words from the publisher
Hello Readers,
We returned from the warm Florida weather after attending the 72nd Annual Bike Week in Daytona Beach. What a great time we had! We met some wonderful new friends from across the pond and you can read more about that in Randy's article this issue. When we are out at events like this, we are usually working (taking photos, promoting the magazine, talking to potential advertisers and solidifying relationships with existing advertisers), so I usually have tunnel vision. I was hanging out at Roar Motorcycles (waiting for a free chair massage) when someone said Arlen Ness was next door at the Victory dealer. So I hustled to see if I could snap a couple photos with Mr. Ness, but on my way over, I passed someone that could have been R. Lee Ermey's (a/k/a Gunny from Full Metal Jacket) twin. So I continued inside the Victory dealer but couldn't find Mr. Ness.As I walked around the dealership, I overheard two sales staff talking and looking outside on the street and saying, "they don't know who that is". When I looked, it was R. Lee Ermey himself! I don't get star struck too much, but I watched his shows and have to admit I'm a fan, especially because I have two sons that are Marines. So I walked outside and asked if he would mind taking a photo with me. A couple was standing there wanting the same thing, so we took photos for each other. When I turned around, there was a whole crowd of people stand behind me wanting to talk with Mr. Ermey. It was nice to meet Mr. Ermey. He rides a Victory, as you can imagine. We look forward to attending Biketoberfest this year. Hope to see you out and about this year. Keep Your Knees In The Breeze! he powersports industry came out in force to Indianapolis, Indiana for the Dealernews Magazine’s 2013 International Powersports Dealer Expo, a professional tradeshow where only dealers, distributors, aftermarket parts and accessory companies and original equipment manufacturers are invited. Over 500 exhibitors attended this year and brought over 20,000 new products in the powersports industry ready for you to compare. Everything from every day attire, racing wears, helmets, dirt bikes, ATV’s RTV’s, buggies and some custom stuff that was out of this world. Celebrities from all facets came to the show like SX Legend Jeremy McGrath, SX rider Nick Wey, 5-time Dakar Rally winner Cyril Despres and even Tennessee native hotty Heather Chastain were seen signing autographs. The Dealer 100 Awards were announced in our March issue where we mentioned all the dealers in our distribution area. Congratulations to all the dealers. The attendance this year was noticeably down. Cold weather, the economy and the fact that the International Motorcycle Show, a consumer event, was going on next door may have had something to do with it. The Expo, however is moving their February 2014 show to October 2013 and it will be permanently moved to October going forward.

72nd Daytona Bike Week Sees Larger Attendance than in Past Years
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
f the 72nd Annual Daytona Bike Week is an indication of this year’s motorcycle industry interest, then things are about to pick up! Mother Nature also helped with an average of 75 degrees and sunny weather for the entire Bike Week event. Several riders stated that was the reason they came down at the last minute. Riders from all over the world came to enjoy what has become known as the World’s Bike Week and the beginning of riding season. We stayed at the August Seven Bed & Breakfast. A couple from Maryville, Tennessee and us were the only Americans staying at the B&B. There were couples from Germany, Great Britain, Isle of Mann and others. We were extremely grateful to meet Paul & Vicki Diamond, a British couple who we let borrow our vehicle all week as there were no motorcycles for them to rent in the area. Roar Motorcycles expanded and moved to Beach Street where there was a noticeably larger crowd and a 20% increase in vendors. My wife, Kristin, attended Roar’s “Sisterhood Ride” and met some awesome ladies that ride their own

motorcycle. She had a great time bonding with other ladies with the same passion as her. They offer “Sisterhood Rides” throughout the year; make plans to attend the ride during Biketoberfest. Destination Harley-Davidson, the Daytona International Speedway and many others had more vendors than years past as businesses reached out to get a big start on their bottom line. Several industry leading bike builders were there as well; Arlen Ness (more on him in our next issue), Paul Yaffe, Eddie Trotta, Dave Perewitz, Paul Teutul Sr. and others came to show off their creations. This year was different than years past. We made many new friends from around the country and around the world while attending Bike Week. We made as many events and rides as possible including bike shows and concerts. At Charlie Horse this year, at the All-U-Can-Eat-Crab-Legs, I was out eaten by Uncle Phil Ciufo by one pound and Paul Diamond from Great Britain by three pounds with his total of 13.5 pounds. My Tennessee record of 15 pounds still stands but Charlie Horse’s all time record is 19 pounds by a lady who lives in Daytona. We have a new favorite restaurant though, Zappi’s Italian Garden. If you go to Daytona, you cannot miss going there for authentic Italian food and the best pizza in the Daytona area. I hope you enjoy the many photos of Bike Week. Make your plans for Biketoberfest as we will be sponsoring a bike show on Beach Street in Biketoberfest and those plans will be forthcoming as we get sponsors and awards lined up.

A McKinnFinn European Tour (Part 2 of 3)

he next day dawned bright and pleasant as we headed east out of Sonthoffen and picked up the Deutsch Alpenstrasse, which for a while also combined with the Romantic Road. We saw magnificent views while on this road and quite a few stunning castles. Soon we were rid-
ing the spine of the German Alps and the small hamlets and villages sporadically dotted the landscape. As we rode along the farmers were starting their hay harvest and it was amazing to see them working the steep meadows where it seemed impossible to stand, let alone cut, rake and pick up hay with machinery. We were also impressed to see the women working in the corners and edges of the fields with long rakes working hard so that not a single stalk of hay went to waste. It was easy to see why our BMWs were so impressive after seeing the work ethic of the hardy Bavarians. After riding most of the day on the Deutsch Alpenstrasse, we pulled into a

small Gasthaus in the very scenic, very charming hamlet of Bayrischzell, Germany. As we dined on Weinerschnitzel and hot Brats, Robert sampled some of the local ales; reporting that they were delicious. As we dined, some of the locals were circling overhead in their hang gliders and landed in a picturesque meadow just across the road from us. Watching them in the cloudless sky as they floated and rode the rising air currents was the purest form of entertainment. As we wiled away the afternoon and early evening the airmen drifted into the Gasthaus and regaled each other with their recount of the day...in German. When the bierfrau came back around I inquired about lodging. She returned with a local merchant magazine and opened to the page showing the local establishment. I asked if it “was gut?” She replied, “Closed!” Closed? “Ja, on Dienstag(Tuesday), closed”. I tried to ex-
plain we needed a room now. She brought the house phone and dialed the number. A very pleasant woman answered the phone in German, and I asked if she spoke English. “Yes”, she replied, and I asked if she had two rooms for the evening. She did have rooms, but they were closed. But, she offered to come to the hotel and open up and let us two rooms if I could meet her at 8:00. I did. We got the keys to two rooms plus the front door of the hotel and she asked if I would mind locking up when I came in for the night, as there would be no one there. I thanked her and tried to pay for our rooms but the Hausfrau told me to just pay her in the morning...and have a good night. Upon returning back to the Gasthaus, I found Robert deep in conversation with three of the glider pilots. They were as much in awe of our trip as we were their flying skills. They asked about our planned route and I got my map and showed them where we had planned on going. One of April, 2013 April

them took my pen and started circling the good spots and told us where to avoid. After nearly an hour, our new found German friends had completely revised our route and confirmed some of our destination choices. The next morning, Robert headed out early to walk around the hamlet of Bayrischzell and found one of new friends eagerly waiting for one of us to come down
to the lobby. He worked across the street from the hotel and had printed out four different trip packets from Google maps for us. After everyone’s kindness, we decided to stay at Bayrischzell an extra night and take in a day tour to the Hintertuxer Gletscher in Austria. Our ride to the glacier was stunning. The highpoint of this day trip was a ride on 3 separate trams to the top of the mountain. At one point, near the top, our ascent was nearly vertical. As we rode silently up the mountain we were treated to even more stunning views, waterfalls from the
still melting snow pack, and even cows grazing on tiny patches of land not much larger than the cows themselves. When we left the foot of the glacier, the temperature was nearly 90 degrees. When we exited the last tram car at the top of the glacier (literally, as the tallest peak was only 20 or 30 feet above us) the temperature had dropped to the low 40s. And we didn’t bring any jackets either. Atop the moun-

tain the snow was deep and even though it was August, there were skiers swooshing down some of the slopes. Our descent was a bit more harrowing than the ascent but still worth all 25 Euro we paid for the round trip. Back at the bottom of the glacier it was hot again and we suited up and headed back to Bayrischzell for another great meal and good night sleep. With air conditioning a scarce commodity in Europe we were grateful for the cool night.
Thursday morning found us hitting the starter buttons around 0900 underneath clear, cool skies. We pointed our two BMWs toward the east intending to ride the rest of the Deutsch Alpenstrasse through Bertschesgaden, and a visit to the Eagle’s Nest; Hitler’s mountaintop retreat. As we got closer to the Austrian border I led us on a wild goose chase and ended up missing the Nest, but managed to salvage the day with some more spectacular roads. I did manage to find the road across Grossglockner Pass, a toll road through the pass to the Alp’s highest mountain. We paid our 22 Euro and hadn’t ridden more than a quarter mile past the toll booth before the skies opened up and started a steady downpour. Finding a pull off, we donned our rain gear and let the ABS and traction control safely help us across the nearly 50 km toll road. As luck would have it, the rain missed the last 5 km of toll road which was sinfully curvy, and dry. I did a couple of spirited runs up and down the dry pavement to try to salvage some of the day’s riding. At the end of the toll road was a traffic circle with a sign pointing to the Pasterze glacier. With not much to lose, we headed
the bikes up the road which offered good surface and great scenery. It also led us to the glacier; and more rain. While the Grossglockner pass and mountain may be stunning the glacier was more anticlimactic after visiting the Hintertuxer. But the visit was free and it was worth the ride up and back. Leaving the pass and the toll road behind we worked our way into Italy and some better weather. The rain stopped and so did we at the Passo Giau. There, like so many places in Europe, is a small Gasthaus and restaurant. Primarily filled with bikers, we took a break and enjoyed a couple of beverages and the best apple Strudel in all of the Alps. I would go back there just for that! While the rain had stopped, the skies were still overcast and gloomy so we decided to press on and hope for better weather. An hour or so later revealed sunny skies again and we rode in warmth to our lodging for the night; Merano, Italy.
As we did for most nights, we just rode until we were ready to stop and looked for local accommodations. We thought our luck was running out as we searched the GPS for lodging and our first several attempts came up with blanks. Then we found on the eastern side of Merano a lovely 4 star hotel, with the most stunning, and helpful, front desk staff. They gave us a good deal at 100 Euro for the night and even sent up portable room air conditioners for us. We enjoyed an exquisite meal on a very scenic and comfortable veranda. ....the conclusion continued in the May edition.... April, 2013 April

he annual V-Twin Expo is a tradeshow held in Cincinnati, Ohio every year and is attended by the largest aftermarket manufacturers, dealers, custom bike shops and motorcycle media magazines and papers. This year’s show definitely had more attendees than last year. Custom bikes from all over the country made the show. Paul Yaffe of Bagger Nation had a great set up as did Dave Perewitz and his crew. Seeing these two guys who are tops in their fields made our visit a lot more pleasant. We got to see all the new lines for V-Twins; everything from wheels, tires, exhausts, Hoppe fairings, cleaning products, lubricating oils and we were excited to see many different types of motorcycle accessories as well as custom painting available in 2013. There was everything to put on a motorcycle except the kitchen sink; I bet it was there, I just didn’t see it. The V-Twin show as of next year will eliminate the usual slow Monday part of the show and extend its Saturday and Sunday hours. Next years dates are February 1-2, 2014.

Easyriders Bike Show Nashville, Tennessee
T
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
he Easyrider Bike Show in Nashville, TN began with controversy that seems to follow it. They posted “No Colors” (no motorcycle club attire) may enter the show. This set off a very alarming signal to all clubs that wear patches and many boycotted the event. However, there were a couple people spotted wearing theirs inside while others were not allowed to enter. The event featured motorcycles from all around Nashville and several from outside the area. Celebrities included Sons of Anarchy, Opie (Ryan Hurst), Full Throttles Mike and Angie Ballard. Several vendors came with their wears and motorcycle accessories. This was a first for the Nashville area and the event brought out many riders from around the area. April,, 2013 April

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy ameron Beaubier won the 72nd DAYTONA 200 aboard his Y.E.S Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 in the famous 200-mile race. Beaubier earned pole and led much of the race by a wide margin, putting his stamp on a GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing event that many racing legends have claimed for themselves over the years. He nearly lapped the entire field up to fifth place and won by 22.254 seconds. The 20-year-old set a high mark as he begins the 2013 AMA Pro season with a stellar race. He led all but seven laps, taking the lead for the last on lap 21 and never look-

In the final race, Martin Cardenas celebrated a spectacular victory in his first weekend with the storied Yoshimura Suzuki squad. Monster Energy Graves Yamaha teammate of Josh Hayes, Josh Herrin took second. Herrin nearly crashed out on lap 10, running off in Turn 1. He re-entered the race with any other incident but had to chase down and pass Larry Pegram on the Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing Yamaha YZF-R1.

oadRace Factory rider Tomas Puerta won Saturday’s AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport Race Two at Daytona International Speedway. CJ Weaver on the Napa Auto-sponsored Yamaha managed second while Corey Alexander on the National Guard/Celtic Racing Suzuki team took third. Many riders, including Stefano Mesa, Jeffrey Tigert, and Hayden Gillim, took a turn at the front. One of the impressive riders was Sebastiao Ferreira from Brazil on his BP Racing machine that chased Puerta late. After a red flag on lap one, the race shaped up as the typical Daytona draft-fest. The top 12 finished within three seconds of Puerta.

Villopoto Takes Command of 450 Supercross
By Jacob Saylor
T
he 2013 AMA Monster Energy Supercross season has passed the halfway point and there is a new points leader with Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto. The two time defending champion has took control of the championship in dominating fashion. Villopoto started gaining momentum and steady points on Rockstar Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps around the half way mark of the series. The #1 Kawasaki of Villopoto was waiting for a mistake on Millsaps, and it came at the most grueling race of the season. Since January, Millsaps commanded and held the red plate, it only took 27 minutes to see it disappear at round 10 in Daytona. Villopoto capitalized on a bad start by Millsaps and took the points and the red plate back on his #1 Kawasaki. Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey has been the silent assassin of the series. The always consistent Minnesota native has been keeping Villopoto honest throughout the series. The KTM team has been working hard on Dungey’s set up, going back and forth from air to spring shocks. When the track gets rougher, Dungey gets faster, and will keep pressuring Villopoto all the way to the end in Las Vegas. Dungey took 2nd place in the points while Millsaps fought back valiantly, but eventually succumbed to 4th place and lost valu-

able points. Yoshimira’s James Stewart has found his mojo with a win in Atlanta, and could be the spoiler in the championship. The 250 East division has finally witnessed the speed of a healthy Wil Hahn. The Geico Honda rider has upset the title favorite Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson with two straight up wins. Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin notched two wins as well and narrowed the points gap. With only three rounds to go, the race for the 250 East championship is in the final stretch. Dean Wilson suffered an injury in Indianapolis and will miss the rest of the series with a punctured lung and broken ribs. 250 West stars Eli Tomac and Ken Roczen have been getting their feet wet in the 450 class on the East Coast. Both riders have ran up front and proving notice that they will be on factory teams when they move up to the big boy class full time. They return to battle it out for their championship when the series moves back West in Minneapolis. The 2013 season has seen many ups and downs this year. It will be remembered as the year Kevin Windham hung up his boots. Chad Reed has yet to get a win and is now the elder statesman of Supercross. The self employed rider wants to keep his Two
Two Motorsports team going for the future and would like nothing better to solidify his team with a win. The rest of the season is going to be exciting! # 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Ironhorse Trailers
the Best Enclosed Trailer on the Market By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
A
lot of motorcycle riders will ride to their destination on their motorcycle like Daytona Bike Week, Sturgis, The Lone Star Rally, Barry’s Outerbanks Bike Rally, etc. However, if you are like us, going to some events, you have to haul hundreds of pounds of magazines, event tents, luggage, swag, prizes, etc. for those event goers, plus our two dresser Harley-Davidsons. That’s when a trailer is the best way to get from point A to point B with everything including your motorcycle. Now, I’ve pulled nearly every kind of trailer known to man with boats, motorcycles, cars, golf carts......everything. This year, we were asked by Julie & Ed Heard who make a new type of trailer in Tennessee to do a review on their Ironhorse Trailer. We drove over, picked it up and with a few sim-

ple instructions; drove home packed it up and headed to Key West on our Run to the Keys motorcycle ride and a month later to the 72nd Daytona Bike Week. We had to haul everything but the kitchen sink in our GMC Denali and that trailer. We were PACKED! To say it’s the best pulling trailer I’ve ever pulled is an understatement. It’s so aerodynamic and a lot lighter than other standard trailers; sometimes you forget it back there (like I did on more than one occasion). The aerodynamic nature and light weight of the Ironhorse Trailers combine to let you cruise as fast or slow as you want to go. Their sleek lines are accented by clear-coated aluminum wheels, and a long lasting unique stainless steel tailgate handle and lock. The fiberglass unibody construction and welded rectangular steel tube frame make
Ironhorse Trailers among the sturdiest bike haulers on the market. It’s like that old saying, “You get what you pay for”. If you’re looking for an old trailer to haul crap in, this ain’t the one for you. But if you are looking for the top of the line, aerodynamic, gas saving, easy pulling, low maintenance, self contained enclosed trailer, then this is the one you’ve been waiting for. They are easy to paint and wrap or add your favorite stickers to for that personal touch. Their enclosed trailers come in a couple different versions for one and two motorcycles. They also have open trailers called the Chariots for motorcycles and golf carts that are so light weight and easy to self load, a small lady with her own motorcycle can load it with ease.

Food for Thought
by Barry Duncan
There’s a new steakhouse in town with a challenge for the meat lover. It’s a 5 lb steak and you’ll find it at Shiloh Brew & Chew. Shiloh is a family restaurant located in Maryville, TN on Highway 321 just past the hospital. They offer a full menu featuring steaks, fish and chicken. Dinners include a salad and two sides. Wild Bill tried the bologna sandwich and fries at $6.99. The bologna slice is a good two inches thick and you can get it grilled or fried. Deadbeat Donnie went for the 6 oz turkey burger and Lovely Lori had the 4 oz center cut sirloin. I enjoyed the 12 oz ribeye with pinto beans and cornbread muffins at $21. It was tender and grilled just right. We saved room for the homemade pineapple upside down cake. It’s fixed in an iron skillet and is fantastic. If you decide to take on the beef challenge, call them 24 hours in advance so they can get it cut and ready ready. 865-2337307 or check their web: www.shilobrewandchew.com
Hoecakes 2 cups corn meal 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tbsp. bacon fat 1 c. hot water 1 1/2 c. cold water Mix salt in corn meal, pour on hot water, then add enough cold water to thin the mush so it pours slow out of the bowl. Add fat and drop mush by spoonfuls on a hot griddle or skillet. Turn on both sides until brown. Over the past years I have seen a lot of southern chefs bringing back the hoecake or some people call it a johnnycake. The origin of the name is the method of preparation: field hands often cooked it on a shovel or hoe held to an open flame. Some hoe designs were large and flat with a hole for the long handle to slide through; the blade would be removed and placed over a fire much like a griddle. I like to top them with collard greens, pulled pork and hot sauce.
