words from the publisher

Hey Folks, Seems like many of us are longing for a by-gone era, when times were simple and un-complicated with all the worries and pressures of today's world. As I looked through the current issue of the H.O.G. Magazine, I noticed a theme. Many of the towns featured were peaceful, beautiful and off the beaten path. Many of them reminded me of a time long ago, kind of like they were frozen in time. I find myself yearning for similar places to visit and check out the local establishments. Many towns have awesome mom and pop restaurants with outstanding local cuisine that you would miss otherwise. There is nothing like viewing the scenery from your motorcycle as you turn a curve and see what vistas lay ahead of you. You don't get that view from a car and you are disconnected from the landscape. On a motorcycle, you feel the landscape and smell the wonderful fragrances, like someone cooking dinner, fresh cut grass, etc. If you have traveled to places like this and would like to submit an article and photos of the scenery and people you traveled with, we would be happy to consider publishing them. ocated on the outskirts of Bristol, TN is a motorcycle playground. It is called Hwy 421 or to some “The Snake”. This ride has been compared to the Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap. It has 489 curves in a 33-mile stretch, crossing three mountains and one valley. There are several different ways to tackle this snake, but this is the path we took to conquer the snake. My husband and I meet our friends at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Then we headed up hwy 394 towards hwy 421. Once we turned onto hwy 421 we noticed a yellow warning sign telling truckers to turn around, switchbacks start in seven miles. We continued up the road. Once we crossed over the Holston Lake, we started our way up Holston Mountain. Half way up the mountain, we noticed a sign for camping on either side of the road. We went on, and enjoyed the snaky turns. Then we entered into Shady Valley, this is a straight stretch, and at the fourway we stopped off at the Country Store, to get something cold to drink. This little store has a lot to offer, from food, drinks, dining room, and clean restrooms. They even have clothes and

motorcycle accessories, all at reasonable prices. They also have pictures hanging on the wall, with even some parts from where people whom the snake bit. Check out their little door that has two boxers and two German Sheppard’s inside to keep guard. Outside they have rocking chairs, and a few picnic tables to enjoy the nice day. Be careful pulling in, because the day we were there, it was full so we parked over to the side. When we was getting ready to leave, a elderly man pulled in on his scooter, and pulled in between two Harleys, as he tried to put the kick stand down he turned his over onto one of the Harleys. The only thing that saved that man was the fact of his age. We got back onto our bikes, and decided to turn onto hwy 91 heading towards Backbone Rock. This will take you through some nice farmland and back into Cherokee National Forest. Backbone Rock is a nice place to stop and have a picnic by the river, and enjoy some scenic views and campout at their campground. Going through the smallest man made railway tunnel, we headed on towards Damascus VA. After going through this beautiful town that is famous for its bike cycle trail the Creepier Trail, we headed on towards Mountain City. Here the road turns back into some nice curves, with the mountain on one side and the river on the other, making our way back to hwy 421. Back on hwy 421, we get onto the back end of Powell Mountain, and head up the treacherous Iron Mountain. This road is mean and you will find out fast why they call it the snake. After making it to the top, we began our decent down. Coming back to the four-way stop, we decided to stop back at the

little store and top off our gas. We got us another cold drink, and rested for a few minutes, before getting back onto our bikes, and heading towards Elizabethton, on hwy 133. We noticed that this road was being patched up, but it was not the best job I have seen, so with care we headed down the mountain, and enjoyed our ride. After leaving the turns behind us, we entered into some nice farmland, and made our way towards Elizabethton, bringing our day run to an end. It does not matter how you run the snake, you can take any path you like. You can even rent a cabin. Camp out along the Appalachian Trail, our get a motel in one of the towns along the snake’s path. However, any way you choice to do, just remember, that this road is famous for its curves, and it brings all sort of motorcycle riders, and fast cars to this road. Just take care and conquer the snake do not let it bite you.

2013 Honda CBR250R Review

H

onda’s CBR250R originally hit the US back in 2011 and has garnered numerous accolades. This year is no different. The entry level sportbike got some dramatic appeal enhancements. The CBR250R is available with ABS, a 249cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a four-valve DOHC cylinder head and counter-balancer, and PGM-FI fuel injection (that which its competitor is does not have). Typically anointed as a beginners sport bike, this bike not only has style, but a great punch on the throttle as well. The CBR250R has fast acceleration through the gears and a quick response on the breaks. When I got on this machine, I was hoping I wouldn’t bring it down in power since I am a little weighty. But I was proven wrong as this Honda product broke loose on more than one occasion and showed me, it might be little, but it packs a punch. Nibble through the corners and fast out of the hole, this bike really

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

impressed me. The CBR250R’s unique bodywork designed for the CBR style and functionality routes airflow for both engine cooling and rider comfort. The CBR250R’s suspension features a diamond twin-spar steel frame and a 37mm front fork with a Pro-Link single-shock rear suspension that provides awesome comfortable and handling. This Honda gets 77 mpg, which will get you over 200miles to a tank of gas. That is a distinct advantage in today’s high gas pricing market. The CBR250R is available in two versions: the CBR250R and the CBR250R with ABS. And for 2013, the color choices are plus: Black, the all new Red, and a new Pearl White/Blue/Red; all of which come with new black wheels and ex-

haust and then comes the new Repsol replica version. Final thoughts, this bike is well worth the starting price of around $3,999 (a little more for the ABS version). It has everything a beginner would want in a bike and a surprise to the experienced rider looking for an economical motorcycle with a lot of fun built in.

PRODUCT REVIEW

Bone Mountain Motor Gear® By Ms Mag Man, Kristin Gracy

W

hile attending the Women in the Motorcycle Industry Reception during Bike Week in Daytona Beach, FL, I had the opportunity to meet Lisa Bone from Bone Mountain Motor Gear®. Lisa demonstrated her product and I offered to try it and do a review on it. What a great concept! I always struggled trying to find a place to store the little items on my motorcycle. The Bone® takes care of that and more! We are constantly making stops on our bikes and it takes me so long to retrieve the items I needed from my saddle bag such as my wallet and chapstick. Now I just put them in the backrest organizer and I am ready to go in no time. It slides easily off the

20 - Southern Biker Magazine

backrest and I can carry it like a purse. Now I have a place to put my sunglasses when I get off the bike too. It slides easily onto the backrest when you get ready to go. Everything is handy and secure and within easy reach. It has multiple pockets, including interior pocket, water bottle holder, and pockets sized just right for a cell phone, camera or other accessories. It is a wonderful addition to my bike accessories and I am so thankful Lisa designed both a functional and attractive product. A little about Bone Mountain Motor Gear®-they produce a patented line of backrest accessories designed for the rider backrests of Harley-Davidson touring motorcycles. The Bone® Backrest Organizers and Pockets available today are the result of more than 3,000 miles of product testing in extreme weather conditions ranging from 100degree summer days to 20-degree mountain nights plus countless conversations with riders and passengers along the way. After many prototypes, they’ve arrived at the most functional design and durable materials to create a product that is weather-resistant and easily used on and off the motorcycle. How it started...James and Lisa Bone love to ride. They traveled the country on their Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle navigating miles of highways, winding mountain passes and quiet country roads. Drinks, snacks, sunscreen and sunglasses... you know the drill. Lisa would cram everything she could into the very narrow opening on the backside of the 2008 rider backrest. Any traveling gear that didn’t fit was stuffed into her pockets and lap, while she crossed her fingers nothing would fly off the bike. One glorious day, James bought a new 2011 motorcycle. Although the new bike was great, the updated backrest had one important thing missing - it no longer came with any storage space.

James and Lisa searched the internet and in motorcycle stores across the country looking for an accessory that would be a good solution for their problem. It didn’t exist. So they decided to create something even better - a line of backrest accessories that keeps all of your gear, securely within reach while traveling on the road. They built it to endure the elements, look good enough to be on James’ bike, and bring comfort to Lisa and James on and off the road. The called it The Bone®. Today, James, Lisa and the Bone Posse continues to create new ways to change the way we ride. Riders love the utility and that it’s designed and manufactured in the USA. It has a lifetime warranty and can be purchased online at www. bonemountain.com or found in more than 200 H-D and motorcycle stores across the country. June, 2013

Spring Thaw 2013

T

he 11th Annual Spring Thaw was held this past March 23rd, and once again the floor of the Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville, TN was packed with tons of new and used parts for all kinds of motorcycles. Although Mother Nature continued her wintry mess until late Friday night, Saturday was clear albeit a little chilly, so some folks rode their bikes and some came in their other vehicles. The good thing is the Thaw has always been a indoor show so weather may scare some off, but the turnout remains solid. Bumpus Harley-Davidson hosts an annual ride from their place down to the show with Tom Bumpus leading the way. This year Both Barrels Promotions blended in their love of four wheeled art and added a rat rod truck and rat rod car class to the show, which brought in some cool and unusual rides for spectators to check out along with all of the awesome bikes. There were everything from vintage Japanese, European and Harleys all the way to full blown modern radical custom bikes on display. One thing

By: Randy Gracy Photos: Don Mitchell

about this show: every type of bike is welcome. Pete Jamestone and The Rebel Surfers played a few sets of their awesome mix of surf/rockabilly style while Bruce Heard Continental Tuneage filled in the gaps with his DJ services. Some of the winner’s of this year’s show include Steven Long in the Low Buck Chopper Class, Chris Craighead for Best Rat Rod Truck, and Ronnie Jones for best Rat Rod Car, all of whom win $200.00 for their wins. Best Paint Award went to John Creekmur’s 1957 Panhead chop, while Ricky Lewis picked up the Grease Monkey Magazine pick award for his old school ‘68

Shovelhead Chopper which had just been ridden to Daytona and back with no issues. The Best of Show Award for the bikes is always tough competition, and this year was no different. Bikes from Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee were all in the top three, with the big trophy and the $1,000.00 Best of Show prize money going to Lance Dodson’s absolutely beautiful DoMaCo Norton, a blend of several year’s worth on Norton parts, with a splash of modern Yamaha parts thrown in. If you’ve never been to the Spring Thaw, you owe it to yourself to go next March and check out all the cool bikes, cars and cruise the swap meet, who knows what you’ll find. Chain Of Hope

By Kim Fry pril 6th marked the 3rd annual Chain of Hope ride for Jennifer and Adrianna Wix, mother and daughter who have been missing under suspicious circumstances from the home of Jennifer’s boyfriend in Robertson County, TN since March 25, 2004. The ride began 3 years ago when Jennifer’s stepfather, Larry Nale, wanted to find a way to honor Jennifer and Adrianna while increasing awareness and support for their case. He decided to do what he knows best.......RIDE HIS MOTORCYCLE. That first year there were about 100 bikes in attendance, this year nearly 400 bikes rode to show their support and remember the girls. The ride has given renewed hope to Jennifer and Adrianna’s family and they believe that through the support of the biker community that they will one day soon know what happened to the girls. “Thank you to our biker family for remembering Jennifer and Adrianna and for supporting our search for them and the truth. We hope that everyone had a great time and enjoyed their day. Remember, say their names to everyone that you meet! One day we will have our girls home, because of you........our Chain of Hope.” Southern Biker Magazine was proud to be a sponsor of this motorcycle event.

y all indications, even though Mother Nature blew in a huge rain storm, everyone that went to this first time event had a ball. With bands like Phoenix Rising, Monkey Wrench and Chris Rains the folks kept rocking till the wee hours of the morning. The new bike games stadium was an absolute hit. Everyone enjoyed the new look and covered sidelines for folks to watch from (except when “Wild” Bill enters the tire toss). Lots great events and few new ones made for a great time for all participants. It was so much fun, a couple decided to have their nuptials on the big stage during the event and get hitched. Next up, June Bug Boogie 2013, we’ll see you there.

Food for Thought

by Barry Duncan

Haymaker Farms Harrogate, TN is home of LMU and a great restaurant, Haymaker Farms. Haymaker Farms is located right behind Hardees on Patterson Road. Both the food and people there are fantastic. They serve BBQ and catfish as their main fare. Stackers (fried taters, pulled pork BBQ and cheese) at $7.99. BBQ pork, BBQ chicken or catfish and 2 sides at $8.99. The combo (pork & fish) is my favorite. Side favorites are slaw and the best corn casserole in TN. Other sides include sweet potato fries, baked beans and okra. You cannot leave without trying the pecan cobbler at $2.49. Your tongue will beat your brains out for it. Haymaker Farms is open 7 days a week and you can call them at 423-869-4771. They love bikers!

Hot Wing Sauce Featured Recipe by Chef John Morris

1 stick butter 4 tablespoons brown sugar 5 tablespoons tomato sauce 1/4 teaspoon garlic 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon white pepper 1/4 teaspoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon oregano, fresh or dried Dash beer 1 dash hot sauce Buffalo Wing Sauce: Melt butter and brown sugar together over medium heat in a small saucepan on stovetop. Add tomato sauce and hot sauce into mixture. Finally, add garlic, onion powder, white pepper, chili powder, salt, and oregano. Add a dash of beer, to taste. Stir over low heat until mixture is well blended. Makes enough for about a dozen wings.
