words from the publisher
Hello Folks, We have some good news to announce! My husband and I have been producing this motorcycle magazine for the last eight years and we love every minute of it. It’s been a rewarding experience and trying sometimes. We appreciate feedback from everyone and it makes us happy when we hear we are doing a great job. We will still be doing what we have always done for the magazine and will continue to help it grow and prosper; however, I have added an additional title as an Affiliate Broker with Tellico Mountain Realty in beautiful Tellico Plains,TN.This is a new and exciting chapter and we look forward to what the future holds. If you are looking to buy or sell in our area, give me a call or stop by. The events in my husband’s life over the last month or so have left him ex-hausted and humbled. God Almighty knows what he has been through and is still feeling today. He lost his father a lot sooner than expected. He regrets not getting to spend quality time with him in the last few days that he thought he had. His mind wonders about time he should have spent before that, at least calling him. Saying that, please tell your family and friends today how much they mean to you and make sure to talk and to go see them. As we get older, death finds our friends, our riding buddies and our family sooner that we expect. Try to avoid having the regret that you wish you would have said more or spent more time with them. Many events are heading our way in the southeast: Biketoberfest, Thunder Beach, Barry’s Outer Banks Bike Show, Maggie Valley Rallies, CHEROKEE returns to North Carolina, the remembrance rides for 9/11 and many more. Make plans to get in on some of these and take some friends with you. It’s always better when we say, “The more, the merrier!” As you go through this season, keep that two-wheel machine in shape by doing regular maintenance. If you can’t do it yourself, take it to your favorite dealership or independent service guy. Make sure you do your best not to end up stranded.

2018 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Schedule By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy The 2018 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Schedule has been announced and a lot of changes have been made. Dropped from the schedule is Toronto, Canada which was the only stop outside the United States and signaled the halfway point. That spot is now occupied by Daytona who will now kick-off the last half of the season. Also gone is East Rutherford, NJ and Detroit Michigan. Prior years have seen a West Coast allegiance in California and Arizona. Round 2 will now be NGR Stadium in Houston. 2015 was the last time Supercross ran in Houston. After three west coast rounds in Glendale, Oakland, and San Diego, the series returns to Texas at AT&T Stadium
in Arlington. The next stop is Tampa who hasn’t hosted a Supercross event since 1999. Then it’s on to Atlanta and the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. A return to Foxborough replaces East Rutherford in the second half of the season. There are a few other schedule changes as far as dates but the main stops are still on the schedule with the traditional final round at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. Fox, Fox Sports 1, and Fox Sports 2 will again be covering all the events, most of which will be live as FOX prepares its coverage times due to some great news; Supercross viewership was up 13 percent in 2017. Tickets for the 2018 season go on sale beginning October 24. 4-time AMA Supercross Champion and Red Bull KTM rider Ryan Dungey claimed the 2017 title and retired to possibly own and manage a team (we will see). The favorites heading into 2018 Supercross are should be recuoperating Honda rider Ken Roczen, Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac, KTM’s Marvin Musquin and Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson.

2018 Yamaha Star Venture Announced
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy Yamaha waited for just the right time…and the time is now. They are entering into the touring market with an all new 2018 Star Venture. They are in all the other class markets (sport bikes, cruiser, adventure sport classes, dirt, ATV, RTC, etc) and now they are ready to compete with the Honda Gold Wing and the Harley Touring motorcycles. This new machine has a ton of new equipment to get you to your next stop in luxury; touch-screen infotainment center, ride-by-wire cruise and traction controls, electrically adjustable windshield, heated grips and seats and an electric motor to help maneuver the bike in parking situations, both forward and reverse. But that’s just some of the new development that Yamaha has put into this machine. The Star Venture uses a completely new frame, with steel tubing for the main chassis and an aluminum sub-frame. The sub-frame doubles as an oil reservoir and is said to help shed heat. The frame-mounted fairing (like the H-D Road Glide) is customizable for different riders and conditions. It’s powered by a newly designed 113ci/1854cc V-Twin with twin counter balancers and composite rubber engine mounts to keep the engine at a comfortable, good vibration. The six-speed transmission gives it a comfortable touring ride as well as distance with its huge 6.6 gallon fuel tank. Enough about the inside, let’s talk about the outside. Traction control, linked ABS braking and cruise control are just a few more standard options you’ll enjoy without having to pay extra. The Star Venture has two 375-watt alternators to power all the goodies Yamaha has included for you besides what is mentioned above. When riding at night, the 4-headlight LED lighting
10 - Southern Biker Magazine
system will light your way like it was daylight. Additional LEDs are in the taillight and the mirror mounted turn signals. A smart key fob controls the electric saddlebags and tour-pack, fuel door and it allows you to start the motorcycle without using a key. The rider’s backrest has a three-position adjustment and heated as is the passenger back rest. Yamaha touts this new touring motorcycle has over 37 gallons of storage space with the tour-pack being able to hold two extra-large full-face helmets. Two handy compartments in the fairing house two USB ports, one in a fairing pocket along with a 12-volt port for heated gear connections and one in the trunk. Those USB ports can also integrate with the Venture’s 7” LCD touchscreen Harmon infotainment system and controlled by the touch-screen, handlebar switches and/or voice commands via an accessory headset. With a low seat height of 27.4”, Yamaha upgraded the suspension. The 46mm fork has 5.1” of stroke, while the single shock has 4.3” of rear travel with remote hydraulic preload adjustability. Fully equipped, this Star Venture will come in at $24,999 and come in two colors; Granite Gray or Raspberry Metallic. Upgrade the 2018 Star Venture with Yamaha’s Transcontinental Option Package for $2,000 and you get: GPS navigation with home computer integration, CB radio, SiriusXM, and Sirius XM Travel Link, Dual Zone audio control system—the rider and passenger can listen to different music, and each rider can have private phone conversations. Well, it’s coming. Before they arrive in the showroom, go test ride one soon at Star Days, Sturgis, the AIMExpo and at Biketoberfest.

RIDING ADVENTURES IN SCOTLAND Sparkling lochs, rugged mountains, fabulous Highland back roads - a motorcyclist’s dream. By Jim Leggett
M
y accent, Scots, often prompts Americans to boast ancient roots in the “Old Country” or simply fell in love with travel posters and magazine pictures of ragged mountains, leggy lasses in swirling kilts, pipe bands in full Highland regalia marching proudly over the heath. Land of shimmering lochs, rugged mountains, ancient castles, and a right bloodthirsty brawl since Roman times, Scotland boasts countless stunning stretches of motorcycling tarmac, among the best in all Europe.
Rugg grandeur, Black Coolin Mountains, Isle of Skye
I’ve motorcycled through Spain, Germany, Hungary, Canada, even forbidden Burma, yet I still yearn for joys of Scotland’s misty glens. Add a care-free mindset, throttle open wide, fresh highland air in the nostrils aye lads, ye canny beat Scotland for thrilling motorcycling! North of historic Stirling, Aberdeen and Inverness lie inviting two-lane “A” and even quieter “B” rated highland roads that thread rolling hills and sweeping valleys like cobwebs, uninhabited mostly, except for the odd lunatic sheep. Top-brand bike manufacturers, Jaguar and Rolls-Royce motorcars, too, test new models hereabouts; such is the challenging quite magical terrain.
12 - Southern Biker Magazine
Scotland’s national hero William Wallace (Braveheart) first voiced the notion of selfless patriotism; French scientist Louis Pasteur observed Scotland was one of the first countries to ally its national destiny to the development of the human mind. Fellow Scotsman James Watt’s steam engine led us, in time, to the motorcycle, via the Michaux-Perreaux Steam Velocipede, pioneered in France from 1868-71. Then there’s the long forgotten Scot who discovered Usequ Beatha—“water of life”—whisky, no doubt an ancestor of mine, bless his soul. Fellow Glaswegian and riding mate John Gallagher, astride his silver1955 Norton Dominator high performance sport roadster, aka Café Racer, was the “fastest man on Loch Lomond winding roads” A national newspaper said so, chiding him for his devil-be-damned spirit. The Dommie’s legendary “Featherbed” frame and superb road handling conquered any corner that finely tuned 597cc engine exhaust rasp awesome to hear. John’s superb fastriding skills were a delight to observe, too…from behind! GLASGOW TO LOCH LOMOND Slower paced, winding through Idyllic beauty, the Stockiemuir Road (A81) a few miles outside Glasgow offers tons
of fun, sweeping bends, sudden jumps, and very few, very short straights. Enjoy detours to little known ruins like Mugdok Castle (B821) for grand views of the dreamy Campsie Hills. Then head back toward Drymen on A81, where you might be welcomed by a local pipes and drums band’s rousing tunes of glory on the little village green. A favorite rider’s lunch stop is the Clachan Inn, (1734) oldest in the land, carousing haunt of freebooter Rob Roy, and irreverent comedian/actor Billy Connolly. From Drymen the B837, rugged and full of blind summits, sweeps northwest to dead end on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, lined with woodsy spots to pull bikes over among seductive bluebells, massive oaks and Douglas Firs that fret the shoreline. Looking for good digs? Rowardennan Youth Hostel, in a superb woodland setting end of the road, offers bargain B&B rates, great breakfasts, dinners, too if you order ahead, a superb hideaway, as are equally delightful hostels in Glasgow Stirling, Edinburgh and most countryside regions. A nudist colony, they say, hides on an island here, which, like the Loch Ness Monster, is yet to be seen by anyone I know! At the end of the loch side road lies the Rob Roy Inn; sumptuous homemade haggis, mashed turnips with new potatoes, and, of course, a wee dram – taken with a splash of spring water, never ice. to the Highlands, reeks with history. Yon epic movie Braveheart did more for the Scottish Tourist Board (visitscotland.com) than anyone could have dreamed. Overseas pilgrims arrived in droves eager to explore the town where the13th-century melee took place, explore Stirling Castle, Bannockburn battlefield (1314), and stark 11th century tower of Cambuskenneth Abbey, from where Wallace planned his attack. At Causewayhead stands the 220-foot-tall Wallace Monument, a gothic tower built in 1869, on a craggy volcanic summit where Wallace, barely out of his teens, directed his troops. Atop the monument patriotic townsfolk get married, even hold windswept christenings, praying the terror-stricken infant isn’t blown over the parapets! Nearby, off the B998, lies a movie set-like medieval graveyard, crammed with curious moss-covered tombstones, adorned with bold skulls and crossbones, rumored to be witches graves. A roofless church ruin (1684) stands Godly guard over the ancient dead. Adjacent the church, a delightful ride up a narrow single-track road leads to the Sheriff Muir, where a lonesome Inn is happy to welcome motorcyclists, goodly dining, and grand conversation with fellow bikers over a friendly pint. Farther north there’s Scotland’s real-life “Brigadoon” village, Crovie, pronounced Crivie, an hour or so north of Aberdeen. After negotiating the city’s nightmare of endless roundabouts, take the A947 through Oldmeldrum, Fyvie and Turrif and head for the old fishing town of Macduff. The best fish and chips in Scotland are found Crovie, hidden village on Gamrie Bay Banff hereabouts. Motorcycle rentals are available in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness. Weatherproof gear is essential; we can get all four seasons in a single day. My contact at Visitscotland.com says, “I would recommend Salitre motorcycles (www. saltiremotorcycles.com/ ). Best time to go; April through October. And, midsummer Scottish daylight lasts till near midnight.

Tattoos, cold beverages, great food and awesome live music were the reasons folks rode or trailered their motorcycles here. This year’s event brought in people from all over on the weekend of April 28th30th. Every day was filled with the roar of thousands of bikes and people enjoying a great motorcycle atmosphere. Main Street and all surrounding streets were lined from end to end with bikes and people enjoying the day.

PRODUCT REVIEW CIRO Product Reviews By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
C
IRO contacted us about doing some product testing and reviews on some of their motorcycle accessory products for our readers. I looked over their product lines and was amazed at the craftsmanship and design of their products so I agreed. They sent several items so here we go.
Universal Drink Holder
Many of us have drink holders on our motorcycles. My wife had a different cup holder for a couple years and I removed it and replaced it with the CIRO Universal Drink Holder. Well, as soon as she saw it, she loved the way it looked. But even better, it held her drinks from fast food restaurants so she was pleased that it would hold a big sweet tea from McDonalds. The craftsmanship is simple yet amazingly versatile. Virtually any can, bottle, or cup can be carried in style. It holds you drink securely with a contoured rubber net that adjusts for different size cups, metal or plastic coffee cups, bottled waters, Gatorade, etc. A rubber lined ring keeps your drink from vibrating and the rubber netting will not scratch you nice metal cups at all. It is THE cup holder for today’s rider.
Chrome plated and netting made from tough neoprene rubber, this drink holder will really stand up to the elements. It comes with your choice of mounts; perch mount from the switch housing on the handlebars, on the handlebars itself or a fairing mount. And a customer said, “Very nice cup holder for my 30oz Yeti cup. This is a very nice looking and well built cup holder. My Harley frame mount cup holder would not hold a 30oz Yeti cup, so I attached the hardware (made a little adjustment with the rubber holder) in three places in order for the larger cup to fit. Even after cutting this band, other smaller cups and bottles fit very well. I highly recommend this holder.”
Panoramic Vented Smoke Windshield
Many of us Harley-Davidson riders have windshields from all sizes and smoked tints. They are necessary and much needed for watching the road. A lot of manufactures are now going risible windshields that allow air to flow through or vented fairings that draw wind into the rider when needed. Why is that? Because they have learned that on hot summer days, it gets hot behind those windshield fairings and the rider needs some additional air flowing to cool off. So what do the rest of us that have plain windshields on older models do?
CIRO solves that problem with their 6” Panoramic vented Windshields. Pulling it out, I immediately noticed the 3 extra inch width on each side for my Harley Ultra. It fits right down perfectly snug onto the fairing over the speakers. That reduces the wind on my hands and keeps those bugs and gravels from hitting them. That’s a nice additional feature.
It’s aerodynamically engineered to create a smooth flow of air and dramatically reduces buffeting. The curved lines at the top of the windshield help redirect the wind-blast from your helmet. The vent is nicely constructed and easy to open and close. Riding around East Tennessee and North Georgia in 90 degree days, I opened it full bore and what relief it does give you. Comfortable riding was the end result. I ran into some rain so I reached up to close it off with one hand with ease. This is a good investment for anyone who likes riding any kind of distance, especially in hot weather. These are just two items for this issue. Next issue we’ll review their LED Lighted Bag Blades and the Smartphone Holder with charger products.

Superbike Star & EXMotoGP Champion Nicky Hayden Passes By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
Daviess County, Kentucky and race fans around the world are shocked after learning motorcycle racing superstar Nicky Hayden was critically injured on May 16 while training in Italy when he was hit by a car on his bicycle. On May 22nd, the family announced Nicky has succumbed to his injuries and is gone. The 35-year-old Kentucky rider suffered severe brain damage and where the damage was so severe; the doctors could not operate until the swelling in his brain subsided. Friends and fans held onto hope and prayed for a better outcome, but his injuries were too great. His longtime ago teammate Valentino Rossi was especially hit hard. “Nicky is one of the best friends I have had…” Nicknamed the “Kentucky Kid,” Hayden had worked his way up to

the premier class of MotoGP by 2003, when he was just 21 years old, teaming up with Valentino Rossi at Repsol Honda. Just three years later, Hayden would win the MotoGP World Championship after a season-long battle with Rossi. Hayden remained in MotoGP full-time until 2015 but was unable to make it back to the top step of the podium again. In 2016, Hayden switched to the Superbike World
Championship where he took a race win in Malaysia. I met Nicky back in the day after he won his first championship. I’ve not met a more genuine, down to earth person, who happened to be famous. Southern Biker Magazine is asking its readers for prayers and comfort for the family. July 2017

Run For The Wall Remembering Those
Who Gave the Ultimate Sacrifice
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy Riders from all over the country came to honor those who sacrificed their lives by going on a 10-day cross-country ride beginning in Los Angeles, California and ending on Memorial Day in Washington, DC at the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Wall. This year’s Run For The Wall ride had three routes riders could choose to join up; the Central Route, the Midway Route and the Southern Route of which the later two came through the southern states. The Midway Route had stops in Forest City, AK, Cookeville, TN, Ashville, NC and Fayetteville, NC. The Southern Routes made stops in Meridian, MS and Chattanooga, TN with a pass through for both in Knoxville, TN. The only overnight stop in Tennessee was Cookeville and the entire city did not hold back from honoring the riders and their commitment for the journey each year. Law enforcement escorted 300 riders through the streets of Cookeville who were greeted by American flags and hundreds of supporters lining the streets which brought many riders to tears. A private dinner and meeting was held for the riders who enjoyed the same sent off the next day the way they were received. “Our community comes together each year to welcome these special guests to Cookeville and Putnam County,” said Zach Ledbetter, vice president of visitor development. “The local support and excitement for this impactful event only builds with each year. We are humbled to be a part of such a significant event.”
I know remains in each of our hearts throughout the year, and only grows with each year we return.” Run For The Wall’s mission statement; To promote healing among ALL veterans and their families and friends, to call for an accounting of all Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action (POW/MIA), to honor the memory of those Killed in Action (KIA) from all wars, and to support our military personnel all over the world. If you’ve never ridden on this ride, it is definitely one for you bucket list. Just make sure to bring your camera and lots of tissues.
“There is always one city that stands out,” said James “Gunny” Gregory, RFTW founder. “Cookeville is obviously that city for the Midway Route. This community’s hospitality is one
