words from the publisher
Riders from around the southeast of the United States of America and beyond,
The 2017 Daytona Bike Week is over and the season has been officially kicked off in a HUGE way. I say that because there were more people at the 76th Annual Daytona Bike Week than there was at the historic 75th. The crowd has signaled they want to ride and in that crowd, there were a TON of new faces. Lots of Harleys, Indians, Hondas, Kawasakis,Yamahas, Suzukis, BSAs, custom creations, homemade builds and many others all riding down the roads of Florida. Yep, it's gonna be a good year for the rider.
Saying that, I am quickly reminded about recent motorcycle deaths and even health related deaths of friends and family. Please keep your health in check, do your part to stay upright like, don't drink and ride and don't let friends drink and ride. Also, get those motorcycles checked out right away. It might be tough to do, but get those tires checked or replaced, fluids checked, motorcycle extras added on and a general good going over the bike if you let your local dealer or independent shop do it. They can do it all quickly and reasonably. We are discovering new roads with our riding and event partner Smokin' Joe Ball. He does a lot of rides throughout the year in and around East Tennessee so hit him up on Facebook and see some new sights. New roads also mean CAUTION. If you don't know the road, know your limit. A road can quickly become a switchback and that road can quickly become the ditch or a side of a hill. Keep it low and slow and the rubber side down. Myself and our staff are working to bring you the finest in motorcycle reading throughout the year with valuable information on events and great deals on some retail items and vacations. Take advantage of these and make it the best riding season of all time.out on the road!

76th Daytona Bike Week Witnesses Largest Crowd in Past Years By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
S
ignaling the beginning of the riding season for 2017, the Daytona Beach Bike Week was a huge success as far as number of riders attending. The crowd was larger on the first Friday night on Main Street over last year’s 75th Bike Week first Friday night as everyone was elbow to elbow from the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon to A1A. Due partly, I believe, from a lot of riders not coming to Biketoberfest when Hurricane Mathew hit Daytona Beach and caused a lot of destruction. Well, Daytona Beach has recovered totally from that hurricane hit and businesses were up and running. Hotels were packed with very little vacancies anywhere, restaurants were full and motorcycles were everywhere. Riders from around the US and countries around the world came roaring into the place known as the World’s Most Famous Beach. Our friends from Finland, Germany, Italy, France, England and Canada all came down to attend and we had a worldwide reunion of sorts. Jay Allen at the Broken Spoke even toasted a couple of riders who are handicapped, Vince and Billy. Vince (pictured in the Blue shirt and wheel chair with Jay) RODE his bike 2100 miles to Daytona Bike Week from Arizona.
Main Street ibi Danilo & B 8 - Southern Biker Magazine
Smokin’ Joe Ball, Liz Cunningham, Angel, Ms Mag Man, Bibi, Danilo, Bernd, Suzi and the rest of the SBMag Road Crew came to cover all the Bike Week events, DIS racing, Supercross and of course, take in some of the local cuisine we enjoy every time we are here: Zappi’s Italian Garden, Finn’s, Charlie Horse Restaurant (for all you can eat crab legs), Racing’s North Turn, Bruno’s Pizzeria, and Aunt Catfishes just to name a few.
the Broken Spoke, Indian of Daytona, the Cabbage Patch and more. While at Rossmeyer’s, Ms Mag Man got a Boogey Lights upgrade to her bike by Dennis Maniatis and George Biedler! (continued on page 10)
The entertainment was at a premium as we saw some new acts as well as some of our great friends singing for the masses; Hayfire, Big Engine, Miss Intent, the rockabilly Rockets, Geneva, and the always most popular and favorite, the Highway to Hell Ultimate AC/DC Tribute Band. My good friend Jasmine Cain was especially ON during Bike Week. Official venues were covered up the entire week with riders and customers buying lots of merchandise from the vendors who were at each venue; Beach Street vendors, Rossmeyer’s HarleyDavidson, the Daytona International Speedway and Main Street businesses. Other favorite places were packed as well like Boot Hill Saloon, Iron Horse Saloon,

Our host hotel, the Dream Inn, was in the final stages of their remodel from Hurricane Matthew. The staff and all the workers were so polite and glad we were there. The owner, Jody Kinberger, did an amazing job transforming his slice of heaven for everyone to enjoy. We hosted an afternoon party were many folks came to enjoy a cookout and good friendships.
Next up for Daytona Beach is the historic mark for Biketoberfest, their 25th Annual, set for October 19-22. It will be one to make sure you attend as the event organizers are preparing to make it the largest Biketoberfest ever. We have made ours so we’ll see you there!
Brittney Olsen Wins First-Ever Sons of Speed Boardtrack Race
B
rittney Olsen has etched her name in the record books as the first winner of the Sons of Speed Boardtrack Races on her 1923 Harley “J” Model. Olsen was fast all day closely followed by second place finisher Matt Harris also riding a Harley “J” Model. Daytona Beach’s own Shelly Rossmeyer-Pepe captured
the final podium spot aboard her 1915 Harley Boardtracker after having to go through the LCQ just to get into the main event. Billy Lane put together a fantastic display of vintage bike
racing for a large audience. All of the motorcycles are all direct drive, meaning if the engine is running, the rear wheel is spinning and you have to go. I can’t wait until next year’s event and see how big the crowd grows.
Danny Eslick wins Daytona 200
T
OBC Racing Yamaha rider Danny Eslick took the checked flag in route to his third Daytona 200 win. Second place went to Michael Barnes after Cory West’s bike was discovered with an illegal air filter
on post race inspection. Kyle Wyman finished off the podium. Eslick took home $25,000 for the win as well as a Rolex Daytona watch worth a further $10,000.
Mees Wins Inaugural Daytona TT
T
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
hree-time AMA Pro Grand National Champion Jared Mees wins a historic victory for Indian Motorcycles as he takes home the Championship trophy for winning the inaugural Daytona TT inside the Daytona International Speedway. Mees, riding for Team Indian Wrecking Crew, became the first rider to win an American Flat Track race on an Indian Scout FTR750. It was also the first win on a V-twin since 1983. “You don’t know how special it is to win the first Daytona TT on the Indian,” Mees said. “I’m going to go down in the record books as the first to win on the Indian...” Mees’ rival and fellow teammate Bryan Smith finished second on his No. 1 Indian motorcycle. Finishing out the podium was Henry Wiles on his No. 17 DPW Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650.
10 - Southern Biker Magazine
Rebranded as the American Flat Track series, the race was touted as Harley-Davidson vs. Indian, but there were all the other manufacturers here too and they didn’t hold back and allow the two V-Twins to race by themselves. Being inside of DIS, instead of on the original outside track, allowed for more spectators to be in the stands and get a lot better view of the racing action. Many vendors set up inside the new DIS Grandstands and many VIP people were on hand like the President and CEO of Harley-Davidson Matthew Levatich. Harley-Davidson teams as well as the others will be looking for revenge during the season so stay tuned for more follow-up as
the championship takes hold for 2017. The rebranded American Flat Track series will kick off its debut year with the DAYTONA TT (Tourist Trophy) on Thursday, March 16, part of Bike Week at Daytona International Scott Maddux, owner of Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson, & Speedway. Dirt track S. Levatich, President motorcycle racers such as Matthew of Harley-Davidson Jared Mees, Bryan Smith, Jake Johnson, Sammy Halbert and Kenny Coolbeth Jr. will battle for a coveted Daytona trophy on a .6mile course complete with additional turns and a jump located in the “World Center of Racing’s” famed tri-oval. Tomac Goes Back-To-Back at Daytona, Then Takes a Hat Trick at Indy By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
D
aytona International Speedway was the site of the 10th round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series where Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac won the 450SX Main Event by a whoppin’ seventeen seconds. GEICO Honda’s Jeremy Martin subbing for injured Ken Roczen, in his first-ever 450SX ride, took 2nd place with Jason Anderson taking the final podium spot holding off a tremendous charge by defending champion Ryan Dungey who began the main in 17th place. “At the beginning of the race, Jeremy [Martin] was riding really good,” said Tomac. “I didn’t want to push myself too hard. I knew it was a long race. I tried what I could do to stay with him, but not go too hard too early. Once I got in my groove, I was able to get by him there and take it all the way home. It was awesome!” Three-time Daytona winner, Monster Energy/Yamalube/Factory Yamaha’s Chad Reed crashed during a great run but was relegated to 6th place.

Cole Seely, 185 with the win and dethroned Ryan Dungey 4. Marvin Musquin, 185 (1 win) who had a 4 year win streak there. Tomac 5. Jason Anderson, 155
dominated, plain and simple. Dundey challenged Tomac but eventually fell back and was passed by Teammate Marvin Musquin with about 4 minutes remaining. Dungey held on to the third spot to get back on the podium after missing it in Daytona.
“That was a hard-fought 27 laps tonight,” said Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Tomac, who has now won three consecutive races. “I’m happy we’re picking up race wins and we’re still 12 points out. Even if I won every race right now, it still takes four races to get there, and we only have six left. So that’s a big ask. So we’ll just do what we can and take it week by week.”

NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycles “New Kid on The Block” The rumors are true; Ryan Oehler announced his newly formed team, “Flyin Ryan Racing,” and plans to race on NHRA’s pro stock motorcycle 2017 North American tour. A few years back, Ryan trained on his ProMod and enlisted the help of Frank Hawley’s drag racing school and got his first seven second pass with George Bryce of Star Racing on a Suzuki school bike. Star Racing Rider’s Challenge came next with the opportunity to race as the teammate of 3X pro stock motorcycle world champion, Angelle Sampey Drango. Ryan became a finalist in the challenge but was unable to take home the crown and the Star teammate spot. This

only fueled Ryan’s desire to win and compete on the sports highest level, NHRA pro stock motorcycle tour. By the end of that year, Ryan won his first AMRA championship on his Pro-Mod Harley Davidson®. The following year, Ryan won his second championship and was nearly undefeated in the AMRA Pro-Mod class. “In late 2016, the opportunity to purchase Angell’s 2015 Buell from Star Racing became a reality. This motorcycle is an absolute rocket ship.” The rest is history. The team is now formed and ready to compete for the championship.
“I also want to say a special thanks for my father, Bad Brad Oehler, without his love and support, none of this would be possible” said Ryan. “Dreams do come true. It’s been a ton of hard work and commitment but I would not change one thing that has or is happening on this journey to professional drag racing. I simply want to represent the class and race fans well” stated Ryan.

International Female Ride Day on May 7th Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc. Christine Sumer Simmons beautiful, photographic history book, The American Motorcycle Girls. It is an amazing collection of pictures, ads and history of women riders from the 1900's through the 1950's.
I
'm actually writing this article in an airport in Australia on my way to New Zealand and my only regret is that it's been a "working trip" and not a "riding trip". One day! But that's not my article - I wanted to remind everyone that May 7th is International Female Ride Day. And for those of you who think women riders is a new phenomenon, I really encourage you to check out the history of women related to motorcycling. One of the best ways to do that is by purchasing
I used the book for my Pre-MSF Confidence Building Class. It always helped women see that in the early days of motorcycling women behind their own bars wasn't unusual. You'll also get to meet some of the amazing women who were history makers. You will be inspired as you read and study the early days of women riders. The book also makes an amazing gift
for the women in your life who ride. Many men were surprised when they discover women riders had a legacy that started in the early 1900's. In the late 50's, women began to be relegated to the back by biker gangs and bikes and gear that didn't fit. That began to change especially in the last thirty years and now women are the fastest growing segment of the motorcycle industry. So I encourage you to study your heritage and do something for International Female Ride Day, even if it's getting a few ladies together in your own area and taking a ride!

Gatlinburg Rises from the Ashes By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
G
atlinburg, its residents and its businesses are moving full speed ahead to rebuild what many have said is a great destination for motorcycle riders following the November 28, 2016 wildfires that damaged or destroyed over $1 billion in property. Insurance companies, construction companies and the city/ county building permit offices have been busy getting the area back to 100% of their operations and they are just about there. Many thought it would take years, but with the help of the community, state and private citizens, money has been raised to help nearly everyone. Big name entertainers like Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, the Zac Brown Band and many others donated funds, had concerts and helped raise millions to get immediate help to those affected.
Located near the Tail of the Dragon, Gatlinburg is also a mega motorcycle destination. Home to many great venues, restaurants and scenery, Gatlinburg is a must for today’s motorcycle riders. Here they can also ride other great roads nearby like the Cherohala Skyway, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Land of Waterfalls Loop, the Rattler, the Back of the Dragon and many more. It has everything to offer all types of riders and their families with downtown Gatlinburg restaurants and fun activities for everyone. Several dealerships are in the surrounding area and there are many guided tour businesses for the riders who would like to get to their destination instead of exploring
the roads for themselves. The mountains, streams, waterfalls and views are truly magnificent and breathtaking in the spring and Gatlinburg is ready for you to come ride or vacation. The tourists are returning in great numbers and doing business with hotels and cabins and enjoying their time in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. Southern Biker Magazine continues to support Gatlinburg wherever we can and get the word out all over the southeast and beyond that Gatlinburg is ready to host you, your family, your riding clubs and your conferences. This is just one of many ways we are proud to help out. For more information on Gatlinburg, please go to: www.Gatlinburg.com.
