words from the publisher

Hello Folks, Summer is showing how hot it can really get.Wow! This heat is brutal. Hope you are finding ways to keep cool and continue to ride. One way we keep cool while riding it hot temperatures is to utilize a cool vest. These nifty little gems are worn over or under clothes. I like to wear mine over my shirt. They are designed to be soaked in cool water for several minutes so the cells can absorb as much water as possible. The water keeps a light moister layer on your skin or clothes and when air circulates through it, it creates a cooling effect and helps cool your body. We even have one for our little Yorkie, Gracie Gracy. She loves to wear her cool vest while riding the motorcycle with her daddy because it really keeps her cool in hot temperatures. Gracie has all the motorcycle gear a dog could want. Her doggles protect her eyes from flying debris and she even has a little helmet. You can check out Gracie Gracy's fan page on Facebook and share your favorite pet photos and if they are motorcycle riding pets, even better. Let us know how you keep cool in this heat on our Southern Biker Magazine Facebook page too.

We are currently looking for new magazine staff for the Chattanooga, Nashville and Memphis area. If you or someone you know would like to make extra money in the motorcycle community, give us a call or email.

A Harley-Davidson Breaks a Victory World Record By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

A

s the saying always goes, “Records are made to be broken.” The longest burnout on a two-wheeled motorcycle is no different; one continuous, non-stopping burnout streak for distance. Now that would be impressive. A Victory motorcycle ridden by Joe Dryden held the record for the longest burnout when he took his Victory on a 2.23 mile black streak down the asphalt. Well, that didn’t sit well with Game Over Cycles and Harley-Davidson Rzeszow, Poland, so they decided to do something about it. Maciej “DOP” Bielicki is a top Polish stunt rider and the only stunt rider in Poland, who performs his feats on HarleyDavidson brand motorcycles. Throwing his leg across the new 2017 HarleyDavidson Street Rod, stunt rider Maciej practiced doing burnouts on the Street Rod for a month, but never attempted a long record one. The day came on May 20, 2017 with hundreds looking on and cheering. On his first attempt, Maciej stripped the rubber off his rear tire for the distance of 4.479 kilometers (2.78 miles) breaking Victory’s standing record. The route wasn’t your normal straight as an arrow, road for doing some record breaking. It’s the regular street by which Harley-Davidson Rzeszow dealership

8 - Southern Biker Magazine

is located. It was shut down for traffic for Maciej to attempt his record. While doing his burnout he had to merge onto another road, continue burning through a roundabout and he even threw in some flair when, while still doing the burnout, he jumped up and sat on his gas tank to continue the World Record assault. Chris Bienkiewicz of GOC said, “After the investigation of evidence materials provided by the organizers, Guinness World Records has officially approved the record and since July 2017 the title belongs to Maciej and our company.” This record was set on the new HarleyDavidson Street Rod with a 750cc engine. The previous record was set last year in the USA aboard a Victory with a bigger engine (1200 cc). The Harley-Davidson icon has a new feather in its cap… and it’s a World Record to boot. This event was organized by GOC/HarleyDavidson Rzeszow, the biggest H-D dealer in Poland and the Central-Eastern Europe together with Game Over Cycles (GOC), which is the custom motorcycle manufacturer owned by the dealership. You can visit our website and see the video of the new world record for the longest burnout at: www. southernbikermagazine.com.

Nooga Strong Memorial Ride 2017 By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy Photos by Frank Pate

T

wo years ago, the City of Chattanooga, Tennessee came under a terrorist attack when a man went on a shooting rampage killing five service members at the Marine recruiting station and the Naval Reserve Center. Four Marines and one Navy sailor were killed; Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, Sgt. Carson A. Holmquist, Lance Cpl. “Skip” Wells, and Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith. Even though rain was in the forecast, riders came together in July at Thunder Creek Harley-Davidson to honor those brave soldiers. Some riders traveled from as far as Massachusetts to attend this ride. Riders began gathering at 8am and registering at the Rolling Thunder TN2 table. When the order was given to begin, over 500 riders got on their motorcycles and rode out with police escort in route to the Chattanooga Memorial cemetery. There, standing at the cemetery entrance, was Marine SSGT Tim Chambers know as the “Saluting Marine” who salutes every year for those who ride to the wall on Memorial Day. Tears flowed during the ride and the presentation that took place at the cemetery. Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke and several other dignitaries attended the ride. Several riders returned to Thunder Creek H-D where they held a celebration of life for the Fallen 5 with live music, food and several vendors. All of the money raised from the ride benefited the Wreath’s Across America. When it comes to our soldiers, no one cares more than we do. Pride and humbleness will always reign in our hearts for our brave men and women of the Armed Forces. As Americans, we support and honor our soldiers every day, in life… and in death.

Munro’s 50th Anniversary By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

B

orn in New Zealand in 1899, James “Burt” Munro made motorcycle history in 1967 by setting a new official land speed record at 184.087 mph (296 km/h) in the Under 1000cc class, with unofficial top speed of 205.67 mph, when he raced his heavily self-modified 1920 Indian Scout Streamliner across the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Munro’s 1920 Indian Scout was a 600cc motorcycle with a factory top speed of 55mph. In order to reach his goal and with very limited means back then, he worked on his Munro Special day and night to get it to the level of performance needed to set records. Some innovations on the engine were light years ahead of their time. Munro started setting records in his native New Zealand and didn’t stop until reaching his dream, the Bonneville Flats Land Speed Record. His record still stands today. Burt Munro was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 2006, a tribute to the pursuit begun eight decades earlier. (You can read more on Burt Munro in the January 2010 issue of Southern Biker Magazine.) To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the record, Burt’s great-nephew Lee Munro will be attempting to recreate his great-uncle’s historic run. “My uncle John (Burt’s son) called me up the middle of last year to see if I’d be interested in riding an Indian in a speed trial,” Lee said in a recent interview. “I told him I’d ride anything

anywhere as long as it was put together correctly. I didn’t think anything more of it until he rang me up again last September and told me it was looking pretty positive and that Indian would be putting it together.” Lee will pilot a new purpose-built Indian Scout Streamliner that has gone from a current Scout stock engine of 1130cc to a re-bored 1300cc, along with other changes. Burt modified his bike on his own for 41 years and had 9 attempts before capturing the record. Indian and their team of seven engineers took nine months to reinvent this new Indian Streamliner, but their approach to building it to go as fast as possible was driven by the same three criteria as Burt Munro’s: add horsepower, cut weight, and improve aerodynamics. “My uncle Burt was a significant inspiration for my own racing career, and his appetite for speed is clearly a part of my DNA. I couldn’t be prouder to pilot my own Scout at Bonneville in honor of my Uncle and the 50th anniversary of his historic record” Lee Munro said in a recent interview. “The bike is an absolute dream to ride, and we’ve only been a few miles off Burt’s record. This is supposed to be a tribute run only, so it’s up to Indian to decide if they want to try to break the record this year…” Speed Week at Bonneville is August 12-18. Stay tuned into SBMag for a follow-up article to see if we indeed have a new World’s Fastest Indian. Additional Source: Indian Motorcycle

2017 Southern Backroads H.O.G. Rally By Smokin’ Joe Ball

T

he 2017 Southern Backroads H.O.G. Rally held in Cookeville, TN, hosted by H.O.G., marks the beginning of a new era in H.O.G rallies from Harley-Davidson. The new rally format replaces individual state rallies with multi-state regional rallies. Cookeville, Tennessee received the very first Regional HOG Rally and this city is just amazing. I think my friend Randy Gracy said it best, “Tennessee’s state capital is Nashville, the football headquarters is Knoxville, but the heart of Tennessee is in Cookeville.” This town has adopted the motorcycle culture and its citizens welcome you with open arms. You just don’t get this type of down home, good treatment wherever you may ride your motorcycle to. Well, I arrived at the host hotel (Holiday Inn Express & Suites) and the registration process was effortless and well organized. The registration package included a daily itinerary of activities for the rally and even dining and additional lodging locations. There were an abundance of daily guided rides as well as a 12 pack of self-guided rides. A nice addition to the regular poker runs was the Run to the Rally Passport. The idea is to collect points for visiting locations in the region throughout the rally.

Wednesday’s ride took us to the Brushy Mountain State Prison. We were given a tour of the now defunct prison where the infamous James Earl Ray was a resident. After the tour some of us went to Frozen Head State Park on the way back and others rode The Devil’s Triangle. At the Parking Lot Party we were rocked by The Outlaws. After the Meet ’N Greet Thursday morning with the Cookeville Police Department, our ride took us back in time to a 700 acre fully outfitted replica of an old Tennessee town, Hard Times USA. We were entertained with a “blast from the past” by The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band. On the way back we rode to Rock Island State Park. The City of Cookeville treated us by putting on a street

party at the Historic Westside. Everyone enjoyed the Slowest of the Slow and the Loud Pipes competitions. Later that evening at the Parking Lot Party Vinyl Radio took the stage to take us back with some great 70’s music. On Friday it was time to settle those grudges from last year in Buffalo Valley at the Middle TN Dragway. I guess the grudges will have to wait until next year as Mother Nature would have none of it and the racing was cancelled. We found a great place to eat, Bobby Qs, on the way back to watch some riders show off their incredible skills. If you ever want to be in awe of exceptional riders, check out a Riding (continued on page 18)

Tuesday we rode to the Cumberland Caverns to enjoy a concert series called Bluegrass Underground. After a ¼ mile walk, descending 333 feet below the surface, we arrived at the Volcano Room Stage where we enjoyed the bluegrass band, The Grascals. The Kick-Off Party was held at Boswell’s Country Roads Harley-Davidson followed by the Parking Lot Party back at the host hotel. After the Opening Ceremony, Confederate Railroad took the stage and provided a great performance.

Skills Competition some time. The Riding Skills Competition and Hog’s VS Pigs did not disappoint. Afterwards I still had some daylight to burn, so it was off to the Putnam County Fairgrounds to watch some PRO Flat Track Racing to finish off the day. Saturday started out wet but by 10AM the roads were already starting to dry. It was also the day to watch some “insane riders” at the Buffalo Valley AMA Pro All-Star Hillclimb. Not something I would ever want to do but it’s great to watch. After the closing ceremonies, Lipstick Blonde took the stage to end a great week of events and venues. Kudos to H.O.G., Southern Backroads H.O.G Rally Committee, Local Motor Officers, County Motor Officers and State Motor Officers for seamlessly putting on a great rally. Approximately 2400 people attended this year’s rally and I for one am looking forward to the 2018 Smoky Mountain H.O.G. Rally that will be held at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson in Maryville, TN.

Paul “Buster” Busuttil Opens Hanger 67 By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

O

ur usual go to place when we go to Panama City Beach has been Buster’s Beer & Baits for many good reasons. Namely, all my friends go there, but the owner of the establishment, Paul Busuttil, is a very big reason. He hangs out with me and my friends… and I mean… he can hang. Paul Busuttil or Buster as we all call him is a former Air Battle Manager with US Air Force where he served a 28-year career where he got his call sign “Buster.” He was instrumental in the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) and the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS). He completed six tours of duty in the Middle East (Afghanistan and Iraq), earlier spent time in Kosovo and then discovered the Florida Panhandle while stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base. During his time in the Air Force, Buster managed to attend night school where he added a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Emory Riddle to go with his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maryland. After the military, he purchased a going out of business liquor store and re-named it Buster’s Beer & Baits. It’s been great for Buster as he serves his regular customers drinks in the front and fishing bait in the back. For out-of-towners that discover this little piece of happiness, they soon become regulars too; just ask the entire group from Columbus, Georgia. He had a surf shop with a nice little restaurant next door but now has a small proprietor in the restaurant side and it is dubbed “Shore Dogs”. It is a great place for the best hot dogs on the beach and a lot

22 - Southern Biker Magazine

more, but something seemed to be missing. So, recently, Buster came up with an idea and he themed it around his military service. Hanger 67 was born at the old surf shop location next to Buster’s Beer & Baits and Panama City Beach residents love it. Decorating the inside with vintage airplane attire and custom painting, Buster has made another go to place on Panama City Beach. “It’s a bar that salutes all those who’ve served our country past and present”, Buster said. It also happened to be BB&B’s 5th anniversary so there was a huge party. My favorite bartender Carmin Baxter was slinging the best concoctions and live music by Sounds of Thunder & Scream Machine entertained everyone throughout the afternoon and evening. The SBMag Road Crew was well represented by Kim Norred, Michael Moffitt, Amber Rowe, Todd “Big Daddy” Stewart and I believe the Hundley’s and Sander’s couples snuck in under the radar. If you are looking for Buster’s light part of the world when you’re driving down Thomas Drive, just look for the big Navy Raptor Jet sign and you’ve arrived. Cheers…

American/Italian Combo? Harley-Davidson enters bid war for Ducati Could the Italian bike builder end up in the hands of the American Motorcycle Icon? By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

R

umors get started by those that think they know something, but when several sources like Fox News and Road & Track are bringing it to the forefront, maybe it’s time to let the cat out of the bag, so to speak. Here’s what I’ve been able to gather.

has tarnished its image and left it facing billions of euros in fines and settlements. A successful deal for Ducati might just alleviate some of that.

Reuters reports that Harley-Davidson and others were expected to place first bids for Ducati in late July (haven’t heard as of this publishing). Indian motorcycle firm Hero MotoCorp and TVS Motor Company initially expressed interest in Ducati but were put off by its possible price tag and decided to walk away, the sources said. German car maker BMW and Japanese motorcycle makers Honda and Suzuki have also decided against bidding for Ducati, sources close to the companies told Reuters. Ducati’s previous owner Investindustrial was also sent an information packet.

Volkswagen, Audi, Harley-Davidson, KKR and Bain Capital declined to comment. Bajaj, Investindustrial and Permira were not immediately available. SeekingAlpha.com states that the main contender is HarleyDavidson. Investindustrial bought a stake in Ducati before the financial crisis, subsequently taking control of the business before selling it to Audi in 2012. It is now looking to compete with heavyweight private equity firms and large industry players to regain control. “Ducati is a jewel, the sale of which is not supported by the labor representatives on Volkswagen’s supervisory board,” a spokesman for VW group’s works council said in an email.

Volkswagen, Europe’s largest carmaker, is seeking to move beyond an emissions-cheating scandal that

Reuters’ sources indicate VW is hoping to sell Ducati for about 1.5 billion euros (nearly $1.7 billion

26 - Southern Biker Magazine

USD), which would be a tidy profit from the $935 million price Audi paid for Ducati in 2012. They also reported that VW might hold onto Ducati until after this year’s EICMA Motorcycle Show, set to be held in Milan this November. Ducati isn’t just an Italian Sport bike manufacturer; it produces a wide variety of motorcycles; Adventure motorcycles, Sport Touring models, Café Racers, Scramblers, Vintage, Enduro motorcycles and more. This just might be the edge HarleyDavidson needs to get new and younger customers into its family of riders. SeekingAlpha.com stated, “We contacted the Motor Company and were awarded exactly what we expected: “Harley-Davidson does not comment on future speculations.” Our Ducati media rep has yet to return our calls.” We’ll stay on top of this and let you know if Harley-Davidson bids and wins the Italian Motorcycle company, Ducati’s bidding war.

Bike Shopping

Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

T

here are so many considerations when you’re bike shopping. So many people start with price but it ends up costing them more down-the-line. It might cost in comfort, in servicing your bike or customizing your bike. You might be the person who buys brand when the brand isn’t the best fit for you… So you have a name but you don’t have something that you really enjoy or that fits you. You might end up with a great price until you realize you’re going to need a custom seat because it’s so uncomfortable and the pipes are too quiet and you really need louder pipes and the bags just don’t hold enough. The difference in cheap chrome and good chrome can cost you but there’s nothing worse than peeling, pitted chrome before you know it.

There’s also where you buy from – dealers take care of their own. It doesn’t mean that you’ll have bad service but when you are a customer, you’re going to be a priority. If you’re a regular customer, you’re going to have even better service. You’ll get the extra care and the extra discounts. You’ll fly first-class instead of economy. It’s just the way things are so when you’re bike shopping, don’t just think about the bike. Who’s going to service it? Where are you going for custom parts? Who is going to really take care of you and your bike?

get a bike that they are scared of or they are so afraid they might mess it up that it hinders them in getting started. A lot of women quit before they really get started because they end up with a bike that’s not right for them. It’s like that pair of shoes that were a great deal but never felt right. They sit in the closet – just like the bike that ends up sitting in the garage. There’s a lot of things to take into consideration when you’re buying a bike – use the right equation for you.

Also, know what you’re really going to use it for – don’t over-buy, but don’t under-buy. In other words, if you know you want to take longer trips, don’t skimp on power, comfort and ride. If it’s your beginner bike, don’t buy your dream bike. Find something that fits, is decent mechanically, get your miles in and then go up. I’ve found so many women who

7th Annual OAA Bike Blessing

W

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

hat a great day it was to enjoy friendships and getting your bike blessed for the year as Preacher Morgan Clough and his staff at the OAA Outreach Center in Madisonville, Tennessee hosted their 7th Annual Bike Blessing event. This year’s event had a specific message and was to honor all law enforcement officers, fire fighters and EMS personnel; many of which came to get their riding season blessed on two wheels. After the bikes and riders were blessed, there was plenty of smoked pig to help draw those hungery motorcycle riders as well. There’s nothing like pig for a good meal and a full belly. Afterwards, riders threw their legs over their motorcycles and headed out on a Monroe County cross-country ride where everyone ended at the oldfashioned A&W Drive-In Restaurant in Madisonville TN. What great way to end a great day with friends.
