MVP-candidate form, and the Eagles could return to Super Bowl form.

Last Season: 9-7 This Season Prediction: 12-4

he Eagles used their irst three draft picks on the ofensive side of the ball, selecting OT Andre Dillard, RB Miles Sanders, and WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside. he return of WR DeSean Jackson, along with new addition RB Jordan Howard, will also help bolster an offense with an elite ofensive line and the best tight end duo in the league in Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert. Defensively, the Eagles are worryingly thin at linebacker but will rely on the strength and depth of their defensive line, as they did during their championship run two years ago.

With Nick Foles gone, the Eagles now have no safety net for franchise quarterback Carson Wentz. Availability has been the biggest issue for Wentz, who will be entering his fourth NFL season with plenty of ofensive irepower.

Ultimately, the Eagles will go as Wentz goes. To this point in the ofseason, the news has been all positive for Wentz. He has been practicing with no limitations and without a knee brace. If he can stay on the ield, he could return to his 2017

Bill Belichick and Tom Brady will enter their 20th season together looking to defend yet another Super Bowl championship. Until the legendary duo is broken up, the Patriots cannot be counted out as a contender. his coming season will present a few diferent challenges

s mandatory minicamps open and a new NFL season can be seen on the horizon, we are excited to bring you a our insight on a few teams who are bound to make some noise this year, a few that will come up short, and a little fantasy insight along the way.

Fantasy Spotlight: QB Carson Wentz- Wentz currently sits around the 10-spot among QB’s but he should be snatched up well before this point. If he is healthy, look for him to be a bona ide QB1 every week. Expect Wentz to air it out this year.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS Last Season: 11-5 This Season Prediction: 13-3

for them, however. Signiicant coaching changes have taken place since last season including the departure of linebacker coach and defensive play caller Brian Flores, who has been hired as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots looked to Greg Schiano to ill the void before he abruptly resigned only two months after being hired. All signs now point to Belichick assuming the role of defensive play caller, as he has done with mixed results, in the past. Losing irreplaceable talent such as TE Rob Gronkowski (retirement) and DE Trey Flowers (free agency) will be even more of an adjustment for New England. he Patriots released free agency signing TE Austin Sefarian-Jenkins while the current starting tight end, Benjamin Watson, is facing a four-game suspension for banned substances. Pats fans may have their ingers crossed in hopes that Gronk comes out of retirement and crashes the party at some point. here have been a few playmakers added to the roster, however, in WR Demaryius Thomas and DL Michael Bennett, among others. Despite all of the roster and staf turnover, New England draws the second-easiest schedule in the NFL and will continue to feast on the AFC East, as they have for decades now. So long as Tom Brady continues to defy nature, the Patriots could be sitting pretty with a high seed in the AFC.

Fantasy Spotlight : WR Julian Edelman - he Patriots have extended Edelman for two years and with Gronk and Chris Hogan gone, Edelman remains as Brady’s most reliable target. He has been a PPR machine throughout his career and he should only get more targets this year.

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS Underachievers Last Season: 12-4

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

This Season Prediction: 13-3

Last Season: 12-4

he Chargers may very well be the most balanced team in the NFL. Leading the NFL with 7 players named to last year’s Pro Bowl, the Chargers look to take the next step after falling to the Patriots in the divisional round of last year’s playofs. Phillip Rivers has had a Hall of Famecaliber career but still seeks his irst Super Bowl ring. With a strong supporting cast around him, the Chargers will play their final season at Dignity Health Sports Park before leaving for their new facility in Inglewood next year. hey will host Kansas City in a Monday night game at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and inish the regular season at Kansas City, in what will likely be a crucial divisional matchup. he Chargers inally snapped their 9-game losing streak against the Chiefs back in December, and they will need to build on that to take the AFC West crown.

This Season Prediction: 10-6

he clock is ticking on Rivers’ career and it is oicially Super Bowl or bust time. With a star-studded roster, this could be the team that inally wins it all.

Fantasy Spotlight: TE Hunter Henry will look to pick up where he left of prior to tearing his ACL over a year ago. His knee healed enough for him to return to play in the divisional round of the playofs last season, so an entire ofseason should help him fully recover. Henry was highly efective per target in 2017 and, if he is healthy, he should outperform is current ADP by far.

A year after quarterback Patrick Mahomes set the NFL world on ire, the Chiefs will have a diferent look to them this season. While there is no denying Mahomes’ absurd playmaking ability, the NFL’s top ofense is facing quite a bit of uncertainty due to of-the-ield issues. Already having released young star running back Kareem Hunt last year, the Chiefs have now suspended explosive receiver Tyreek Hill indefinitely, due to a domestic abuse investigation. he Chiefs and the NFL await the outcome of this investigation to determine the penalty, if any, for Hill. Hill’s role in the ofense can not be overstated, and he if he were to miss any time, the Chiefs will need to adjust signiicantly. On top of that, defense was a huge liability for Kansas City last season, and it could get worse. New defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will be transitioning the defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3 base scheme. In the process, they have released LB Justin Houston and traded away LB Dee Ford, two of their biggest playmakers last season. he acquisition of pass rusher Frank Clark and safety Tyrann Mathieu will certainly help fill some holes but expect growing pains for this Chiefs defense. While not a catastrophic collapse, the Chiefs could take a step back in 2019 but still make playofs. he ofense will once again have to shoulder the load and carry this team as far as it can go. Come playof time, that is not an ideal situation.

Fantasy Spotlight: TE Travis Kelce – Assuming Kelce is a full-go by the time training camp starts, after his ofseason ankle surgery, there is no reason to believe he won’t be the most productive tight end in 2019. He will cost a pretty penny as far as draft price, even the back end of the irst round, but with Tyreek Hill’s possible absence, Kelce could be a league-winner.

This Season Prediction: 9-7 Reigning Coach of the Year Matt Nagy and the Chicago Bears inished with a 12-4 record last season as the Bears took the NFL by surprise. All-Pro linebacker Khalil Mack led a stiling defense that helped secure a division title. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has since left the Bears for the head coaching position in Denver. his could be a setback for the strength of the team, as the Bears look to repeat as NFC North champions in what should be a tight divisional race. Outside of the division, the Bears have a tough schedule, 5th toughest in opponent win percentage. QB Mitchell Trubisky enters a critical third season showing promise, but it still remains to be seen if he can be the franchise guy. he departure of running back Jordan Howard will put more pressure on Trubisky as well. he Bears should ind themselves in the mix, but they won’t be sneaking up on any teams this year. If Trubisky can take a step forward in his development and become a consistent passer, it could take Chicago far, but it is tough to tell if he is capable at this point.

Fantasy Spotlight: RB Tarik Cohen – he backield around Tarik Cohen has shifted with Jordan Howard’s departure, putting Cohen into more of a leadership role at only 23 years old. Cohen is a dynamic talent who will get the ball one way or another and put up lofty allpurpose yards. He can be drafted as an RB2 with upside. 12

| G A M I N G A N D D E S T I N AT I O N S . C O M

RB1: Leonard Fournette (3rd Rd) – Fournette sufered as a result of a bangedup offensive line last year but should bounce back this season. He is a rare workhorse back.

RB2: Sony Michel (5th Rd) – New England RB’s are always tricky but Michel should be given the lion’s share of carries.

WR1: DeAndre Hopkins (1st Rd) - Last year’s top receiver, Hopkins shows no signs of slowing down.

WR2: Brandin Cooks (4th Rd) – Cooks boom/bust factor stops him from being a WR1 but he will light up the scoreboard on a boom week.

(7th Rd) – Cohen should have a more consistent role in Chicago’s ofense this year. If he is lingering in the middle rounds of the draft, pick him up for his upside.

DEF: L.A. Rams – Chicago will likely be the irst defense of the board, the Rams can be taken afterwards and can be relied upon every week.

One modern-day female sports journalist who seems to be on top of the world is Bonnie Bernstein. From the beginning, Bernstein blazed her own path in journalism when she kicked of her television career at WMDT-TV (ABC) in Salisbury, MD, anchoring weekend news, and then broke into broadcasting in radio as the News and Sports Director for WXJN-FM in Lewes, DE. In 1993, Bernstein made local television history at KRNV-TV in Reno, NV (NBC), as the “Biggest Little City’s” irst-ever female weekday sports anchor and has never looked back. Since then, she’s covered some of the world’s biggest sports events for ESPN and CBS and recently launched her own company, Walk Swiftly Productions. 14

We recently caught up with Bernstein to talk about the state of the sports industry, her career, and even a little gambling. Gaming and Destinations: When did you know you wanted to be in broadcast journalism? Bonnie Bernstein: When I was 12 or 13, I decided I wanted to write for Sports Illustrated, but it wasn’t until my irst broadcast class when I was a sophomore at the University of Maryland, that I really got the TV bug. I loved the creative and collaborative process of it all! G&D: What sports did you play when you were young, and did your passion for playing sports translate into your passion to cover them? BB: I have always loved sports and played soccer, gymnastics, track and ield and a little bit of softball. I loved them all, but ultimately, focused on gymnastics, which enabled me to earn a scholarship at Maryland. As for my passion for covering sports, I think I have always felt connected having experience of competition. I’ve always felt having that irsthand knowledge of what it takes to prepare mentally and physically for competition at a high level has enabled me to understand the mindset of athletes. I’d like to think

one of the by-products of that is informed questions that inspire insightful answers. G&D: How do you prepare for a broadcast or interview? BB: My process for prepping for games when I was on the sidelines was probably a lot more extensive than you’d imagine. I would read all of the local and national articles I could get my hands on, interview as many coaches and players as possible and prepare a whole pad full of stats and storylines just to try to be as prepared and informed as possible. hen once the game started, it was critical to keep an eye on what was going on in the bench area. I would also have a whole logging system that enabled me to easily identify trends in a game to be ready for anything. My goal was to provide insight to the viewer that they wouldn’t necessarily get by simply watching the broadcast. G&D:What has been the toughest interview or question you have ever asked? And how did it end up? BB: I’d say the toughest question was probably to Roy Williams after Kansas lost the 2003 National Basketball Championship to Syracuse. He was the Jayhawks head coach at the time, but the entire tournament, there was speculation

around whether he’d be the next coach at his alma mater, UNC. I knew that I had a postgame interview with him, and in those situations, I always ask myself, “What would fans want to know?” So, in that situation, I felt that the fans would want his relections on the season and how it ended that evening, but also what the future held for him. he result? Well… look it up on YouTube! (Search Bonnie Bernstein Roy Williams) G&D: What are some of the most diicult things about covering sports? BB: “Diicult” is relative. I look at being a irst responder, a medical professional or someone in the military as being diicult. I look at a single mom working three jobs to keep the lights on for her kids to be diicult. I talk about sports for a living. And now, with my production company, I create content about sports. Yes, sometimes it can be a grind, and you’re dealing with deadlines and traveling, and sleep deprived. But at the end of the day… it’s still sports. G&D: What is to best thing about covering sports and what are some of your favorite career moments? BB: he best thing about covering sports is the fact that I get to wake up every day and do something I love. To me, I have probably had four most memorable

Basketball Championship. here’s just nothing like being a broadcaster when your alma mater wins a national title. Especially after all the program’s struggles in the aftermath of Len Bias’ death and NCAA sanctions. he third would be being on the sideline of the Army-Navy game, three months after 9/11. It was extraordinarily emotional. I don’t think I’ve ever been so proud to be an American, being able to interview some of the young men who would one day be protecting our freedom, along with President Bush, General Norman Schwarzkopf and West Point Heisman winner, Glenn Davis. And the inal moment was most recently, when ESPN bought a documentary series this year called GOOD GAME that I created through my company, Walk Swiftly Productions. It’s been really special to relect back on ESPN hiring me as a reporter when I was 24 years old, then to fast forward and experience working with them today as an entrepreneur. G&D: Women in sports broadcasting have come a long way over the years. Do you consider yourself a pioneer of sorts in laying the tracks for more female sports broadcasters? BB: I don’t think it’s my place to categorize, but I learned very early on in my network career the importance of us all doing our part to create a welcoming environment and support system for women in our industry. My role model, colleague and friend Lesley Visser (who truly is a pioneer in our industry!) taught me that and passed the “sisterhood” baton on to me. hat’s a responsibility I take very seriously. I love mentoring and coaching women, and hopefully providing helpful insight and advice based on my own experiences. G&D: What are your thoughts on the expansion of sports gambling throughout the country, and do you think it will increase viewership?

moments in my career. My irst Super Bowl broadcast for CBS (SB XXXV) might top the list. It was Giants-Ravens in Tampa in 2001 and I was assigned to the Giants sideline and they were my hometown team, so I was excited, it was a dream come true even though Baltimore annihilated them. he second was having the opportunity to cover every single game during Maryland’s run to the 2002 Men’s

BB: It’s here. It’s not going away. It’s going to generate billions. And everyone in the content world is scrambling to igure out the right formula to capitalize on it. I’m not sure it creates a huge jump in viewership as much as it may keep folks in our short attention-span society glued to games a little longer, too see if their bets pan out.

VIDEO POKER: Honing Your Skills A few years ago my friend Steve Bourie, publisher of American Casino Guide, said he and his son were going to Las Vegas and he wanted to brush up on his playing skills before leaving. Steve is a knowledgeable video poker (VP) player so you may wonder why he was still practicing. It’s because he’s a smart gambler and knows there are anomalies in every game and if you want to make few or no errors you’ll continue to practice, especially if you haven’t played the game in a while. For those who have used tutorial software and just want to hone their skills I suggest you use the “Hard Hand” mode on Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker software. (If you are a beginner then you should absolutely practice on tutorial software, but use the warn, test or show mode instead.) In this column, I will highlight a few ways for you to hone your skills. Software: First you must make sure your software is tutorial in nature and not just mindless practice. For example, some say they know how to play the game because they practice at home for free. If it’s not tutorial, then it may be lots of fun but also a waste of time. Whistles and bells are ine on VP software and tutorial software will enable you to change the colors on suits, make coin sounds and change the backs of cards, but the most important thing is to learn the mathematically correct holds. Be aware that you’re not a psychic so anything can happen in the short run but your smartest holds are to go with the odds. Practice: It is imperative that you set your pay schedule to be the same as the game you are playing before you begin your practice session. For WinPoker you go to Options, then Change Pay Tables and make sure it’s an exact match to the game you’ll be playing in the casino. Next, you should go to Analyze and then Run Analysis so you can see the expected return (ER) of the game you’ll be playing. After you learn the ER (this assumes computer-perfect play) you may change your mind about playing. Now you’re ready to begin your practice session. Training Modes: I was a high school math teacher years ago and know that people learn in diferent ways. hat’s why I like the fact you can play around on your software until you ind the mode 20

that best suits your learning style. For example, WinPoker ofers several self-explanatory options: Warn, Test, Show or None. You can also access data indicating how well you’re doing and reset the data to zero if you’re frustrated over your low accuracy percentage and want to start again. Advanced: If you’re an experienced player and have spent lots of time practicing on your tutorial software, then you’ll want to focus on advanced skills since there are anomalies in VP games, some involving penalty cards and some the condition of the remaining deck. (Both concepts are explained in detail in my book, “he Video Poker Edge” available through Square One Publishers, Amazon or any major bookstore.) Hard Hands: his is an excellent mode for an experienced player. Just as you’d expect the hands dealt will be tricky and include unexpected holds. Make sure you pause and analyze the reason you made a mistake when you do. Trying to memorize video poker hands is an exercise in futility because there are too many possibilities. You will want to remember the “whys” for the correct holds rather than the exact hand. Error Log: I really like this mode when I want to make sure I’ve learned from my past mistakes. It’s a conidence builder when you go to this learning tool after a lapse of time and discover that you’ve corrected game errors you used to make. Final houghts: here are 2,598,960 possible hand combos, given a virtual 52-card deck. In addition, every time there is a change in the pay schedule, say 9/5 JOB (Jacks or Better) instead of 9/6JOB, it changes the correct holds, although the game’s basic strategy may be almost the same. he more changes in the pay schedule the greater the probability the correct holds will change. In addition, computer correct holds will change from the core game when you play a progressive version as the progressive jackpots grow, especially for Royal Flush holds. I hope this helps you hone your video poker skills and makes for a winning session on your next casino visit!

Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, writes for Southern & Midwest Gaming and Destinations, Arizona Player and other media outlets. You can also see her videos on YouTube or her radio interviews are on iTunes. Boyd’s book, “The Video Poker Edge”, and includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. The latest edition is available from amazon.com, Square One Publishers and book stores. Kindle edition now available.

BLACKJACK: Playing 16…the right way One of the most frustrating hands in blackjack is a 16 against a dealer’s 10 upcard. How you play this hand depends upon the composition of the cards that make up your 16 and the playing rules. Here are some examples of diferent hands that total 16, and how you should play them against a dealer’s 10 upcard.

Henry Tamburin is a blackjack and video poker expert. For a free copy of his Casino Gambling Catalog containing books, strategy cards, DVDs, and software for blackjack, video poker, and other casino games, call toll free 1-888-353-3234 (or view the catalog online at www. smartgaming.com). “IF YOU WAGERED $25 AND WERE DEALT A 10-6 AGAINST A DEALER 10, YOUR EXPECTED TO LOSE $12.50 IF YOU SURRENDERED. IF YOU STOOD INSTEAD, YOU CAN EXPECT TO LOSE $13.53.”

FOR MORE FREE TIPS, VISIT GAMINGANDDESTINATIONS.COM

How you play this hand depends on the rules. If the casino allows you to surrender your hand, you should surrender the 10-6 against a dealer’s 10 over hitting or standing. (he surrender rule means you can forfeit playing your hand and automatically lose half your wager.) You lose 50% of your wager when you surrender; however, you would lose greater than 50%, on average, if you were to hit or stand, which is why surrender is the better play. If the casino rules do not allow surrender, then you should always hit a two-card 16, like 10-6. For skeptics that don’t believe surrender is better than hitting (which in turn is better than standing), look at the data in the following table. It shows the expectation (in percent) of surrendering, standing, and hitting a 10-6 against a 10 in a 6-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17. Surrendering

-50.0%

Standing

-54.1%

Hitting

-53.5%

For example, if you wagered $25 and were dealt a 10-6 against a dealer 10, your expectation is to lose exactly $12.50 if you surrendered (i.e., 50% of your initial wager). If you stood instead, you can expect to lose $13.53 on average ($25 times -54.1%). he amount you will lose on average when you hit is $13.38 ($25 times -53.5%). herefore, the math says that you will lose money in the long run no matter how you play the hand but you’ll lose less if you surrender (followed by hitting).

his hard 16 hand consists of three cards (4-8-4). When you hold a multi-card 16, the best strategy is to stand. he reason standing is slightly better than hitting, is because you’ve removed two small cards from the decks (the two 4s in your hand), making it more likely you would break if you hit. he percentages are close between standing and hitting, but the slight edge is in favor of standing. (You can’t surrender this hand because you can only surrender your initial two-card hand. Once you draw a third card, the surrender option is no longer available.)

his 16 consists of a pair of 8s, which brings into play the option of splitting. Your choice is, therefore, to surrender, hit, stand, or split. First of, you should never surrender a pair of 8s so let’s rule out that option. Your best play is to split the 8s. I realize that many players do not like to split 8s against a strong dealer’s upcard like 10. However, the reality of this hand is this: Starting with two hands of 8 is better than starting with one hand of 16. You will lose less money in the long run when you split the 8s then if you stood or hit with 16. Yes, sometimes you will split the 8s, draw 10s to each split 8 for two pat 18s, and lose to a dealer 20. (Been there, done that.) However, in the long run, you will lose less money by splitting vs. standing or hitting.

his 16 is a soft 16, consisting of an ace counted as 11. You should never stand on a soft 16 because you can’t bust with a one-card draw. he correct way to play this hand against a dealer’s 10 is to hit. Is there ever any situation where you wouldn’t follow the above basic playing strategy for 16 against a 10? he answer is, yes, when you play in a blackjack tournament.
