Greetings to everyone! We hope you are enjoying this awesome weather! We've seen so many motorcycles out and about and love it! It's great to see people out riding so early in the season. We hope that's a great indicator of the coming year. This issue has lots of great events coming up that we will be covering, so we hope to see you at these events. Who knows, you just might see your photo in the magazine. We love going to motorcycle expos to see all the new products. It's mind boggling to see all the new technology and improvements being invented and developed for motorcycles. I myself like the old school bikes as they have a classic appeal, which is why I like my bike so much. It's a 2005 HarleyDavidson Softail Deluxe with an old school look with the long fenders, but has the comfort of today's technology. When we go to bike shows, we are always amazed at the diversity in the motorcycle entries. Each bike is a personal expression of their owner and wow, do some of them have a way of expressin themselves! Some have flame throwers from the exhaust, some have hydraulics that raise and lower the bike to the ground, some have LED lights that look fantastic, some have the most amazing paint accents and color coordinated to the hilt. At Daytona Bike Week this month, you will find every kind of bike show you can imagine. You can test drive new motorcycles to try them on for fit and performance. The music performers will be off the charts and most are free. If you like motorcycle racing, make your way over to Daytona International Speedway for some incredible racing. Our favorite pastime is the great food at our favorite restaurants. Aunt Catfishes and Charlie Horse are two places we always try to get out to. We bring an entourage with us when we go to these restaurants and have a great time. Hope to see you out on the road!

2017 Harley-Davidson® CVO Street Glide By Smokin' Joe Ball
A
pproaching 49K on my 2015 CVO Road Glide Ultra I decided to put a deposit down on a 2017 model Harley-Davidson®. I was hoping that a CVO Road Glide X model was in the works for release at the approaching fall dealer show. In the midst of all the rumors of engine and chassis changes a photo is released that has everyone in a flutter. It appears as though the rumors of a new engine design, Milwaukee-Eight, is going to be a reality. On the day of the dealer show, to my disappointment, the 2017 CVO Road Glide models would not be produced for the 2017 model year. Wanting a new bike, my option for a 2017 CVO models are the CVO PRO Street Breakout, CVO Street Glide and CVO Limited. I prefer the touring models so I opted to go with the CVO Street Glide. What color? Choices are Candy Cobalt/Indigo Ink, Sunburst Orange/Starfire Black, Dark Slate Candy/Artic Black and Starfire Black/ Atomic Red. The Candy Cobalt/Starfire Black is only color that comes with a chrome highlighted engine component. The other three colors have a black highlighted engine component. I have owned just about all the different major color combinations but the Starfire Black/Atomic Red caught my eye.
with larger pistons to improve dampening performance. There are too many features to list but here are just a few of the key features: • •

Boom!™ Box 6.5GT Stage II Audio System with GPS and touchscreen Boom!™ Three-Way Speakers, front and rear; high-output amplifiers; the first-production 600W system (2x300W, 4ch Class D, biamped to four 3-way speakers) Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) integrated into the BOOM!™ Box 6.5GT TPMS 5-Spoke Contrast Chrome Aggressor wheels with 90 degree valve stem

Ok, now about the bike. We’ll start with the heart of the motorcycle, the all-new Milwaukee-Eight™ 114 c/i engine. This new V-Twin features four valves, single chain-driven cam, dual spark plugs, counterbalanced and rubber mounted producing 124 ft-lbs of torque at the engine. The engine oil capacity is now 5 quarts which is a 1 quart increase. The front and rear suspension have been given an upgrade. Front suspension is the 49 mm Showa® Dual Bending Valve technology while the hand-adjustable rear suspension uses an emulsion shock

With over 10,000 miles on my 2017 CVO Street Glide I can say that Harley-Davidson® has hit a home with this model. The Milwaukee-Eight™ engine performance and drivability is great. The fuel mileage is great and has exceeded vehicle specifications. Vibrations is minimal and engine noise is pretty much non-existent. By far the smoothest and quietest running HarleyDavidson® motorcycle I have ever owned.
the RPM range and hits hard. I have owned other FLH model years 2005, 2013 and 2014 but there is no comparison in the improved handling of the 2017 CVO Street Glide. The transition in road surfaces whether it is gravel, grass or uneven surfaces this motorcycles feels very stable. The higher speed wobble that was predominant in previous year FLH models has improved by leaps and bounds. Even the wind management appears to be improved especially with cross winds and following large trucks. For me the new suspension really shows its stuff on the bumps and the uneven surfaces on asphalt that we occasionally encounter in corners. The addition of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is a handy feature that you can access at the push of a button. For me though I still like to check it with the gauge at least once a week or earlier if the temperature changes a lot. All in all I am very pleased with the changes that have been made for 2017and I am looking forward to the miles ahead.
Need to pass? No need to drop a gear, just roll the throttle as the engine torque starts early in
In my opinion this is just the beginning of new things to

come for the Harley-Davidson® brand. The Milwaukee-Eight™ engine is a game changer but when combined with an all new suspension giving us increased handling it’s not hard to see that the Harley-Davidson® Motor Company is moving us into a new era of motorcycles.

The Joys of Motorcycling Looking Back By Jim Leggett
A
ll my life I have marveled over the great adventures motorcycling has given me over many a decade. And I’ve swung an enthusiastic leg over exotic machines few can dream of in these present times of sleek, fast, sexy modern bikes. I was browsing through 160 fascinating pages of Golden Oldies – Classic Bike Road Tests, edited by Mike Nicks, for whom I wrote motorcycle yarns back in the 1980’s. As I read about bikes I knew well; Vincent, Sunbeam, Ariel, Norton, AJS, Matchless and the legendary Rudge – which in particular brought back fond memories, the first bike I ever rode. As luck would have it, during the Golden Age of British machines I was an apprentice mechanic with Bell Brothers Motorcycles in my native Glasgow, Scotland. We sold and serviced BSA, Norton, Triumph, Douglas and back then newfangled entry from Japan – Honda. But I’m getting ahead of myself, back to Rudge
Sunday afternoon we wrestled the bike up the stairs, poured a pint of petrol into the tank, and gave it a hefty kick start. Nothing. Taking turns, right legs aching, time after time, still no joy. So, kick start getting us nowhere, we opted for pushbump-start, aiming the bike down the Avenue. Third attempt, bang - exhaust pipe belched clouds of smoke – then the engine died. Another push, drop the clutch, more coughs, more smoke, spectacular flash as unburnt fuel exploded from the exhaust - at last! The powerful four-valve 500 c.c Rudge engine roared to life. Sporting an ear to ear grin, Stan leapt astride, eased open the throttle, clicked first gear and tore away in a cloud of blue smoke and glory, gear changing three more times before vanishing round the corner at the foot of the avenue.
in control of a motorcycle. What an awesome experience! From that instant I was hooked. There is no sport which will give you a lifetime of fun, adventure and thrills other than motorcycling.
UNDER AGE RIDER I was 15 when pal Stan Brown knocked on our front door. Out of breath, he’d just manhandled a hired hand-cart from a motor bike shop “Look what I found” he beamed, rummaging amongst a junk pile of motorcycle parts. “It’s an old Rudge - fastest in its class back in 1939! Hey, help me get it down to the cellar!” Eagerly two dusty wheels with tires (tyres as spelled there) assorted enginein-a-basket casings, gears, pistons chains, cables, levers galore, a heavy frame, girder front forks and RUDGE petrol tank - only clue to manufacturers name - were dragged downstairs. Over long winter nights, despite almost blowing ourselves up when the flooded carburetor burst into flames, we’d resurrected a fairly impressive looking 1939 Rudge Ulster - Ulster being to the Rudge make what Manx was to the Norton legend. At last one bright

A few adjustments, checking for leaks, and with me on the pillion we headed for Drymen, 14 miles north on the scenic Stockiemuir Road. The bike roared happily beneath us, bumpy ride with rigid rear end. Stopping at Queen’s View beauty spot overlooking Loch Lomond, he coaxed me to drive. I’d ridden bicycles; here was a powerful motorcycle - heavy, too. Pointing out a confusion of levers, gear shift pedal, brake pedal, choke cable, ignition retard I tried to fathom what to do. “Now, let the clutch out SLOW and smooth; at the same time, turn to throttle SLOWLY towards you…” Stan coaxed. Doing as told, I dropped the clutch - and stalled. Tried again stalled. Third try – easing out the clutch and YES… the bike rolled forward… both feet up and we were away! I felt the chill wind in my face; eyes started watering, thrilled to discover myself

Danell Lynn Sets Guinness World Record By Ms Mag Man, Kristin Gracy
R
eading about this most long and excellent adventure, I thought I would write about this lady’s historic ride as there are others that may never have heard of her journey; a world record breaking journey. In a man’s world of riding a motorcycle long distance, this would still be a new world record. But riding her Triumph Bonneville GL, female rider and now Guinness World Record holder, Danell Lynn has earned the title of Longest Journey by Motorcycle in a Single Country as she traveled 48,600 miles inside of one year. She is also the first female solo rider to ever hold this record. She packed her Bonneville GL with every piece of clothing, accessories and motorcycle gear she would need for this historic record breaking feat. Using a programmable GPS to keep track of her routes, she traveled through 48 states of the United States for her world record. Her travels actually covered all 50 states, as well as three Canadian provinces, totaling more than 53,000 miles from September 2014 through September 2015, Guinness only counted the miles logged within the continental 48 states. Duplicate route miles also did not apply to the record; each of the 48,600 miles covered different routes. More amazing is that Danell Lynn only started riding her own motorcycle about seven years ago. Danell said, “(When I first began riding) I bought a great starter for just $1,200 and learned my wrenching and riding skills on that 1982 Virago and then bought my dream bike, the bike I would take for a year on the road, my 2006 Triumph Bonneville and named her Amelia.” “My biggest lows were at the start of the trip. In the first two days I had a swarm of emotions from wondering “what the hell am I doing,” to the thrill of taking off on an adventure, to body aches and pains and forgetting my backpack at a gas station
14 - Southern Biker Magazine
on day two with my wallet, camera and all the important stuff for the trip! (I did go back and recover it.) It was a whirlwind that put me in tears at my second stop, breaking down into the arms of a friend. As she let me cry, I worked through the bag setup and got rid of the backpack, putting all necessary stuff right on the bike and my water pack directly into my jacket, which helped get rid of my back pain. A good cry, a deep breath, a hug of hope and I was off again. This was the closest I got to giving up, but I never doubted that I would complete it – just the momentary breakdowns that you rise from stronger”, she stated in an interview.
“There is something to be said for the openness of a motorcycle. Not just to nature, but society in general. When you remove the windows and doors you experience the journey at an entirely new level”, said Danell.
“Happenstance moments taught its lessons like when I crashed at slow speed on the ice, this gave me a chance to meet a driver coming around the corner to warn me about the blind curve ahead that met a steep downward hill with no guardrail and was covered in sheet ice. I would take my mini-crash over the possibilities of that hill any day. Three moments like this occurred during my year and became my most profound, even in their simplicity, because they taught me there is more out there in the universe and it will take care of you if you are open to it! I cannot think of a better word but to say at times this trip was magical in so many ways.” Danell’s story has inspired thousands of women and many thousands to come as more and more women read of her journey. Her record for the Longest Journey by Motorcycle in Single Country surpassed the previous record of 24,839 miles. I believe she set out to make sure, hers would never be broken.

Tomac Begins His March to the Top By The Mag Man, Kristin Gracy
W
hen dominating rider Ken Roczen went down with a season ending broken arm during Round #3, it left many of us wondering what rider could possibly stop Ryan Dungey from coasting to his third consecutive championship. Many riders have stepped up to voice their opinion that they are the one to do just that.
One thing is for sure, the AMA Monster Energy Supercross crowd grows each year and this series is getting its just due with prime LIVE showings on FOX and Fox Sports. Millions more fans are now seeing KTM rider and Dungey teammate Marvin Supercross as it happens that otherwise Musquin came forward in Dallas and took may not see it at all. Sponsors too are the top spot on the podium announcing attaching their names and brands to the that his time had come. His emotions series and it’s great to see it grow from overwhelmed him as he took time to enjoy when I started racing some 35-40 years reaching the top of the podium in tears. He followed that the next race by passing ago. Dungey on the last lap in Minneapolis 450SX Supercross Point Standings to take second on the podium. So some 1. Ryan Dungey (KTM) , 129 might say the man to halt Dungey could come from his own camp. 2. Marvin Musquin (KTM) , 11 3. Cole Seely (HON) , 107 Eli Tomac could also very well be the one. 4. Eli Tomac (KAW) , 100 He took the top spot in Minneapolis which 5. Jason Anderson (HUS) , 85 was his third win of the season. That same 3. David Millsaps (KTM) , 83 race also left Dungey in the third spot. 4. Cooper Webb (YAM) , 71 Only a couple of harsh finishes earlier in 5. Chad Reed (YAM) , 64 the year keep him from atop the points lead. Many say that Eli is the only one that AMA 250 EAST SUPERCROSS can stop Eli this year (now that Roczen is POINTS STANDINGS out). Several riders have gained confidence that they belong at the top; all the while Ryan Dungey seems to be rattled a little. Could it be that age is finally catching up to him as it does all the great riders? Only time will tell. Dungey stays in top shape and his riding skills are second to none. It’s going to get interesting to see is Cole Seely, Davi Millsaps, Jason Anderson or another rider can also step up and take a win this season.

Rookie sensation Cooper Webb crashed and was injured. His upcoming Atlanta race remains doubtful but at this writing, his team was optimistic on a quick return. Meanwhile in Minneapolis, Kawasaki rider Joey Savatgy kicked off the 250SX East season with a win. Jordon Smith took the Holeshot in the Main and finished second. Zach Osborne managed third place after going down in the final laps. March 2017

Everything You've Always Wanted to Know about Seats but Were Afraid to Ask
Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.
I
learned a lot about seats during the time I ran ROAR Motorcycles for Women in Daytona Beach. Many times the seat was extremely important in helping fit a motorcycle to a woman's body so sculpting was often very important. We had an inhouse seat person and also worked with several others who specialized in seats and they taught me a lot. Good seat people are hard to come by. A lot of people can throw a new cover on a seat but to properly sculpt and fit is a different story. And if you're going to cover a seat you might as well get a good fit while you're at it. For the women, we often covered the front of the saddle down (but not past the frame) so it was narrower and then bumped the back of the seat up a little so it moved them closer to the pedals and bars. Sometimes just an inch or two can make a huge difference in the comfort of the ride. A good saddle should feel like you're sitting in it, not just perching on it.
the seat and got just what I wanted. If you're really looking for a good fit, have them sculpt first and then sit on your bike with the seat on it before they put the cover on - if need be, it can be adjusted then. There are also pros and cons between leather and vinyl. A good marine grade vinyl (which is what you want) is almost indestructible and comes in a variety of colors that you won't be able to find in leather. It's easy to wipe down and keep clean. If it's good quality, fade will be minimal. Leather on the other hand, takes more upkeep, fades easier and can get stiff if not cared for properly. But sometimes, the look and feel is worth it. Leather does breathe more and has grain and texture that's difficult
to replicate in vinyl. A good seat job should flow with the bike, like a good pair of heels or a matching purse. It shouldn't just jump out on its own, it should flow with the look. It's one thing I really miss - helping women get a great look and a great fit. If you want to do any serious riding and are having trouble getting comfortable, the small amount of money you'll pay to get a good seat is worth it. You'll ride more often, you'll ride longer and you'll ride safer.
I also learned a lot about foam. Most manufacturer's use open celled foam. Feels cushier, but when the air goes out of those open cells, the ride gets pretty rough. Closed cell foam is denser and feels firmer but it's a ride that remains solid and you're happier for the long run. It also repels water better because the water doesn't get down into the foam. A lot of people wanted gel inserts and we encouraged them against it because, especially here in Florida with the heat, those gel inserts can go bad and get hard pretty quick. On my own bike, I added just a small layer of memory foam over the closed cell foam on

5th Annual Osceola Law Ride By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
n conjunction with their host sponsor Orlando HarleyDavidson South, the Blue Knights Florida 29-chapter held their 5th Annual Osceola Law Ride. The motto of the event was, “Don’t run from the Law, ride with them”. I love that! The ride benefited the families of Osceola County Officers injured or fallen in the line of duty. You could tell the community loves their law enforcement as hundreds came out to support this awesome cause. Lots of vendors were there and everyone enjoyed a great time. With your registration fee, riders received a free t-shirt, a continental breakfast, lunch and a collectable commemorative gift. Entertainment was provided by the Big Dawg & Paul show. Hundreds of dollars were raised and plans are already in the works for next year’s event.
