Grandfather’s Indian in the Attic
Story submitted to Indian Motorcycles by: Annette Van Essen
I
n June 1959 my grandfather spotted a motorcycle in an old garden shed in DeBilt, Netherlands. Thinking it was a Harley he alerted my father who had owned a Harley before and was looking for another bike. My father bought what turned out to be an Indian 741B for a song (20 Dutch Guilders, less than $ 12.50!!). The previous owner had bought the bike in 1953 when it was still in the army version. This owner had been in a crash and the bike was in a bad state of repair. Between 1959 and 2009 my father had to divide his time between family, work and the Indian (not necessarily in this order ;-) ) to restore the bike and converted it into a civilian version. It is unclear how the Indian ended up in The Netherlands; it may well have been left behind in Europe after the Second World War. The Indian has always been (and still is) a part of our family history. I can remember the Indian being craned out of the attic (don’t ask why) where my father had started restoring

the bike. Some days we could not have dinner at the table as my father was lacing the spokes in the wheel rims...One day we caught him on the bike (in the attic, still without the engine) pretending he was riding it, doing his own version of the potato sound! When he came home on the bike, we kids would fight over ‘the spin around the block’ sitting on the fuel tank in front of dad. Those days you were still allowed to do fun things like that, nowadays child protection would get involved! He of course always maintained a very moderate speed in first gear. Sitting on the bike as a child you had to choose; either your right or left hand on the handle bar, it was too wide to hold on to both sides. It was good to see the next generation having the same problem when they sat on the bike with their grandfather. In 1986 we had our wedding pictures taken on the bike. My father has taken part in many veteran motorcycle rallies and won prizes at times. Last year, on his 80th birthday he decided that the time had come to retire the bike, it is now well wrapped up sitting in his garage gathering dust but we suspect that every now and again he sneaks to the garage and pretends to ride it for we recog-
nize the familiar sounds coming out of the garage, sounds that remind us of the bygone days when the bike was still in attic!

AHDRA Shuts Down Operations
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
t’s a sad day in the motorcycle industry. In the wake of the AMA Drag Racing Association closing a few years back, now my favorite drag racing sanction closes its operations for good. Craig Tharpe, owner of the All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) sent out emails and phone calls to staff, racers and tracks informing them that the 2013 season has officially been canceled. Southern Biker Magazine was a proud sponsor of this sanctioning body and was looking to get further involved in the series as well as other racing series in the form of sponsorship. But that is a foregone conclusion as Harley-Davidson has switched its primary drag racing money to the NHRA (who has begun its own Screamin’ Eagle series) and RUSH Exhausts, another primary sponsor of AHDRA, informed Craig they would not be returning for the 2013 season. I look back over the many years of going to and covering the AHDRA races over the past 20 some odd years and recall so many great memories; meeting and getting to know the racers, camping next to the race guys in the pits, hanging out by camp fires with everyone, the talk of racing and drag bikes into the late night, the days of racing in the staggering heat, the other track photographers......everything. Here’s a memory I swore I’d never tell. My first time on the track as an
10 - Southern Biker Magazine
official photographer, some 12 years ago, taking photos of the Nitro Top Fuel bikes, I set up behind a nitro bike to get that perfect, rear wheel burnout shot. Jerry, long time AHDRA photographer and friend was coming to get me out of the way, when the others grabbed him and said, “Hold on, he has to learn.” Needless to say, the bikes lit up, the smoke flowed and so did the nitrous.... Right up my nose, into my lungs, into my eyes, I wiped my face and.... voulaaah, instant man with a black face that can’t breathe. It’s only funny now as I’ve seen about 5 others go through the same thing (It’s kind of a photographer thing I’ve gathered, but its funny when it’s someone else). And it’s still one of many great memories from the AHDRA race series. I will miss everyone that made this series my favorite on of all. Here’s part of the official announcement: AHDRA Official Announcement from Craig Tharpe I don’t really know where to start. This is one of the toughest things I have ever had to do. I guess the best thing to do is just get it out of the way. The 2013 AHDRA Championship Points Series is cancelled. I am sorry for holding everyone up, but there was potential to work this out and I wanted to give it the best shot. Unfortunately, it did not materialize. With our declining sponsorship support, most likely driven by our declining racer and
spectator attendance, most likely driven by our crappy economy, we are unable to plan a budget that has a positive bottom line. This would be the 5th year of negative cash flow for AHDRA and she just can’t stand it financially. Although they were committed to remaining as a presenting AHDRA sponsor for 2013, Harley-Davidson is moving most of its sponsor

ship spending to the NHRA’s Sportsman series. Last week’s news from the folks at Rush Racing Products, that they would not be continuing their sponsorship at AHDRA, was the final blow. These were our two largest sponsors and contributed the lion’s share of sponsor revenue for AHDRA.....without the level of support from Harley-Davidson and Rush; we can’t make the numbers work. I have lived and breathed Harley Drag Racing for the past 14 years, and have met some of the finest people I have ever known. You inspired me and kept me going through the good times and the rough times........ Sincerely, Craig Tharpe
AHDRA celebrated its 35th year of drag racing last year and our Southern Biker Magazine sponsored “Old Guys Do Rule Racing” Pro Stock drag bike ridden by Tom Caldwell won the 2012 championship; Tom’s forth but our very first ever. He also broke a couple of records in the process. At a reception to announce our new website, www.southernbikermagazine. com, Tom surprised us and presented Kristin and I with a #1 plate to commemorate his great season. We are so honored to be a part of and to be a sponsor of the AHDRA series and wish great times to come for everyone involved with these events.

he 2013 AMA Monster Energy Supercross series is underway and after 2 rounds, it’s any ones race. The depth and competition is at an all time high as 10 winners and 4 champions stack the 450SX class. The resurgence of Davi Millsaps has been the surprise of the new season. The current points leader has shown that his past flashes of brilliance are now on high beam and he is a threat for the title. The former amateur Suzuki prodigy is back on his familiar bike and came out swinging at Anaheim with a hard earned victory. The duo of Trey Canard and Justin Barcia has put Team Muscle Milk Honda back into title contention. Canard’s story of overcoming adversity and climbing his way back to the podium
2013 Supercross Season; Most Talented Field Ever is one of the greatest in sports history! Barcia exploded onto the professional scene in 2009, and took the victory in just his 2nd 450SX race ever at round 2. James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto are working through injuries and set up issues so far in 2013. The 2 title combatants are sitting in 7th and 9th place in points respectively. Villopoto suffered from multiple crashes in the opening rounds that are very uncharacteristic of him. Stewart tweaked his knee without even crashing and is riding through pain to salvage as many points as he can. It’s a long series and the title combatants will find their groove as champions always do. The 250SX class is proving as a launching platform for Geico Honda’s
Eli Tomac. He has showcased such dominant performances that people are already predicting a perfect sweep for the young rider. His biggest threat comes from Germany’s Ken Roczen. The Red Bull KTM rider is in his 3rd season of Supercross and finishing 2nd is not going to sit well with him. If anyone can stop the ‘Tomac Train’, it’s him. Monster Energy Pro Circuit rider Martin Davalos overcame a horrendous crash in Phoenix to get 3rd. Former 250SX winners Cole Seely and Ryan Sipes are using their experience and consistency to start the season strong, while Zach Osborne is back from contesting the FIM WORLD GP and rounds out the top 5. We are in store for a great season of Monster Energy Supercross. Check your local listings of Speed, and CBS Sports to tune into the latest events.

Riding Etiquette in Group Rides
By Ms Mag Man, Kristin Gracy
ften times my husband or girlfriends and I ride in benefits and events all over the southeast. Rider information, route knowledge and riding formation are critical components when riding in groups of two or more motorcycles. Most rides are ridden in a staggered formation. A Staggered formation is where the lead rider is positioned on the left side of a single lane; the next rider is positioned on the right side of the lane and continues back as additional riders are added to the group. We have attended many, many group rides where instructions are given to ride in a staggered formation. Ride leaders assume participants know what staggered formation means unless someone asks. When we get out on the road, it never fails that one or several riders ride directly behind the motorcycle in front of them. This causes confusion and is not a safe riding method which can cause a serious accident and injuries. No one wants to be responsible for causing that to happen to anyone. When a rider peels off and leaves the pack, fill in that vacated space following the staggered formation. When turning, stay in your lane side. Don’t change from the left side of the lane to the right side of the lane unless there is an obstacle in the road. Leave a safe distance between you and the motorcycle in front of you. A general rule of thumb is one car length per 10 mph. On rides, we have seen the public standing on the street side waving to all the passing motorcycles and one person hits the brakes and it causes an accordion effect and possibly, a rear end collision. Don’t be distracted from sights like these; pay attention to what’s going on in front of you. On the other side of that coin, don’t allow a huge gap between you and the bike in front of you, especially if it is a police escorted ride. Cars will inevitably
22 - Southern Biker Magazine
cut in if they have 1/2 the space of their car to squeeze in and will cause all sorts of havoc. If someone in front of you is allowing a huge gap to occur, pass them safely. They may not be comfortable riding in a pack after all. We have learned that hand signals used in combination with signal lights are the best and most effective way of letting everyone around you know what you intend to do. Sometimes the blinker bulbs are rather dim and don’t get our attention effectively. Most people are looking forward and ahead, not down where the blinkers are on most bikes. Hand signals are typically in our line of sight and quickly noticed. It takes some getting used to doing this, but it can help avoid an accident. If the rider behind you doesn’t acknowledge your intent to turn (especially right hand turns) by turning on their turn signal, DON’T TURN! Make sure everyone in your group understands that
they have a responsibility to the group by acknowledging the turning signals. Riders also have a responsibility to pass down the signals, especially if there is a road hazard. Point it out to the person behind you. See diagram for examples of hand signals. Communicating with CBs and other headsets are a great way to travel in groups especially if someone is in distress. It’s a good idea for the last rider (tail gunner) and the lead rider to have communication between each other. If someone goes down or the pack gets separated at a traffic signal, the tail gunner can notify the lead rider. Finally, if you are a new rider and want to get some experience riding in a group, ask some of your riding buddies to help you out before attempting a public group ride. We all want to help each other out; we all had to start somewhere! Have a plan and follow it and keep your knees in the breeze! February, 2013

Wild Hog Publications Launches New Website www.SouthernBikerMagazine.com
outhern Biker Magazine launched its brand new website a reception held the residence of Joe Ball. Several friends, staff and Southern Biker Magazine customers attended the reception. AS everyone gathered, a countdown commenced and as I got to one,
Joe Ball of Joe Ball Consultant’s, who built the site, pushed the final buttons and on an 80 inch HD TV screen, the website came to life. Many hours went into the building of this project and Southern Biker Magazine now has new and better ways for its readers to post and get information about rides, events and upcoming rallies. Their customers will have a new avenue to reach those on-line customers they are wanting as well.
A HUGE “Thank You” went to Joe Ball and all his time put into the building and producing this great product. Southern Biker Magazine sponsored “Old Guys Do Rule Racing” Pro Stock drag bike ridden by Tom Caldwell who won the 2012 championship; Tom’s forth championship but the magazine’s very first ever. At the reception Tom surprised us and presented Kristin and Randy Gracy with a #1 plate to commemorate his great season.

I
t was dreary day, overcast, drizzle, wet and chilly, but the ride was worth it; 128 miles to Palmer to honor a hero that after missing for 62 years finally was brought home. PFC Glenn Shely Schoenmann was serving with Company M, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry, United States Army during the battle at Chosin Reservoir in North Korea, November 1950. It was on the 28th day of that cold, frozen November that his unit was overrun by an estimated 300,000 Chinese which had come to the rescue of North Korea. The American and South Korean forces had fought back from nearly being driven off the South Korean peninsula as the North Koreans had invaded an unprepared South in an effort to unite the entire country under communist rule. The defenders were gathered into a small defense perimeter at Pusan until General McArthur pulled off one of the most daring gambles of modern warfare. He landed a force at Inchon Harbor near the 38th parallel to cut off the supply lines to the Northern forces that until that time, held the upper hand. The Americans along with their South Korean partners fought back and after taking back Seoul, continued north all the way to the Manchurian border. It was there that then President Truman ordered a halt to the advance and the Chinese intervention began pushing the American forces back. That famous battle which was the turning point was at the Chosin Reservoir. Private First Class Glenn Schoenmann, hunkered down in his frozen fox hole was either not informed or was unable to respond to the order to fall back, when he was captured and taken prisoner. He was born November 12th, 1930 in Palmer TN to William Elbert and Minnie Agnes Tate Schoenmann. His Father, William, worked at the lumber camps in Palmer and Barker Cove and eventually moved to Werner Farm in

Tracy City where Glenn grew up. He worked the farm with his sister and his three brothers. Glenn attended Shook School until he enlisted in the military. Although he was presumed killed during captivity, he was carried as MIA (Missing in Action) until his remains were returned to a United Nations search team in 2004 at which time he was transferred to Hawaii for identification. Through DNA testing, his family was located and in 2012 plans were made for his return. His remains were brought to Nashville, and with an escort of veteran organizations, on Thursday, January 10th, a motorcade brought him to Palmer. On January 11th, visitation was held at Layne Funeral Home. On January 12th, he was brought to Grundy County High School for his funeral. As I rode into town, I saw American flags being flown from every house window, porch, business entrance, cars, trucks and anywhere a flag could stand. The flags on poles were at half mast. The funeral was attended by approximately 250 people from Grundy County and the surrounding towns. Many veteran motorcycle riding organizations and others were in attendance. The Sequatchie County Honor Guard paid their respects by presenting plaques to the Schoenmann surviving family members. Those in attendance were representatives from Governor Haslam’s office, Lt. Governor Ramsey’s office, Many-Bears Grinder, Tennessee Veterans Affairs Commissioner as well as other dignitaries. Of the speakers that were present, another survivor of that war and that battle was a retired Lt. Colonel that flew air support in a B26 for air cover for the retreating troops on the ground. He spoke of the weather conditions at that time. “It was 30 degrees below -0- . The ground was frozen and the troops were not outfitted with protective clothing for that kind
of weather. They suffered from frost bite and at night were unable to light fires as the glow would disclose their positions to the enemy. Conditions were unbearable.” Glenn was buried at Browns Chapel Cemetery, Palmer, TN on January 12, 2012.

Food for Thought
Cruze Farm Buttermilk Hush Puppies with Bentons
by Barry Duncan
Bread of Heaven I cannot take credit for finding this special place, but I can tell you how great the food and the people are. Bread of Heaven is located at 1366 N Wright Road in Alcoa, TN. It’s about a mile from Hunt Road. Bread of Heaven is owned and operated by Michael “The Main Ingredient” Colquitt. He serves up home cooked soul food that will bust your belt loose! The buffet cost is $10 and if you leave hungry, there’s no one to blame but yourself. You’ll find fried chicken wings, BBQ Pork, smoked chicken thighs, BBQ chicken, smoked sausage, baked beans, green beans, collard greens, sweet potatoes, fresh cut fries, mac & cheese, corn, dressing, cornbread, rolls and his famous banana pudding. Bread of Heaven is open M-F 11a-2p, Thursday night 5p-8p and the first Sunday of each month 11a-4p. Check out their website at www.breadofheavencatering.com. Save me a seat!
1 1/2 cups Shelton Farms white cornmeal 1/3 cup flour 2 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 Cruze Farm Buttermilk 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped 1⁄2 cup Bentons Country Ham, diced 1 egg Heat oil in a heavy skillet (about 2- 2 1/2 inches of oil) until hot. Beat the egg and then mix in the remaining ingredients. Make sure that your dry ingredients are all moist. Using a tablespoon, drop balls of batter into the hot oil, about 2 inches long by 1 inch thick. NOTE: I usually only cook about 4 or 5 at a time. These should float in the hot oil, but not be covered by it. You will need to turn these as they cook. Fry until they are a golden brown and then drain them on paper towels. Serve with Spicy BBQ Sauce
