WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER

Hello Folks, Did you know riding motorcycles helps keep you young? Recently, I met a couple from Arizona that just moved to Tellico Plains, TN. I overheard someone say they have ridden their motorcycle to every state park in the United States. I was curious and wanted to meet this couple. They had a motorcycle wreck last year and the wife was healing from a hip fracture. They have since sold their motorcycle and retired from riding at the young age of 90 YEARS OLD! This couple looked amazing! They certainly didn’t look their age. They wore their well worn biker leather jackets with patches from all over and had a glow to their skin from many years of riding

in sunshine. They were vibrant and cheerful. They even had smart phones and knew how to use them. It was a pleasure to meet them and I’m happy to say I will be writing an article about them and their journeys in a future issue. They are always on the go, traveling and hard to track down. I hope when I am their age, I am as active and alert as they are. That’s why I believe riding helps you feel young. Taking care of our bodies is like doing preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment; if you don’t take care of it, it will break down on you. Confederate Motors becomes Curtiss Motorcycles By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

D

uring the 2018 Concours D’Elegance in Monterey, CA, Confederate Motors announced a new era for the company, a new direction for their motorcycles, and a new name—Curtiss Motorcycles, honoring the East Coast motorcycle speed demon, inventor and aviation hero Glenn Curtiss. Whether or not it was true, the name change did have some influence over just the name “Confederate,” said company president Matt chambers in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times. “I think we lost a lot a business with that name. We’ve missed out on branding opportunities. So, it’s time to retire it. Regardless of the name, the company is taking a big swing into the future and turning their hardcore-metal V-Twin designs into futuristic electric motorcycles and partnering with Zero Motorcycles to develop an all-electric cruiser. The announcement comes on the heels of the company’s unveiling of the Curtiss Warhawk, the first new Curtiss Motorcycle released in over 100 years (and apparently, its last V-Twin) while paying homage to the man who invented the first American V-Twin motorcycle, Glenn Curtiss. “The American V-twin is undoubtedly the most iconic and revered powertrain in

motorcycle history,” says Curtiss CEO Matt Chambers. “As we prepare to lead an all-new golden age of electrified motorcycles, this Curtiss Warhawk represents the best and final chapter in American V-Twin power and refinement. We’re building a handful of these Warhawks in honor of Mr. Curtiss and as a bequeathment from the brand of yesterday to the brand of tomorrow.” Transitioning from internal combustion to electric propulsion will not be an easy feat as they will be ignoring part of their following and trying to attract new “green” customers. On 5.5.2018, the company will unveil its newest, allelectric design. Hercules was the name for inspiration, but many see it as being the P40-Warhawk as shown in some of the teaser design videos from the company’s video. The sketches show two coupled Zero electric motors on the back near the rear swingarm. We will see exactly what the name is and what it looks like on May 5th of this year. The company will be based in Birmingham, Alabama and Curtiss Motorcycle Company is on a mission to design and craft the world’s best and finest electric motorcycles. finish second by only 0.462 seconds. TT specialist Henry Wiles made a strong charge on his Willy Built Kawasaki Ninja 650-based machine and finished third. That put three different brands on the podium, showing the competitiveness of the race. Sammy Halbert was the top Harley-Davidson rider taking 11th.

In the final 25-lap main event, Mees battled his Indian teammate Brad Baker. Once up front Mees pushed to nearly a twosecond gap ahead of second place. Then MotoAmerica road racer JD Beach worked his way into second on his Team95 Yamaha FZ-07 began closing the gap. He would

The event began with a ride to the front straight away by 100 of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement motorcycle club, then a huge flag unveiled, a prayer and the National Anthem with everyone standing! Then out of retirement, Doug Danger, who has broken nearly all of Evel Knievel’s record jumps, takes his Harley-Davidson and jumps over 10 cars and trucks. Now that’s a pre-event for the main event, the TT race.

The series heads to the Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA, on April 7 for round two. For additional series info go to www. americanflattrack.com.

Yamaha’s AI-Powered

Motoroid Motorcycle By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he age of artificial intelligence is here and with the increase of computer technologies and manufacturing processes, we are not far away from even robots living with us. Remember my article a couple of years ago on Yamaha’s Motobot, the first ever robot able to ride a motorcycle? Well, Motobot Version #2 is capable of riding an unmodified bike and has apparently met its initial goal of lapping a circuit at high speed. Yamaha says it has also challenged Valentino Rossi to a battle of lap times and is currently holding a poll on its website where you can vote for who you reckon will win the contest. I’ve already voted for Rossi. Yamaha isn’t going to let time or competition pass by them in the electric motorcycle market either. As a matter of fact, they intend to one up the competition. Their new Motoroid concept motorcycle is more than just an electric motorcycle and will put their Motobot #2 in the low-tech category. Being shown at the 2018 CES, The Motoroid uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) to interact with the rider during operation. Yes, you heard it right, Yamaha’s Motoroid concept prototype is capable of recognizing its owner and interacting in other capacities like a living creature. The Japanese manufacturer says its AI technology can offer the rider an experience of ‘Kando’, the Japanese concept of deep spiritual inspiration and satisfaction. Its AMCES system allows the motorcycle to self-balance. It uses AI algorithms, along with a high-resolution camera mounted to its 14 - Southern Biker Magazine

front, for image and gesture recognition. It will approach you on command by hand gestures alone and it will follow you. The bike can completely roam around a certain space unmanned, pushing the concept of automation even further. Facial recognition technology will be used in part for the new keyless entry and the motorcycle’s operation. With AI enabled gesture recognition, the Motoroid can presumably learn new gestures, which will give new owners a level of customization and more functionalities with varying levels of complexity, thus enhancing the rider’s abilities and the motorcycle will continue to learn the riders habits and riding abilities. It also comes with a haptic HMI (human-machine interface), allowing the Motoroid to respond to voice commands, vibrations and audio alerts. It provides an interface for the rider to interact with the motorbike and engages the owner with a wider range of feedback. Controlled by gesture or voice command, the HUD projector will project infotainment details in thin air by way of its holographic projector as there is no instrument panel. Yamaha isn’t sharing too many specifics on this prototype, but it’s definitely headed into the future. Production plans are not written in stone yet as the laws governing two wheelers will not make the Motoroid a road-legal vehicle for at least the near future. The technology itself is still far away from being implementable but it is coming. Whatever Yamaha has in store for the rider, it is exciting to see the direction they are heading in and the abilities we are seeing now. Life like Star Trek and Transformers are so far fathomed to be real…or are they?

FIT to ROAR I really believe that being as fit as possible when we ride increases confidence and prevents injuries. I love to see women riding but I also want them to ride safe and ride strong. So here’s a little fitness information that can go a long way in increasing your riding fitness. Riding and Core Strength – When motorcyclists are riding they use their whole body, however, there are three major muscles that do most of the work. These muscles are the stomach, forearms and inner thigh. In this last decade one of the primary health issues in men and woman over 25 is back and lower back problems. In my 30 years of fitness training it has been my experience that 90 percent of all back problems come from weak abdominal muscles. If you can get your core area strong and healthy, most, if not all, back problems go away. In the last 10 years we have seen a thrust toward core training, Core muscles include the abdomen, lumbar region, chest (pectorals) and some shoulders (trapezes and laterals). As your core area strength increases, you will find that you rely less on your arms to support your body while riding. Stomach – Used for position and posture on the bike Sit-Ups – target upper abdominals. Start by lying flat on your back, knees bent. Place your hands palm down on the front of your pelvis, slowly sit up, sliding your hands down the front of your legs and just over your knee caps, then slowly lower back to the floor. Repeat this until you can feel it in your abdominals. Try to work up to 25 repetitions for 3 sets.

You should be balancing on your buttocks. Lift your legs forward toward your chest as far as you can. Do as many times as you can. Try to work up to 25 repetitions for 3 sets. Leg Raises – target lower abdominals. Start by lying flat on your back, keeping your spine on the floor. Raise your legs about a foot and a half off the floor and hold them there for 3 seconds. Then gently lower your legs to the floor. Repeat this until you can feel it in your lower abdominals. Work toward 10 repetitions for 2 sets.

Just by doing these simple excises you will begin to feel stronger and in more control of your body and of your bike. You will enjoy your time while riding your bike so much more. Now just take a couple of minutes and try each one of these exercises. In the beginning you might only be able to do a few repetitions but don’t get discouraged just keep working your way up and before you know it you will be doing 2 or 3 sets with ease.

Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

Chair Leg Raises – target middle abdominals. I like to first begin these leg raises by sitting on a chair. This will take most of the pressure off of the back area. First sit down on your chair, put your hands behind you and grab the back of the bottom of the chair, and lean back half way by lying down.

77th DAYTONA BIKE WEEK IS

IN THE MIRROR By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he 2018 riding season has officially opened as the Daytona Beach Bike Week has come to a close. The Road Crew, Smokin’ Joe Ball, Liz Cunningham and I took part of a lot of events going on in the area; the Supercross, the Daytona 200, the TT Race, Main Street activities, Vendors and events at Daytona International Speedway, on Beach Street and Destination Daytona and hitting a few great spots for bands including the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon. Hundreds of thousands of riders roared into Daytona even the though the weather was a little chilly, but it never stopped the riders and attendees having a TREMENDOUS Time! Riders from around the world come to this event every year and for good reason… the biggest, largest bike week there is, and everyone comes to see and be seen. Our friends from overseas were no different as Bernd & Suzi came over from Germany, Paul & Sam Savage came from the United Kingdom and Fredrick & Anu Kamis came over from Finland. What a great time we had catching up. We also got to see a lot of our Blue Knight friends and a couple from Tennessee we adore, Dale & Pauly Goetsch. Top entertainment acts were all over the place like Hayfire, Jasmine Cain, AC/DC Highway to Hell, Matthew Hickey Band, Jackel, Saliva, Big Engine, Miss Intent, Stone Grey, the Razorbacks and a whole lot more! Jay Allen was again at the Broken Spoke Saloon and the Iron Horse Saloon was hoppin’. Taking in all the events and entertainment gives you a big appetite so we rode into some of our favorite eateries; Zappi’s Italian Garden, Finn’s Beachside Pub, Racing’s North Turn, Bruno’s Pizzeria, and Aunt Catfishes. It was Nappy-Nap time after partaking at a few of those places. Stopping in at Destination Daytona, Ms. Mag Man’s bike had to get a LED upgrade, so we – continued on page 22

Eslick wins

the 77th Daytona 200 By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

D

anny Eslick grabbed a historic win in the action-packed 77th running of the Daytona 200 on Saturday, March 17. He did it in dominating fashion as well after several of his rivals dropped out of the race due to crashes or technical problems. The TOBC Racing Yamaha R6 rider crossed the finish line more than 26 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Cory West to take his fourth Daytona 200 crown. His other victories came in 2014, ’15 and ’17. Eslick now ranks third on the all-time Daytona 200 wins list with four championships with only five-time champions Scott Russell (1992, ’94-95, ’97-98) and Miguel Duhamel (1991, ’96, ’99, 2003, ’05) sharing the all-time record for victories. This win almost didn’t happen at all before the week even got started. Three weeks prior, Eslick’s team was not planning on competing in the event due to lack of sponsorship and funding.

22 - Southern Biker Magazine

Using an all-volunteer pit crew and a last minute sponsor, the entire team helped Eslick cement his name in the motorcycle road racing history books. Eslick, who averaged 95.834 mph, also credited his crew with their preparation of a spare engine forced into use after the team’s first engine failed during Friday’s qualifying. “Again, it goes back to the team,” Eslick said. “They busted their butt last night. I don’t know what they did but they found a couple horsepower in that thing and it definitely made my life easier.” For West it was his second-consecutive second-place finish, while Robertino Pietri used a classic Daytona draft pass on fourthplace finisher Geoff May on the last lap to round out the podium.
