“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. His hands can’t hit what his eyes can’t see.” These words were proclaimed by the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali. It was one of many inspiring sayings he uttered in his lifetime as he became a world icon in and out of the ring breaking barriers of race and religion all while accomplishing many great lifetime achievements. Ali passed away June 3, 2016, but his spirit will live on forever. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Ali came from a humble background and jumped into boxing when he was 12 after a kid stole his bike. Ali, then Cassius Clay, was so mad he wanted to go fight the boy and get his bike back. The only problem was that he didn’t know how to fight. Well, let’s just say that kid picked the wrong bike to steal! He climbed the boxing ranks quickly winning the Light Heavyweight gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics when he was 18 and his first of three heavyweight championships when he was 22 and remains the only person to ever accomplish this feat. This issue pays tribute to Muhammad Ali who will go down as one of the greatest athletes, and human beings, of all-time. on the table is “Is it gambling or a game of skill?” The definition of gambling is ‘to play any game of chance for money or other stakes.’ With fantasy sports, you basically choose a sport, build a roster of players from available players, and enter your roster into a contest against other players doing the same thing. Points accrue based on your rosters performance in the game. Each player carries a ‘value’ and your roster is set to a pre-determined salary cap. So, you can’t simply load your roster with the best players because the salary cap will limit you from doing so. So, is it gambling? Check out the article for where things stand and what the future might hold.

uhammad Ali was simply “The Greatest.” The former boxing world champion was a sports legend and he was a global icon. A l i w a s a t r a n s c e n d e nt f i g u r e , transformative inside and outside of the ring. But now The Greatest is gone. Ali passed away on June 3 at the age of 74 in a hospital in the Phoenix-area after a long battle with Parkinson’s syndrome and the cause of death was septic shock due to unspecific natural causes. The death of Ali resonated around the world. It hit hard in his hometown of

Louisville where “The Louisville Lip” was discovered, the pain was felt all across the United States by people of all colors and all persuasions and by folks who mourned and celebrated his life all around the world. “He’ll be remembered as a man of the world who spoke his mind and wasn’t afraid to take a chance, he went out of his way to be a kind, benevolent individual that really changed the world,” family spokesman, Bob Gunnell, said. Ali won 56 of his career 61 fights, including 37 knockouts during his boxing career that spanned 21 years. He had a 31-match winning streak until Joe Frazier beat

him for the first time in the Fight of the Century in 1971. But you know Ali made a massive impact when his nickname encompassed the words: “The Greatest.” And not just because of boxing. Along with that fearsome reputation as a fighter, Ali made an even bigger impact outside of the ring. His legacy grew because of the respect people – not just boxing fans – had for him for his courage and openness on issues that had nothing to do with sports. Ali, whose brash way of speaking became his trademark, spoke out against racism, war and religious intolerance, while

becoming a role model for AfricanAmericans at the height of the civil rights era and beyond. He was stripped of his world boxing crown for refusing to join the U.S. Army and fight in Vietnam, but later returned to recapture the title and compete in some of the most memorable bouts in the history of the sport. “It’s a sad day for life, man,” Don King, who promoted some of Ali’s biggest fights, told The Associated Press. “I loved Muhammad Ali, he was my friend. Ali will never die. Like Martin Luther King his spirit will live on, he stood for the world.” Despite his debilitating illness, Ali continued to be front and center in the public eye raising awareness for the battle against Parkinson’s. He traveled the world and while his voice was quieter in his older age, he still received raucous receptions whenever and wherever he might show up.

American Civil Rights Activist Jesse Jackson called Ali “a hero.” “Here is the most visible guy in the world, as an athlete, taking on the most visible war in the world in which thousands of people are being killed every day,” Jackson told The Louisville Courier-Journal just after his death. Ali made his mark in the ring and all over the world. He was a three-time heavyweight champion of the world. After defeating Zbigniew Pietrzykowski for the gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Ali would only lose five times in his career and won 56 fights, including his first 31 bouts. But he wasn’t always the heavy favorite. Ali’s professional journey in the ring began in October of 1960 when he won all six rounds of a fight in Louisville’s Freedom Hall against Tunney Hunsaker. The biggest fight of Ali’s career was his

first against Sonny Liston, who became the heavyweight champion after knocking out Floyd Patterson. In the 1964 fight, Liston was a big favorite over Ali, who was still Cassius Clay at the time. Only three out of four dozen sportswriter picking the fight sided with Ali. Ali pulled off what some call the “one of the biggest upsets in boxing history,” by technical knockout when Liston couldn’t come out for the seventh round because of a shoulder injury. He knocked out Liston in the first round of a fight in May of 1965, he won the “Rumble In The Jungle” over George Foreman in October of 1974 and took out Joe Frazier in the “Thrilla in Manilla” in October of ’75. In all, Ali competed in 12 states along with Germany, Canada, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Philippines, Malaysia, the Congo, Indonesia, Japan, Ireland, Germany and the United Kingdom.

But when it came to putting on a show, he liked Las Vegas more than any place and had his ties to the city that go back more than 60 years. Ali fought seven times in Las Vegas. But he not only won fights in Sin City, but also still has one of the most popular exhibits in the famous Wax Museum on the Vegas Strip. He also make numerous Vegas appearances including a famous one backstage in 1973 to take photos with Elvis, he also saw daughter, Laila, fight in all three weight classes and a win there in 2011. Ali went 5-2 in Las Vegas, with his first fight in 1961 when he beat Duke Sabedong at the old Las Vegas Convention Center. Ali returned to Las Vegas in 1965, and on Nov. 22 he dominated Floyd Patterson at the Convention Center to retain his title. Once he returned to boxing in 1970 after being barred for refusing to serve in the Vietnam War, Ali beat Jerry Quarry in Atlanta and then won the rematch with Quarry at the Las Vegas Convention Center in June of 1972. He also won over Joe Bugner in ’73 and 12

Ron Lyle in ’75 in Vegas, but that would be all of his wins in Vegas. Ali lost three of the final four fights of his career and two were in Vegas. Leon Spinks scored a 15-round split decision at the Las Vegas Hilton in February of ’78 and in October of ’80, Ali trainer Angelo Dundee had a fight against Larry Holmes stopped after the 10th round. While he never fought in Vegas again, Ali kept his connection. He made plenty of visits and appearances and his daughter Rasheda Ali Walsh – lives in Vegas. Two of his grandsons, Biaggio and Nico, also live there. Biaggio is a senior running back at Bishop Gorman High School and is a top recruit nationally. He scored two touchdowns as Ali watched him in the state championship games two years ago. “Until Ali, no one said, ‘I’m beautiful’,” George Foreman tweeted after Ali’s death. He was royalty, yet common man with his pal. That is beauty, the greatest kind.” The week after his death was truly a celebration. Ali planned his own funeral in the years leading up to his death and the details were in what the family called “the

book.” His body was transported back to Louisville two days after his death. And true to his character, Ali wanted it as open as possible with a chance for all of his fans to say their goodbyes. There were three days of funeral proceedings that included a festival downtown called “I Am Ali,” a public Muslim service and a procession that he mapped out that saw his hearse driven on a route through town. “He’d come back in the neighborhood after most of his fights,” longtime friend and former Tennessee basketball coach Wade Houston told Louisville’s WDRBTV. “He’d always come back driving that recreational vehicle, down Grand Street, and police would pull him over, look in the window, and see Ali, then say, ‘Slow that thing down, champ.’ And he’d keep on driving. he sound level on the ongoing controversy over fantasy sports betting has reached a crescendo and has moved from states’ rulings on the legality of this enormously popular pursuit to the US Congress, which has decided to look into the activity that has grown into a cultural phenomenon. The House subcommittee hearing was labeled “Daily Fantasy Sports: Issues and Perspectives,” and nothing was decided. It’s a bizarre industry where some of the biggest professional sports team owners, who shun the legalization of sports betting outside of Nevada, have invested heavily in the fantasy world. Don’t be mistaken,

however, about the designation “fantasy.” This is a serious business and, while there are no accurate counts, some industry observers state that more than 30 million Americans participate. Last year alone in excess of $3.1 billion was deposited by players. Eilers Research estimates that Americans spent some $160 billion on illegal sports gambling last year outside of Las Vegas, which has a stranglehold on legal sports betting. That amount of money attracts attention and the fantasy companies have tapped into the cash gusher with gusto, as have other major sports and media companies.

Leading fantasy companies, such as FanDuel and DraftKings, have been operating in a Wild West environment until recently when attorney generals in many states decided that the business was illegal or were considering legislation and closer scrutiny. The business operates under a protective umbrella that playing fantasy sports is not gambling, as it requires skill to be successful. It is a flimsy defense, however, and the gold rush has slowed as that premise is challenged more and more. The fantasy landscape is constantly changing but as this issue of Gaming and Destinations was going to press, 11 states

have ruled it illegal. ruled it illegal. The industry took its biggest hit recently when it was ruled illegal in New York.

FanDuel have both reached agreements with the NCAA that they will no longer support college daily fantasy sports.

What is fascinating about the whole business is how major organizations have become the biggest investors in an industry that could become illegal across the board in the not-to-distant-future.

While the NCAA is clear in its mind that fantasy sports is indeed gambling, the debate rages on: game of skill or gambling. Can’t be both, but this dog is hunting two different animals at the same time and something has to give, sooner or probably later. Much later as the process winds through turf battles.

The vast scope of fantasy gambling requires technological support and this support is provided by some of the biggest names out there such as ESPN, Fox Sports, Yahoo, CBS Sports and, of all things, by the NFL. It’s big biz and with partners like Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and New England Patriots owner Robert Craft it must be legal. It’s hard to accept that the NFL, which has been hell on sports betting, operates its own fantasy football strategy program, NFL FANTASY LIVE, has its own cable network and airs a real-time highlights show on NFL RED ZONE all of which appeal to the fantasy football fan. All of this has not escaped the attention of the National Basketball Association and Commissioner Adam Silver. They were part of an investment group that pumped some $70 million into FanDuel helping its claim for legitimacy. Nor far behind was DraftKings that raised $40 million from investors last August.

Gambling Enforcement Act, states fantasy sports are not considered an unlawful wager, but the act only prohibits the electronic transfer of funds from unlawful gambling. Without regulations there have been instances of abuse, and the most notable one took place in New York after it was alleged that employees of DraftKings and FanDuel used inside information to “win” $350,000 from each other. Caveat emptor.

This writer is not a lawyer, but here is the picture as it stands now. Playing daily fantasy sports for money is currently legal in North America. Federal law has ruled it a game of skill and therefore not gambling.

In the wake of that mess, lawyers got their pay days and class-action suits were filed all over the place alleging fraud, negligence, racketeering and false advertising.

The skill angle comes from players competing against others in building a team of pro athletes under a salary cap, and earning points based on the actual statistical performance of the players in real-time games. The skill angle takes on a whole new dimension, however, as software/computer sharks use algorithms to their advantage wiping out any belief in playing on a level field.

Millions have been spent on aggressive advertising, most notably television with ESPN leading the way and FOX Sports also in the hunt. It has since been reported that ESPN has backed out of its contract with DraftKings and that FOX has cut back on its investment with DraftKings at a loss of some $95 million. Critics argue that players are gambling because they are making real-time bets on the varying performances of individual athletes in specific games. However, the legality is determined state-to-state based on local gambling laws.

In conclusion, while the firefights will continue to flame around fantasy sports betting, and Las Vegas frets over incursions on its virtually exclusive sports betting empire, the real money is flowing out to numerous offshore gambling sites. This unregulated empire is the best and easiest way for serious sports bettors to play. While attorney generals and Congress squabble with fantasy companies and the pro sports leagues promote hypocrisy, a player can use a credit card to send and receive money, have the latest odds on all the games and use a phone or computer

This year’s national championship event is set for September 26 at The Venetian in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“This tournament is very different from slot tournaments,” D’Andrilli noted. “We are using casinos that have our games to qualify patrons, and then we throw the parties, have the tournament and pay out the money. It is a ‘thank you’ that we offer the operators, who then pass it on to their customers, for keeping and placing our games in their casinos. No second-tier table games vendors can offer a promotion like this.” The great news for players is that no additional wager is required to qualify for a seat in the national championship event, which includes $1,250 in travel expenses, a welcome party the night before the tournament itself and the VIP treatment throughout.

The two new qualifying games added to this year’s menu of 10 games were Flushes Gone Wild and DJ Wild. Does it sound tough to qualify? It wasn’t for 87 players who hit the required qualifying hand in 2015. They ranged in age from 24 to 82, came from three countries and more than a dozen states. The winner among the seven players at the final table of the inaugural tournament was Iona Akelipa of Everett, WA, who took home $100,000. Lucas Kendall from Fenton, MO, was second ($50,000) and Jesse Luis Sorto from Corinth, TX, was third ($30,000). All seven players received cash awards plus a celebratory cocktail party event inside The Venetian.

VIDEO POKER: Never Too Cool for School When I taught high school math, some students wanted to skip the most challenging topics. I chalked it up to being normal teens, too cool for school and having more interest in their electronic toys than learning to derive the quadratic formula. Nobody, however, has a crystal ball that can tell you what skills you will need down the road, and the ability to reason logically certainly is needed to master new technology. How about if you just want to play poker in a gambling hall or backgammon with friends for bragging rights? Whether your game is chess, bridge or any number of casino options with a skill component, say blackjack (BJ), Hold’Em, or video poker (VP), you increase your odds of winning by studying the game. If you don’t believe me, read some of the brilliant work by poker greats like Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer (“The Professor”), Phil Gordon (poker player who wrote “Little Green Book”) and a long list of other poker whizzes. If you want to be a top player you can’t rely solely on lady luck, who comes to visit, never to stay. Here are some tips for schooling yourself on accurate VP holds. TUTORIAL SOFTWARE Unless you’re mad at your money, you should study correct card holds before sliding bills into the machine. You can argue that some unpredictable good fortune may occur, but nobody knows when they’re walking around lucky. In fact that’s why the Phil Ivey’s of this world don’t win the World Series of Poker (WSOP) every year. Sometimes a newcomer will find their way to the final table and, even though that individual will be a gifted player, they aren’t necessarily the best in the field of entries. Unlike the poker table game, VP involves no psychological factors, like “tells” (gestures that provides astute players clues as to what’s in a competitor’s hand), so your results are based solely on cards dealt and held. You should base your holds on statistical data instead of hunches. Over time that will give you the best results, although anything is possible in short sessions. Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker is, in my opinion, the best tutorial software on the market.

PUBLICATIONS Gaming & Destinations and other publications are must haves if you want to keep up with the latest trends in gambling and get playing tips from the experts. Remember that gaming is a mercurial activity and rules along with options are ever-changing. PRACTICE You may think you’re going to retain each and every correct hold for a VP game, but there are so many dealt hand possibilities along with rare hand exceptions, penalty cards and condition of the remaining deck exceptions that you will want to refresh your playing skills before heading to the casino. You can test your retention by using Zamzow’s “warn” mode during practice. GAME CHOICES Some say they get bored playing only one game, say 9/6J Jacks or Better, every time they go to the casino. There’s nothing wrong with learning a new one as long as you know how to play accurately and both the ER (theoretical return) and variance (risk to your bankroll) are acceptable to you. I advise you to stick to just a few so you know the correct strategy. Also it’s a bad idea to play a “new” game with an ER, variance and strategy that are a mystery to you. PAY SCHEDULES One of the most important decisions you will make is whether or not the pay table has a high enough ER for you to play. You will find free removable pay schedules in my book, “The Video Poker Edge,” that you should bring with you. Only you can determine the theoretical return worth your wager, but not knowing the game’s expected results is unwise. Remember that you will get less than the ER over time if you don’t play computer-perfect. FINAL THOUGHTS Some “too cool for school” students called my final exam a multiple guess test since they had five choices, including the detested “none of the above,” and randomly marked their scantron sheets. Those making haphazard guesses fared no better than video poker players who simply play hunches. Although even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then, nobody outruns the odds over time.

BLACKJACK: Debunking the Myths Whenever the conversation turns to blackjack, I seem to always get asked the same questions that have been repeated umpteen times over the past 50 years. These questions are more often than not related to myths that have evolved among players over time about the game of blackjack. If you are a beginner, or even a seasoned blackjack player, I encourage you to read the popular myths that follow and my responses. You may not like what I have to say about them, but they are the facts. MYTH: BAD PLAYERS AT A TABLE WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOSE If that’s true why don’t we pony up some cash, open a casino somewhere and hire a bunch of players (known as shills) that will play blackjack poorly so we can make a killing off the regular players? Of course this is ridiculous, and so is the notion that bad players on your table will cause you to lose more often. Yes, sometimes you will lose a hand or two when a player makes a boneheaded play, but the facts are that the bad play of others will even out your fortunes over time. Sometimes you will win because of a poor playing decision made by your fellow players, and sometimes you will lose. Of course players have selective memory and they only remember the times they lose due to a bad play made by a fellow player. And, to further prove the point that bad plays from fellow players won’t change the odds, a blackjack mathematician ran millions of computer hands where player #1 used the basic strategy to play every hand, whereas several other players were programmed to play “poorly” on every round. The result was the odds of player #1 didn’t change after millions of hands, even though his fellow players were playing poorly. MYTH: A PLAYER AT THIRD BASE SHOULD ALWAYS TAKE THE DEALER’S BUST CARD Many players believe the third base (or anchor) player should play his hand in a manner that will cause the dealer to bust; so all players will win their hands. However, just as in the above myth, it doesn’t make any difference as far as your expectation of winning as to how the third base player plays his hand. In fact, your expectation is not effected one iota by the skill level of other players. So if you happen to have several “ploppies” on your table, you shouldn’t worry about how they misplay their hands. However, if

their “bad” play bothers you, then it’s wise to get up and play elsewhere before you start to make playing mistakes. MYTH: A NEW PLAYER ENTERING A GAME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SHOE SCREWS UP THE ORDER OF THE CARDS Most players dislike it when a new player enters a game in mid-shoe because they believe the order of the cards changes, and this will cause them to lose. It’s true that the order of the cards will change in subsequent rounds, but you can’t predict whether the new order will be better or worse for players. In fact, in the long run, it doesn’t make any difference how many players jump into and out of a shoe; your expectation remains the same. MYTH: ALWAYS INSURE A GOOD HAND Many players will always make the insurance bet when they hold a 20 to guarantee that they won’t lose should the dealer have a blackjack. The insurance bet is a bad bet, but it becomes a worse bet when you hold a 20. The reason is you are betting the dealer has a blackjack when you make the insurance bet, and when you have a 20 you happen to have two of the cards the dealer needs to make blackjack. This makes the odds of the dealer getting a blackjack worse. Overall, the insurance bet is a sucker bet you should always decline regardless of what you hold including a blackjack. MYTH: BETTING PROGRESSIONS CAN OVERCOME THE HOUSE EDGE Just about every blackjack player has, at one time or another, tried using a betting system that is based on increasing your bets depending on whether the previous hand won (or lost). Unfortunately, betting progressions will not change the house edge in the long run. You have a 49 percent chance of winning your next hand (excluding ties) regardless of what happened in the past. Betting progressions might be fun and exciting in the short run, but in the long run they can’t and won’t give you the edge at blackjack. CRAPS: Confessions of a Darkside Player Craps is really two completely different games in one. You have the Rightside (or “do”) game. In this one the players are betting with the shooter and/or are hoping the shooter goes on a tear, hitting number after number and point after point. A lot of money can be made with a hot shooter.

I’d have a load of bets out there and, if the shooter sevened out too soon, I’d take a beating. I mean if you have all the Place bets covered and many of the proposition bets, you are looking for trouble. I found the trouble.”

The second craps game is called the Darkside game. Here the players (or “don’t” players) are betting the seven will defeat the shooter (quickly) as they go in the opposite direction of the “do” players. Rightside players need many and more numbers. Darkside players are looking for the shooter to have a relatively quick seven out.

“I do three bets. The Don’t Pass and two Don’t Come bets with full odds. I usually hold my own which means overall I am down but not excessively so.”

From my experience most Rightside players are not in love with Darkside players. Most Darkside players are usually quiet and sneak in and out of games. They are aware of the dislike that follows their betting patterns.

“Oh, yeah, they hate me. You know why? Because I actually cheer for the seven. I want the shooter to seven out and I call it. I’m not afraid of anyone. I say the heck with them. They cheer when things are going well for them, so I can cheer when things go right for me. The seven is my friend, after the Come-Out roll, that is.”

So I spoke with two inveterate Darkside players to get their handle on the game. “I’ve been a Darksider since my very first game at a craps table,” said Jim DeMonte. “I was of the opinion that playing ‘don’t’ made me one with the house. That I’d have the house’s edge in my favor. I later found out I was wrong, and the house had the edge on me just as it does on the ‘do’ players.” What made Jim stick with the Darkside? I make one bet on the Don’t Pass and one bet on the Don’t Come and that’s it. I find, if the shooter knocks me off my numbers and I don’t go up against him again, then my losses are somewhat contained. I do not bet against a shooter who has hurt me. So how I bet is kind of like my money management system.” Does Jim feel the dislike of the Rightside players? “There are times at the table when I lose that Rightside players will cheer, even if no one won on the number that just hit. Some more aggressive players snicker at me when I lose or clap as they look at me. But when I win everyone tends to get quiet. So, yes, I know I am usually not liked when I play, but this is the way I play and that’s that.” Bernie is a recent convert to Darkside betting. “I decided to go to the Darkside because I was just too darn aggressive when I played the Rightside. 22

So how does an aggressive Bernie bet?

Does Bernie feel the heat from the Rightside players?

What percentage of craps players actually plays the Darkside? My opinion is that it is less than 10 percent, maybe much less. Jim and Bernie had their own ideas. Jim said, “What I have found is when another Darkside player comes to the table and sees me playing the ‘don’t,’ it is not unusual for him to leave and go to another table. I think most Darksiders prefer to be the only one at the table. Less visibility; at least I think they think that.” Bernie said, “I’m thinking less than five percent of players are Darkside players. I don’t count the players who occasionally might play the Darkside. But regular players? Five percent at most.” Bernie added, “I sometimes try to talk to Darkside players at my table, but most of them don’t want to talk. When they hear me cheering for the seven, they tend to make a quick getaway. I sometimes wonder if many Darkside players are a little fearful with the way they bet. It’s our money; we can bet it as we please.” Jim and Bernie play the Darkside in their own ways, at least in terms of decorum. Jim is the quiet type while Bernie is boisterous. Which way is better? Take your pick.

POKER: Stealing Blinds in Limit Hold‘em At some point after the first five or six hours, it’s time to start stealing the blinds from the super tight players who are still alive in the tournament. But be wary of stealing the blinds from the loose players because they will probably defend with skill. Also stay aware of the person who keeps stealing the blinds because at some point you will likely have to make a stand against that player.

“SURVIVING AT THIS POINT IN THE TOURNAMENT IS THE NAME OF THE GAME.”

If you take a close look around your table about six hours into an event, after a while you will develop the ability to see into the future a little bit. For example, there will probably be someone at your table who is playing way too loose, but nonetheless is still alive. You may worry that this player may continue to be lucky, but chances are he will bust himself out sooner rather than later because of his reckless play. There will also be a player at your table whom you will recognize as being very tight and you can figure they will be around late in the tournament, although low on chips. You may even be able to see that the loose player is the one who may be your ticket to lasting another few hours yourself. Six or so hours into the event, with your blind stealing working well, you need to make sure that you’re still in a tight mode of play. Surviving at this point in the tournament is the name of the game. But make sure that you’re stealing blinds from the super tight players. (Don’t worry; you’ll know who they are!) Steal Blinds at the Money-Cutoff Line

When you start to reach the money-cutoff stage (like when you reach 19 players left and the tournament pays top 18 spots), make sure you have your priorities straight. As the other players begin to play even tighter, in order to last into the final 18 players, you need to understand making money isn’t your objective at this point. You are here to finish in the top three and make the big money! One phenomenon you will observe is, when there are perhaps 28 players left in an event paying 27 places, the players will all be playing even more tightly in order to make sure they make the money. This is the time to be sure you’re stealing every blind you can steal! If no one is going to put up a fight, you might as well grab all of the “free money” that you can! So what if you are eliminated in the “stink hole” (often called the bubble)? In other words, so what if you finish 28th in an event paying only 27 spots! Does 27th place change your life at all? If it does, then just do what everyone else does and play super tight. Just be warned that I will be there picking up your blinds every round! This strategy of “steal while they’re in survival mode” has helped me, and many other players, accumulate chips that become important late when I am trying to advance into the final rounds and win the tournament. But you have to be careful with it. Enough players have learned about the strategy of defending the blinds with aggression of their own. Not everyone will go into a shell, so you have to know your players and pick your spots.

BETTING FOOTBALL: Preseason Betting Football season is upon us and with all the variables needed to handicap (coaches, players, rules, etc) always changing, there are numerous betting tips that have stood the test of time. Below you will find some of my personal handicapping concepts that I always look at when breaking down the NFL card. Key Numbers: 3 and 7 are without question the most important numbers in the NFL. The secondary ones to remember are 1, 4, 6, 10, 13, 14, with the distant “key number” relatives being 11 and 17. These are the numbers that have the highest probability of being the margin of victory. About 14% (or 1 in 7) of NFL games land on 3 points. It is also important to avoid some traps that people fall into, such as taking a +7.5 -110 underdog on an alternate line at +9 1/2 points but being forced to lay big juice. Games rarely end in an 8 or 9 point victory, so there really isn’t much difference in the two points from 7 1/2 to 9 1/2 points, so be careful not to let the juicier numbers with the high premium tempt you. Anti-Public: Blanket fading the public will do nothing but make you broke unless you are the one booking the action. Here is why: -110=4.5%. Vegas hopes to hold 4.5% of every single dollar wagered by their players based of the -110 they charge on losers. Let me paint the picture another way: Bears -7 (75% public)/Lions +7. Lions lose by 3 and the public loses, but (and a big but) the book collects at +110 profit while you are only getting +100. By taking the side of the book you do so by giving up the almighty -110 that in the end allows them to have an edge over the player. Say the opposite happens and the Bears destroy the Lions. The book pays out at even money while you are paying your loss with an extra 10% tacked on. It may not seem like much, but over the course of a full season of you paying at -110 on losing bets and not -100, the money will start to add up. Underdogs on Monday Night Football: At one time in sports betting, this was the “golden goose” public betting trend. The trend slowly went south and in 2007 close to 70% of the road favorites beat the number. If there is an edge or flaw in the lines, due to the money involved, the gambling gods will eventually even out their universe. From the 1970’s to around 2000, following the dog on Monday you would have hit close to 60%. Over the past ten years or so it is a coin flip at best. 24

Betting Teasers: Based of a -110 vig, a sports bettor will need to hit around 52.4% of their wagers to break even. Using the standard 6-point teaser as our example, each individual teaser side would now need to cover 72.5% to break even. Essentially, those extra 6-points need to boost your win percent an additional 20% to make a teaser worth playing. The first thing is toss out using a total. Even though some may disagree, there is no total worth moving 6 points that will boost your win percentage 20%. Sure a dog to the under or favorite to the over has some correlation concepts, but we are trying to keep it simple in this example. Some basic tips to follow when betting six point teasers in the NFL: favorites of 7.5-8.5 down to 1.5 - 2.5, thus crossing both 3 and 7. Also, move the underdogs of 1.52.5 up to 7.5-8.5, thus moving cross 3 and 7. Parlay Cards: On average, the house edge in Baccarat is 1.06%. Blackjack when playing perfect strategy is around 0.50%. The average street books pays 9-1 on a 4 team parlay card, which results in about a 46% house edge. Even with the best odds offshore at 12-1, the house edge is still 29%, which equals the odds paid out on Keno. The actual odds on a 4-team parlay are 15-1, which leaves the house with only an 11% edge or around the house edge for prop bets at the craps table. The more teams the player picks the higher the payouts are, which entices the junkie in all of us. The house edge actually goes higher and higher with each team you add on, but we tend to be blinded with the increasing payout odds. Hit a nice 8 teamer and get back 100-1, but even at 100-1 the house is still keeping a 65% edge on the player. One Vegas book pays out 200,000-1 on a 20 teamer. House edge? 80.93%. The majority of people who plan to bet the NFL this season are doing it to have a little fun while watching the games. So despite all the information I have shared above, my best advice is to put aside a bankroll for football season and stick within your means. Never think you are due to win or “chase” your way into getting into money trouble. Unless you plan to become a professional sports handicapper, if you can get 16+ weeks of enjoyment for little or no cost, I would call that a great bet!

The national spotlight does not shine on the “Sport of Kings” again until the next February when the Kentucky Derby Prep Races begin. This doesn’t mean the serious horseplayer has an extended furlough to do nothing except enhance their social networking skills. History’s supreme runners share the common thread of a successful two-year old campaign. Therefore if one dreams of being the first to spot the next Secretariat, they had better be on the alert from dusk until dawn. I give fair warning that the predictability of two year old thoroughbred racing in a best case scenario rates as “murky”. In this genre of the game, horses who were nestled in their mama’s belly twenty-four months ago now suddenly find their resolve being tested in the final furlong of a grueling route of ground. A few prior races, some scattered workouts and the beast’s bloodlines will be the only tools at a handicapper’s disposal guiding the selection process. These contests usually better serve owners and trainers in gauging the raw talent in their barns than the player trying to fatten their bottom line. Even though I discourage a large investment on any equine sophomore, analysis of their deeds is where the savvy horseplayer gains an advantage on their peers. Two year old racing reaches its summit in the Grade I-Juvenile Division at Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. The equine that emerges victorious from this mile and one sixteenth contest with a purse of $2 million dollars instantly earns the label of “Early Kentucky Derby Favorite”. A triad of two year old stakes races that lead up to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile further compile the list of applicants who seek immortality in the next calendar year. The Hopeful Stakes, Belmont Futurity Stakes and Champagne Stakes traditionally make a powerful argument towards who will be in the running to inherit the three year old crown of thoroughbred racing. The Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes held at Saratoga Racecourse was inaugurated in 1904 and is the first Grade I race of the year for two year olds. In 2009, the seven furlong Hopeful featured 32

twelve entries and gave four time Kentucky Derby winning trainer D. Wayne Lucas a dose of merited optimism for the 2010 racing season. His entry Dublin, went to post as a lukewarm 3-1 favorite but rewarded his backers with a two length victory. It seems the sky is the limit for this young superstar whose sire (Afleet Alex) captured the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in 2005. The Belmont Futurity Stakes came into existence in 1888 and has no shortage of nobility in the ranks of its past champions. Affirmed who captured the last Triple Crown in 1978 along with Secretariat, Citation and Man O War all have a victory in the Belmont Futurity etched on their resume. In the 2009 edition, the heavily favored D’ Funnybone scampered away to a 4 ¾ length victory and gave every indication that he will be a major player on next spring’s Triple Crown trail. Handling the conditioning of D’Funnybone is the brash trainer Rick Dutrow who saddled Big Brown to a Kentucky Derby win in 2008. Even though the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile offers more in the way of purse monies, there can be little argument that the Grade I Champagne Stakes held at Belmont Park ranks as the most historically significant two year old race in the country. Triple Crown Champions Count Fleet and Seattle Slew along with ten other runners whose names litter the Horse Racing Hall of Fame have popped the cork and toasted their success with a sip of this bubbly. The one mile race inaugurated in 1867 will be renewed on October 10th , and to this day remains an accurate barometer of two year old horseflesh. The 2009 Kentucky Derby Champion Mine That Bird was sired by Birdstone, who was the 2003 Champagne Stakes Champion. A factual parallel can be drawn between the chances of finding a future NFL quarterback at a high school varsity football game, and locating the next equine to wear the roses out of a two year old stakes race. An infinite amount of factors can propel or detract a runner from the Triple Crown Trail but know this: A mental note on a promising racehorse in early November could possibly lead to the biggest score of your life on the first Saturday in May!
