From donating funds to sponsoring events, casinos actively engage in their communities, addressing diverse needs like education, healthcare, and social services. North Star Mohican Casino Resort Bowler, Wisconsin 2023 Habitat for Humanity Golf Outing Raises Almost $24,000 In addition to many other organizations throughout the year, North Star Mohican Casino Resort’s 25th annual golf outing raised nearly $24,000 last year for the Wolf River Habitat for Humanity and its vision to build strength, stability, and self-reliance for families in Shawano and Menominee counties. The outing took place at Pine Hills
Golf Course in Gresham, Wisconsin last August and continued to be a huge success and major fundraiser for the group. “We are pleased to be hosting the 25th annual Habitat for Humanity Golf Outing at Pine Hills. North Star Mohican Casino’s hosting of the Habitat for Humanity Golf Outing exemplifies our dedication to giving back to the community and supporting important causes” said Tony Granquist, North Star Mohican Casino Resorts General Manager. “Through this partnership, both organizations were able to make a positive impact and raise funds for affordable housing initiatives.” Local fundraising events are the only financial support that Wolf River Habitat obtains, as it does not receive any monies from the national organization. This year’s event, with the help of North Star Mohican Casino Resort team members, Habitat for Humanity volunteers and numerous companies donating raised approximately $24,000.

Some of the recent groups they have worked with are the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Point Cadet, the Gulf Coast Heart Walk, Out of the Darkness Community Walk on the MS Gulf Coast, Pet’s Sake Rescue in Long Beach, MS with a linen donation, items (diapers, water, sundries, etc.) collected and donated by team members to the victims of the recent tornadoes in the city of Winona, Mississippi, the donation of 1,000 pounds of spaghetti to the City of D’Iberville to aid the March of Mayors Food Drive and Extra Table, that will benefit their partner food pantries across the Gulf Coast and a donation to the Midway Missionary Baptist Church & Health Ministry of Midway MBC disaster relief for the town of Selma after tornados hit Alabama and Georgia. Ms. Debbie, the Hotel Housekeeping supervisor, was instrumental in facilitating this donation to give cases of shampoo, conditioner, bath gel and 256 cases of bottled water.

Southland Casino Hotel West Memphis, Arkansas Southland Casino Hotel has grown their property from a regional greyhound track to a lavish casino resort featuring a luxurious hotel with fine dining, a great casino and more. In addition to growing their gaming footprint, they have also continued to excel with their charitable efforts as well. Last July, the property was able to give a check for $20,637 to the Special Olympics Greater Memphis. Through training and competitions in Olympic-style sports, the Special Olympics Greater Memphis’s nonprofit organization spreads the message that people with intellectual disabilities can and will succeed when given the opportunity. The campaign is part of parent company Delaware North’s “Game Changer” initiative across its gaming properties in the United States, with the goal of making a positive change in those local communities. Guests are encouraged to be a part of their efforts by dropping off items at the property and gifting the change that’s left on a slot voucher at wishing wells, located throughout the casino floor. “We have a deep appreciation for the work that the Special Olympics Greater

Challenges and Future Directions While the casino industry’s commitment to philanthropy is undeniable, it still faces certain challenges. Public perception of the industry can sometimes hinder its philanthropic efforts as the perception doesn’t necessarily reflect the reality of the impact that is provided to so many organizations and causes year-round. Time - A Reality Check
Seeing how it is the dawn of a new year, I thought this might be the ideal moment to step back and offer some perspective apropos to something that all horseplayers have in common. With that said, you’ve probably predicted that you are about to ingest an editorial relating to how you can procure a wheel barrel full of cash by playing the ponies. On the contrary, the following paragraphs pertain to a theme that is far more important than any picture of some long dead United States President. Other than (obviously) money, the only thing that everyone at the racetrack universally cares about is time. That’s because the very nature of horseracing dictates that we must be utterly obsessed with this man-made measuring stick. Don’t believe me? Well, the next time you frequent your favorite oval, count how often you hear phrases anent to: How many minutes are left until post-time? What time does the feature run today? My horse missed the break and couldn’t “get up” in time. This is my first time visiting this track. What running time did that horse get in his previous race? I am using a new handicapping angle this time around. That jockey didn’t time his move right. I couldn’t get my bet down in time and got shut out. Get the idea yet? Before we get down to the nitty-gritty of this column, an accompanying argument I want to make is that our lifelong pilgrimage as horseplayers can be viewed in just one of two ways. In the short term (which is the plane most players exist on), life begins the moment we make a bet and then ends in that flash where the field crosses the finish line. Win or lose, the end of said wager represents our death. We are then “reborn” the next time we secure “action” on a race. However, if one lends concentration to the longterm view, there is the insight that time is always running out on life itself. See, there are only a finite number of races that make up a punter’s career and once a contest has been declared official, you can’t get it back. (That’s why it stings like the dickens when you make the same mistake twice.) Correspondingly, all of us will eventually figure out (probably in the twilight of our lives) that the cumulative time we’ve spent investing in the races only adds up to one thing. photo book full of memories and nothing more. You see, whether they are good or bad, memories of bygone races are all that we horse players truly possess. Hence, my main point is that while we all want to win, money itself constantly comes and goes. If not absorbed into the pari-mutual pools of a forthcoming race, then it is simply spent on necessities or something akin to, “wine, women and song”. I promise you, even if you hit the Rainbow Pick 6 at Gulfstream Park and then the Kentucky Derby’s “Super High Five” wager a week later, you’ll only end up marrying a mansion that will one day become someone else’s inheritance. Consequent to digesting this heap enigmatic philosophy, you might ask, “Well then, as horse players, what are we ultimately chasing?” Nevertheless, if you are in the game solely to pursue financial gain then it is imperative that you reevaluate. Why? Well, because no amount of money will ever be enough.

Truth be told, I spent most of my twenties
gambling on the flats inside the (now defunct) Orlando, Florida Jai-alai Fronton and Race Book. Back then, all I cared about was money. I was the type who would literally step over someone who was having a heart attack so I wouldn’t get shut out. Over the course of a few memorable months though, that all changed. I began taking notice of an older silver-haired man who would stroll into the race book around 10:00 PM. He had a sense of impassiveness about him, never being in a rish and seemed to own a perpetual expression that he would rather be elsewhere. He had learned how to let the game come to him. This gentleman is the only horse player I ever met who has truly won. He beat the game because he played it on his terms and when his time dictated. I am sure I will never see this fellow again but to say that he made an indelible impression on me is an understatement. All told, if I could only share one axiom with Horse Racing Nation for all of eternity it would be, “Make sure you own the game and it’s not the other way around.” Do this, and I promise that your days of dabbling inside the “Sport of Kings” will be time well spent!
