Hey Folks,
We hope you are doing well, as usual. Hope you got to attend Biketoberfest and Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rallies last month. If you didn't make it, you missed two awesome events! Hurricane Matthew blew through Daytona Beach, FL and left many places without power right before Biketoberfest, but the city and businesses pulled together and made it a great event after all. Hurricane Matthew wasn't going to stop this great rally from happening! Part of A1A between Ormond Beach and Flagler Beach was washed out to sea but that just meant people had to take another route, not a big deal. Some businesses got their power back on the day before the event kick-off, which meant a lot of hard work to catch up on tasks. The weather during Biketoberfest couldn't have been better, thankfully! Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Biketoberfest, so you will definitely want to be there for that event! It will be one for the history books for sure! Thunder Beach was FANTASTIC! Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, beautiful bikes! What else could make it better? Free concerts with awesome bands is what makes it better! Panama City Beach was packed with lots of people this year. It was the largest I've ever seen. The Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show at Pier Park is one of our favorite bike show venues. This rally we had over 50 beautiful bikes registered. Judging was challenging and I'm soooo glad I did not have to judge these bikes. They are truly works of art and expressions of their owners. Each one of them is a winner to me. I am partial to the Deluxe motorcycle and there were some amazing looking entries. We met a couple after the show, saw their beautiful bikes and asked why they didn't enter their bikes in the show. They were from Birmingham and on the way to the show, one of the bikes had some issues with the clutch and by the time they got it fixed, the show was over. We felt bad for these two very nice bikers and took photos of them to include in the magazine. They do have some kickin' motorcycles! See for yourself!

AIMExpo 2016, A Powersports’ Playground By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
f you love gas powered motorsports and even some high tech electrical speed, then the 2016 American International Motorcycle Expo in Orlando, Florida is where you should have been. There was the entire gamut of the motorcycle industry on hand, inside and outside of the Orange County Convention Center. Inside over 500 vendors were on hand to show their new 2017 products coming or their products that on currently on the market. OEM motorcycle manufacturers and all kinds of aftermarket companies were present with some very outstanding booths. Despite Hurricane Matthew hitting the east coast of Florida just days before, thousands of motorcycles of all manufacturers and riders from eight-80 years old filled the parking lot, creating a sea of motorcycles that was something to behold. The AIMExpo is a powersports playground for the whole family. Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA) and Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) also set up in the Outdoor Off-road section had young riders take part in the training course, learning the proper safety and riding techniques from certified instructors on youth ATVs. Strider bikes mini obstacle course was set up for some of the smaller attendees to hit the jumps and the course on their new Strider bikes. Safety products including helmets and riding gear were available to see and try on as were many other products to go with every facet of any powersports division. Yamaha debut its new R6 while Suzuki unveiled its own GSXR1000. Whether you got to ride on some the industry’s best products in the Outdoors Off-road demo area or some of the newest street models, I’m sure you are now contemplating buying one of them. For 2017, the AIMExpo moves from Orlando to the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH and set for September 21-24. The reason for the move is the fact that 41% of all U.S. dealerships are located within 500 miles of the new venue. However, Biketoberfest brought a couple hundredthousand riders (event attendees) within an hour or so drive. Whether it was a good move, we will see. For more information, go to www.aimexpousa.com.

Fight Like Aiden III By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
A
small boy drowns and all hope is lost. It took 20 minutes to resuscitate to get a pulse, but all hope was lost. The doctors told his mother that he would be in a vegetative state his entire life and all hope was lost…All hope, lost…except a mother’s love for her child. There are miracles out there in this world and when you see one, it will have you believing. Aiden is one of those miracles. The doctors will never have the last say… God will. Today, we fight like Aiden to help his family help him, fight the fight. With the help of hyperbaric chamber (oxygen) treatments and thousands of prayers, Aiden is slowly coming around in the hopes of having at least somewhat of a normal life, but he is fighting. His smile is contagious too. The Fight Like Aiden Ride III was hosted by a group known as RRR (Triple R). Most of them ride motorcycles, but they all come together to organize this ride each year and wrap their arms around a little boy and his family. Bikers have the biggest hearts and are usually the ones called on first to help raise money for a charity or someone in need. Well, it takes very special people to take the lead and make it happen. Route the ride, get sponsors, get door prizes, auction items, places to begin and end. And these great people made it happen. I give two thumbs up to this group! Aiden has now begun to try to walk and it reaches the soul of people to see his progress. “(It) never stops amazing me. These steps of progress are why we do what we can for Aiden and we will continue to do so”, said Richard Ford. For now, Aiden is showing great progress and he shows no sign of stopping the fight. I don’t think his supporters will ever stop hoping, believing…and fighting, like Aiden.

Nothing Says Party like "The Boogie Too" By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
S
ome folks rolled in early and the line to get into the event was sometimes long, but the end result was worth it. I believe this was one of the largest attended Boogie Too events ever. Thousands came to attend and take part of everything the Boogie Too had to offer. The main stage, vendor row, Amberland, Scooters Bar & Grill Exit 60 band and the entire countryside of the Boogie Campground was PACKED with folks that came to party for the four-day music event. Amber & Herbert continue to outdo themselves, coming up with lots of new games and bringing in top entertainment. There were vendors for everything you could think of and then some as vendor row was constantly full of customers. Old friends and new ones took advantage of getting trophies and medals for winning biker games and some of the crazy contests. The hot, flame-twirling girl put on an awesome display of talent. The bands did a good job of keeping the music flowing and the headliner act Exit 60 blew the roof off the stage on Saturday night to the wee hours of Sunday morning. From the stage, it looked like a sea of folks all the way into vendor’s row. A few rally goers got “Clarkaneezed” when they over did the partying just a little. But they too got the “I Survived the Boogie Too” t-shirts. Next year’s events are being planned and bands are getting scheduled so make sure to put all of the 2017 Boogie events on your calendar!

V13ION… Even Bikers Can Get the Blues By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
V
13ION began as an afterthought; an afterthought when a father lost his son. I could not begin to tell you how losing a child would feel and I pray to God that I never do. I wouldn’t know where to start if my own child took his or her life. Maybe someone had a vision to bring about awareness to others. Chuck Lambert: “I lost my oldest son Chad “Chubb’s” Lambert to suicide on his 36th birthday on May 22, 2010. Chad was a tattoo artist and avid motorcyclist. After losing Chad I wanted to get involved in trying to raise awareness for suicide prevention. I attended several suicide “Out of the Darkness” walks, went to several survivors’ meetings, they were just too depressing. I didn’t want to see doves released and hear harps playing and I sure didn’t want to relive a funeral service each time. I wanted to celebrate life and help show folks that life is worth living and that NO ONE should ever feel alone and helpless. Since Chad & I shared the love of two wheels I decided I would put something together in the motorcycle & tattoo community to help fight the epidemic, instead of mourning, we could celebrate life doing what we love… riding motorcycles.” Chad ’s favorite number was 13 so I created V13ION in his honor to raise awareness for depression, PTSD and suicide prevention. Our goal is to remove the stigma associated with the disease of depression. Educate folks that PTSD is not limited to our military but to anyone that has experienced trauma. We lose more lives to suicide than we do to homicides or auto accidents. We lose more veterans in a single year to suicide than we have in 15 years of both the OEF & OIF wars. If we want to stop the epidemic, we must get involved and “do something!”

The V13ION Ride was born and OH HOW IT HAS GROWN! Harley-Davidson dealers around America have embraced this ride and some make it their own. Tennessee H-D dealers recently held their rides and all ended up in the mountains of Tellico Plains, TN for an all you can eat, Bologna & Blues Ride. More than 400 riders from across the state of TN, GA, NC and SC converged onto the home of Mickey Fouts (home to the Tellico Biker Rally & March Moto Madness) to celebrate life and support Chuck’s call to action.
just know that there is someone out here… someone that cares… someone that will listen… someone that will help. Our prayer is that no one ever takes their own life and that there is always someone there to help them.
The burnout pit sponsored by Thunder Creek H-D was a huge hit! Knoxville H-D pulled in the most funds raised by a H-D dealership with $3,135.00. Maybe Southern Biker Magazine should have sponsored a Hill-Climb. With hundreds of riders and smokers going wild, only one thing was left… live music and the fun did commence. Thousands of dollars were raised during this event in hopes that this plight of suicide can save a life/ lives/anyone. If you are at the point of where you feel there is no hope,
The Last Call for a Man in Blue By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
W
hile answering a domestic violence call last August, Maryville Police Department officer Kenny Moats was killed. The community, the city, the state and the country were all shocked and came to honor Officer Moats at many events and memorial gatherings. The funeral procession was attended by officers from around the state and other states as far away as New York and California. Hearing that last call for Officer Moats brought everyone to tears. It’s one of those things you just never forget. The Maryville Police Department posthumously awarded him the Medal of Valor during his funeral. Afterwards, many events were held in his honor and funds were raised for his family. KenJo Markets began a memorial fund for

the family with $10,000. Country singer Trace Atkins matched that with another $10,000; the Tennessee III Blue Knights motorcycle club donated $5,000; special t-shirts were sold that raised thousands of dollars; a memorial ride with over 300 riders began out of Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson; and the Tennessee State Legislature honored him in a special session. Other events took place and raised more funds for the family. “(All) the money raised is not going to bring Kenny back, but this is definitely something that’ll help,” said Lenoir City Police Officer Nick Halsey. Our officers are out there protecting and serving us every day. They put their lives on the line every day. Give them the respect and honor they deserve. My wife and I and our staff hope and pray that at the end of the shift, each officer arrives home safely. November 2016

New York's Hudson Valley Riding Rip Van Winkle Country By Jim Leggett Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel from coast to coast without seeing anything – CHARLES KURALT came upon Kuralt’s quote in The Little Black Book of Motorcycle Wisdom, a fascinating potpourri of rider-inspiring musings and archival motorcycle photographs, edited by Niels Aaaboe, a New York author who rides a BMW R1100R and Kawasaki KLR 650. Bob Dylan (recently Knighted Sir!), Steve McQueen (actor/biker), Marlon Brando (The Wild One), T. E Lawrence (Of Arabia) and Sony Barger (Hells Angels) speak of the joys, dangers, freedom and adventure of motorcycling. Interstate slabs do nothing for me; vandalistic cuts bulldozed through America’s landscapes, boring to ride and, they flatten tire treads designed for cornering. In contrast we’re enjoying controlled leans, skimming tight corners along Columbia County Road 13 near Chatham Center NY, speed-shifting 3rd to 4th gear at 4800 RPM, when – damn! Clutch cable breaks - exhaust snarling contemptuously, we pull to an unwelcome stop.

Author of Under The Table (http://www. simonandschuster.com/books/Under-the-Table/ Katherine-Darling/9781416565291) Darling draws heavily from her rural Southern upbringing plus ten years in NYC attending the French Culinary Institute, graduating top of her class. So you know you’re in the best place in Hudson for bikers - and sensational grub.
Antony's restored 1972 Moto Guzzi Eldorado
A 1972 Guzzi Eldorado stands proudly in resplendent glory. “I really wanted one but I didn’t want to spend $50K!” Antony explains “so I spent three years on eBay looking at Eldos until I found one I could afford. Of course it was a total wreck, had been made into a rat bike, broken bits of an oil ring in the sump. I planned on getting it running and road legal, but it kind of got away from me, so I ended up doing a full restoration. I’ve touched every nut and bolt on this bike and with the money I’ve put into it, I could have funded another Gulf War. Anyway, I rebuilt it as a 949cc with a hot cam, added almost all the police improvements so it looks, drives, and stops better than the CHP bikes it now resembles.” ON THE ROAD AGAIN Cable repaired, we ride snaking county roads heading for Harvest Spirits Distillery, Valatie, to sample John Henry Single Malt American Whiskey, named after
Back when Bowden cable and outer casings were cutto-fit from spools kept at any respectable motorcycle shop routine repairs took 15 minutes, once you knew how. Today, you can’t find raw cable nor “mechanics” that know how to make such repairs, they never heard of veteran rider’s get- you-home trick; substituting vice-grip pliers for a clutch or brake lever. Another ploy; crafty gear changes sans clutching, simple on county roads, tricky in towns to catch green traffic lights, like we did, coaxing the bike down Hudson’s picturesque 19th century Warren Street where, luckily, we discovered Moto Coffee Machine, a coffee/motorcycle shop unique and welcoming as ever encountered. Bikers, locals, families with kids and dogs too, congregate here, thirsty for Java - and food you’d never find at Starbucks. Proprietor Antony Katz, a Londoner busy replacing a cylinder head gasket, cheerily stops to examine the culprit cable. “I might have one, let’s go look” says he as we follow him past a packed lunch counter where chef (not cook) Kate Darling concentrates on culinary curiosities. Rabbit pate waffles, fennel grilled cipollini chevre greens, shaved zucchini and Halloumi salad, or egg salmon sandwich, open faced with two eggs, smoked Distiller Derek Grout's John Henry Single Malt salmon, micro greens and spicy mayo. During American revolutionary times a cider named Old Scrumpy, with ancient origins in England, was the popular bevy among Patriots and Red Coats. Small wonder folk hero Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman 1774-1845) made such an indelible name in American history; I figure it was for Scrumpy rather than apple pies!
Caught speeding - My 1954 Triumph T110, Chatham, NY
South again on Route 9, the road forks left into Valatie, then veer right over the bridge on 203 to Chatham, a country town where, long ago, I faced ten days in jail or a $10 fine caught speeding my 1954 Triumph T110 down Kinderhook Street, a cute girl snuggled tight into me on back…Sigh. Spanish style Crandell Theatre, circa 1926 and practically unchanged, still shows movies. The old tower chime clock still marks time. But my 15-centbeers, back then, sets you back Main Street, Chatham, NY, clock tower a few bucks nowadays. Route 66 south boasts a scenic ride back to Hudson, where we stayed two nights at Country Squire B&B, 251 Allen Street. PALATIAL OLANA A few miles south off 9-G we swung right, up a steep leafy road to Olana State Historic Site. One of the most important artistic and planned landscapes in the Unites States, this wondrous parkland is topped by a Persian-style mansion, home, studio and retreat for artist Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) Parking the bikes on gravel slopes from horse and carriage times, views over the winding Hudson River and brooding Catskill Mountains are worth the trip alone. An escorted tour of the mansion reveals an Aladdin’s Cave; superb paintings, fabulously rich furnishings, Arabic lances, and shields, vases and more only upstaged by captivating views of romantic scenery Church so loved. His 1857 oil on canvas Niagara (in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C) defies comparison. As for Olana’s picturesque estate, I’ve long admired its commanding perch overlooking the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, Hudson River and rolling landscape. Donning leather flying helmets and Mark V111 goggles; we climb into the open cockpit of a 1929 New Standard biplane for a flight over the Hudson River. Thumbs up, chocks away, we roar down the grass runway and lurch into the air. Suddenly we see Hudson Valley panoramas as only aviators do; lazy Hudson River, far off mountains, silvery lakes and ponds, crop-heavy fields, endless winding roads, viewed from an 86-year-old flying machine. Suddenly, three WW1 fighters form up alongside… In a scene from Baron Von Richthofen’s era a red Fokker triplane, a second black triplane and a twowinger Fokker D V11 are zooming past (I’m doing a photo shoot for a magazine, so it’s NOT your normal

Time to Appreciate Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.
F
irst a "thank you" for everyone who pressed past the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew and attended Biketoberfest. It was appreciated but attendance was definitely down. As a former dealer, my heart goes out to our local motorcycle businesses. Many of the vendors are able to move on to another event, another location to try and recoup losses. But understanding the rhythm of the business, I know that a good Biketoberfest helps those businesses in our areas because we take a hit in the summer. In other parts of the country, business flourishes in the summer months. In Daytona Beach, it's so hot with a lot of rain and it's one of our slowest seasons. So Biketoberfest is like rain after a drought. So what I propose is for any of you in the Southeast region who want to help, take a ride to Daytona and buy something. Order something onine from one of the shops there. And if you're looking for a good deal on a bike, I bet there's some extra inventory and you'll probably find a good deal in Daytona. And absolutely make sure you're there for Bike Week this spring. As consumers sometimes, we can take for granted the businesses and events that really make a difference in our lives and don't always realize the power we have to really make a difference. Sometimes it's just knowing someone else cares or that our customers are in our corner that makes it easier to weather a tough time. So wherever you live, ride, shop or buy, take time this month to let your dealers, service centers, apparel and parts stores know that you appreciate them. A thank you, a note on Facebook, or any sign of appreciation makes a difference and helps motivate those people who show up every day, sometimes sacrifice financially and serve you faithfully year after year.
Sound Advice from Your Attorney Order of Protection...What is That?
O
ver time and with the progression of laws, people have gained more access to the courts and protection under the law. With more laws comes more misunderstanding of the law and the protection it offers. Orders of Protection (OPs) are one of those areas that are frequently confusing and Marcos Garza misunderstood. Sometimes people believe OPs are restraining orders or that anyone can take one out against anyone. What is an Order of Protection? An order of protection is a civil, not criminal, order that prohibits the respondent (the person the order is taken out against) from either communicating with the petitioner, being around the petitioner, or both. No criminal charges have to be brought to petition for an Order of Protection. Now that being said, an Order of Protection is applicable between spouses, partners, family members, roommates, and close relations. You can't get an order of protection against your neighbor or Joe Shmoe walking down the street. Are there different types of Orders of Protection? There are two predominate types: The first is no contact, no communication and the second is social contact with numerous variations branching off from there. No contact, no communication means exactly like what it sounds, the respondent can have no contact or communication with the petitioner. Social contact means the respondent can be around and communicate with the petitioner, but is prohibited from threatening or intimidating the petitioner. A violation of either type can result in ten (10) days in jail. An Order of Protection can also temporarily establish custody, visitation, child support, and spousal support. Additionally, an Order can prohibit you from possessing firearms and even require you move out of your home. When you are initially served with an Order of Protection, the judge has only heard one side of the story. The respondent is entitled to be heard in court about why the allegations are false and why the order should not be entered. It is very important that the Respondent go to court on the court date; otherwise, the judge will enter the requested order for one year. An Order of Protection is generally enforceable for one (1) year, although after a year the petitioner for good cause can ask to have it extended. A common misconception is that an Order of Protection is a Restraining Order. Both serve very similar purposes, but are achieved through different processes and have different effects. A Restraining Order is most commonly the result of a bond condition imposed in a pending criminal case or criminal judgment. If you are served with an Order of Protection or have any questions about Orders of Protection, you should contact your local attorney immediately. Potential enforcement or a violation of an Order could have dire consequences.
