WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hello SBMag Readers, Most everyone has a story of meeting new folks while riding motorcycles. We have encountered so many folks and made so many new friends, that without us riding motorcycles, my friends list would be considerably smaller. This time of the year, we are very busy with events, publishing magazines, my real estate, taking care of the ranch, taking care of our good friend Angel and trying to spend time with each of our families; it doesn’t leave much time for us to spend time together doing what we want, much less spending time with others. We make time because in the end, your friends are who you can count on. Just this last month, we met an awesome group of people from New York that came down to visit one of our neighbors, New York John (that’s what we call him). It was his son and 15 others. Well, to make a long story short, they have become some of our best friends in a short
time. We rode the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway ending in Tellico Plains with them. My husband and Angel even prepared a T-bone steak dinner for everyone, Southern hospitality style. We enjoyed their company into the evening but said our goodbyes as they would be leaving soon. They will be returning with more friends in a few weeks… and a couple of them, possibly moving here. This is what riding is all about in a nut shell. You get to clear your head, clear your thoughts, see beautiful scenic views and every now and then… meet some awesome people who become great life-long friends. As my husband said, “Eh Yo… it’s New York New Yorkers”. Ride those back roads and don’t be afraid to talk to folk. That’s why you need to…“Keep Your Knees In The Breeze!”©

Knoxville Harley-Davidson
Turns By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
M
ilestones in life are come and go. But the big milestones are important for many different reasons. Turning 50… well, it’s pretty dang HUGE! Knoxville HarleyDavidson turned 50 years old and had a weekend blowout to strut their stuff. Back in 1966, Dile Brown purchased a small Harley-Davidson dealership in Chillicothe, Ohio. He operated it on a part-time basis. In 1968 Dile and his wife Connie moved to Knoxville, Tennessee to begin a new life, a new chapter in the families scrap book; they opened Knoxville Harley-Davidson. They moved with their two sons, David & DJ who eventually become a big part of the Brown’s Harley-Davidson portfolio. After opening in KHD and seeing that Harley-Davidson was taking off across the country, the Browns began a move to West Knoxville and opened their second dealership in 2005, Bootlegger Harley-Davidson. Their dealerships also include Knoxville Honda-Yamaha-Suzuki, Knoxville Indian and the Triumph franchise. KHD’s 50th Anniversary Party was packed with vendors and the Wall of Death with their death-defying motorcycles defying gravity to entertain the crowd. Letterfly Custom Pinstriping was on hand and doing his magic on just about everything. They had bands every day, a bikini dunk wash (I think I saw Conner McGregor in it at one time) and lots of giveaways including a new motorcycle won by Jennifer Alpers. “As the dealer here in Knoxville since 1968 my experience with Harley-Davidson® is long and rewarding. I have been a Harley-Davidson® rider and enthusiast since 1952, with my first purchase of a 1942 Harley-Davidson® WLA, and I owned Cushman scooters prior to that. I have owned, ridden and raced most every Harley® they have offered. My wife (Connie) and I ride as often as possible as there is nothing more relaxing, to us, as a motorcycle ride”, states Dile Brown. Come check out both Knoxville Harley-Davidson and Bootlegger Harley-Davidson. Oh, and don’t forget a t-shirt!

2018 Leesburg Bikefest
One for the Books
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy Photos by Bryan Lambert
T
he 22nd Annual Leesburg Bikefest arrived into central Florida with a HUGE ROAR! This one would be for the books as riders from around the nation and many from outside the USA came to enjoy what is touted as being the largest 3-Day Motorcycle Rally on the planet. Over 50+ concerts brought in some of the best entertainment thus far with the likes of Scott Stapp of Creed, Tom Keifer of Cinderella, Colt Ford, Jasmine Cain and a host of many others. The stage areas were packed with folks enjoying the live music and everything that the Leesburg Bikefest had to offer. Many other types of entertainment were also on hand for the rally goers to watch; The Wall of Death motorcycle stunt show, Ride Like a Pro motorcycle training group, the Inked Magazine girls were on hand for some tattooed eye-candy, Team Extreme and the biker games were fun to watch for spectators and some could be a part of the action. The bike shows are a big point of recruiting some of the best built and best painted bikes seen anywhere. The Rat’s Hole Bike Show is the big cheese show and it did not disappoint this year. It was an awesome display of machines. With over 200 vendors, folks had their choice of anything to buy or eat. Their only dilemma was to use cash or credit. Main Street Leesburg was indeed packed beyond recognition. The City of Leesburg, its citizens and the Leesburg Partnership all opened their arms to welcome in riders and others who just want to take part in this event. An estimate of 200,000 folks came to the area for just this event. It is one of the events to put on your schedule if you haven’t already. “…you can drink in the downtown streets and no other community does that during Motorcycle Events. As you can see from all the great photos we captured, everyone it seemed had a blast”, said photographer Bryan Lambert. “(There were) lots of Hot Body and Bikini Contests (Ms. Southern Biker Magazine represented us well) for both the Ladies and a couple for the men all weekend. We look forward to this event all year long. We want to thank Mandy Wettstein, Don Bernard along with The Leesburg Partnership for a job well done and all the hospitality. Motorcycles weren’t the only thing rolling across the asphalt this year. Some outstanding tricked out Big Rigs convoyed into the event and the crowd went crazy. Some of those trucks had to have over $100,000 of customization in them. Sunday saw Colt Ford with final concert and it appeared the locals came out in droves. “It looked to me like we had a pretty good turnout throughout the weekend, and the weather was a huge part of that. It was the best weather we’ve ever had,” said Joe Shipes of the Leesburg Partnership which host the event each year. Leesburg Police Lt. Joe Iozzi called it one of the most docile, friendly crowds he’s seen in the past decade. “We’ve always had a philosophy that if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it,” he said. See you next year at the largest 3-Day Motorcycle Rally. For more information, see www.leesburgbikefest.com. 10 - Southern Biker Magazine

THUNDER BEACH
T
he 20th anniversary of the Thunder Beach Spring Rally has never seen a larger turnout than what was there this year. Riders from all over the country and outside, Canada and outside the US came to Panama City Beach, Florida to take in all that the Emerald Coast has to offer. And ol’ Mother Nature gave one for the books with 80* weather and sunshine! Thunder Beach Productions put together great venues, great partners with terrific locations and some of the best entertainment with a $0 price tag. Little Ozzie, Lita Ford and Colt Ford headlined at Frank Brown Park with hundreds of vendors. Also playing in the area was Mustang Sally, Jasmine Cain, Buck Wild, Geneva, Roadhouse Atlanta, Big Engine, Brujah and a whole lot more. At Frank Brown Park they also had Circus Una and their high flying motorcycle act. TBR also had Harley-
12- Southern Biker Magazine
Davidson and Indian Demo Rides to go on. The Rally got kicked off at Hammerhead Fred’s with Buck Wild on Wednesday night Along with the first round of the Miss Thunder Beach Pagent. The place was packed and folks were making some noise. Thursday and Friday brought out some great riding in the area and lots of folks hitting the vendors and their favorite watering holes. We also saw a lot of folks on the beach and in the ocean this year. That 80° weather will bring out the sunbathers.
The Southern Biker Road Crew came in full force this year with our Panama City Beach Rep Ms Amber, Mike Hood & Mel, the Sanders, the Hundleys, Smokin’ Joe, Beth, the Shipleys, myself and my wife Kristin and our newest, married Road Crew members…the Pates! We ate everywhere and we ate good! We kicked off a group dinner at Dat Cajun Place with the owner Trudy White and every day we continued to different places like Outlaw BBQ, Chubby’s, Shuckums, Ms Newby’s and more. But we
always can be found at SiK Cycles and Buster’s Beer and Baits with our last stop every evening at Hershey’s Ice Cream!
The best motorcycle shows to attend during the week were the LED Motorcycle Light Show, the Baddest Bagger Contest hosted by American Bagger Magazine and the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show hosted by Southern Biker Magazine. Our focus for the end of the week was the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show we host. Over 50 motorcycles from all over the country came to enter and possibly win the coveted 6-ft custom painted surfboards. We had a guy ride from as far away as Marshal, TX to be in our show. Motorcycles with two and three wheels entered to win the coveted 14” laser engraved wooden surfboards by Echelot Laser Designs in Madisonville, Tennessee and receive door prizes from Southern Biker Magazine including a $500 Invicta watch. Hundreds of folks joined the SBMag Road Crew and purchased our shirts and swag to tout us loud and proud!

Hits a Home Run
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I’m glad I have qualified judges for these events because it’s not easy at all. We always have different judges so none of the same ideas and thoughts on what motorcycles should have or look like are the same each show. With our three judges, the scores averaged up and the results are as follows (and see the chart at right for details). The People’s Choice and the Editor’s Choice received the 6-ft custom painted surfboards. 3-D Head Custom Painting out of Knoxville, TN did some amazing work on these boards and the winners were proud to have them. Jeff Daniels even strapped his on his custom rat rod bike and rode up and down the strip to let everyone know who the Top Prize. Bob McNally from LawBike.com presented the trophies to every winner. After the show, we treated our entire staff to dinner and cold beverages at the Outlaw BBQ and then cold beverages at Buster’s Beer & Baits. We will again be hosting the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show in the fall that is scheduled for October 24-28th. So shine up you motorcycle, add some chrome, parts and paint or just make a creation of your

own and bring it! Thunder Beach Productions has already begun the task of getting top entertainment for you so add the date to your calendar and we’ll see you there. Always remember when going to Thunder Beach and you buy merchandise, make sure it’s OFFICIAL merchandise. If it doesn’t say Thunder Beach on it, it’s just another bogus t-shirt you’ll end up tossing out or using it to wipe off your greasy hands while fixing stuff. No one would put a Honda emblem on a Harley, so make sure you buy the real thing and we’ll see you in the fall!

Travis Pastrana
to Replicate Three Evel Knievel Jumps Using Indian Scout By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
M
otorcycle enthusiasts and the general public of a certain age may remember one of their first icons; daredevil, motorcycle stuntman, Evel Knievel. In 1967 he attempted to jump his Triumph over the fountain in front of Vegas’ Caesar’s Palace. You’ll also remember his ill-fated jump attempt over the Snake River Canyon in a steampowered rocket. Those are the days of folk lore when it comes to motorcycle daredevils.
premiering Sunday, July 8th at 8PM ET on HISTORY® channel. Travis will attempt three of Knievel’s most famed jumps on an Indian Scout FTR750; jumping the length of 52+ crushed cars, jumping 16 Greyhound busses, and the ill-fated Caesars Palace fountain jump that left Knievel grasping for his life. If successful, Pastrana will be the first individual to complete all three jumps in one three-hour time-span and on a motorcycle similar to those Evel used.
Supercross and motorcycle stunt guru, Travis Pastrana will be paying tribute to Evel Knievel, during “Evel Live”, an unprecedented three-hour live event
The Indian Scout FTR750 is a flat track racing motorcycle but designed similar to those which Evel used in his jumps. However, none of Evel’s or the Indian
Scout were intended for jumping. “It was extremely important to use a motorcycle similar to the ones Evel jumped. The Indian Scout FTR 750 is just that, a modern-day evolution of the flat track motorcycles of the past,” said Pastrana. “It has the power I need and handles well, but I’m only going to have a few days to get comfortable on it, not to mention I’ve never jumped a V-twin before. I’ve got my work cut out, but we’re used to going big at Nitro Circus, so we’ll make it happen.” July 8th is just around the corner, so tune in and watch this unprecedented day of motorcycle stunts.
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
S
moky Mountain Harley-Davidson unleashed the Black Dragon and they had a tremendous Breakdown. The day was packed with great food from the Shed Smokehouse & Juke Joint, vendors and lots of entertainment and games. Live bands played throughout the day along with a few twists. The 100 foot Dragstrip was available for attendees to challenge their buddy or even strangers. They put on a burnout clinic to teach you how to do one right. The vintage bike show and car show was a great
touch to this event. It pulled in all types of vintage bikes and a lot of remanufactured ones. They even had several folks head out on their Ridemore Ride of the week. This event chronicles the motorcycle builder, young and old; build what you can with what you got and bring it to show everyone. Builders from all walks of life and even high school young builders have come to this event in the past. It’s a great way to get know others that are like minded and see some awesome builds.

8 Annual OAA Bike Blessing th
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
S
tand for the Flag… Kneel for the Cross… that was the theme for this year’s 8th Annual OAA Bike Blessing. What a great day it was to meet new folks and renew friendships with coming of the riding season. The ride benefitted the homeless and recovering drug addicts in the area. Preacher Morgan Clough and his staff at the OAA Outreach Center in Madisonville, Tennessee host this event each year and it seems to be trending. Many RC and MC clubs attended this event as well as a huge
attendance by local riders. I was honored to give the blessing over the ride and got my bike blessed for the year by the Preach himself. A huge BBQ was set for all riders and afterwards, they went on a beautiful ride around Monroe County… police escorted. Ending at the old-fashioned A&W DriveIn Restaurant in Madisonville TN was a great end to a great ride. What day we had with friends and riders we hadn’t met before. Preacher Morgan added, “Thank you to each company who helped us this year. We raised over $2,300 for those in need in our area.”
