words from the publisher
Hey Folks,
Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! It's that time of year when we gather together and give thanks. We are thankful to all our loyal readers and advertisers for without you, we would not exist. We love to bring you the best of the motorcycle events and news each month and we look forward to a great 2017! We are very hopeful for a great New Year and a prosperous one for all of us. The past few years have been tough for most everyone we've talked with. This is also the time of year for toy runs. If you take a look at the toy runs listed in the back of this magazine, you will see a large number of them. We didn't have room to list all the ones we found. This is a growing epidemic I believe for the growing need to help underprivileged children and our Veterans in need. I've said this before but the general public looks first to the motorcycle community to come together and help out those in need. We are glad to step up and help those in need. It makes me proud and happy to be included in this fantastic group of people. Our wish this season is for those who need food, shelter and warm clothes, that they find and satisfy their needs and find faith in humanity and love for one another. We also wish for our country to be one and whole again; this division is not healthy for the well being of our country. Love one another and be nice to those who might not agree with your opinion or thoughts. We are a diverse and beautiful nation. 'Tis The Season'

Doing the Right Thing, is the Right Thing By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
P
eople get caught up in the hustle and bustle of their own lives, their business and their own family illnesses and problems. It leaves little time to concentrate, help or even talk with friends about their problems and the help they need. My wife and I are no different and we too get our schedules crammed with too much “Life” of our own to see through the forest at others that we indeed may be able to help or comfort. And we try our best to do just that. We know others are in need of help, understanding or even just a good ol’ conversation and cry about what is hurting them. And thus, we have many, many friends because we do take that time and effort. Sometimes doing the right thing… is the right thing. We recently received a gift from someone we didn’t even know who lives in Boca Raton, FL. He’s a famous water color artist named George Thompson. In short, we had helped his brother-n-law through a rough time (divorce), took the time to talk with him nearly daily, fixed meals for
him and had a shoulder for him to cry on from time to time. George wanted to do something for us to show his appreciation for us helping part of his family through a rough time. He and his wife said, “Thank you for helping my brother with all you have done and are doing for him. You are truly special people and he is blessed to know you both. Thank you so very much and we hope to meet you both very soon.” To the right you can see the 2’x3’ poster of my wife’s and my motorcycles… in watercolor. My wife and I both cried when we received this unannounced, surprise gift from someone we had never met. Remember, just when you think you’re too busy and can’t, there’s someone who really needs you… more. Everyone have a Very, Merry Christmas.

Post Hurricane Matthew, 24th Annual Biketoberfest draws over 100,000 Riders By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
O
ctober always signals the end of the riding season is approaching for most folks. It also always means…BIKETOBERFEST! Plans were made well in advance by thousands and thousands of riders and beach lovers alike, vendors, retail shop owners, bars, restaurants and event venues, but this year would be different. Just a week prior, what was a category 5 hurricane, Matthew slammed into Daytona Beach and the surrounding area with 100+ mph winds, storm surges over 15 feet and damages into the millions. Home owners and businesses alike were deeply affected and mostly on the beach side. Hotels were hit hard as were any businesses in the path of this powerful hurricane. Two days after it passed, the city of Daytona Beach, Daytona and all the surrounding areas assessed the damage and announced that they would be ready for Biketoberfest; and the call went out loudly, “Hurricane Matthew is gone and Biketoberfest is ON!” And all hands were on deck and at work 24/7 getting the entire area in shape for all the riders. And to say they did a great job would be a huge understatement. They did a TREMENDOUS job getting all the venues, ride routes and as much damaged fixed or temporarily handled so everyone could enjoy themselves. The citizens of Daytona Beach and Daytona, the workers, the volunteers…everyone pushed themselves to get power restored and streets cleaned from debris. As being one of those visitors coming into town to enjoy the event, all I can say is WOW! Restaurants were open, gas stations were open, dealers and retail shops were open and despite a little cosmetic damage here and there, all the riders we interviewed had a great time. I’m giving Daytona Beach and the surrounding area a “straight A+ report card”, period. Our SBMag Road Crew was there and except for a small section of A1A to Flagler being washed out, Biketoberfest went on just as it always has! Riders from around the US and countries around the world came roaring in for the last big event of the year on the East Coast. Though the numbers were in fact down from years prior, you couldn’t tell it on Main Street Friday and Saturday night. Elbow to elbow went folks from all walks of life to enjoy entertainment from top acts like Hayfire, Jasmine Cain, Jakyl, Mustang Sally, David Allen Coe and many more! Events (continued on page 10)

were scheduled all over the area including Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson, The saloons on US1, the Daytona International Speedway, the Beach Street vendor section, Indian of Daytona, the Cabbage Patch and more. Paul Zappitelli, owner of Zappi’s Italian Garden, said the numbers were in fact down, but his customers were enjoying themselves to the fullest. The Charlie Horse Restaurant was excited I did not attempt to break my crab leg eating total and just enjoyed myself with a table full of new friends I had just met. Jody at our host hotel, the Dream Inn, is currently totally renovating his place and getting it ready for the 2017 Daytona Bike Week (see his ad in this magazine) where we plan a whole week of fun at the pool and the beach. The special history mark 25th Annual Biketoberfest will be HUGE and special entertainers and events are being planned. It has been set for October 19-22, 2017 and for more information you can go to www.daytonabeach. com/biketoberfest/. Daytona Bike Week is coming to kick the year off and is scheduled for March 10-19, 2017 and for more information on it you can go to www.daytonachamber.com/ daytonabikeweek/. We hope to see you at both! Note: The Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Race has been rescheduled for the 2017 Bike Week, March 17-18 with Billy Lane of Choppers Inc. riding a 1913 Indian, Rick Petko (Discovery Channel’s American Chopper) riding a 1920 Indian, Jay Allen (motorcycle racer/proprietor, Broken Spoke Saloons) riding a 1913 Thor, Brittney Olsen (20th Century Racing) riding a 1923 Harley-Davidson racer, Buzz Kanter (publisher, American Iron Magazine) riding a 1915 Harley-Davidson, Shelley RossmeyerPepe (GM, Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson) riding a 1915 Harley-Davidson and Warren Lane (Atomic Metalsmith) riding a 1919 Indian.

Media Day
his year media day hosted by the Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau was held at the famous Daytona International Speedway. Lots of area dignitaries and VIPs were hand for the huge announcement and call sign for the event, “Hurricane Matthew is gone and Biketoberfest is on”! Shawn Abbatessa, Director of Market Development and his staff left no stone unturned and left no doubt in anyone’s mind that the area was ready for everyone coming for the event. Event sponsors, motorcycle industry individuals, local law enforcement, city politicians and others reiterated that Daytona had done everything to get the city ready and will still be working to keep their visitors happy.

Honda Announces the CRF250L Rally By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
L
istening to their customers and the changing market and inspired by the factory CRF450 Rally machine raced in the Dakar by Team HRC, Honda has introduced their all new CRF250L Rally for those riders begging for a light weight adventure motorcycle that is able to go off road at a moment’s notice. They are following in the footsteps of their own huge success with the CRF1000L Africa Twin and have taken the CRF250L and enhanced it with several upgrades. It took the same 249cc engine and added the following: a larger throttle body (38mm), better performance air flow with an updated air-box and air intake, a larger-diameter head pipe and new muffler, a new ECU that will result in better throttle response and more low- and mid-range power. There’s more ground clearance and the suspension was given a boost with more travel for those off-road challenges using 43mm inverted forks and Honda’s ProLink rear suspension. Braking in those high-performance areas are solved with larger front disc brakes and ABS. A larger 2.7-gallon fuel tank has been added so longer distance riding is no longer a problem. Wider body plastic and a newly designed windscreen adds to the comfort of the motorcycles over-all design. A new digital dash has been integrated with a new dual asymmetric LED headlight as well as new LED signal lights.

“We’re pleased to announce this exciting new CRF250L Rally for 2017,” said Lee Edmunds, Manager of Motorcycle Marketing Communications at American Honda. “Adventure touring continues to grow in popularity, and our customers have shown that small-displacement motorcycles can be extremely effective in this application, whether that means making epic journeys or the daily urban commute. We really wanted to build on the capabilities of the CRF250L and open up new opportunities for riders both young and old, and the CRF250 Rally brings the spirit of rally-raid racing to every ride.” It is clear that this CRF is aimed at attracting new riders to the sport and will be available in March of 2017. Orders are now being taken so get your deposit on these machines because they will not last on that sales floor.

Thunder Beach Hosts Largest Crowd in Years By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
D
ue to the damage from Hurricane Matthew in Daytona Beach for Biketoberfest, hundreds of visitors that were headed to Daytona for the 2016 Biketoberfest event changed their plans and headed to the 2016 Autumn Thunder Beach Rally. When you add those numbers to an already huge, successful event, you get a record number of attendees and boy was it fun! Thousands of people from all over the country (and other countries too) flocked to the gulf coast to rock with the huge assortment of entertainment, take in the 75-degree perfect weather and ride with the beach in their eyes and the sun on their back (some even in shorts and flip flops). Top headlining acts like the Marshal Tucker Band, the Outlaws, the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Mustang Sally, the Michael Allman Band, Jasmine Cain and others rocked the

stages like no other. They packed all the venues especially the Aaron Bessant Park where the major concerts were held. The SBMag Crew got VIP treatment from the folks at Thunder Beach Productions and needless to say, we enjoyed every minute of it. Known as “The Most Biker Friendly Free Rally In The U.S.”, this Thunder Beach Rally was off the chain! Hotels were packed, restaurants were at capacity every day and motorcycles were everywhere. Several businesses were pleasantly surprised and loved the extra customers that brought the area several million dollars for the fall rally. The weather again cooperated with days and nights just perfect for riding and enjoying the Florida scenery. Frank Brown Park, PCB Harley-Davidson, Hammerhead Fred’s, Sharky’s, the Wicked
Wheel and Pier Park along with a host of businesses filled their venues every day and night with riders. We frequented some of our favorite establishments like Buster Beer & Bait, Ms Newbie’s, Pineapple Willy’s and the Salty Goat Saloon. While we didn’t need them for a motorcycle rescue this trip, Bryan and his staff at SIK Cycles were there to take care of us if needed. The Ms. Thunder Beach bikini contest had one of the most highly contested events I’ve seen in years. There were no looser, only four girls standing together with one holding the title. This year’s Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show was HUGE! Over 50 motorcycles entered to win the coveted trophies. With every class filled and the radical class with 20+ custom creations in it, we definitely had our work cut out for us judging the bikes. It was definitely a huge task to name a winner but one was crowned the last night of the event. Custom trophies and hundreds of dollars in prizes were awarded to individuals from all over the country. The end of the show was highlighted with the presentation of the Thunder Beach Championship Belts by our presenting sponsor Bob McNally with LawBike.com for the Editor’s Choice and the Peoples Champion where we had a record number 550+ people vote for their favorite motorcycle. It was tough to decide on many classes but the three-judge panel made their choices and the results were as followed:

We would like to thank our sponsors: LawBike. com, Fountain City Jewelers, Buster’s Beer & Bait, Scootershine, Raci Babi, Custom Dynamics, SiK, The Wicked Wheel, and Dat Cajun Place for their support and donation of awesome prizes. We would also like to thank our support staff for all their help with the bike show. We couldn’t have done this great show without their help: Angel Rodgers, Amber Rowe, Todd Stewart, Julie Gardner and her boyfriend Jim. We enjoyed the rest of the day with friends and prepared to head for home the next day. Before leaving we wished everyone traveling a safe ride home, all of our PCB friends a “See You Later” and hope to see them all again soon. This was the most enjoyable trip we have been on so far and look forward to the spring rally coming May 3-7, 2017. The spring 2017 bike show date is May 6 where we will once again have custom made surfboard trophies and custom painted six-foot surfboards for the Best of Thunder Beach so mark your calendar and plan now! And remember when buying merchandise and going to these Panama City events, if it doesn’t say Thunder Beach, it’s not the real thing. See you there!

Soldiers & Riders Support Hospitalized Children at Christmastime By the Mag Man, Randy Gracy
T
he 2016 Tennessee National Guard Toy Run began at Quaker Steak & Lube in Knoxville, Tennessee on a very cold day. With the wildfires raging around East Tennessee and even though the numbers of riders were down from years prior, it did not stop the enthusiasm from all who attended to raise funds for the children at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital who are patients at Christmastime. This event gives the Soldiers and Airmen of the TNNG a chance to give back to their community and to fellow guardsmen who may be injured due to combat and/or may not be able to afford Christmas for their families. Yes, we have soldiers and their families in need at Christmastime.
Kristin & I are so honored to host this event every year and look forward to next year’s event that is beginning to be planned this week. After giving so much, our very own soldiers are giving back to their community in a big way and I’m humbled to be able to help in a small way. A huge “Thank You” to all our very generous sponsors, including our presenting sponsor The Garza Law Firm, and to Quaker Steak & Lube of Knoxville, Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson, Smokey Mountain Biker Gear, Scootershine LED Lighting, Red Knights, Triple R, Tellico Biker Rally, Fountain City Jewelers, UKoala Handbags, Schraders Cycle Center who without them, this event could not be possible.
That’s why this event is so important and with the help of many riders from the area and as far away as Chattanooga, Nashville and the Tri-Cities, hundreds of dollars in toys and funds were raised for both charities.
“HUA” to all those of the TNNG, God Bless and Thank You!
The escorted ride by Knox County Sheriff’s Office-Tango Squad took the riders from Quaker Steak & Lube across the Tennessee River, through some country backroads and ended to Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson where the riders rode under a huge, beautiful American Flag with the help of the Alcoa and Maryville Fire Departments. At The Shed, riders enjoyed outbidding each other on many awesome auction items, receiving cool door prizes and listening to Exit Sixty band on stage to entertain them all. We appreciate Exit Sixty for donating their time. “Helping children in need, especially at Christmas and being in the hospital, not at home like the rest of us; what better way to spend our day than to be here and help”, said Rick Adams who rode here with his girlfriend Barbara Gordon from Nashville, TN for the event (they even helped with lining up the bikes). Rick continued, “If we can make those children feel a little better while they’re in the hospital, then we will have done a good job.” We’ll be delivering these and other presents to the children at the hospital right before Christmas and it should be a very giving day indeed. We hope you can join us and Santa that day too.

A Salute to Oldest Active H-D Dealer, a World War II Marine Vet
S
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
tarting in the factory H-D school in 1939, Grover Sassaman, now 95, inked a deal to be a dealer in Indiana by Arthur Davidson. In 1947 he relocated to Lakeland, Florida and named his dealership Sassaman’s Motorcycle Co. In 1957 he relocated to Macon, Georgia where he enjoys riding these new Milwalkee Eight machines.
Grover served in the Black Sheep Squadron in World War II as one of Pappy Boyington’s mechanics. At one point in the war he even advised General Douglas MacArthur (on directions to the head). In 1945 Grover was awarded a Purple Heart after receiving shrapnel from a bomb dropped by a Japanese plane on the Solomon Islands. He still carries it in his body. “I enjoy talking to my customers,” he said as he sat in a lounge area among the many gleaming bikes in the showroom. “I have customers who come from everywhere. They want to meet me. They say I’m a legend, but I tell them I’m just Grover.”
HISTORY
William Johnson, First African-American Harley-Davidson Dealer
W
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
illiam B. Johnson or Wild Bill as he was known by some, was highlighted in the miniseries “Harley and the Davidsons.” Johnson, the first African-American AMA member and rider licensed to compete in national racing events (only if he registered as an American Indian), was also the first African American Harley-Davidson who signed dealership papers with H-D in the twenties in Somers, N.Y., and has inspired other AfricanAmericans in the motorcycle culture. Johnson had been a chauffeur and handyman who converted a blacksmith shop on his property into Johnson’s Harley-Davidson where he operated the business for 60 years. “Some of the first men of color to bond over HarleyDavidson motorcycles were soldiers riding in the name of their country. Some of the first Black bikers in post-war America were soldiers who were assigned to military police positions where they were responsible for monitoring the “colored” sections of segregated bases during World War II. They patrolled on bikes”, officials at Harley-Davidson said. This is a tribute to Johnson who died at 95 years of age in 1985 and who also is enshrined in the HarleyDavidson museum in Milwaukee, WI.

Eli Tomac Wins the 2016 Monster Energy Cup By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
M
onster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac won his sponsors event and the first Monster Energy Cup Championship of his career taking home a whopping $100,000 in prize money. Smartop MotoConcepts Racing’s Cameron Mcadoo swept both Toyota holeshots in the Amateur All-Star Class and walked away with a brand-new Toyota Tacoma and the overall win. Kawasaki’s Stilez Robertson outdueled the competition in a dramatic finish to win the Supermini Class. Tomac taking finishes of 2nd, 1st and a 4th had the best average and takes home the championship. In the second race, Roczen went down hard and finishing 21st in that race left him out of contention for a podium even though he won the first and the third race. “I came in with a little bit too much momentum on the start and it cost me the holeshot,” said Tomac. “It was unfortunate to see Ken [Roczen] go down, we laid down a quick pace early and yoyo’d each other back and forth.” Chad Reed still has what it takes and powered his way to the Toyota holeshot in the third and final Monster Energy Cup Class Main Event of the night, but made a mistake and crashed. Dungey finished second in the final totals and showed his Supercross Championship form of old. Marvin Musquin improved each race and is without a doubt, a contender for the Monster Energy Supercross title this year.
Monster Energy Cup Class Results (Race #1, #2, #3) 1. Eli Tomac, Cortez, CO, Kawasaki (2-1-4) 2. Ryan Dungey, Clermont, FL, KTM (3-2-3) 3. Marvin Musquin, Corona, CA., (4-3-2) 4. Sound Advice from Your Attorney
T
he holidays are upon us. You and your family are traveling all over the place, to work, holiday parties, family members' houses, and going out with friends shopping. With so many people on theh road, the more likely the unthinkable might happen: you or a family member gets into an accident. Here are a few tips if the unthinkable happens: 1, If you are not seriously injured, turn your hazard lights on and if your vehicle is still operational, move it to a safe place, out of the flow of traffic.
Marcos Garza
2. If you're able to, check on the others involved, even if you are not at fault. This is a very traumatic and upsetting situation, however being kind and courteous to everyone involved will go a long way in the ultimate resolution in your claim.
Tim Smith

3. Call 911. If you or someone else is injured, even if it appears relatively minor, it is imperative that EMS checks you out. Something minor can turn serious, just nip it in the bud instead of letting it sneak up and bite you later. Even if no one is injured, it's important to report the accident as most insurance companies will need the accident report to resolve your claim. Now be sure not to admit fault. The police will be sure to question everyone involved and any witnesses that might be around to objectively determine what happened and who is at fault. Once you file your claim, your insurance company will also conduct a fault evaluation. 4. Trade and gather information. Get the name of the drive and any of the passengers. Trade insurance information and copy down the license plate number, along with the make and model of the vehicle. If there are any witnesses, get their contact information; you might need their help later to give their account of what happened. Take pictures. Pictures will help you tell your side of the story later. Also, be sure to get the name(s) and badge number(s) of the officer(s) that respond to your accident. This will help you retrieve the accident repott later. 5. Report the accident to your insurance company. You don't have to do this while waiting at the scene, but it is important to start your claim sooner rather than later. Starting your claims process will speed up your car getting fixed and put money back in your pocket for medical expenses you might incur. What about an out-of-state accident? Do everything above, but before you travel out-of-state familiarize yourself with the laws of that state. Each state is different and something legal in Tennessee might not be legal in another state, such as talking on your cell phone. No matter what, in state or out-of-state, remember to call your local at home attorney after the accident. Your local lattorney can guide you through the turmoil of having an accident, regardless of whether you're not at fault or at fault. If you're out of state, don't call an unknown attorney, call your local attorney and let him help you find someone who will look out for you and your family. Your local attorney will answer any questions you have, help guide you through the insurance process, and help you recover what your insurance company won't get back for you. Marcos Garza is the owner of the Garza Law Firm, PLLC, a Tennessee Law Firm dedicated to the full service of motorcyclists, bikers, cruiser and crotch rocket riders across the state. Please direct all comments and follow up questions to him at (865) 540-8300 or mgarza@garzalaw.com.

Riding in the Rain T
his is my rain dance for the Southeast that's dealing with drought. You need some rain, so I thought I would write about it to get expectations up. If you've ridden at all, you've ridden in the rain. In Florida, we get to experience quite a bit of it. With the rain, we get what we call black ice. That's when the oil and grease gets drawn up by the rain and produces a slick that is as slippery as ice. It's one of the reasons to not ride in the middle of the lane whether it's raining or not because that's where it builds up the most. One of the main things you want to do when riding in rain, especially if there is standing water on the road, is to maintain a slow and safe speed. Too slow can be as dangerous as too fast, depending on how much water you are motoring through. It's also very important to lengthen your traveling distance behind other vehicles. You don't want to have to slam on your brakes in the rain and need a good safe stopping distance. You also want to use a little more rear brake than normal. You don't want that front wheel to start sliding.
Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.
Break gently and pump your brakes slowly when stopping. It's also important to get on your rain gear before you get wet if possible. It never feels good to be wet and soggy under the rain gear. I admit there's a few times I've pulled over and put on gear to have a storm move around and then have to take everything off. But riding dry is so much more comfortable. If it's hot, it's like a steam room under your rain gear and if it's cold, you're just colder. The more comfortable you are the more relaxed you are, which helps you ride safer. High visibility gear is important also so you're visible to motorists. Either purchase gear in high visibility colors or get a high visibility vest to throw on over your gear. Use rain protective product on your windshield, visor and/or goggles. Every bit helps. And then if you've got the time and you can find a safe place to pull off, it never hurts to sit a storm out. So get ready, believe for some rain and then instead of dancing in the rain - go for a ride!
A Tribute
We all run across special people in life and Matt Russ was one of those people. I met Matt at the ROAR dealership. Jacki, my assistant said, “You’ve got to meet this kid. He was so persistent and had just finished a motorcycle training program.” I finally agreed to meet with him and was definitely impressed. He had an engaging personality and seemed hungry to learn and grow. I tested him out by making him intern for a while and then hired him as a full-time tech. Matt loved motorcycles. He loved working on them and riding them. (Sometimes too fast, but I was hardly one to talk.) It wasn’t long before I wondered if I had hired an employee or found another son. There were times we had to work through issues and deal with things. I got to know Matt’s background and I knew he was a miracle. The women who shopped at ROAR loved Matt and the men all respected him. We always teased him because he wore his work. Most days, he had some kind of grease or black smeared somewhere. He was a hard worker and went the extra mile. As a team, we laughed together, cried together, fought fires together, and became what we called the ROAR Family. The hardest thing I had to do when I knew it was time to close the dealership was to break-up those relationships. I worked hard at helping everyone get placed and tried to stay in touch as best I could. Matt eventually moved out of the area. He had used drugs as a teenager and sadly ended up returning to the habit. Matt died from an over-dose on November 13, 2016. He was only 25. He will be missed by his family, friends and the riding community. We love you, Matt!
