offers to casinos throughout the South with every issue of the magazine. The membership ($29 per year) is the only one of its kind in the country. Members receive thousands in freebies, plus the magazine! Since day one, The Comps Club has been a success and we look forward to seeing it continue to grow as we keep rewarding our members with great offers.

In 1999, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 11,000 for the first time ever, professional wrestler Jesse Ventura was sworn in as the governor of Minnesota and Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, was Time magazine’s Person of the Year. 1999 was also the year Southern Gaming and Destinations began its journey to becoming THE gaming authority of the South. And what a journey it has been. I am fortunate enough to have been a part of that journey since the third issue in 1999 and have seen first-hand the evolution of this thriving industry. Today, we are one of the leading magazines in the industry, publishing six issues annually with subscribers in just about every state in the country—most of who live and gamble in the Southern states. In addition, our website (SouthernGaming.com) is a leading source for information on industry news and hot happenings, and serves as an extension of what our readers get with the printed magazine. Over the years, we have also noticed that gamblers like their stuff—especially free stuff! Whether it’s a giveaway at a casino or a complimentary buffet, they can’t get enough. So in 2007, we started a premium membership called The Comps Club TM where members received coupons and special

We have seen the peaks and valleys of the gaming industry over the years and it is currently reinventing itself once again. With states working to pass legislation to expand gambling and online legislation being a hot topic among lobbyists, the future is brighter than ever. But it won’t come easy for individual properties. They will need to continue to figure out what is most important to YOU, the gamblers and their customers. They need to continue to strive to have the best customer service, the best amenities, the best entertainment, the best dining, the best promotional offers, the best games ... the best everything! We understand everyone can’t be THE best, but everyone can try their best. This industry does a great job at excelling in just about every category, and that’s what makes it so fun to be a part of. We hope you will take part in our annual Best of Southern Gaming Awards on page 62. It provides the industry and your fellow readers with a guide as to who is excelling in what areas and who needs to kick it up a notch. Plus, you might win a VIP trip to your favorite casino, too! Thank you for your support over the last fifteen years; it sure has been fun and as we look forward to the next fifteen, we hope you will be along for the ride! If you can’t be good ... be lucky!

ANNIV ERSARY ISSUE

COVER GALLERY In 1999, the first issue of Southern Gaming and Destinations was published. Gambling was on the rise as casinos in Las Vegas reported record numbers and new gambling legislation was sweeping the country. The golden goose had been spotted and gaming moguls like Sam Boyd and Jack Binion swooped in to stake their claim in Louisiana, Mississippi and Indiana, investing millions of dollars in the ultimate gamble which would eventually pay off handsomely.

During this gaming boom, businessman and marketing mastermind, Larry Bisig, saw an opportunity and jumped on it. He compiled a team to launch a quarterly magazine that would serve as a guide for casino players and horseracing enthusiasts, boasting great gambling tips, property reviews and exciting attractions in the Southeastern United States. There wasn’t much competition at the time from other gambling magazines and powered by his leading advertising and marketing firm, Bisig Communications (now Bisig Impact Group), in Louisville, Kentucky, we went “all‑in” and started our journey. And what a journey it has been. We hope you enjoy this snapshot of our past as we showcase our front cover collage spanning from 1999 to today. How many do you remember? How many do you still have? We look forward to providing you with another 15 years worth! Enjoy!

TOP 5 INTERVIEWS SOUTHERN GAMING AND DESTINATIONS

GUY FIERI: ROCK STAR CHEF An accomplished cook, restaurant owner, Food Network star and author, Guy Fieri truly stands out in the culinary world by combining his cool rock ‘n’ roll attitude and everyday cooking. With his bleached blond hair, earrings and goatee, Fieri (pronounced Fee-eree) has injected his personality into his wildly successful shows on Food Network, including “Guy’s Big Bite,” “Guy Off the Hook,” “Ultimate Recipe Showdown” and “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives,” revolutionizing the cooking and entertainment industry forever. SOUTHERN GAMING: Since you premiered on the Food Network in 2006, it seems like everything you’ve touched has turned to gold. What has the ride been like for you, and to what do you attribute that success? GUY FIERI: Attributing is probably the biggest factor. I use the analogy to being a pro quarterback. I think to be a great athlete you have to be good. But if you don’t have a great front line or don’t have a good team surrounding you, then you’re going to taste the dirt a lot more often. I’ve got to be honest with you, I am a very blessed man. I’ve been blessed to be around great people and great producers. The Food Network has treated me incredibly well. I staffed my team with all kind of pros, a great manager, great attorney and great agent who can likely change a tire while the car is still rolling. I think the overall success is a culmination of things. I was 18

| SOUTHERNGAMING.COM

a chef and owned my restaurants long before I was with Food Network, so I was in the zone of doing business and handling opportunities inside and out. So I think that was really one of the biggest parts. I do what I’ve always been doing, but now it just so happens to be that I am on a mega ride.

cooking show, there are no boundaries. My parents started me on sushi at 9 years old, back before there were sushi bars on every corner. I had a pretty diversified taste. I love it all. SG: What makes the perfect cheeseburger? GF: Well, you start by going to your butcher and asking him to grind out the meat right then and there so it is as fresh as can be. Then, get a really good sharp cheddar cheese or high-grade Swiss. A good cheeseburger depends on quality. I’m not an over-do-it-on-flavor kind of guy. If you’re looking to make a great cheeseburger, it starts with great meat and the sauce you cook it with. I like to cook over wood or good charcoal bouquets with salt and pepper and let the natural fat and juices come together. Melt the cheese appropriately, serve it medium rare with a nice bun that’s not too heavy, with crisp lettuce, a slice of heirloom tomato and even some good, thick hickorysmoked bacon.

It’s far greater, bigger and more outrageous than I ever thought it would be. At first I was just happy to be on the Food Network. I thought, “That’s co ol , I c a n me et Emeril, Paula, Bobby and Rachael!” Then I would go back and do my restaurant thing. When I went on my trip to New York, it was like I got onto a little single-engine plane, and it turned into the space shuttle. SG : W hen you are away from the television and from your own restaurants, what meals do you like to cook? G F : I ’m b i g o n Italian, so I always tend to revert to pastas and olive oils, but my style of cooking is so eclectic. W hen asked to describe my

GARY STEVENS: HALL OF FAME JOCKEY STEPS DOWN FROM RACING With a list of victories, awards and achievements that may never be rivaled, Southern Gaming caught up with Gary Stevens, one of horse racing’s greatest living legends, as he looked over a Daily Racing Form on a sunny afternoon in California. SOUTHERN GAMING: Looking back over your 27 years, what are a few of your career highlights? GARY STEVENS: Well, obviously my three Kentucky Derby wins and the Dubai World Cup in 1998 when I went back and won aboard Silver Charm, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1997. I thought that was a huge performance by Silver Charm that day, defeating Swain. We were representing the United States on the first horse that had ever won the Kentucky Derby to go over and do battle against the world. That was a very gratifying moment. SG: You had an impressive eight Triple Crown victories. Does any one stand out over the others? GS: There are actually two Belmont Stakes that stick out in my mind. One of them was a great memory and the other one I cannot seem to get rid of. One was when I was beaten for the Triple Crown being aboard Silver Charm by three quarters of a length. That was probably one of the most disappointing moments in my career. The other was the following year, aboard Victory Gallop, I defeated Real Quiet by a short nose in the final stride against one of my best friends, Mike Pegram, who owned Real Quiet. It was bittersweet for me. In my mind it was probably the best race I had ever ridden in my career. SG: What were some of your motivations for stepping down from riding? GS: I wanted to go out in a fashion where two or three years from now people wouldn’t be saying, “Stevens should have retired.” My knees were definitely a factor. A lot of days I would be riding in a lot of pain. I feel I lost a lot of my consistency in my performance because of the pain I was in. I had good days and bad days.

Gary Stevens, May 2006

Unfortunately, I didn’t know when those good days were going to be until I was legged up on a horse in the paddock. I had become very critical of myself. I was my own worst enemy and I really did not feel like I was performing at the level the fans or myself had been used to over the years. I was still able to walk out with some dignity. I had the opportunity to go out and work for TVG and NBC, which afforded me to stay in the business that I love. SG: In the last 27 years, how has the industry changed and what are some of the things you feel the industry needs to ensure growth among the American public and the horsemen? GS: I would like to see fewer racing days. I don’t think the majority of the horses can withstand the campaigns that they are being put in. A lot of these horses are not getting the proper rest between races.

Like athletes, when a horse gives you its all, they need time to recuperate. There are more trainers and owners that are not recognizing this because they focus too much on the prize money. I think there is a lot of greed out there and any time there is money involved on a regular basis, there are going to be some poor decisions made. With more rest I believe the number of horses in our fields would increase. With that increase, the gamblers out there have better value and opportunities for every dollar they are betting. Without the race fans and gamblers we do not have a business. I think they need to be catered to more than they are when the serious players come to the races. I think it should be like Vegas, including free admission. I don’t think we need to be charging people to get into the racetrack or parking. I think the serious players that are there every day should be given free racing forms, programs and comps for their loyalty.

business opportunities, and I began to realize that by the end of the year, I had earned three-quarters of a million dollars in poker, and then by the end of 2007, I earned almost a million dollars. I soon realized that the poker opportunities were bigger than my opportunities in law, so I made a calculated decision that seemed to be the logical choice. SG : Do you prefer playing online or live games? VR: Online you get so much more experience in a shorter period of time. The average online hand plays seven times faster than a live hand, so a year of playing online is like seven years of experience. So for a young player like me, who plays against all the top players in the world who’ve been playing forever, playing online is really important to practicing, developing and honing skills quickly. On the other hand, in the live environment, you can’t divorce the human element from the game, and that really adds another dimension you just can’t replicate online. It is really good to diversify yourself and play both. SG: Do women players hold any type of advantage when playing?

VANESSA ROUSSO: POKER’S PRINCESS SHINES IN THE SOUTH Vanessa Rousso has cashed in for over $3 million in both online and live-game poker tournaments. Rousso has reaped the benef its of her stardom through endorsements from companies such as GoDaddy.com and PokerStars.net, and the end is nowhere in sight. We recently caught up with the poker star and got her take on everything from playing poker to her world travels. SOU THER N GA MING : With a degree from Duke University and working on a law degree from University of Miami, what inspired you to make the move to become a professional poker player? VANESSA ROUSSO: Growing up, I 20

was very academic. I never planned on growing up to become a professional poker player, it kind of happened by accident. I started playing online when I was 18, and when I was at Duke I was exposed to courses that taught using game theoretical analysis to study poker by using different applications. I made my first big jump in April 2006 at the $25,000 buy-in World Poker Tour Championship event in Vegas. I actually sold shares of myself because buying in to a $25,000 tournament at that point in my career didn’t make much sense. I studied the structure in depth and had a whole plan and was convinced I was going to do well. I made a proposal to friends and family members who all bought small shares of me. I went on to play and finished seventh out of 601 players and cashed for over a quarter of a million dollars. It led to some sponsorship offers and other

VR: I think women are underestimated, and I will admit that I underestimate other women poker players as well. I think it’s because you’re not used to seeing women at the table and you don’t expect them to be one of your toughest opponents. They can really fly under the radar and get away with some moves that you wouldn’t expect them to pull off. For a long time, that was a big advantage for me, nowadays not so much because as you become more well known, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re a woman or a man, they know you’re a big poker player, and they’re not going to let you get away with much. SG: When you do have free time, what do you like to do? VR: Well, people ask me that a lot. I guess my biggest hobby is learning new things. Last summer I learned to play drums, and this year I learned to speak Italian. I’ve gotten into different things such as martial arts and flying planes, too. I love to learn and expand my abilities to add different dimensions to my life.

DOYLE “TEXAS DOLLY” BRUNSON: THE GODFATHER OF POKER In the world of poker, there has been one legendary icon who has served as its ambassador and one of the most respected players in history ... that icon is Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson. Brunson, now 75, is the Babe Ruth of poker and virtually invented Te x a s Hold ’em. Br unson recent ly came out with his autobiography, “The Godfather of Poker: The Doyle Brunson Story,” which gives readers a look into the life of a gambler and highlights real-life stories that show the dangers of the life of an old-time gambler. We recently caught up w ith Br unson to discuss the new book, a bit of his past and what lies ahead. SG: When you were playing cards in west Texas, it was a pretty rough environment. T he g a me s were raided by police and robbers, and you mentioned that you saw players shot at the same table you were at or nearby. What do you think about the advancements in poker, and is there anything you miss about the old days?

| SOUTHERNGAMING.COM

SG: Do you feel Internet players have an advantage over live tournament and cash game players? DB: Online players just punch numbers

don’t fair too well in a live environment. SG: Why do you think that is? DB: Poker is about the people more than it is the cards. You have to be able to decide what to do at different times. On the Internet, you don’t know your opponent, and you never see him, so you have to determine his betting patterns and go off of that. SG : W hat a re some of the more interesting wagers or prop bets you have seen over the years? DB : T he ones I remember most are the weight bets back when we were heavy. We did that quite often, but usually they didn’t come to a conclusion because we wou ld s et t le them before they were completed. One time I lost 100 pounds on a bet and I got paid on a big bet on that one. SG: You won two o f y o u r Wo r l d Ser ies Poker Championships with 10-2, and the hand is now known as the “Doyle Brunson.” Does this show that when it gets down to headsup play, you can win with any two cards?

Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson, January 2010

DB : I persona l ly liked the old days better because there were more cash games. People put their money on the table to gamble. I just don’t care for the tournaments because you get so many non-players that win tournaments who wouldn’t survive in a real poker atmosphere. I think the public gets the wrong idea about some of these guys who 22

win tournaments. Most of them can’t make a living playing poker.

DB: The first time I won it, I made a bad read on a guy and he happened to have a better hand, but I drew out on him. The second time, it just happened. I had two pair on the turn, and he had two under pair. It was an accidental thing, but I happened to have the same hand again, and I made a full house again. But it is a bad hand and a sentimental hand that I tried playing for a while, but I learned pretty quickly not to.

LARRY KING: LIFE BEYOND THE MICROPHONE Few people can say they have mastered their industry or trade. Even fewer can say they have mastered it for fifty years. One of the few who has accomplished this scarce feat is Larry King. The man who made a living interviewing the biggest names in show business, politics, social circles and just about every super star you could imagine. When he signed off on his final ‘Larry King Live Show’ on CNN last December, he left us with the words “Instead of goodbye, how about so long.” Well King is back and he is coming to a casino near you! Southern Gaming c au ght up w it h h i m de spite h is remarkably busy schedule to get a look at life beyond television. SOU T H E R N G A M I NG : S i n c e 1985, the show ‘Larry King Live’ has brought perspective on the lives of high profile people to millions of households worldwide. What were some of your favorite guests on the show? LARRY KING: What I liked the best was not so much the subject, but the quality of the guest. What I always wanted in a guest was someone who had passion for what they did, who could explain what they did very well, who had a sense of humor and a little bit of a chip on their shoulder. When you can combine those four things, it didn’t matter if it was a ballet dancer or a politician, it was great. Frank Sinatra had all four things. When you are lucky enough to get someone like that as a guest, it really doesn’t matter what the subject is. When I can get that magic occurring, that’s the best. I want the person more than the subject. The subjects will always fit in. SG: You are famous for getting the most out of your guests. How do you prepare for an interview? LK: I never approach the guest with an agenda. I never sit down and say, “Boy, I’m going to nail this guy.” I just try to learn. I try to ask good, short questions and listen to the answer. I never sat down wondering if it would make the newspapers tomorrow. I have been doing radio and television since I was 22 and I always looked at it as a

learning experience. “I” didn’t count. I felt the word “I” was irrelevant in an interview. Who cares what I think? If you make the guest count, you are going to get a lot out of them because the guest will feel that. That’s the way I work. My staff would give me bullet points for up-to-date information on a politician’s latest committees and votes, but they didn’t give me questions to ask. Nor have I ever sat down really knowing where I was going. Interviews begin and they flow. I got my start at a restaurant in Miami Beach called Pumpernik’s. There was no guest booked, no producer, people just dropped in. I would interview visiting salesmen and waiters. Suddenly it caught on and one day Bobby Darin came in. Another day, Jimmy Hoffa came in because there was a Teamsters Convention across the street. He came in for breakfast and sat on the air with me. So I was lucky enough to start that way, which taught me that since I couldn’t prepare I could work well off the top of my head. SG: Since we are a gambling magazine, I have to ask if you ever visit the racetracks or casinos?

LK: I really like the casino atmosphere. I love the racetrack, I always have. Bill Hartack, the legendary jockey, was a close friend of mine and with him I got to like that community so I like horseracing. At the casino, I get really frustrated at blackjack because I get mad at the dealer, which is a stupid way to approach it. But when I get five or six cards to get to twenty, and the dealer hits three cards and gets twenty-one, I blame him or her personally and I feel like they are out to get me. I am fascinated in watching craps, although I don’t really know how to play. Slot machines are fun but I really just like the buzz in a casino. I also like the sportsbooks. I really think Louisiana and Mississippi should consider getting them, they are a great source of income and the sports fans really enjoy them! I like to put a bet down on a team or on a horse—I don’t find anything wrong with it. There is too much involved and it’s not like they are really throwing games anymore. They don’t need to ban cell phones. You can’t post bet a race. So, if I had a vote in Mississippi or Louisiana, I would vote to have sportsbooks. But, I love the buzz at the casino anyway.

BLACKJACK: Playing Multi-Card Hands

P

LAYING MULTI-CARD HANDS is often confusing for players. For example, suppose you were dealt an Ace-4 (soft 15) and the dealer shows a 2. You hit and draw a 3 for a soft 17 (Ace-4-2). How would you play the soft 17? What about these multi-card hard hands, a 10-6 and a 4-5-7 against a dealer’s 10 upcard? Would you stand or hit? If you are not sure, stay with me and I’ll show you how to play these multi-card hands perfectly. Let’s begin with multi-card soft hands. These hands contain three or more cards with an Ace counted as an 11. For example, suppose you were dealt an Ace-2 and the dealer’s upcard is a 3. If you look up this hand (soft 13) in a basic strategy table, it would state “H” for hit. Suppose you hit and drew a 5, giving you a multi-card soft 18 (Ace-2-5). If you looked up soft 18 against a 3 in a strategy table, you would see “D” (for double down). However, the double down option is no longer available to you after you hit. So what would you do with your soft 18, stand, or take another hit? The correct play is to stand. Here are two rules that you need to memorize so you will a lways play multi-card soft hands perfectly. 1 Always stand on soft 18 through 21, except hit a multi-card soft 18 against a dealer 9, 10 or Ace. 2 Always hit soft 17 or less. Try these hands so you get the gist of how these rules work. Suppose you are dealt Ace-3, and the dealer shows a 7. You hit and draw an Ace for three-card soft 15 (Ace-3-Ace). You hit again and draw a 2 for a soft 17 (Ace-3-Ace-2). Now what do you do? You’ve converted an initial two-card soft 13 hand into a multi-card soft 17 hand. According to the second rule above, you should hit again. How about this hand: dealer shows a 7 and you have an Ace-4. You draw a 2 for a multi-card soft 17. According to Rule 2, you hit again. Suppose you draw another Ace, giving you a multi-card soft 18 (Ace-4-2-Ace). According to our first rule, you should stand. Try this hand: Ace-4 against a dealer’s 9. You hit your soft 15 and draw a 3 for a multi-card soft 18 (Ace-4-3). According to rule #1, you should hit again. Now let’s focus on multi-card hard hands. These are hands that either don’t contain an Ace, or 24

if the Ace is present, it counts as 1. The most important multi-card hand that requires a change in playing strategy is the multi-card 16. Suppose you are a dealt a 16 against a dealer’s 10 (and surrender is not available). Traditional basic strategy, often referred to as “total-dependent” strategy, tells you to hit your 16, because in the long run, you will lose less money compared to standing. However, what traditional basic strategy doesn’t consider is the composition of the hand. It turns out there is a difference between a 16 made up of two cards, such as 10-6, and a 16 made up of three cards, such as 4-5-7. Both hands total 16, but with the three-card 16, you are better off standing, whereas with the two-card 16, you should hit. The reason you should stand on a 16 when your hand contains three or more cards is your hand contains one or more small-value cards that are no longer available in the pack of unplayed cards. These small cards are exactly what you need to make a pat hand when you hit your 16. The fact that a few of them just landed in your hand is enough to shift the odds toward standing rather than hitting. Here’s another playing tip that doesn’t involve a multi-card hand, but is based solely on the composition of the hand. Suppose you are a dealt a 12 against a dealer’s 4 upcard. Totaldependent basic strategy says you should stand on 12 against a dealer 4. However, there are in fact four different ways to be dealt a 12: 10-2, 9-3, 8-4, and 7-5 (6-6 is considered separately, as a pair to be split). In the specific case of 102, you are slightly better off hitting against the dealer’s 4, whereas with 9-3, 8-4, and 7-5, you are better off standing. Blackjack author Don Schlesinger, gives this reason for the change in strategy: “By having just one ten-value card in your hand when you hold a 10-2, you slightly lower your chances of breaking with a hit just enough to tip the balance in favor of risking busting by drawing one more card, rather than standing. This effect, however, diminishes as the number of decks increases, because removing one ten out of 16 is a lot more dramatic than removing one ten out of 128 for an eight-deck game. Therefore, for six or fewer decks, it’s best to hit a 12 consisting of 10-2 against a dealer’s 4 upcard, but in an eight-deck game, it’s best to stand.”

CRAPS: The Secrets of Hop Bets

SSST … WA N NA K NOW A secret? How about the secrets of hop bets? A hop bet is a little understood, one roll verbal bet you can make on any combination of numbers. For example, if you have an intuitive notion that the combination of 4 and 1 will appear on the very next roll of the dice, you can place a bet for “4 and 1 hopping.” If the 4 and 1 do appear on that very next roll, you win. If the 3 and 2, or any other combination appears, you lose. Sound fun? Keep reading.

by

2 and 2, you will win $150 (30:1) instead of the regular hard 4 payout of 8:1, or in this case, $40. Remember though, a hardway hop (at 30:1) is for one roll only, while regular hardway bets (at 8:1 – 10:1) stay up until it wins or loses. Also, make sure your favorite casino pays 30:1 on the hardway hops before you bet. Some of the older casinos still pay 15:1 so it is beneficial to find out first. Many people also use hop bets when someone is setting the dice or has developed a signature roll, influencing the way the dice are rolling. This is usually evident when the shooter bets big on a certain number. Let’s say the point is 6 and the shooter buys the 4 or 10 for $50. Instead of you buying the same number, you can “hop” it and win lots of money! You can also “hop” the seven on the comeout roll. This is rarely done, but it can be very profitable if you do it correctly. The seven can be made three ways: 3 and 4, 2 and 5, or 1 and 6. So, your bets must be in multiples of $3. You can use simple $3 progression ($3, $6, $9, etc.) especially if the shooter sets the dice and bets big on the pass line.

The payoff for a hop bet is usually 15:1. This means you can bet 2 and 3 hopping, or 4 and 2 hopping or even 3 and 4 hopping. If you bet $5 on any of these bets and the very next roll is for exactly the numbers you bet, you will win $75!

Finally, if you like to lay bets, you have probably thought of hedging your even lay bets (4, 6, 8 or 10) with a hardway wager. If the hard 10 rolls, you lose your $80 lay bet but win $84 (at 7:1) from the hardway bet. Now instead of betting a $12 hard 10, you can bet a $3 hard 10 hopping, which will pay 30:1 instead of 7:1. Remember though, this is a one roll bet so it must be replaced EVERY roll. However, if you lose the $80 when the hardway rolls, you can win $90 ($3 at 30:1) on the hard 10, if it comes up. And if you win your lay bet, you will only lose $3 instead of $12. Now you know the secrets of hop bets!

So, do you want to know the secrets that craps pros use to win the hop bets? Let’s find out! Most people don’t know this, but you can bet on hardways hopping and get a higher payoff. If you think a hardway 4 is “due” you can bet “$5 2 and 2 hop.” Now the good thing about a hardway hop bet is that it pays double that of a hop bet. Instead of getting 15:1, you will get paid 30:1. So if you bet a $5 hardway 4 hop, and the very next roll is 28

CASINO KNOWLEDGE: Q&A with John G.

Q

PL E ASE E X PL A I N SOMEthing to me about how you choose your volatility slot machines. You’ve written about them before, and from what I understand you can choose how often you win. What does that actually mean as far as the overall payback? Are you better off choosing high or low volatility? A Choosing your volatility isn’t about choosing a payback percentage, it’s about choosing a play experience. High, medium and low volatility games all can be programmed to yield the same overall return. It’s the journey of how you get to that payback that differs. Let’s say you’re playing an Incredible Technologies Magic Touch game that gives you a choice between “win big,” “win steady” and “win often.” Not all casinos that buy IT games enable the volatility choice, but those are the games that pioneered volatility choice. If you choose “win big,” you have a better chance at the highest-paying combinations, but the cost is fewer of the small wins that keep you going. The big win is offset by that chance that you’ll lose faster and go through your buy-in. If you pick win often, you’ll have the opposite experience. There’s less chance at the big win that can make your day, but the smaller returns that keep you in your seat will come more often. Pick win steady, and the experience is somewhere in the middle. Some manufacturers use the “choose your volatility” approach only on bonuses, especially on free-spin events. Would you rather have five spins with a 4x multiplier, 10 spins with a 2x multiplier or 20 spins with a 1x multiplier? A big win with a big multiplier is a bonus for the ages, but fewer spins also means you have a better chance of walking away with zero. In the end, more big wins vs. more small wins vs. a more moderate approach balances out, and you’re left with about the same payback percentage. Q I can understand your warnings to blackjack players not to play when blackjacks pay 6-5 instead of 3-2. You don’t want to settle for less than the usual payoff, but what about a single-deck game? I ‘ d always heard single-deck was the best game. If blackjacks pay 6-5 but you’re playing with one deck, isn’t that a good tradeoff for players?

by

JOHN GROCHOWSKI

A No, it’s not a good tradeoff. You lose far more with the 6-5 blackjack pays than you gain by playing with fewer decks. Let’s take an ordinary set of rules. The dealer hits soft 17 (sadly, this is ordinary nowadays), players may split pairs up to three times for a total of four hands, players may double down on any first two cards and may double after splitting pairs. Aces can be split only once, and players get only one more card on each Ace. Blackjacks pay 3-2. With six decks, the house edge against a basic strategy player is 0.59%. Put those same rules on a single-deck game, and it’s nearly an even game, with a house edge of 0.008%. Even in days of yore when blackjack games gave players a better deal than today’s games, this one would have been a rarity.

What happens if you make one adjustment to the single-deck game, and have blackjacks pay 6-5? The house edge soars to 1.40%. Look at that house edge. It’s not just higher than that on the six-deck game, it’s more than double—a house edge 2.37 times as high as that on the six-deck game with the higher blackjack payoff. I don’t know about you, but I want no part of that game. If all other rules are equal, you’re better off with fewer decks. The main reason is that blackjacks occur more frequently with fewer decks. Let’s say the first card we’re dealt is an Ace. In a single deck game, 16 of the other 51 cards are 10 values. That means 31.37% of the remaining cards will complete the blackjack. If six decks are in play, removing an Ace means 96 of the remaining 311 cards are 10-values. That’s 30.87%, meaning we have a lesser chance of completing our blackjack in a six-deck game than in a single-deck game. Fewer decks also help in double down situations. Start with 6-5, and 32% of the other cards are 10s in single-deck blackjack, and 30.97% in six‑deck games. But if all other rules are not equal, you have to weigh the effects of the changes. And for players, the 6-5 blackjack rule is a weighty disadvantage indeed.

VIDEO POKER: Play Without Breaking the Bank

I

’V E V ISITED A VAR IET Y OF gambling locations lately and have noticed a few visible and somewhat alarming changes. It seems like local jurisdictions, whether they’re in Australia or the United States, have their hands stuck out for more money. It may seem virtuous to say all revenues are to be used for education, but when the piece of the pie becomes enormous, it’s bad for the players. Ultimately it becomes a “playing time” issue since gaming is no longer viewed as a way to make money, but rather a form of entertainment. In a nutshell, if $100 bought you approximately one hour of gambling in the past, the same $100 might not last as long in some casinos. Of course, it’s your decision whether you want to continue frequenting gambling halls or go to a show in the future. However, if you choose to play you should consider your gaming budget beforehand or you may be a sad sack on the way home. Here are some tips for keeping your play in your favor. DO THE MATH

Use accurate statistical data to determine the game choice and denomination before you find a seat. For example, today it’s difficult to find 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB), but you’ll probably be able to find 8/5 JOB, which has a lower expected return (ER). To make sure you are aware of the theoretical return, use the free removable ER tables in my book, The Video Poker Edge or WinPoker software. You’ll find that 8/5 JOB pays approximately 2.2% less than 9/6 JOB. This means that you’ll theoretically lose $2.20 more per $100 wagered when you play 8/5 JOB instead of 9/6 JOB. So if you normally bring $200 to the casino, you’ll need $204.40 to play for the same amount of time. This may seem minor, but some games are downgraded even more and some people bring a bigger bankroll. DENOMINATION CHOICE

Honestly, I choose not to play if downgrading is ridiculous, like 7/5 JOB. However, some people say they are captive players in that they arrived with a group and are too bored to just watch. You should then consider playing a lower denomination. In other words, instead of playing dollars try playing quarters. Make sure the pay schedules are the same since some devices downgrade pay tables for smaller denominations. To check the pay schedules, simply push the “see pays” button.

GAME CHOICE

If lowering the denomination doesn’t appeal to you, then consider choosing a less volatile game. You can refer to statistical tables for the exact variance but remember, the higher the variance the riskier the game choice. Volatile games rely on achieving the ER by getting infrequent hands, like 4 Aces or 4 Aces and a Kicker (Ace, Two, Three or Four) in Double Double Bonus (DDB). If you fail to get these rare hands then your bankroll will disappear quickly. Instead, choose a less risky game like Jacks Or Better. However, I caution you to not give up ER in choosing a less volatile game. AVOID MULTI-HANDS

Today you’ll find multi-hand games in abundance on the casino floor. Make sure you determine the total cost of the game so that you’re not fooled into thinking you’re playing the same denomination. For example, if you’re typically a quarter player, a single line game costs $1.25 to play. If you’re suddenly playing 5 hands, then it’s costing you $6.25 per hand – that’s more than it would cost to play a single line dollar device. I’m not saying it’s necessarily a bad choice, but it’s potentially draining your bankroll. And if you only bring a couple hundred dollars, you could be out of cash fast. SELF CONTROL

Never bet more than you can afford to lose, even if that means you’re a short-timer. If you tend to abuse your ATM card, leave it at home. COMMUNICATE WITH MANAGEMENT

If you have tried lowering your denomination, played single lines and selected less volatile games and find you are still running out of bankroll so fast it’s not fun, then you should inform management. You may think that this is a worthless endeavor after learning games are only returning 68% due to the tax rate increases, but that’s not always the case. Management teams understand that without player volume they’ll lose money and will be forced to close their doors.

Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player and knowledgeable video poker player, writes for Southern Gaming, Midwest Gaming and Travel, and Arizona Player. Look for her article in the 2012 and 2013 editions of American Casino Guide. Her book, The Video Poker Edge, includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. The second edition, published in 2010, can be found on Amazon.com, Square One Publishers and at a variety of bookstores. Kindle edition is now available.

“ USE ACCURATE STATISTICAL DATA TO DETERMINE THE GAME CHOICE AND DENOMINATION BEFORE YOU FIND A SEAT”

PUT IT IN WRITING

As tempting as it may be to start venting to the nearest employee out of frustration or expedience, this is rarely effective. Management needs to hear your thoughts first-hand and it’s best to put things in writing.

entertainment along the Mississippi River at Woldenberg Park, just steps away from Harrah’s. And as if the Mississippi River backdrop wasn’t enough, look for the iconic Super Bowl roman numerals on a barge to set the stage. So, where should you start, pre or post kick off? Let’s find out; game on! A MOVEABLE FEAST

Eating and New Orleans go together like feathers and Mardi Gras—you can’t have one without the other. And there’s no better place to connect with a culture through its cuisine than at the Big Easy, where all breakfast, lunch and dinner orders come with a free history lesson on the side.

The New Orleans table reflects a variety of influences including French, Spanish, West African and Caribbean cuisines, and the comfort foods brought by waves of immigrants from Ireland, Italy, Germany and Southeast Asia. New Orleans’ seafood is unparalleled, and its down-home soul food is legendary. For a casual bite, try a muffaletta on crusty French bread, stacked with Italian meats and cheeses, and garnished with chopped green olive salad. Typical Creole fare is on the richer side and includes simmered seafood bisques and garlicky étouffée stews with crawfish and sausage. Jambalaya is the local version of paella and is made with seafood, chicken and sausage. Getting hungry? New Orleans celebrates independently owned restaurants. In fact,

the French Quarter and adjacent Marigny are chain-free zones. Try one of these locally owned hot spots for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and find out for yourself what all the buzz is about.

Café du Monde cafedumonde.com For a true New Orleans experience, stop at 800 Decatur Street and try a café au lait and a beignet—the “N’Awlins” version of the donut that’s deep-fried and dusted with powdered sugar. And as it’s open 24/7, you can come anytime you please. There’s also a take out line in the back towards the river, if you’d prefer to enjoy your beignet and chicory-laced coffee while watching the action on the Mississippi River.

Brennan’s brennansneworleans.com Brennan’s at 417 Royal Street might be the only restaurant in America where breakfast includes cocktails, an appetizer and a dessert for a nearly three-hour process that will keep you sufficiently stuffed until dinner. Touristy? Yes, but that’s because it’s so fun and delicious. Try the Eggs Sardou, poached onto artichoke bottoms and creamed spinach. And Bananas Foster is a must—it’s even rumored that the flambéed bananas and ice dream dessert was first invented here.

Central Grocery centralgroceryneworleans.com Po’boys aren’t the only signature sandwich in this town. Head to 923 Decatur Street to visit a wonderfully cluttered Italian grocery owned by the Tusa family since 1904. Central Grocery is home to the original muffaletta, a Dagwoodsized feast of Italian meats, cheeses and aromatic spicy olive salad. There’s also a vegetarian version that’s just as delicious. And unless you’re absolutely famished, a half will do just fine.

Bayona bayona.com For lunch or dinner, try Bayona at 430 Dauphine Streer, where chef and owner, Susan Spicer, mines the global table without backsliding into fusion territory— and the results are mouthwatering. Entrees, which change seasonally, range from Mediterranean to Asian, Indian to Southwestern, and include seared ceviche with peppered fruit salsa and

Clover Grill clovergrill.com Another great place to check out is, a restaurant that appears brief ly in the movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Always open, Clover Grill at 900 Bourbon Street is known for its juicy (and cheap) burgers that are cooked under its trademark hubcap, which explains their motto: “We love to fry and it shows.”

Located in the swanky Roosevelt Hotel at 123 Barone Street, this Chef John Besh restaurant dazzles with regional Italian cuisine, including what very well may be the best thin crust pizza in town, spicy seafood and bean brodetto, and fazzoletti with house cured guanciale. And, many ingredients are grown on Besh’s farm right outside of New Orleans. Happy hour is a great deal, with pizza offered at half price.

COCKTAIL CULTURE

In a city where many bars never close and daiquiris are served from drivethrough windows, the cocktail culture is as thick as the swampy New Orleans humidity in August. New Orleans is home to several of the world’s oldest and most popular cocktails, dating back to the turn of the 19th century. It’s no surprise that traditional New Orleans bartenders have kept the sacred flame

lovely mansions. Once home to new money Yankee entrepreneurs shunned by the Creoles in the Quarter, the Garden District is now a mix of upscale residential homes and fun shops. On Magazine Street, you’ll find off beat shops selling antiques, secondhand books, art, clothing and accessories. GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD FINDS

The French Quarter Bourbon Street

With its cobblestone streets and Creole cottages laced with ironwork, the French Quarter is the heart and soul of the city to this day. Spanning its length, Bourbon Street is famous for its tacky souvenir shops, abundance of bars and excellent live music. A favorite attraction among tourists, the street is always crowded with lively guests enjoying the chaos. And, thanks to the city’s open container law, it’s completely legal to peruse the shops and bars with a drink in hand, like a Hand Grenade or Huge Ass Beer. Enjoy the party and people watching, but don’t define New Orleans by the hype of this seemingly endless party.

Royal Street Perfect for a leisurely stroll, Royal Street runs parallel to Bourbon Street, just three blocks from the river. Although known for its antique shops and art galleries, there’s a little bit of everything on this thoroughfare, from well-known restaurants like Brennan’s and the posh Rib Room in the Royal Orleans Hotel, to funkier little boutiques and bars. And, the mixture of artwork you’ll see is just as quirky. The Rodrigue Studio at 721 Royal Street showcases the iconic Blue Dog, while Painted Alive at 827 Royal is devoted to artist Craig Tracy’s fine art painted on the human body. You’ll also find a culinary antique store, a shop proffering military hardware and more. Great fun, even if you’re not a shopper.

Garden District For a true change of scenery, take the St. Charles Streetcar into the leafy Garden District with its many live oak trees and

Faubourg Marigny Take a walk to the other side of Esplanade to visit Faubourg Marigny, an originally Creole neighborhood named after 19th century aristocrat and gambler Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville, who invented game of craps. A lively residential neighborhood full of bars, restaurants and music venues, Marigny runs along Frenchmen Street.

Frenchmen Street Decidedly Boho in feel, Frenchmen Street— ive blocks of nonstop action every Friday and Saturday night—is the heart of the Marigny. You’ll find a variety of music from reggae to blues and salsa, and the restaurants reflect a global mix including sushi, Turkish kabobs, Southwestern fare and plenty of Indian curry. An eclectic group of younger urban dwellers and established artists now inhabit the area, contributing to what has grown to become the busiest real estate market in New Orleans. On any night of the week, you can second line down the street with a brass band, catch a reggae set at Cafe Negril, or swing dance at Three Muses and the Spotted Cat, a tiny club booming with brassy jazz combos and acoustic strummers. And get down with rootsy rock and brass at d.b.a., or grunge out at Check Point Charlie’s, a serious rock and roll dive where you can also do your laundry. Cover charges are generally $5-10, but if your wallet is thin, just hang with the crowds, where music pours out of doorways and people are dancing the night away to that contagious New Orleans beat. THE BIG GAME: Behind the Scenes Stats

T

HE SUPER BOWL approaches—one last holiday gift for every sports fan. Every fan dreams that it will be their team’s turn to hoist the Lombardi Trophy come February, but no matter which two teams are battling for the trophy, the Super Bowl is by far the most watched sporting event of the year. Super Bowl Sunday is a time to get together with friends to enjoy delicious food, eye-catching commercials, a highly anticipated half time show and hopefully, a very exciting game. This year marks Super Bowl XLVII and we would like to share some unique facts and stats about this great national tradition—enjoy! MONEY TALKS

That’s right, money talks, and especially with the Super Bowl. If a city is in need of some extra revenue, they should really consider submitting a bid to host the big game, which brings in an estimated $150 million each year, including money spent by fans, media and sponsors. Talk about stimulating the economy! Local businesses want nothing more than a major sporting event like the Super Bowl to come their area—just ask the hotel owners in Indianapolis. Last year, they were able to increase the average hotel room price by 1700%! Meaning a room that normally costs $39 a night went for $725 during Super Bowl XLVI. THE FIRST SCORE IS THE DEEPEST

Being able to score first in a game really gives that team a lot of confidence—possibly even enough to win the game? It’s estimated that the team that scores first in the Super Bowl is 70% more likely to come out on top. Either way, the team that is ahead by the end of the third quarter has ended up winning 86% of the time. So, if you’re making any game bets with friends, keep these stats in mind. BETTER COME HUNGRY!

Well, Super Bowl Sunday is the second largest consumption day in the United States behind Thanksgiving, so be sure to save some room when you head to your Super Bowl party. There will probably be an outrageous amount of food, including a variety of chips, dips, desserts, and of course, chicken wings. No Super Bowl party is complete without a platter full of chicken wings,

and it is estimated that Americans will consume over 100 million pounds this year alone. Are you on a health kick these days? Don’t worry; vegetable trays are actually the number one dish that appears at Super Bowl parties each year. Even though there’s nothing like quite as tasty as a home cooked meal or handmade snack, not everyone has the time or patience to prepare food for a party, which is exactly why around 48 million people order take out or delivery on Super Bowl Sunday each year. PROP BET OR BUST

Are you considering placing a wager on the big game? You’re not alone; about 1 in every 3 adults places a bet on the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, about 92% of those people who bet end up losing. Maybe they predicted the wrong outcome. Or, maybe they didn’t look into prop bets. Prop bets are a unique type of wager where you can place bets in a variety of different categories. For example, bets can be made on the coin toss, Super Bowl MVP, touchdowns for a quarterback, or even the actual start time of the game. If you’re on the fence about betting on the game, keep in mind that there will be over 100 million dollars on the line in Vegas, so don’t be afraid to throw down some money and join in the fun! HEADS OR TAILS?

Winning the coin toss is a huge advantage for a team, or is it? Studies actually show that in past years, the team who has won the coin toss has ended up losing 61% of the time. However, if the game goes into overtime, the team who wins the overtime coin toss has a 60% chance of winning and a 43% chance of scoring on the first possession. Statistics show that tails has come up 60% of the time, and although we all know a coin flip has 50-50 odds, numbers don’t lie. WHAT WOULD YOU GIVE UP?

Attending the Super Bowl is without a doubt, a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you were given the chance to attend the big game, what would you be willing to sacrifice? In a recent survey, a random group of people were asked that same question: 23% said they would give up a vacation, 21% said an important work responsibility, 20% said a wedding of a friend or family member, 19% said a funeral of a loved one and 15% said the birth of a child. Surprised? Apparently the Super Bowl is worth a lot to some people.

STROKE FOR STROKE: Is your golf game on par?

T

HE FIRST STEP TO BECOMING a better golfer is to understand what you’re doing wrong and what you need to do to fix it.

FACTS

Golf Is a Game of Opposites How to get the ball airborne? To hit the ball up, we must swing down. Why? Well, let’s first think about what initially gets the golf ball in the air—loft. Loft pre-exists on every golf club. You do not need to add loft to a club by hitting up on the ball in order to get it into the air. Next, what keeps the ball in the air? Backspin. By hitting down on the ball, we are compressing it more and generating more backspin. The more loft we have, the more backspin we are able to create. Finally, hit the little ball (golf ball) before the big ball (Earth). In order to strike the golf ball before the ground, you must hit down on it. This means that the bottom of your swing arc must be slightly ahead of the golf ball.

What Causes a Ball to Curve Face to path relationship. Thanks to Doppler radar and tools like Trackman (a teaching/fitting device that captures over 20 swing and ball flight variables), we now know that clubface has more influence on where the ball starts than we had once thought. In the past, it was generally agreed upon that swing path determines where the ball will start and that it will curve to where the clubface is pointed at impact. Now we know that clubface actually has a 75%-85% influence on where the ball starts. The amount of curve a shot has is determined by the amount of sidespin created. The greater the difference in swing path and clubface, the greater the curve created. Let’s use this information to “cure” someone that slices the ball. A slice is created when the clubface is aimed further to the right, for right-handed golfers, than the swing path at impact. So, if we are slicing the ball right we need to swing more left ... right? Golf is a game of opposites. In order to “cure” a slice, we must first make sure we have a good swing path. Remember, swing path will determine a lot of the balls curvature. The more left we swing, the more the ball will have to curve 44

right to go towards our target. We must swing the golf club from the inside. FICTION

Keep Your Head Down Video shows that it is nearly impossible to pick your head up prior to impact. Focusing on keeping your head down will only restrict your ability to turn.

Slow Down Students often say that if they could just slow down they would be able to hit solid golf shots more consistently. The truth is, if you have a bad golf swing and slow it down, you’re only developing a slow, bad golf swing.

Colby Wolitz is a certified teaching professional and is currently the assistant pro at Hunting Creek Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Straight Left Arm Yes, we do prefer that the left arm be straight during the golf swing. However, focusing on a straight left arm generally creates tension and tight muscles are an instant speed killer.

A Draw Goes Further Than a Fade There really is no difference in distance between a ball with left sidespin and a ball with right sidespin, provided that factors like clubhead speed and loft are equal. Don’t think slice and hook, think left and right sidespin. If this were true, since a hook for right-handed golfers creates left sidespin, and we think left sidespin makes a ball travel further, wouldn’t a slice for left-handed golfers producing the same left sidespin travel further than a hook for left-handed golfers? The reason most people hit a draw further is simply because this shot is produced with a clubface closed to swing path, which creates less effective loft than a clubface open to swing path. We want to hit our drives with topspin because the ball will roll more when it lands. A ball hit with topspin will not be in the air long enough to leave the tee box. All golf shots that travel in the air have backspin. We want to hit our drives with less backspin (between 2,000 and 3,000 RPMs).

“ A SLICE IS CREATED WHEN THE CLUBFACE IS AIMED FURTHER TO THE RIGHT, FOR RIGHT-HANDED GOLFERS, THAN THE SWING PATH AT IMPACT”

Lower Lofted Drivers Will Hit the Ball Further This is only true if you produce the proper launch angle with a lower lofted driver. The correct driver for you is one that will launch the ball between 13°–16° and produce a low amount of backspin. High launch with low spin creates long drives.

f you’ve been around the casino scene for a couple of decades, chances are you remember table game pits being dominated by four games. Blackjack was the most popular of course, followed by craps, then roulette, and for the high rollers there was baccarat. To spice things up and add a little variety, there was a card game called Red Dog where players bet that a third card would rank between the first two dealt. And Big Six wheels, ones that featured different currency denominations in slots on a vertical wheel, were more common than they are today. Some casinos also had Sic Bo, the Asian dice game. Notice anything missing? There was only one poker-based game 46

among the common mix of the time. That was Pai-Gow Poker, and not every casino had it. So what about poker? Back then, the place for poker was in the poker rooms. A big change has come with today’s table pits. Caribbean Stud Poker started a revolution in the 1990s, followed by Let It Ride and Three Card Poker. All are based on stud poker, and all are easy to understand within a few hands of play. Those of us who grew up playing some kind of poker at home have an easy grasp on the ranking of poker hands. We know that two pair beats a pair, and three of a kind beats two pair. And if Three Card Poker throws us a curve with straights that outrank flushes, well, we can adapt to that easily enough.

Those three games have been around long enough now to become casino standards. They’re not as popular as blackjack or craps, but they fill larger niches than PaiGow Poker or Sic Bo, and have proven far longer lasting than Red Dog. Once the breakthrough was made, making games available that are easy to understand and easy to deal just made sense to casino operators, game manufacturers and players alike. Shuffle Master, the largest developer and distributor of new table games, has been especially quick to build on the success of poker-based games. One look around a modern casino and you will find poker games are a standard part of the mix, and it’s not only that new-era big three of Caribbean Stud, Let

It Ride and Three Card Poker. Another generation of games has arrived, building on the success of the originals. You won’t find them in every casino, but don’t be surprised to run across Mississippi Stud, Four Card Poker, Crazy 4 Poker, High Five Poker or Texas Hold’em Bonus Poker. MISSISSIPPI STUD

How to Play This is a five-card stud poker variation that you start by making an ante. The dealer then gives you two cards face down, and deals three community cards face down. After you look at your cards, you may make a bet of one to three times the ante. There’s a second round of betting after the first community card is turned face up, and another after the second community card, for a total of three rounds of betting. During each round of wagering, the player may bet one, two or three times the ante, or they may fold the hand. If you go all the way through with 3x bets, you can end up with 10 times your original ante on the table, meaning your $5 ante can turn into $50 in total wagers. If you’re playing optimal strategy and betting the max at every opportunity, then most of the time you’ll have a winner. After the last card is turned up, bets are paid according to a pay table that starts at getting your money back on a pair of 6s through 10s and tops out a 500-1 on a royal flush. The full pay table: Royal flush 500-1; straight flush 100-1; four of a kind 40-1; full house 10-1; flush 6-1; straight 4-1; three of kind 3-1; two pairs 2-1; high pair (Jacks or better) 1-1; middle pair (6s-10s) push–you get your money back. There is no dealer hand to beat; there is no qualifying hand to worry about as with many other stud poker-based games. You’re not going to end up with a great hand only to find you’re being paid only on the ante because the dealer didn’t have good enough cards. The intrigue and strategy in this game comes solely from knowing when to raise and when to fold.

Strategy Never make bets of double the ante. Your viable choices on each round are to bet three times your ante, match your ante or fold. Michael Shackelford’s website, wizardofodds.com, has a complete analysis

of the game. There is a fairly lengthy strategy table with a breakdown on what you should do after 2, 3 and 4 cards. 1 After two cards, raise three times your bet with any pair, or one time your bet with at least one high card; two middle cards, or consecutive cards 6-5 or better of the same suit.

FOUR CARD POKER

How to Play Another stud poker game, Four Card Poker involves playing against the dealer. You start by making an ante then you’re dealt five cards and the dealer gets six. After you’ve seen your cards, you may bet one, two or three times your ante, or fold the hand.

2 After three cards, raise three times your If you stay in the game by making a bet, bet with any paying hand of a middle pair you then choose four cards to make your or higher; three cards to a royal; three best hand, while discarding the fifth. There’s also a bonus pay if you have at least three of a kind. There are multiple pay tables available for the bonus, but the one I saw in action when Midwest Gaming and Travel compatriot Henry Tamburin and I went to a Four Card Poker table in Windsor a few years ago. The pay was 25 times your ante on four of a kind, 20-1 on straight flushes and 2-1 on three of a kind.

Strategy Forget about raising two times the ante. You’ll be going for 3x or 1x wagers, or else folding. Strategy is easy. Fold with a pair of 2s or less, bet 1x on a pair of 3s through 9s, or bet 3x on a pair of 10s or better.

Side Bet Four Card Poker comes with a second betting option called Aces Up. In most casinos that have Four Card Poker, you can either play against the dealer, or bet Aces Up, or play both–just as you have options in Three Card Poker with play against the dealer and Pairs Plus. Aces Up gets its name from the bottom payout. If you have a pair of Aces, your Aces Up bet will be paid at even money. The dealer’s hand doesn’t matter in this 48

portion of the game, you’re paid according to a pay table that rises to 2-1 on two pairs, 5-1 on a straight, 6-1 on a flush, 7-1 on three of a kind, 30-1 on a straight flush or 40-1 on four of a kind. CRAZY 4 POKER

does the same. When hands are compared, the dealer must have King-high or better to qualify. If the dealer does not qualify, you’re paid even money on your Play bet, and you get your ante back. If the dealer qualifies and you have the better hand, you’re paid even money on ante and bet, and if you lose, you lose both ante and bet. As in “ THOSE OF US Four Card Poker, three of a WHO GREW UP kind outranks both flushes and straights. PLAYING SOME

At the start, you make ante and Super Bonus wagers of the same size. After you’ve seen your five cards, you must either make a play bet, or fold and lose both ante and Super Bonus bet. If you stay, your play bet must be equal to your ante unless you have a pair of Aces. With an Ace pair, you may bet three times the ante.

You then discard one card while making your best four-card hand, and the dealer

On the Super Bonus bet, you’re paid on any hand of a straight or better, with a pay table of 200-1 on four Aces, 30-1 on any other four of a kind, 15-1 on a straight flush, 2-1 on three of a kind, 1.5-1 on a flush and even money on a straight.

Strategy Game analyst Stanley Ko, who does the math for many game designers for their submissions to regulators, has devised a simple strategy for Crazy 4. Match your ante with a play bet whenever you have King-Queen-8-4 or better, and bet three

times the ante whenever you have a pair of Aces. With anything less than KingQueen-8-4, fold.

Side Bet Crazy 4 comes with an optional side bet called Queens Up, and the name tells you just what it is–you’ll be paid on any hand from a pair of Queens on up. There are several pay tables available, with the best paying 50-1 on four of a kind, 30-1 on a straight flush, 9-1 on three of a kind, 4-1 on a flush, 3-1 on a straight, 2-1 on two pairs, and even money on a pair of Queens, Kings or Aces. On some games, the straight flush payoff will rise to 40-1, but the three of a kind pay will drop to 8-1 or 7-1. Because three of a kind occurs much more often than a straight flush, the highest-paying games are the ones with the higher three‑of‑a‑kind payoffs. HIGH FIVE POKER

How to Play Introduced in 2008 and not yet as widespread as some other poker-based games, High Five uses a 53-card deck. The extra card is a joker than can be used to complete flushes or straights, a la pai-gow poker. Players start with an ante, then players a nd dea ler eac h receive seven cards. You can either fold and forfeit your ante, or make a bet equal to the ante. If you bet, you discard two cards and make your best five-card hand. The dealer qualifies with a pair of 6s, or if the player has a straight. If the dealer has lower-ranking hand than two 6s, and I have a straight while you have a pair of 10s, then the dealer qualifies against me but not against you.

stay in the hand nearly 68 percent of the time. It is theoretically possible to improve on this strategy, staying in some hands with a pair of 6s and folding some pairs of 7s of 8s. However, Michael Shackelford of wizardofodds.com notes that kickers, discards and suits are all factors in the decisions, and that the exceptions are extremely difficult to study.

Side Bet The Trips side bet pays on any three of a kind or better. Game manufacturer Shuffle Master makes several pay tables available to manufacturers. All start with an even money payoff on three of a kind, and rise to 2-1 on straights, 4-1 on flushes, 7-1 on most full houses, 40-1 on four of a kind, 50-1 on straight flushes, 100-1 on royal flushes and 200-1 on five Aces— remember, High Five has that joker that can be used as a fifth Ace. The variation comes in the return on a full house that includes three aces. The best version pays 25-1 on Aces-up full houses, while others pay 20-1 or 15-1.

or check and stick with the bets already on the table. After the one-card Turn is dealt, the process repeats. No bet is necessary, but players may either check, or make a River bet equal to the ante. Then the final card, the River, is turned face up. At that point, players and dealer all use their own two hole cards plus the five community cards to make their best five card hands. If the dealer bets you, you lose all your bets on the table—ante and Flop bets, plus any Turn or River wagers. If you beat the dealer, you win even money on the Flop, Turn and River bets. You’re paid even money on the ante only with a straight or better. With lower-ranking hands, if you win, you get the ante back.

Strategy After you’ve seen your first two cards, fold with 2-3, 2-4. 2-5, 2-6 or 2-7 of mixed suits. Otherwise, stay in the game and see what the Flop brings. After that, strategy gets very complicated, with a large number of possibilities. TEXAS HOLD’EM BONUS POKER

How to Play With the popularity of Texas Hold’em in poker rooms, on television and online, it’s only natural that table games versions would be developed with play against the dealer instead of against other players. Texas Hold’em Bonus Poker became one of the more widespread of these. It’s a seven-card, Hold’em-based game, complete with two hole cards on the initial deal, a three-card Flop, a one-card Turn and a final-card River. Just as in other poker-based games, you start with an ante. Players and the dealer are each dealt two cards face down. After you look at yours, you may either fold or make a Flop bet of twice the ante. The dealer turns three cards face up (the Flop) and players may either make a Turn bet of equal the ante,

Bonus Bet

There’s an optional side bet on your first two cards. The big payoff is a 30-1 on a pair of Aces, followed by 25-1 on Ace-King suited, 20-1 on Ace-Queen or Ace-Jack suited, 15-1 on Ace-King of different suits, 10-1 on pairs of Jacks, Queens or Kings, 5-1 on Ace-Queen or Ace-Jack of different suits, and 3-1 on pairs of 2s through 10s. There’s a different version of the bonus bet that takes into account both player and dealer hole cards, but I’ve not yet seen that one in a casino. Should you spot that one, the big payoff is a 1,000-1 bonanza when both you and the dealer have pocket Aces. Easy enough? Sure. Even with the most complex of these, any player who knows their flushes from their straights would pick up the basics within a few hands. The casinos are counting on it.

t may be tough for some companies to embrace growth during these diff icult economic times, but Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BY D) is pursuing an aggressive stance in the gaming industry by strengthening its portfolio with the addition of six properties in some of the nation’s strongest growth regions, including expansion of its significant presence in the South. For some time, Boyd Gaming has been looking to diversify its holdings and strengthen the company by expanding into regional markets across the country. In general, the company’s Midwest and Southern regions have had the strongest and most resilient business over the last several years, with eight quarters of EBITDA growth. 50

Boyd Gaming fired its first shot in the summer of 2011 with its purchase of IP Casino Resort Spa in Biloxi, one of the premier resorts on the Gulf Coast and Boyd Gaming’s first property in southern Mississippi. “This acquisition is an excellent fit to our existing business and provides further geographic diversification by giving us a presence in a leading regional destination market,” said Keith Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Gaming. Smith also indicated that more acquisitions are on the way, adding, “We will continue to look for additional acquisitions that are complementary to our current operations, deliver a solid return and are priced appropriately.”

The search was short. Less than a year later on May 16, 2012, Boyd Gaming announced an agreement to acquire Peninsula Gaming for $1.45 billion. Regarded as a “transformative transaction” by Smith, the Peninsula deal gave Boyd Gaming five additional properties— Evangeline Downs and Amelia Belle in Louisiana; two Diamond Jo properties in Iowa; and the highly successful Kansas Star Casino, which opened near Wichita less than a year ago. Just before the transaction closed in November 2012, Smith said, “This is a significant milestone, and we look forward to welcoming the Peninsula team to Boyd Gaming. The acquisition of Peninsula Gaming will strengthen our company financially by diversifying

our operations, nearly doubling our cash f low and delivering substantial value for our shareholders.” With these t wo acquisitions, Boyd Gaming estimates that about two-thirds of the company’s total EBITDA will now come from the Midwest and Southern United States. While the entire region has performed well for Boyd Gaming, the Gulf Coast has been the company’s particular strength in recent years. In the third quarter, for example, Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel in Louisiana and the IP reported the strongest growth of any of Boyd Gaming’s properties. Boyd Gaming has been a player in the Southern gaming market for nearly two decades, but these acquisitions took the company’s presence in Louisiana and Mississippi to new levels. Nearly one-third of Boyd Gaming’s 22 properties are now located in the South, and the company has grown to become Louisiana’s largest single operator, with five separate locations.

PLAYER STRATEGY

BEGINNING STAGES: Steal the Blinds? No!

W

ITH THE BLINDS LOW relative to stack size, and no antes required yet, it is important to stick to a “top ten” only strategy—especially when the pot has been raised before the flop. But with this stricture in mind as a starting point, we need to open the door a bit to other hands in unraised pots. This can be a good time to play hands like A-x suited, suited connectors like 8h-7h, and small pairs. Again, I say: in unraised pots. The attraction is that you may win a lot of money if you hit these kinds of hands occasionally. The reason to play super-tight when there is no ante, and when no one has raised before the flop, is that you can steal only small amounts of money even when you do raise the pot. Say the blinds are $100-$200, and everyone has $5,000 in chips. Every time you pop it up to, say, $600 to go, in order to steal the blinds, you’re making $300 profit ($100+$200). Which means you’re risking $600 to make $300 each blind-stealing raise. When blinds are $100-$200 with a $25 a player ante (as required in later rounds of most tournaments), then you win $525 at a ninehanded table ($100+$200+$225). In this case, you risk $600 to win $525, which is a much better yield. If the blind steal works 50 percent of the time, then you are losing a little bit of money, but if it works 75 percent of the time (75 percent is the traditional average), then you’re doing really well. Of course, if you wait for one player to call in front of you before you raise it up, then you would win $725 a pop, which means that you’re making money even if everyone folds only 50 percent of the time.

THE EARLY ANTE STAGES: TAKE CONTROL?

At this point in the tournament there is a better mathematical argument for “getting involved.” But certain players (me, on occasion) like to sit back and let others “do the dirty work.” These players like to let the other players go crazy, and then nail them when they finally do have a nice hand. It just depends on who is at your table, and what they seem to be doing. A lot of times I will sit back and let other players outplay me for long periods of time, and then “felt them” (bust them, leaving nothing but felt). I let them think they can outplay me, even going so far as folding the best hand more than once when the hand is close, which encourages them to feel comfortable moving in on me; then bang, they’re busted. Many times these days I’m forced to sit back and set the bait, but I will always take what the able gives me, and I’ll raise and reraise when I have good reads (or good hands), or when the table is particularly passive. So at an aggressive able, I will relax and wait until the aggressive players give me their chips (or outdraw me!). When I’m at a passive table, I will control the action by making raises and reraises. LATER ON, WELL AFTER THE DINNER BREAK

It makes sense to wait for the antes to kick in before you get too involved with blind stealing, or with moving over the top of the other blind stealers. Of course, once the antes are in effect, you know that more people are attempting to steal the blinds, and this is another reason to come over the top of people later, rather than sooner. So sit back, play patiently for the first few preante levels, in hopes that you will have a couple of nice situations come up and propel you to some kind of profit. But be sure to pay attention to the others at you table in order to gain insight into their play. Do they check-raise when they hit a big hand, or do they bet it? Try to sharpen up your reads on the opponents at your table. These

Some will be fighting all day long to play tight enough, and then suddenly revert to their more natural loose style. Some will be avoiding the over-the-top move that they love, but now they lose their discipline and start coming over the top. Some will simply disintegrate under the pressure—more often than not, that happens somewhere among the final 18 players.

| SOUTHERNGAMING.COM

PHIL HELLMUTH, JR.

reads will allow you either to make good moves on your opponents later, or to make good lay downs against them. Remember that “the game is on” only after you hit the antes, and patience will help you make it that far.

If you’re still in there late with at least average chip stacks, then whatever you’re doing that day is working. Don’t change it until you reach the final 12 players. Stick to what brought you there for the next few levels of play. Pay attention to some of the older players or the more fatigued players, because many of them will become easier to read the later the hour. When players get tired, they will make more mistakes and will lean too heavily on the very character that makes up their nature.
