WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER

Knee Breezers… Unite!

The 2018 season of riding is well underway and the motorcycles are once again, on the minds of most everyone. Events are springing up all over, motorcycle retail outlets and dealerships are beginning to hear their cash registers “Ka-ching” and folks are beginning to enjoy the sunshine, the short sleeves and their knees in the breeze.

Meaningful benefits will be occurring for many, many good charities, children and folks in need. Included in that scenario are riders that go down or are involved in accidents. Please, please watch out for yourselves and others on two-wheels. Motorists who do not pay close attention may not be aware you are there due to, being hurried, texting, talking or just plan not paying attention. DRIVE DEFENSIVE this year. Sons of Speed Vintage Racing of Days Gone By By Liz Cunningham

V

intage Racing at its finest; that’s what I saw at the New Smyrna Race Track during the 78th Daytona Bike Week. Billy Lane of Choppers Inc. is in his second year hosting this vintage motorcycle race. The three classes consisted of Stock 45’s, Stock 61’s and Hot 61’s that have been “souped-up” to go faster than originally intended.

shoulder blade, torn rotator cuff and a collapsed lung. All of the racers signed a get well card at the track and at this writing, Josh is recuperating at a friend’s home in Daytona Beach. Southern Biker Magazine wishes him a speedy recovery and looking forward to see him for the season of Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners.

The actual speeds aren’t as fast as new race bikes, but the sounds of yesteryear motorcycle engines and seeing them race around the track was more than just exciting for me. This was my first time seeing this type motorcycle race and the first meeting with Billy Lane. What a racer he is and great person to talk with face to face.

The race was friendly between racers and teams, but you can sense thatt most everyone wanted to win. Competition makes everyone sit down on that seat a little lower and twist that throttle a little more. Winners of the heats and final races were: 45’s Heat #1-Go Takamine, #2-Doug Young; 61’s Heat #1-Ken Curtis, #2-Mark Hanna; Hot 61’s Heat #1-Jody Perewitz, #2Matt Walkser; Bonus Heat – Xavier Muriel; Final 45’s Champion – Doug Young, Finals 61’s Champion – Kevin Clark, Finals 61’s Hot Champion – Matt Walkser.

Back to the track, I was there to see all of the action in practice and during the races. Talking with a real life moonshiner and racer, Crazy Chuck Kichton who came in second in his heat race, left me with laughing one minute and admiration the next. Speaking of moonshiners, during one of the practice heats, TV’s Moonshiner Josh Owens had a bad crash in practice on his vintage 1919 Harley-Davidson when it blew a tire. He was rushed to Halifax Hospital where he was treated for a broken nose, broken ribs, broken 8 - Southern Biker Magazine

It was everything I had hoped for and more. Close-to-the-racing action and meeting so many great people in the industry including Billy Lane; I can’t wait for next year’s event. Make sure you put this down on your to-do list for the 78th Daytona Bike Week. You won’t be disappointed. May 2018

Valerie Thompson Survives 343mph Crash During Speed Record Assault By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

E

ight-time land speed record holder, Valerie Thompson, survived a very high speed crash in Australia at Gairdner during the Dry Lakes Racers Australia Speedweek and World Speed Trials. She was attempting for the overall speed record of 376mph in the Seven Motorcycle Streamliner when something went terribly wrong.

Thompson’s “Bub 7” motorcycle’s rear end seemed to lift off the ground right before the rear chutes deployed. It then tossed over on its side and skidded for nearly a mile. Luckily with the deployment of the chutes, the motorcycle kept onto its side, dug a red trence into the salt flats in a straight line, avoiding the tumbling action a crash at this high speed usually has. Thompson walked away from the accident and told Fox News that she was fine on her way back to Scottsdale, Arizona where she’ll go over the data and inbike video to try to determine what happened. Aside from a few bumps and cuts, Thompson thinks she got through it 10 - Southern Biker Magazine

unscathed, but was to get checked for a concussion when she arrived home. She said, “I told my husband, if I start getting strangely sweet on you, you’ll know something’s wrong!” Even though her world record attempt ended in a crash, her earlier trial attempts garnered her a speed of 328mph, beating her old women’s world record of 304mph. The current 376mph motorcycle speed record is held by Rocky Robinson at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA. If Thompson had managed to break the world record, it would have been the first time since 1955 that the record was made somewhere besides Bonneville. From Valerie: “Our trip to Australia had a wonderful beginning and a rather tragic end. We set a new record of 328.467 mph during the DRLA Speed Week event and became a new member in their 200 & 300 MPH Clubs, only the second person to enter the 300 MPH Club in Australia. I also earned the “Fast Lady on the Lake” award given by the Dry Lake Racers Australia. Unfortunately I crashed at over 343mph, but thanks to the superior design and safety features incorporated in the bike by Denis Manning, John Jans and team, I (am able) to be sending this message now…” Will she break the world record? Only time will tell. Next up… Bonneville. May 2018

Don’t Settle Did you ever have that pair of shoes that look great but every time you go to put them on, you know your feet are going to hurt so you pass them by for shoes that fit and feel comfortable. What about that relationship that has some good qualities but you still know you’re settling? You know they never work out in the long run. How about that bra that’s beautiful, but so uncomfortable, it’s usually the last one you’ll wear? You get the picture. I know that I’ve shared on this topic before but I so believe in a good fitting motorcycle, especially for women. You might be able to ride an ill-fitting bike in good road conditions and for a short period of time, however, what if you have to really maneuver to avoid an accident? And what about if everybody wants to ride longer and know your hand is going a little numb or your neck is starting to burn? It takes the fun out of the ride. If you’re going to buy that beautiful pair of shoes, make sure they fit and you can enjoy yourself in them.

I had so many women who had just started riding wanting to quit until they found our dealership and we helped fit their motorcycle to them or help them find one that did fit. It doesn’t take a lot. Maybe it’s a different set of handle bars, pull-backs, seat work, a new seat, or lowering, but sometimes it just takes one thing and an inch or two to make a huge difference. Ask yourself, do you feel like you’re handling your bike, or it handling you? Do you feel safe and comfortable? Do you ever not ride because you know you’re going to hurt afterward? Do you ever feel like you’re afraid that you’re going to get in places that you’re not prepared to maneuver your bike in? If you answer yes to any of these questions, find a local dealership and see what they can do to help you. And if they are insensitive to your needs, keep looking until you find the right one. DON’T SETTLE!

The RUFF Ride By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

M

otorcycle enthusiasts and bikers alike had plenty of things to do while they were attending Daytona Bike Week; many go on benefit rides. One thing riders and hard-core bikers will seemingly always support are benefits for children and animals. There is a soft spot for those in need in all of our hearts. This year was no exception as riders from all around took a break from Main Street and other destinations to attend Halifax Humane Society’s annual RUFF Ride and oh how the riders and supporters showed up. They arrived on everything from Harleys, Indians, metric bikes, choppers, trikes, touring bikes, rat bikes, custom bikes and even in cages. Hundreds came to support HHS to help raise both awareness and financial support to help care for the countless homeless animals across Volusia County, FL. Poker hands were $30 each and included a limited edition t-shirt, one poker hand, a barbecue dinner and drink at the 16 - Southern Biker Magazine

ending spot, the World Famous Iron Horse Saloon. Drawing stops were held at Bruce Rossmeyer’s New Smyrna HarleyDavidson, Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille, The Original First Turn and LuLu’s Oceanside Grill. At the Iron Horse Saloon, the Best and Worst hands were revealed. Top hand took home a 3-Day Cruise-for-2 donated by Southern Biker Magazine. Pam Clayton, Chief Financial Development Officer for Halifax Humane Society said, “This is the most bikes I believe we’ve ever had and they are still coming in.” Great weather and tremendous hearts brought out the best in those that came to support this great cause. Southern Biker Magazine was proud to help sponsor the event and the other ride-stop sponsors and the presenting sponsor, Politis & Matovina Law Firm. Look for this charity ride next year and make a point to go with us to take a ride… a RUFF Ride. May 2018

6TH ANNUAL OSCEOLA LAW RIDE

Benefit Rides & Events Bring Blessings & Support

BACK THE BLUE

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

here are many, many reasons bikers ride, but for a fact, they ride and DONATE to support charities, children in need or even one of their own. There are countless ways that riders raise donations to benefit the one in need like auctions, 50/50 raffles, ride donations, sponsor donations, meal donations and so much more. But once the call goes out, riders do respond. I for one am a true believer in this as I have organized so many events and sponsored and or attended hundreds of others. The face on those that benefit from such event; when they see folks turn out for them, donate for them or just hug them in support, it’s simply humbling. I know firsthand, as I was on the receiving end, just the other day. Very good friends of mine (Jeff, Christine, JD, Eugene, Sharon) put together a ride and benefit for me after I had heart surgery and saw mounting medical bills climb to an infinitely high mountain peak. They also learned another surgery is coming after this one heals up. During the event, my emotions rollercoastered all the way to a crying-humble one. Words cannot express my appreciation. There are no words that can convey the gratitude I feel. I’ve heard this from many parents, people and charities I’ve helped, but I now know the feeling they feel. It’s overwhelming. I still tear-up today just thinking about that day. I would like to thank everyone who came out to my benefit. It’s humbling to see folks you don’t personally know, come out to support you. I truly am a blessed man. If a person is measured by how many friends they have on this earth when they pass away, I feel I’m winning right now; by a lot.

fficers who are injured or have fallen in the line of duty are heroes to everyone. The Blue Knights LEMC Florida chapter 29 reminds everyone to support your local law enforcement and to BACK THE BLUE. Their 6th Annual Osceola Law Ride was held at Orlando Harley Davidson (South) where hundreds came to honor those officers who put their lives on the line every day. After the escorted ride through some of Florida’s scenic countryside into parts of Osceola, Lake, Polk and Orange counties, there was live entertainment, food, door prizes and more for the riders to enjoy. All funds raised will go directly to those affected by injuries and/or deaths while in the line of duty… protecting and serving us all. May 2018
