words from the publisher

Hey Folks,

It's been over two years since mine and my husband's motorcycle accident caused by a vehicle that pulled out in front of us and left the scene. The impact knocked me unconscious for a couple of hours and then at the hospital in the Emergency Room I was in and out of consciousness. I had a brain contusion, 6 fractured ribs, a partially collapsed lung and other injuries. My DOT helmet took a good whack, but protected me well. Most of you know our story, but the reason I am writing is because it has taken over two years of being in the hospital, seeing doctors, doing physical therapy, going to a personal trainer and just trying to get back to where I was before. My motorcycle insurance has paid $0 on my medical bills. We were forced to sue our own insurance company over bills that should have been paid by them; our own insurance company actually hired a lawyer to fight against us in court. My husband is writing an in-depth article on our plight and plans to publish it once the case is over. No doubt that he will reveal which insurance company we are dealing with and the incorrect statements they made about our insurance coverage. The reason I am writing about this is to let everyone know to get your insurance checked. The insurance sales person will not tell you what is in your best interest; they may only tell you what you want to hear and they might not tell you what you need to know. You may not find out what was in your best interest until after something bad happens. Research your insurance coverage. Don't wait until after the fact, like we did. If your insurance company treats you the way ours treated us, then by all means make sure to hire an attorney; it's the best way to protect your rights. Keep Your Knees In The Breeze! March Moto Madness Invades Tellico Plains The Dual Sport Season Begins

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he 2013 March Moto Madness began as last year’s event did with one exception....the number of people and bikes doubled. Every year the number of riders continues to increase for several reasons but the biggest one would be the location. The Tellico Plains area offers some of the best riding choices anywhere for all types of riding: sport, street, dual sport & single track. For $45 the riders each enjoyed 3 nights camping (port-a-johns, showers, water, RV sites with hook-ups), morning coffee, Thursday pot luck dinner, Friday and Saturday breakfast and great cookout dinners plus Sunday Huevos Rancheros breakfast. They also are entered in field events and door prize giveaways. In Tellico plains, the group’s choice for headquarters has been the site of the Tellico Biker Rally on Steer Creek Road. From there, the group enjoyed

8 - Southern Biker Magazine

plenty of riding off road on site trails, logging roads and creeks. Cherohala Skyway, Deals Gap/Tail of the Dragon, Hwy 64 following the Ocoee River along with many other sinuous and scenic roads were left to the street riders and guided tours. Watching the competitions for dual sport dominance was really great. I almost got on one to try it out until I saw a couple riders go down in the creek. The water was about 45 degrees! 5060 riders cheered each one on as they motored thru the land-creek-landcreek-land designed course with dirt mounds, rocks, sand, mud and water. The object was not to put your feet down on the entire course. High lights of the evenings were great cookouts and the campfire discussions and recalling the day’s rides and events. A good menu has always been an integral part of MMM and this year’s spread was no exception. Local vendors, Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters, GSM Moto Rentals and Dual Sport Touring were among the many businesses that donated door prizes. The top prize this year was Klim Technical Riding Gear. Next year’s event is already getting noticeable attention and the group of

dual sport riders should once again increase in numbers as this event is becoming the go to event of the year. For more information on the event and the group of guys that put this on, go to: www.MarchMotoMadness.com or email Kev95GS@gmail.com to be included on the email list for the announcement of the 2014 March Moto Madness Adventure Rally.

James DeCoursey Poker Run

We Were “Lucky” to Have Known Him

N

ot many people have as many friends from as many different backgrounds, from so many different lifestyles and from so many different walks of life, as did James “Lucky” DeCoursey. From the 300 or so people that showed up for the poker run and concert in his honor, you could tell his life’s word was honest friendship, the compassion to help others and the love to ride. I met James through my niece, Jessica, at Ultimate Cycles back in the day and we’ve been friends ever since. I never saw him without a smile (or a can of PBR), but his constant willingness to make sure the people around him were smiling and enjoying life seemed to me to be what we would all want to do. As we discussed

one day, life is too short not to enjoy it with everyone. James passed away after a motorcycle accident, but it’s evident, he will never be forgotten. We didn’t say goodbye, only, we’ll see you later. His life and his heart joins ours in making sure his wife, Jenifier and the children will remain a permanent part of all of our families. From Tom Blevins: “I’m proud to have been a part of the most successful poker run and benefit I’ve ever been associated with this past Sunday, in honor of my late friend, James “Lucky” DeCoursey. We raised a lot of money, brought people together and brought out the best from everyone. It makes my heart jump when I think

of what we accomplished in such a short amount of time, and I’ve had several people already thank me for making it happen, but I need to take this opportunity to explain. I don’t deserve the credit... Mike Caron from American Cycles, Cindy Kile and

McKinn-Finn European Tour (Part 3 of 3)

Getting up and getting ready the next day was easy as we had proper motivation. Our destination for the day was number 1 on our to-do list; Passo del Stelvio, or Stelvio Pass. Robert had been to Italy before and ridden this magnificent road, seemingly built just for motorcycles and driving enthusiasts everywhere. We approached the pass from the north and with the increasing vegetation the road actually snuck up on us. We were riding uphill, but suddenly, the road became twisting and sinewy then the curve markers made it clear we were on target. The road up the pass was much narrower than I had imagined and the only thing between you and a fatal fall below was a knee high rock wall. Even with the smaller cars found in Europe, two cars meeting often required both cars coming to a near stop and passing with mere inches between them. However, being on the bikes gave us plenty of room and the drivers over there are courteous and polite and give you plenty of room. It was a joy driving over there where the majority of the drivers actually “know” how to drive.

20 - Southern Biker Magazine

To try to put into words the thrill and joy of riding Stelvio Pass would tax my already narrow ability. To put into words riding Stelvio on a BMW 1600 GT would be impossible. Silky smooth engine, exhaust note sounding like a Formula 1 engine, and the handling of a sport bike is what I had under me and, believe me, it LOVED the Stelvio Pass. At the top of the pass was a small hamlet, quaint and peaceful despite the multiple dozens of motorcycles and sport cars assembled there. Also on hand was a street vendor, in the traditional lederhosen, selling fresh Brats on fresh baked bread. If you go, be sure to get yours with mustard and kraut. Standing on top of the world in Italy, eating some of Bavaria’s finest fare after riding the most impressive road I’ve ever seen made for a great day. If the day was great, the night was going to get even better. Robert and I made our way down the south slope of the pass through Bormio. Just as every town is in Europe, Bormio is quaint, peaceful and charming. Outside of Bormio, we rode and I noticed I was

By Greg McKinney

getting extremely sleepy, even though it was just 2:00 pm. Robert flashed his lights and I pulled over to check on him.

McKinn-Finn European Tour (Part 3 of 3)

...continued

He informed me he was very sleepy as well. Apparently the adrenaline rush we had on the Stelvio road had worn off leaving us exhausted. We decided a rest stop was mandatory and I started looking for a suitable place for a break. Remember, in Europe, convenience stores aren’t easily found so ristorantes, and/or Gasthauses are what to watch for. With caution, we rode to Livogna, Italy and inside a curve on the road, by a tranquil pond was a new ristorante and gasthaus. We parked the bikes and wearily walked in. We were greeted by the bar maid and hotel owner, neither of which spoke English. Fortunately my limited high school German was sufficient to get us each a beverage of our choice; two if you are keeping score. Robert said he was too tired to continue and I checked on lodging. Two of the nicest, cleanest rooms we had were offered for only 60 Euro each and they included dinner that night, breakfast the following morning and garage space for our bikes. The front desk clerk did speak some English, which helped, but most of all everyone at the establishment was glad to see us and gave us absolute first class service. While Robert rested, I rode the 25 km back to Bormio and rode the Stelvio Pass again. It had rained earlier so there was virtually no traffic anymore and the road was all mine. I made my way back to the hotel by 7:30 and met Robert in the dining room for the complementary 5 course, 5star meal served to us that evening. They were so very generous with the portions that Robert and I turned down course 2 and 4; the salad and carne scaloppini. The rest was more than enough and the vanilla and chocolate gelato they gave us for the finale was nothing short of amazing. If you do make it to Italy on a tour, be sure to look up the Ristorante in Livogna. It is top notch, hands down the finest night we had on our trip. And Passo del Stelvio is only 25 km away! Suiting up after our stay in Livogna was hard; partly because we were still stuffed to the gills from the previous evening’s dinner and partly because this was our last full day of riding in Europe. Today’s destination was back to Interlaken, Switzerland and the Best Western at the foot of the Jungfrau Mountain. The ride was, as usual, breath taking and every turn of the road opened up another panoramic vista. Soon after leaving Italy, the skies grew grey and we coped with wet roads and

22 - Southern Biker Magazine

rain. As before, the sure footed BMWs with their ABS and ASC (traction control) kept us firmly planted to the road and allowed us to enjoy the curves and splendor of the Alps. Interlaken was in view by mid afternoon and we checked into the Best Western and were shown the garage in which we could park our bikes out of the weather. Our last day of riding in Europe was a short one. After breakfast we went to the shops in Interlaken where Robert and I made more purchases and mounted up for the final leg; Interlaken to Thun, Switzerland. A kind gentleman gave us a picturesque route to take that was well off the beaten path, and equally hard to navigate. After getting us lost no less than three times, I finally found it and it was worth the effort. Roads so narrow that two bikes would have a hard time passing. Fortunately there were numerous pull offs for us when we met the occasional local resident. But narrow as the roads were, the payoff was the scenery on the back side of the Jungfrau mountain and the valley leading back into Thun. The bikes had to be turned in by noon and we made it there with only a minute or two to spare (by design of course). We turned the bikes in unscathed and got our deposits back, ate a great lunch at the diner in the bike shop, caught the train and headed back to Zurich for the return flight the next morning. At the end of our ten day odyssey, I managed to log 2450 km on my 1600GT. Robert had slightly less as he rested the day I rode the Stelvio again. The bikes performed without fault and we certainly made the right choice with the BMWs. The Europeans are so incredibly biker friendly it was amazing. Merchants would allow us to park on the sidewalk in front of their business, we were directed down sidewalks by the local constabulary to avoid traffic jams, at road construction stops we were waved to the front of the line and at each evening the innkeepers would volunteer secluded, guarded parking. If you have ever wanted to tour Europe but have been intimidated, don’t be. It was my first time there and even though Robert had been before on guided tours we made good, solid plans for the beginning and end of the trip and counted on our adventurous spirit for the nine days in the middle. We made it just fine. If your spirit isn’t that in tune to adventure, by all means make reservations and take a guided tour with one of the many, fine motorcycle tour companies advertising in this magazine. Either way, you’ll be treated to an experience like never before and you’ll thank yourself many times over for it. May, 2013

Kristin with Preacher Morgan blessing her and her bike.

Motorcycle Riders Blessed at the 3rd Annual OAA Bike Blessing

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

D

uring a week of rain, Preacher Morgan Clough prayed to the Lord for his divine help in having a good sunny day for the bike blessing. Like Moses did with the Red Sea, the clouds parted and the traditional Easter Weekend bike blessing ride went

on as scheduled. The crowd was down from the prior year, partly because those “great” weather men said there will be rain. But the Lord had a better idea, to have Preacher Morgan and his prayer warriors to bless each and every bike for the upcoming season.

Motorcycle Riders Blessed at the 3rd Annual OAA Bike Blessing

Next year’s OAA Bike Blessing is already in the works and as I see it, it should be HUGE.

...continued

The opening ceremonies included singing of the National Anthem, words of blessings by Preacher Morgan and then I was honored to be asked to say the blessing over everyone before they headed out on their ride. The riders went to their motorcycles and each bike was blessed and the riders received Grace for the year’s riding season. The 90 mile ride featured a scenic, five county route through the East Tennessee countryside. On their return, they were treated to a pig roast and entertainment from the group CAB. Door prizes were given out and riders left on their way home. On a side note, my wife’s (Kristin) motorcycle was having work done on it by Wayne Porter and she was not available to go on the ride. Wayne, Preacher Morgan and I surprised her days later with her finished bike and a personal blessing at our house. What an awesome day!

Food for Thought

by Barry Duncan A big thumbs up to the Wildcat H.O.G. Chapter for leading me to the best BBQ in Raleigh, NC. The Pit Authentic Barbecue is located at 328 W Davie Street in downtown Raleigh. It has been featured on Man vs. Food and a rib challenge winner on Throw Down with Bobby Flay. They offer Texas style brisket, baby back and spare ribs, fried chicken, chopped and pulled BBQ and even BBQ tofu for the fancy biker. For starters try the pumpkin skillet cornbread with maple butter at $3.99. It’s served in a skillet and has great flavor. The BBQ soul rolls are chopped pork, cabbage collards and candied carrots with special sauce at $6.95. Every meal starts off with biscuits and hush puppies. I had to try the big boy meat combo at $28.95 that included chopped pork BBQ, beef brisket, BBQ chicken and both types of ribs. For side dishes, I had black eyed peas and cabbage collard greens. The feast was worth the trip. The pit is open seven days a week from 11:00 am and closes at 10:00 pm except Fri and Sat (closes at 11:00 pm). Here is a basic BBQ rub recipe I use for ribs and shoulders. 1/2 cup brown sugar 1⁄4 cup paprika 1 tbl black pepper 1 tbl salt 1 tbl chili powder 1 tbl garlic powder 1 tbl onion powder 1 tsp cayenne

I like to add just a little cayenne to mine.
