is to fold. It is not Queen-6-4 or better since the highest card is lower than the Queen.

If your hand is King-3-2, then you should make the bet. The King outranks the Queen, making this a better hand than Queen-6-4 even though the second and third cards are lower than the 6 and 4.

After all players have made their wagers, each player gets three cards face down, and the dealer also gets three cards face down.

Play continues after players have a chance to pick up their cards and look at them.

With that strategy, the house edge on the ante-pay combo is 3.4 percent of the ante, or 2.0 percent when both the ante and bet are considered.

ANTE-BET PLAY VS. THE DEALER

If you think ante-bet is easy, then Pair Plus is a real snap. You don’t have to beat the dealer, and there is no strategy to learn.

All you need is to match a hand on the pay table – a concept video poker players can identify with. You win on any hand that contains a pair or better, and lose if you don’t have at least a pair.

After you’ve seen your cards, you may either make a bet equal to your ante, or you may fold and forfeit the hand. If you’ve anted $5, then your bet must also be $5 for you to stay in the game.

The dealer then turns his cards face up. If the dealer hand is at least a Queen or better, it is a qualifying hand. For you to win, your hand must outrank the dealer’s. If you win, both your ante and your bet are paid at even money, and if you lose, the dealer takes both your ante and bet.

If the dealer hand does not qualify and you’ve made the bet to stay in the game, then you win even money on the ante, but the bet is returned to you with no additional payoff.

In addition, there is a bonus for strong hands regardless of whether you beat the dealer or not. Most casinos pay a 5-1 bonus if you have a straight flush, 4-1 if you have three of a kind and even money if you have a straight.

For example, let’s say you ante $5, see you have a straight flush and follow with a $5 bet. Assuming you win the hand, you then collect 26 |

There are several pay tables available, but the most common pays 40-1 for a straight flush, 30-1 for three of a kind, 6-1 for straights, 3-1 for flushes and even money for pairs. At that pay table, the house edge is 7.3 percent.

The payoffs aren’t as huge as you see on five-card games, but they are attainable. Anyone who plays very often will see the occasional straight flush or three of a kind. You’ll see the top hand, a straight flush, about once per 460 hands. Compare that to a five-card royal on a game such as Caribbean Stud. That occurs an average of once per 649,740-1. Caribbean Stud pays a lifestyle-changing progressive, but you may never see one in your lifetime. Three Card Poker pays a more modest sum, but $200 for a $5 bet is a nice win, and you’ll see straight flushes a lot more often with three cards. Good luck!

hile I can certainly take or leave blackjack, I know several high stakes gamblers who exclusively participate in planet Earth’s most popular casino table game. Indeed it’s a gross understatement to say that strategies among these speculators vary, however one particular axiom is universally revered. To a man, my colleagues will never under any circumstance, buy “insurance” when the dealer is showing and ace.

Though essentially shunned when coupled with green felt, transactions which fall under the heading “insurance” are habitually purchased inside modern thoroughbred horse racing superstructures. Somewhat of an abstract term since it flaunts various dimensions, the phrase “pari-mutuel insurance” loosely defined equates to a “back-up” bet or more specifically, a bet which may allow you to break even or perhaps win a few bucks should your primary wager lose.

Old as horseracing itself is the rudimentary practice of insuring a large “win” bet with a “place” bet (staking a runner to finish 1st or 2nd) of equal value. For example, you’ll often overhear a veteran horse player verbalize something like, “In the 3rd race at Aqueduct, I’m backing the 3/2 favorite; $50 to win, $50 to place.” In this model, Mr. John Doe is hedging a substantial investment against calamitous racing luck or some 38-1 shot who inexplicitly runs the race of their career.

Obviously, there is one glaring problem with the aforementioned methodology. For one thing, should the referenced 3/2 shot finish up the track, Mr. John Doe jumps from the frying pan into the fire. Another less serious crisis in this particular scenario involves the potential “R.O.I” or return on investment. See, 90% of the time, a “place” bet on a 3/2 shot will fail to yield “even money.”

Actually on average, you’re probably looking at around $3.00. Consequently, should the public’s top choice only salvage 2nd, Mr. John Doe’s bankroll still diminishes by a healthy 25%.

Rather than insure their short “win” bet with a proportionate “place” bet, many low-rollers guard

against bankruptcy by buying cheaper, albeit riskier, “exacta keys.” Let’s assume Aqueduct’s 3rd race flaunts 10 runners and that the 3/2 favorite wears saddle cloth #1. Next, let’s assume the #7 horse (listed at 3-1 odds) and the #8 horse (listed at 5-1 odds), are the contest’s two biggest potential spoilers. Mr. John Doe could partially “insure” his win $50 win bet with a $5 exacta key (7,8/1) for a cost of only $10.

Taking things one step further, we explore how exactas themselves may too be insured. Now when a race features and odds-on favorite (an entry whose price is less than even money) players habitually buy exotic wagers in an attempt inflate their profits however one must remember that when it comes to horse racing; nothing, and I mean nothing is a sure thing. Accordingly, if you acquisition a $20 exacta i.e. the #3 horse (2/5 odds)/#6 horse (3-1 odds), “insure” yourself against insolvency with say a $3 exacta #6/#3.

Likewise, a $5 exacta key (total cost $15) #3 horse (2/5 odds)/#1 horse (5/2 odds), #2 horse (3-1 odds), #4 horse (4-1 odds) can be reasonably insured with a $1 exacta key (total cost $3) 1,2,4/3.

In conclusion, I’d like to acquaint all readers with a design I’ve dubbed “comprehensive session insurance.” This practice involves blindly wagering the same inexpensive trifecta for the duration of a specific program. As an illustration, suppose I’m attacking an eleven race card at Tampa Bay Downs. Before the first race I would simply purchase then pocket a 50¢ trifecta box 1/ 2-8 (my lucky numbers) for all eleven races at a cost of only $11. Unscientific as it sounds, I’ve seen this economical secondary strategy restore dozens of decimated bankrolls.

Ultimately, horseplayers must formulate their own opinion concerning pari-mutuel insurance.

Yes it augments expenditures on the front end yet over the long haul; regularly backing up primary wagers can preserve hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Therefore start investing those extra pennies because honestly; every successful horseplayer I know consistently diversifies.

CRAPS: Three Little Mistakes that Cost Big FROM STEVEN: I have three things to say about the game of craps and how to wager because I think so-called ‘authorities’ on gambling have it all wrong. I am being logical here and I think my logic is correct.

One: I think the people who advocate that you use the Come betting with odds are making a big mistake. You have to hit the number twice to get paid when you Come bet where if you Place the number you only have to hit it once and you are ahead on that number. So why do gambling authors such as you keep saying Come betting is superior? I just don’t get it.

Two: You can take Place bets down but you can’t do that with Come bets. This gives the player a lot of freedom of choice.

Three: With Place bets you can get up on the hot numbers right away, you don’t have to wait or wind up having a Come bet going to a number that hasn’t been hitting until that one time.

FRANK RESPONDS: At first what you are saying sounds logical but it is a mistaken notion that many players sadly fall into. An important fact is that the very first placement of the Come bet can see you win eight times (the seven and 11) and lose four times (the 2, 3 and 12). That gives you a two-to-one edge over the house the moment the bet is made. However when you Place a number the house has an immediate edge over you. So the very first placement heavily favors the Come bettor but the house is heavily favored on the first bet for a Place bettor – and keeps this house-favorable edge throughout the rolls.

Now once the Come bet is up, the odds do shift to the house. But the Come bet’s overall house edge is a smallish 1.41 percent which means you will lose on average $1.41 per $100 wagered over time. The house edges on the Place bets go from okay (1.52 percent on the six or eight), to poor (4 percent on the five or nine) to awful (6.67 percent on the four or 10). Speaking monetarily, your expected loss is $1.52 for $100 on the six and eight; $4 for $100 on the five or nine, and $6.67

per $100 on the four or 10.

The numbers don’t lie. But the numbers are misleading. Watch this. When you place the six or eight, you must do so in multiples of six dollars. Let us say you Place the six for $12, your expected loss is then 18 cents. You do not have to use $12 for a Come bet; you can bet $10 and therefore your expected loss will be 14 cents. I see that as a big difference.

The next big difference has to do with the ability to take odds. If you like to Place the six or eight for $30 at a 5X odds game, you are far, far better off just going with a $5 Come bet with $25 in odds. Your expected loss with the Come bet is a mere 7 cents; your expected loss on the Place bet is 46 cents. Now that is some big, big difference.

Keep in mind when we are talking about the six or eight Place bets we are talking about the good Place bets. The other Place bets – for lack of a better word – stink. You do not want to try to overcome 4 percent edges on the five or nine or 6.67 percent edges on the four or 10.

Yes, you do have the ability to take down your Place bets and on occasion some craps players will do so. Most craps players don’t do so. They prefer to keep their bets up until a decision pro or con is reached. To make Place betting equal to Come betting you would have to take down your bets about 80 percent of the time – and I have never seen any craps player do that in a quarter century.

Your final point is believed in by most players.

Here is a radical statement. In a random game there are no hot numbers. There were hot numbers but the past is no indication of what will happen in the future. So throwing out Place bets here and there trying to catch a hot number is essentially wasting your bankroll.

My advice is therefore to go with a Come bet, put as much as you can afford in odds and leave it at that. In a random game you can’t outthink the dice, you can’t predict the dice; you can only make the mathematically best bet and leave it at that.

BLACKJACK: What Would You Do If …?

everal years ago, I appeared on a gambling show on T.V. in which several scenarios were created and players were asked this question, “What would you do if …?” After the players gave their response to each scenario, several gambling experts (including me) were asked what they would do. I thought it would be fun to create a few blackjack-related scenarios for you to ponder, and then decide, what would you do …?

(Note: Answers are at the end of the article.)

1. You are playing blackjack in a casino when a new dealer takes over the dealing chores. While she shuffles the cards, you start making small talk with her and find out that she recently graduated from dealing school. It’s a doubledeck game, and she begins to pitch the cards to the players. However, you notice something unusual. Occasionally, the dealer is unknowingly exposing her hole card. She obviously needs to practice her dealing technique but now you are faced with this dilemma. Should you take advantage of her sloppy dealing by playing your hand based on knowing what the dealer’s hole card is (which gives you a tremendous advantage)?

But what if you were caught taking advantage of this flashing dealer? Would you be accused of cheating? Would you: 1. Stop playing because it’s illegal to take advantage of a flashing dealer.

2. Keep playing because there is nothing illegal about taking advantage of a flashing dealer.

2. You’ve made it to the final round of a milliondollar blackjack tournament and there are only two players left, you and a known tournament pro. It’s the last hand in the tournament and you have a commanding lead over the pro with a $49,000 bankroll to his $20,000. There are no maximum betting limits in this tournament and the minimum bet is only $5. Surrender isn’t offered. First place prize is a million bucks; second place wins $50,000. You are on the button (meaning, you must bet first, before he does), and you have 30 seconds to decide how much you are

going to bet. What would you do? Would you: 1. Go all in with a $49,000 bet.

2. Make a minimum $5 bet.

3. Bet at least $1,005 but no more than $8,995.

Answers 1. I was asked this very question about ‘flashing dealers” on the gambling show. My response was something along these lines. “It’s not the player’s responsibility to ensure that the dealer is following the casino’s dealing protocols. That’s the responsibility of the floor supervisor and surveillance personnel. If the dealer is sloppy and exposes her hole card, and that information is available to all the players on the table, there is nothing ‘illegal’ about using that information to play your hand.”

2. Because there is such a large spread between the million-dollar first-place prize and the $50,000 second-place prize, it’s clear that you should do whatever it takes to wind up with more chips than the pro after the last hand is played.

What you definitely want to avoid is a swing, meaning if you lose the last hand and he wins his last hand, he winds up with more chips than you do. Therefore, going all in and betting $49,000 would be a big mistake. If you assume the pro will go all in and bet $20,000, he could wind up with $40,000 if he wins his last hand. Betting the minimum $5 seems OK (even if you lost your hand, you’d wind up with $48,995, which would beat the pro’s $40,000). However, making the minimum $5 bet is another big mistake. That’s because you haven’t covered the possibility that the pro could get lucky and get a blackjack on the last hand (a one in roughly 21 possibility). If that happens, he’d get paid $30,000 for his $20,000 bet and wind up with $50,000, which would be greater than your $49,005 (assuming you won your $5 bet). The optimum bet to make is at least $1005 but no more than $8995. The reason is you will hold back more unbet chips than the pro can attain even if he goes all in and wins. However, you’ll also be successful if he gets lucky and hits a blackjack. (According to the math, you’ll have more than a 97% chance of winning the million if you bet at least $1005.)

Flops and Weak Flops

W

hile you’re playing the premium hands (top ten) and strong hands (11-18), you’ll hit great flops and terrible flops and somewhere-inbetween flops. First, let’s take a look at a bunch of examples of what to do with great flops.

or an ace, deuce, three, or six comes up to make you a straight. My vote is that you slow-play this had on the flop and try to keep as many players in the pot as possible. Someone with a worse flush draw will call one bet as well, which is great for you if the flush does come.

Great Flops When you have the luxury of a great flop, your only decision is whether or not you should ram and jam the flop (put in as many raises as you can) or slow-play the flop (let other players into the pot by acting weak and therefore capturing additional money from many different players).

Suppose that you have A-3-K-K and the flop is K-4-4. You have flopped kings full of fours.

Normally, when you flop the top full house you would generally want to play it fast (bet and raise every possible time) to prevent someone from hitting the “back-door” low, catching two perfect cards on fourth street and the river, such as 6-7.

When this happens you end up giving up half of the pot unnecessarily. In the case of A-3-K-K, however, you have a strong low hand as well as the top full house. If you slow-play it, someone who stays in may hit a card that keeps him in the pot, not knowing that he has no hope of winning the low side (he is drawing dead). On the other hand, if an opponent has exactly one four in his hand, then your playing the hand fast may prove to be best, because with trips he might be willing to put in several bets on the flop but only a few on the turn. In that case you would be costing yourself money by slow-playing. But given that you really cost yourself money only when your opponent has exactly a four, slow-playing the hand has to be considered the preferred choice, so as to squeeze more money out of a great situation.

Suppose you have and A♦-2♠-3♦-8♣ and the flop is 4♦-5♦-8♠. In this situation you have flopped the pest possible low, and it is uncounterfeitable, meaning that it cannot lose the low pot no matter which other low cards come up on the next two board cards. Even if the last two cards pair the ace, deuce, or three, you will still make the best possible low by using you backup cards. You have also flopped a powerful wrap straight draw (4-5 from the board wrapped with an A, 2, 3, or 6 on one of the next two cards will make you a straight), the ace-high flush draw, and a pair of eights! Wow, what a flop for your hand! Now what do you do? Do you start betting, raising, and re-raising right now, or do you just call to lure in your opponents?

The argument for raising now is that you want to drive out high hands like two pair or trips so that your pair of eights might win the high side of the pot while your A-2 wins the low half. The much stronger argument here is for just calling with this hand on the flop. After all, you have the low half of the pot “locked up” unless someone else also has A-2, in which case you would get one-quarter of the whole pot (one-half of the low half; sometimes the low can even be split into three, in which case your take would amount to one-sixth of the pot). And you have a great chance to win the high side if a diamond (flush)

A day in the life of... A Jockey by

I

t was 5:37 am on a cold Saturday morning in September 2013 when I pulled off the Watterson Expressway and took the sharp right turn into the Circle K parking lot. I had 18 minutes to get a coffee and drive the 1.3 miles to Gate 5 of Churchill Downs before missing the first set of work-ers that appear like apparitions out of the inky darkness every morning.

Problem was the slow-moving pickup truck with out-of-state plates in front of me didn’t seem to share my sense of urgency.

Maybe it was camaraderie of being awake at such an ungodly hour, but like riders loading into the starting gate, this fellow driver and I both turned our heads to acknowledge each other when we finally parked under the neon sign.

That’s when I couldn’t help but laugh. Out of the truck hopped a very chipper Jesus Castanon wearing his riding boots and an unzipped red protective flak vest with his usual ear-to-ear grin.

All that was missing from the ensemble was his helmet - which was sitting on the passenger seat atop a stack of conditions books from various tracks the journeyman jockey has called home in a career that has spanned over a quarter century.

Standing in the checkout line with one eye on the clock (which now read 5:42 am) and my hand holding a very large, very hot coffee, Jesus and I got to chatting. He had a few horses to work that morning before he planned to hit the gym and head back to ride a few of the afternoon’s races.

With a $2 coffee warming my frozen fingers, I jumped in my car, luckily caught all the lights on Southern Parkway, waved a quick Hi! at the security guard, and was settling into my seat trying not to spill coffee on my clocker’s notebook as the first set of D. Wayne Lukas trainees reached the half-mile pole.

“Hey you!” I heard from somewhere below. Looking over, there’s Jesus Castanon sitting on a big chestnut. It was 5:57 am. I still have no idea how he had time to check out, drive, drink his soda, find the barn on Churchill’s vast backstretch, park, don his protective gear, get a leg up on the horse and ride over to the front side of the track when I barely had had three sips of coffee.

But jockeys are a rare breed.

These brave men and women live at under 115lbs and zip around hairpin turns at 45mph in herds of 1200lbs animals ~ and they do it all balancing on their toes. They are also tireless workers: visit any track in the mornings and you’re guaranteed to see the best riders in the country in addition to the plethora of unsung hero exercise riders on every caliber of racehorse. Santa Anita has Mike Smith and Gary Stevens; Gulfstream Park has Joe Bravo and Edgar Pra-do; Kentucky has everyone from Calvin Borel to Robby Albarado.

Why would Hall of Fame jockeys wake up before dawn almost every day to work out a handful of horses? Jesus Castanon has 36

nearly 2,300 wins in a 17,000 race career: the man has earned the right to sleep in.

But unlike most professional athletes, jockeys don’t have a front office to rely on for guaranteed assignments. There is no depth chart for the position: if a rider wants to succeed, every day is draft day.

So jockeys and their agents use the mornings to build relationships with trainers and get a feel for the stock in each shedrow. Not every horse a jockey works will turn into an afternoon mount: sometimes a trainer wants to put a young horse in more experienced hands or to test a young jockey’s timing with a temperamental charge. When the chemistry is right between horse and rider, though, it’s obvious.

Brian Hernandez, Jr., the 2004 Eclipse Champion for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey, often works horses for Ian Wilkes, but there was something different when he got aboard Fort Larned. The near-black son of E Dubai had nine different riders in his 25 starts, but six of his ten career victories came under Hernandez, Jr., including American racing’s richest prize: the $5million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Watching the pair fly through the lane during their weekly pre-dawn workouts over the course of three years was textbook: Fort Larned reaching for ever more ground as Brian sat chilly in the saddle.

Similarly, Hall of Fame rider Calvin Borel has a knack for calming nervous horses. In Rose to Gold’s final 2013 Kentucky Oaks prep, the compact chestnut filly came through the Churchill Downs stretch moving well enough, but the real magic was after the wire: Calvin stood up like he does with every horse, but this time he ran his hand along her neck and stroked her mane for a few strides. The horse took a breath and relaxed noticeably: she started to move in a more fluid manner and even seemed to puff up a little with added confidence. Morning workouts are over around 10 am, so jockeys take a few hours to go to the gym, visit with trainers, or grab a nap before checking in with the Clerk of Scales. They may not have teams, but one similarity to other professional athletes who have equipment managers is that riders will have a valet who makes sure they have the right silks, saddle, enough goggles, and a whip throughout the raceday. Most riders won’t have a mount in every race, so they occupy their downtime by studying past performances, playing ping pong, or signing autographs for fans.

Once the races are over, there is the opportunity to dine with owners and trainers and continue building solid relationships both on and off the track.

To succeed as a top jockey requires more than good hands or the courage to thread a horse through a barely-there hole between rivals: it takes a near-24/7 commitment to the craft.
