words from the publisher
Greetings from soggy east Tennessee! The south has been bombarded by rain these last few days and the creek on our property is normally a small babbling flow of water, but with all the rain falling over the last several days, it's turned into a raging rapid carrying lots of soil and small rocks. Our hillsides looked like they had rivers running through them and everything is a muddy mess now. However, this rain is needed for our plant life and after the drought last fall that killed most green things, it is very much welcomed. Now, to point out a word of caution for motorcycle riders in this area. All that water washes lots of soil, sand, and gravel onto the road surface and makes traveling on them treacherous. Please use a high level of caution when riding our beautiful country roads because you never know what will greet you as you round that next curve, curves that we love so much. If you hit a patch of sand or gravel in a curve, it will feel like you ran across ice and is not a fun experience. Motorcycle riders that visit our area and aren't familiar with the curvy roads need to be diligent when riding on them. We would hate to hear about someone traveling to our motorcycle mecca and end up going home with broken bones or worse. Hail is another of nature's beasts that can wreak havoc while riding. A small town in south middle Tennessee (Blanche) where my father lives, recently experienced a severe freak hailstorm. My father sought refuge in his storm shelter while his automobiles, home, out buildings, cows and grass received much damage and some may be a total loss.Yes, I mentioned grass as receiving damage. Not something you would think of as having damage but on a farm that raises grass fed cattle, grass is vital. My father has one of the top rated farms for grass in his area and now it looks like someone went over the grass with a mulcher. Every blade of grass is broken and chewed up. They are estimating anywhere from 70 to 100 MPH straight line winds that drove golf ball sized hail stones horizontally. The hail was 6-8" deep in some places and hadn't completely melted the next day. I feel bad for the cows being caught out in that storm, but can you imagine being caught out in that storm on your motorcycle and you had no where to take refuge? Wow! I can't imagine. Something to think about when planning your next trip, especially in the spring. We seem to have some mega hail storms around the month of April. Think about having a back up plan during bad weather on your outings and stay safe.

Harley-Davidson's® Street Rod 750 Hits the Pavement By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
arley-Davidson continues to produce motorcycle models aimed directly at the younger market. Their latest edition already seems to be hit. It unveiled the 2017 Harley-Davidson Street Rod 750 with design wording from the old V-Rod by bringing in a cross between a dragster and a flat-tracker motorcycle. Taking just a few ques from its sister, the Street 750, this HD has what a lot of riders prefer in an affordable Harley. The chassis changes move this it from cruiser territory into the sporty zone. Rake is steepened to 27 degrees from a more relaxed 32. Longer travel suspension raises ride height to increase cornering clearance (10 degrees more in both directions) and allow room to run the cast-aluminum 17-inch wheels front and rear. A longer swing-arm (again to accommodate the larger wheel) runs a pair of gas-charged, piggyback-reservoir shocks that allow for 4.6 inches of travel. The 43mm black-anodized inverted fork has a similar travel increase and contributes to the much beefier front end look. A pair of 300mm front discs increases braking power with an option to add ABS.
midrange where you’d like it.” Redline is increased from 8,000 rpm to 9,000, with an attendant 18 percent power boost on the top end. Claimed output is 68.4 horsepower at 8,750 rpm and 47.2 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. “We are reaching a customer who maybe had a fondness for Harley-Davidson but may not have found the bike in our lineup to meet their needs,” said Jeff Strunk of product planning. “It’s aimed at primarily a younger crowd, frequently folks living in a more urban environment, looking for a way to get around in a more exciting way.” Added Matt King of media relations, the model is built to “appeal to a specific demographic in a space where we don’t really have a product.” A re-designed tail-section now features LED tail-lights and turn-signals, with a standard halogen bulb up front. Three color choices are available for the 2017 HarleyDavidson Street Rod 750; Vivid Black, Charcoal Denim, or Olive Gold.
Lead designer Chetan Shedjale said, “American racing is something very inspirational to the world, so this was a key factor in styling inspiration and resulted in “Following the chassis, we focused on substantial changes to the look. The bike the powertrain,” said engineer Brian has a ‘bulldog’ feel because of the front Dondlinger of the new High Output end changes. Thicker fork legs. Everything Revolution X 750 engine. “We’ve got 8 was looked at to be performance oriented, percent more torque across the rev range. Cruise on this bike around 3,600-3,700 rpm street-fighter inspired but with a Harley image and Americana.” and at 8 percent more torque than street starts at 3,500 and goes all the way to 7,500 This latest Harley-Davidson creation is rpm so you really feel the torque in the in your local dealers showroom now, and

Buying a First Bike and Cell Phone Abuse By Jim Leggett
F
ollowing a brisk morning ride, I was coasting my vintage G1100 into the garage when our next door neighbor flagged me down “Hi Jim” said she “I’ve been trying to catch you. Garret (her husband) just bought motorcycle…I think it’s a Harley Sportster.” She wasn’t sure which model, but he was getting it from the local Harley-Davidson® dealer; I know everyone there, so a call to the sales manager filled me in while elaborating on their new warranty service which sounds great to me. “Best of all he gets a Warranty Forever” the sales manager explained. “Even on a used machine?” I asked. “Yes, we have the area’s exclusive franchise for this superb deal…and at no cost to the buyer” - on used machines too - excluded models on the Warranty Forever are the XG500 and XG750 – also, the bike can’t be more than five years old.
Warranty Forever pays for repairs to the power train as long as you own the machine, subject to your following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance – either at the dealership, or any pre-authorized facility of your choice nationwide – thereafter power train components are covered forever. (www.warrantyforever.com) The local Harley-Davidson® dealer inspects preowned machines through their own high tech and rigorous safety and mechanical inspection so he landed a used machine with like-new machine warranty advantages. Looking over the machine I noticed a couple of things he may wish to change: straight handle bars, I thought too low for his height and weight, uncomfortable, leaning too far forward. He plans to replace the handlebars, add risers and

more pull back. Also the customized speedometer location was not easy to see; I’d moved it back to original H-D specification. The pillion seat is way too small for passenger comfort; however that can wait until he’s racked up a few solo miles. I also suggested he make a spare key; hidden, Velcro or taped, inside a side cover so you never get locked out. Since he has never ridden a motorcycle I suggested he sign up for the H-D dealership new rider course; a three-day class, an intelligent must for beginners - and valuable refresher skills tune up, if you’ve been off bikes for any length of time. And, completion of the course could save cash on insurance premiums too. Rider Safety Courses include use of dealership-owned machines, lightweights with ample crash bar protection front and rear in case you drop it. Pre-ride classroom instruction includes current state law, essential safety skills, advice on protective riding gear, what to wear and why, plus essential knowhow on becoming a proficient and safe rider. Remember what my license tester told me; “You passed your basic test to be granted a motorcycle licensee…now, you’ll spend the rest of your riding life perfecting your skills!” My survival tip; flashing your headlight to high
beam at every intersection, slip roads too where vehicles coming from you right join the road. In particular whenever you spot cars turning left across your path - even with headlight flashing beam to beam many drivers don’t see motorcycles – I know this first hand; brakes locks hard, rear tire skidding. I’ve collided with an errant car’s right side, bent the front wheel and broke my right big toe, painful, but I was lucky thanks to sturdy leather boots, leather jacket, gloved and my trusty Bell crash helmet. Proper riding gear is a must for anyone planning the safe enjoyments of motorcycling. Although I still prefer black gear, be it may notso-wild-one vintage black leather jacket ala Marlon Brando and half face black and white helmet adorned with a suitable silver CAMERON Highlanders regimental badge, on long rides with proficiently mature motorcyclist pals - at speed limit plus a few - my armored jacket and full face helmet is what I wear, adding my bright yellow day-glow with reflective stripes over jacket vest… one can never be to visible.

SMART PHONES + DUMBELLS = FATAL MIX No phone call or text in the world is worth taking eyes off the road – let it wait! Just as I was about to rant about growing selfishness of cell phone misuse, the latest horrific outrage came over the wire; March 31 - HOUSTON (AP) — the driver of a pickup truck that collided with a church minibus in rural Texas, killing 13 people, apologized after the crash and acknowledged he had been texting while driving, a witness said Friday. Elsewhere, I read some 6,000 pedestrian cell-phone-zombies died in 2016, not including one brainless biker

killed - texting while riding his motorcycle. What was he thinking? Growing up in Glasgow, Scotland, even as children, we considered it “natures culling” when young and old people who lacked the basic common sense of staying safe. I recall pre-cell phone age unfortunates who walked in front of buses or fell through thin ice and drowned. A former girlfriend’s teen sister died after her boyfriend looked away from the road for seconds to tune the car radio, ramming a telephone pole. Smart phones carnage outnumbers terrorist atrocities. I suggest cell phone distracted drivers pose bigger risks to bikers than drunk drivers, who may at least be watching the road. I’ve swerved, braked, sped past and cussed cell addicted drivers oblivious to their surroundings. Missed green lights, too, while some distracted driver imagines he’s in a parking lot, or stops dead on turning lanes just to add stress to bikers staying alive.
Riders are more likely to get hurt due to cell phone misuse than any other distractions. I have a cell phone. However it’s powered OFF when I’m bend-swinging challenging back roads. In my book the joys of motorcycling mean getting away from technology, severing all electronic tethers. I wonder might fines ($300 at present in the UK) plus massive insurance premium hikes for anyone convicted of using a cell phone while driving, plus points on driving record, help deter offenders? Meantime, use you wide angle vision and be ready to take evasive action! photowriterjim@gmail.com

he 2017 Gulf Coast Ladies Motorcycle Rally was pure funin-the-sun during April Fool’s Weekend in Panama City Beach, Florida. Attendees rode into “The World’s Most Beautiful Beaches” south from Atlanta and came up north from Ft. Myers… and Florida cities in between. Hosted by HarleyDavidson of Panama City Beach, the Thunder Angels and volunteers, this event kicked off springtime with beautiful weather, live music, great vendors and a clan of happy women doing what they love to do: RIDE! On Friday, March 31 the rally kicked off with a “Final Friday Bike Night” party featuring old country greats Tex & the South Forty, an Outpost favorite. The cold beer was flowing, served up by American Legion Post 402 & VFW Post 10555, with free Craft Beer Tastings by local brewery Nivol Brewing Co. Saturday morning started with a beautiful North Florida sunrise, coffee and camaraderie. At 10 AM the Thunder Angels lead a Guided Scenic Ride that headed west to three points: the nature-packed Conservation Park; the stunningly beautiful Eden Gardens in South Walton County; and the biker-favorite Outpost off Highway 20. Attendees returned to Harley in the early afternoon and were treated to a free bike wash, a tasty lunch donated by Chicken Salad Chick, a ladies-themed vendor village packed with apparel, jewelry, health products, pin striping, sunglasses and more. The Don Pedigo Band headed down from Nashville for two Satur-

day afternoon concerts, and Barbara Jones of the Thunder Angels lead a Storytelling Hour on the Chill Deck, where rally-goers gathered ‘round and swapped riding tales. A fiveclass bike competition took place in the late afternoon with home-made trophies by BC Custom Metalworks. That evening the fun progressed to Newby’s for live music by everyone’s favorite local reggae band, Heritage. On Sunday morning the sunshine continued to sparkle while Night Al Productions supplied karaoke on the Harley Stage, and Rally volunteers served up mimosas and breakfast burritos on the Big Deck. By 12 noon most riders hit the road via one of four routes: Highways 231, 77, 79 or Old 98. On the way home ladies were asked to take a few selfie photos to later post onto the Gulf Coast Ladies Motorcycle Rally Facebook page with fun captions. Throughout the weekend, a photo competition was taking place behind the scenes. Ladies were asked to take photos all weekend and post to the Facebook page. The photos could be submitted into one of four classes of photos, and the best in each class won a prize. Most Scenic won a wine basket donated by Triple H Dustless Blasting. Sportiest won a 4-team Golf Basket from Holiday Golf Club in Panama City Beach. Goofiest won a one-hour massage donated by local PCB masseuse Tom Nummy; and Most Unique won a two night stay at Copperhead Lodge in Blairsville, GA, donated by Michelle Evans. To view winners as well as all rally photos, go to Facebook/sandandsass.

Super Heroes Ride for Rylee By Liz Cunningham
C
ancer sucks… plan and simple. It attacks everyone, including children. It affects everyone around that person; family, friends and in the motorcycle community, even strangers. A little girl named Rylee, just 5-years old in 2016, was taken to the emergency room complaining of a headache and being generally lethargic. Through the course of testing at the local hospital, a brain tumor was discovered and Rylee was then transported to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, FL. The following morning, Rylee was rushed into surgery to a malignant brain tumor called Medulloblastoma. Many months of chemo and radiation were to follow. It affected everyone around this little girl and her family. Her battle began. She has fought with this since then and fights for her right to live a healthy life, to grow up like other children and to be able to help others in need. On a brighter day in April, several “Super Heroes” came out to help her and her family battle this terrible disease. With many months of planning and coordinating with Children R Our Future of Volusia County, Constance Jones, put together Ride for Rylee Poker Run and Concert covering three counties in Florida. Over 400 Bikes participated, family, friends, strangers, several SBMag Road Crew, but all of them are Super Heroes in Rylee’s eyes.
Thousands of dollars were raised to help with continuing medical bills. A great big thank you to all those who helped make this event for a special little girl a huge success with their dedication, planning and generous hearts. Thanks to you, Rylee has her own Super Hero logo now. If you would like to send cards or a donation, please send it to: Rylee’s Mailbox, P.O. Box 530095, Debary, FL 32753-0095.
Dressed in Marvel & DC Comic Super Hero attire, motorcycle riders from around the area came out for two separate rides; East Coast Volusia County ride began at Rudy’s Bar & Grill in Holly Hills, riders made their way to several stops; Beach Front Grille, Frank’s Place, Main Street Station. The West Coast Volusia ride began at Muldoon’s and made stops at Shovelhead Lounge, Buzzard’s Roost and the Nice and Easy Oyster Bar. Both rides ended at OB’s in Deland escorted by Rylee herself with her father by her side. The Kings of Chaos, Deisel and others put on a concert in her honor.

YOU GO, GIRL! W
hether you're content to sit on a back of a bike or enjoy taking command of the road yourself, there are more and more women who are experiencing the joys of motorcycling every year. You may be like one of the many women I've talked to who aren't quite sure if they would want their own bike or not. I've got three words for you, motorcycle education class. They are taught all over the country, normally take two days of your time, are relatively inexpensive (a whole lot cheaper than buying a bike and reselling it if it's not for you) and use small bikes usually around 250cc's. Right now one out of every three students are women, so you'll be in great company. My own theory on why so many more women are driving their own bikes these days is the fact that the classes have saved women from being at the mercy of well-intentioned husbands and boyfriends trying to teach their women to drive on over-sized bikes while being scared to death that their prized possession will be dropped and mess up their custom paint job. Needless to say the tension involved here could not only take away from a woman's first driving experience, but it also could lead to divorce and break-ups. So to save the relationship, many women have simply opted to stay on the back of the bike. But with classes available, many women are making the shift to their own bikes with relatively little relationship damage. As I was writing this article, I thought back to some of my earlier experiences. I had ridden smaller bikes as a young girl, but at 5' tall (and no I didn't forget the inches) when I got on my ex-husband's first Sportster, the only way I could drive it was to have him on the back so he could put his feet down when I needed to stop. Needless to say, I was young and foolish and this is not the recommended way to go. It was like flying an airplane and not quite sure if your landing gear was going to come down or not. Now remember, I said I was young and foolish, now I

Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc. would never recommend anyone to ride a bike that both their feet couldn't be firmly planted when they came to a stop. So just remember those three words, "motorcycle education class". You don't have to make a decision to drive for the rest of your life. You don't have to decide what kind of bike to buy. Those decisions can come later. Right now, your only decision is to take the class. So what are you waiting for, find a class near you and get signed up!
All the Difference in the World Let's face it, because motorcycles predominantly have been built for men, a lot of the bikes don't fit women the way they should. Most women ride perched on the nose of the seat rather than sitting comfortably down in the seat. That's a starting indicator, can you sit comfortably in the seat or do you feel like you're nearly sitting on the gas tank? I'm going to give you a couple of rules of thumb on how to determine if a bike fits you or not. First and foremost, when you come to a stop, can you plant both feet firmly on the pavement with your knees slightly bent? That is of upmost importance in maintaining control of your bike. There are lowering kits and other things you can do to drop your bike a couple of inches, if necessary. Secondly, are your arms fully extended when you're simply sitting on the bike? If so, you'll need to either get extenders on
the handlebars, a different set of bars, or a different bike. Now be careful here, because a different set of bars can totally change the handling of the bike. The reason you don't want to be fully extended just sitting on the bike is because then you have no turning radius. You will get into situations where you have more turn than you have arm which can be dangerous. Being overextended, also causes upper back, neck and shoulder strain. Your arms should have a slight bend at the elbows and be relaxed from the shoulders. Thirdly, can you sit on the bike with legs comfortably bent and your feet on the pegs or footboards? I switched to footboards several years ago and would never go back, especially if you're going to do any distance riding. You should be able to shift and brake without having your legs totally extended. One last thing, the width of the bike is especially important for women. The bike can look low, but if it's too wide, it won't be comfortable. It will feel like the frame and seat cut you in the upper thigh. Trying a bike on for size is like trying on shoes. They may look great but if they are the least bit uncomfortable when you just try them on, what about after a day of walking? Ouch!!! You may sit on a bike and think you can live with it, but what about a couple hundred miles later? I remember the first time I rode a bike that actually fit me. It was a whole new experience! I remember thinking to myself, that's the way most guys feel when they ride. It was awesome to ride hundreds of miles and at the end of the day not have any sore muscles, and I am in my sixties. So, whether you're young or old, I encourage you girls, ride a bike that fits you, it makes all the difference in the world!

Eli Tomac DOMINATES from 15th Place By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
T
his 2017 Monster Energy Supercross season is all but over. Everyone thought at the beginning that Ken Roczen had the championship made, but when he went down with a season ending injury, everyone knew Dungey had it in the bag. Everyone but Eli Tomac who was, at the time, all but eliminated due to a couple of crashes that set him way back in the points standing. That is, until Tomac began his assault on Dungey and points lead by winning. Eli Tomac demonstrated he has the will, the talent and the speed to win the championship. At Salt Lake City and round #15, again a bad started put him in 15th place and Ryan Dungey in the lead. Dungey took off and left the field, but there was only one problem, the “field” did not include Tomac. Eli Tomac took his Monster Energy Kawasaki 450 to heights none thought possible. He was in the ZONE!
took second place from Jason Anderson and set his sights on Dungey. Tomac then closed in at a rate of half a second a lap on Dungey before finally making the move for the lead. At the races end, Tomac had a 6.386 second lead over second place Dungey. Dungey had no response for the new championship leader and was obviously shaken up over how 450 Podium everything unfolded, especially after finding out Tomac came from 15th and won with a lot of room to spare. Tomac has won nine of the last 12 races and now in the points lead for the first time this season. Meanwhile in the 250SX West class, Justin Hill won his first championship as he powered back by Martin Davalos by a wheel Tomac passing Dungey for the lead at the finish line and get on the podium, just enough to take home Salt Lake City Official 450SX results: the championship. 1. Eli Tomac
From 15th place, Tomac’s lap times were better than anyone’s including Dungey’s, who was tied with Tomac for the championship point’s lead coming into the night. Tomac blazed through the field passing one rider after another. With the race half over, Tomac Justin Hill and his new #1 plate
