words from the publisher

Hello Folks, Thanksgiving is upon us and fall season and great riding weather. We often tend to overlook things that we take for granted, like friendships, loved ones always being there, beloved pets always being there, our health, having a roof over our head, food on the table and more. I would like to take this time to express my gratitude for the loved ones that I am grateful for being part of my life. First is my husband Randy Gracy: He is my biggest supporter and encourages me to do the best I can do. He has learned how to do farm chores, maintain and repair equipment and build barns. After he does all this, he cooks meals for me (and I like to eat!). He makes delicious Thanksgiving meals every year and I look forward to this special holiday. Next is my family: No matter what or when, I can always count on them to be there for me/us if needed. We don't see them near as much as I'd like but they are always on my mind and I pray for them often. Our family also know that Randy and I are there for them, no questions asked. Next is our amazing friends: We have the most awesome friends anyone could hope to have. Our friends have taught us how to do things on our property that would have taken years to learn on our own. We hope our friends think of us the same way. We wouldn't have made it where we are without our friends. Next is our pet family: We have a diverse pet family that includes a Yorkie that rides motorcycles, three cats that love us unconditionally, chickens that produce delicious healthy eggs and entertain us and three horses, one of which is battling for her life after becoming ill. Our ill horse is getting stronger every day and we hope she will gain weight back soon. This horse is the whole reason we bought a place in Monroe County, TN. We are very thankful she is part of our family. We almost lost her when she got too weak and had pain in her stomach. After trying different things, we finally got her feeling good and her appetite is returning. Let us know what you are thankful for on our Southern Biker Magazine Facebook.!

Restoring Old Bikes By Jim Leggett

N

othing is more exciting for veteran motorcyclists, newcomers to the sport too, than stumbling across a forgotten bike in a rural barn or town storage locker even if it is a basket case. Decades ago, I found a 1947 Harley- Davidson Knucklehead propped against the wall in a backyard garage. I paid the delighted owner $75, drained foul gas, checked oil, installed spark plugs, pumped up tires and kick started it, reluctantly, back to life and rode it home. Being a passionate Triumph Bonneville T120 aficionado, this rather clumsy, distinctly old-fashioned Harley was not my style...hurriedly I sold it for $50, just to be rid of it. Last month I saw a same year bike for sale on eBay at $18,000. Who would have guessed?

clock, I had to have it. Just as I was rolling it out of the lockup I spotted a second bike stashed behind assorted boxes. Here was a second 2007 Bullet De Luxe E (for electric starter) with a vintage single saddle, it too, covered in years of dust, a few minor rust spots on chrome mudguards and gas tank, nothing a gentle polishing couldn’t cure – get this, this cream puff had only 35 miles on the clock! Seller agreed to a fair price for both. Titles checked to ensure smooth transfer of ownership, without haggling I wrote a check, loaded both treasures onto a pickup, raced to show a fellow Royal Enfield enthusiast my bikes. We would have both running in no time.

REBIULD:

ROYAL ENFIELD This British brand dates to mid Victorian times when the fledgling company made needles and sewing machinery near Reditch England. New rave bicycles soon followed, and by 1901 the Enfield Manufacturing Company Limited were turning out well behaved motorcycles.

Upon hearing of a 2007 Royal Enfield Bullet - the longest-lived motorcycle design in history-up for grabs, I wasted no time following the owner to his nearby storage lock up. Behind a mazea of boxes sat the bike, a Deluxe model, its 500cc engine dismantled due to a main bearing issue. Otherwise it looked to be in very good condition and with only 6,000 miles on the

motorbikes.” Also “The Highest Pass” a 2011 adventure film, featuring a modern guru leading a group of Royal Enfield mounted motorcyclists though northern India’s Himalayas, and Ladakh, also known as the Little Tibet.

When, in the 1970’s, most British bike factory packed it in Royal Enfield had already licensed a factory in Madras, India to manufacture bikes. “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” was the factory motto. Hence Enfield India machines on the market today are pretty much look identical to 1955 350 cc and 500 cc Bullets – apart from upgraded electrics, turn signals and electric starters. Reliability and workhorse stamina? See YouTube Red “Worlds’ Highest passes road trip in Himalayas on Royal Enfield

Parts for Royal Enfield are readily available. A call to Nfieldgear (www.nfieldgear. com) secured a full rebuild gasket set. The bikes came with a factory Bullet workshop manual, essential for engine re-builds. New batteries were in stock at a local Auto Zone. Tires, ten years old and dry as a desert, as I say to my bartender, were replaced with Dunlop K-70’s. While those Enfield tires looked like new, lying so long in storage they had become brittle. Even cornering the handsome 35-mile unit, I felt the rear tire slip, as if on a bald tire. Miller’s Classic Motorcycles Yearbook and Price Guide proclaims while “Demand still points to rare machines and those with provenance and, in some cases, an exceptional restoration (even on a fairly everyday classic) will see an above average price. This may not always reflect the cost of the restoration.” I much prefer un-restored motorcycles, except for routine maintenance, tires, control cables, brake pads so I’m not planning any restoration on a just discovered 1959 Ariel Square Four Mark 11 – IF my bid snares this classic British beauty. Indian of Chattanooga Turns 2 By Galgo, Joe McNabb

rockett Powersport’s Indian of Chattanooga in Tennessee put on a huge gathering for their 2nd anniversary. Indian motorcycles from all over the area came in for the event and so did a whole lot of other makes and models. Riders got treated to demo rides on the new 2018 Indian and some 2017 remaining and even some quality used motorcycles.

C

They provided a food cater that provided lots delicious food for everyone including some of the best barbeque on the planet. Classic Country Q99.3 did live remotes and provided great tunes for the 200+ crowd that came to help celebrate this special day. Southern Biker Magazine had their corn-hole boards getting a lot of use by young and old alike. Several riders decided they needed an upgrade and purchased new motorcycles right on the spot. I can’t wait to get my motorcycle endorsement, these Indian motorcycles look like the one for me. The giveaways that went on all day were great prizes and lots of folks went away with their bellies full and very happy with their prizes. The big giveaways happened at the end of the day with two $250 gift cards and the top giveaway of a $1,000 gift card. All three of those riders were extremely happy to say the least. I want to thank John Crockett, Cayce Crockett and GM Mike Steranko for inviting Southern Biker Magazine and myself to be a part of this event. We can’t wait until the next one.

2nd Annual Smoky Mountain Cannonball Run By Smokin' Joe Ball

pen to all riders, the 2nd Annual Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson Cannonball Run was a huge success again. Regardless of your skill level and machine, this ride was a one-day challenge testing your navigation and planning skills. Each team was comprised of two or more riders that had six hours to complete their run. There are 80 locations with points ranging from 10 to 100 that encompass a 100-mile radius with the Smoky Mountain HarleyDavidson location as the center.

O

Registration opened at 8AM, so after a hearty breakfast, I met up with my teammate David McKale. The teams of riders rolled in and after getting registered, everyone was busy planning stops and calculating possible points. As for our team it took several iterations before we finalized our plan. The plan was to try and achieve 340 points with a few 10 pointers if we had extra time on the way back. We had stops at the Parkway Drive-In and Bush Beans. We then proceeded to our furthest stop at Looking Glass Falls (100-point stop) in North Carolina. Just before we reached the falls, we were held up by an accident that had the road blocked. From here we continued to the highest elevation on the Blue Ridge Parkway (another 100-point stop). The Blue Ridge Parkway sign near Cherokee, NC was next and then we rushed to make our other stop at Newfound Gap. We had planned to stop at the Foothills Parkway sign and the US 129 Dragon Outpost, but because of the extra time to go over the mountain in heavy traffic we opted to just head back with the 300 points we had.

disqualified. Even though the 2nd Annual Cannonball Run was shortened by an hour it did not deter the winning teams from achieving more points. The top 5 teams, #42: 390, #9: 380, #7: 360, #8: 350 and #19: 320. In total 33 teams with 99 registered participants raised over $5,000 dollars which benefits the Sean Summerfield Memorial Scholarship. Bill Davidson, the Vice President of the Harley-Davidson Museum wrote Scott Maddux a personal letter on Sean Summerfield and it was on display at the ride. Sean’s life still today is affecting folks he never knew. What a perfect way to celebrate the memory of such a fine young man. I will always remember his infectious smile, attitude, love of motorcycles and riding.

We gave it our best shot but we ended up being 9 minutes late so we were

Tennessee Motorcycles & Music Revival By Carrie Rapp & Sara Liberte he Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival throttled into Hurricane Mills, TN from September 28 to October 1 for its inaugural year and delivered an event of top quality production, with a grass roots southern hospitality feel. Guests are saying this was a “class act event” revolving around all things motorcycle, music and camping.

T

The event hosted motorcycle riders of all makes and models at one of the most storied and beautiful ranches in the great state of Tennessee, Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. Attendees enjoyed live music at multiple locations within the ranch including top acts such as: Ben Haggard, the youngest son of late country music legend, Merle Haggard; legendary John Anderson, who kicked off the first night by performing some of his top hits from the more than 40 singles he’s charted over his 30year career. Also performing was Tim Montana, who spent the past year touring with ZZ Top and Kid Rock. Taking the stage on Saturday night was Jared Blake, a motorcyclist himself, who performs at rallies across the country. Guests also enjoyed The Steel Woods, Bishop Gunn, Keith Anderson, Stone Senate, and Mountain Sprout, who played some of the best blue grass music late night down at the waterin’ hole by the creek. The highlight of the event of course, was Miss Loretta Lynn herself taking to the stage; this was her first appearance since her stroke back in May of this year. This was an extraordinarily intimate afternoon with Loretta and her family, along with singing some of her top hits, Loretta shared stories as she embraced the crowd to let them all know just how happy she was to welcome them all to her ranch. For those in attendance, it was a oncein-a lifetime experience to be so close and intimate with the legendary Queen of Country. The entertainment didn’t stop with the music; Rhett Rotten’s Wall of Death

provided shows all weekend along with the “Hillbilly Flat Track” mini bike racing hosted by Bean’re. The Hogway Speedway had their version of “fast hogs” for guests to enjoy and some of the very best Nashville food trucks were on hand serving up some delicious eats. Bill Dodge of Bling’s Cycle hosted the “BC Moto-Invitational” a custom motorcycle show featuring hand-selected craftsmen and women displaying some extraordinary hand-crafted custom motorcycles. Bill himself has chosen what he calls a “top section” of some of the most talented custom motorcycle builders such as Pat Patterson of Led Sled Customs and Paul Wideman of Bare Knuckle Choppers. Some of the other builders were Jeff Cochran, Former owner of Sucker Punch Sally’s Motorcycles and Zach Johnson, son of the horsepower king, Kendall Johnson. “We created this event with a goal of providing motorcycle and music lovers something different than what is currently out there; all the entertainment was from the region and Nashville, the country’s hottest and most popular music city,” stated Co-Promoter Buck Shaw. “We wanted to feature music representative of the incredible musicians, song-writers and performers of the area and to fulfill what many motorcycle enthusiasts have been asking for - a destination event in a unique location that celebrates the rhythm of a great road trip. I am confident we delivered that and if you read all the comments on our Facebook page, you will see our guests also feel the same way”. Says Carrie Repp, CoPromoter Of Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival. (continued on page 13)

(continued from page 12)

Ride-in campers (and RVs) enjoyed a stunning location along Hurricane Creek with easy access to the event hub, concert stage, vendors, entertainment, food court and bars and the ultimate experience was camping at Loretta’s. “While motorcyclists know what it takes to have a good ride, adding a great destination can make for the perfect trip. Ride the rolling hills of Tennessee, visit the area’s unique attractions, and come back to Loretta’s Ranch for fun and great music with fellow riders.” Says Tayla Lynn, granddaughter of Loretta Lynn and Lynn family spokesperson. “Memaw and my family have hosted the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship for nearly 40 years. We absolutely enjoy having moto-enthusiasts here at the Ranch, it’s what we do!” –Tayla Lynn Wrapping up the 4-day festivities was Loretta’s Ride for Mission 22, a multispoked charity ride benefiting Mission 22, a nonprofit organization that provides

treatment programs for veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI, while raising awareness on the tragic issue of veteran suicide. 22 separate motorcycle rides rolled in from six states, all culminating at Loretta’s Ranch for an all-star performance to celebrate our Veterans. Loretta Lynn was determined to greet the riders and support our veterans, as she has always done throughout her career. Loretta’s Ride for Mission 22 was able to raise $20,000. Honda Debuts Electric Motorcycle Concept with Riding Assist-e By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy t the 45th Annual Tokyo Motor Show on October 27th (after our publishing date), Honda will unveil their new Electric Motorcycle with Honda Riding Assist-e that keeps the motorcycle upright. The Honda Riding Assist-e is a self-balancing motorcycle powered by electricity from a lithium battery. Honda wanted to enter the electric motorcycle market with a big splash. With this new model, they’ve archived their goal…and then some.

A

The motorcycle chassis is not without notice and takes its cues from the Honda Rebel and Rukus it seems. It features a single-sided swing-arm, Bridgestone Battlax sport-touring tires, Nissan brakes and linkage-assisted shocks with a traditional fork set up. The dash is futuristic and the throttle is labeled Throttle-By-Wire, while the headlights are in-row LEDs.

After the Tokyo Show, Honda will put out more information and possible release dates for the retail sector of the motorcycle. We’ll be letting you know more in the next issue. Stay tuned.

The Ride Assist-e concept motorcycle accomplishes the two goals Honda wanted to meet or exceed: make motorcycles accessible to more people and eliminate emissions allowing a more “Green” atmosphere at Honda. Honda calls the ideas “enjoying the freedom of mobility” and “a carbonfree society”. According to Honda, the technology that keeps the Riding Assist-e upright at low speeds was developed using its humanoid robot research. Airborne Justice...Dubai Introduces the Scorpion 3 Police Drone by Hoversurf By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he police force in Dubai recently introduced their new police flying motorcycle. Straight out of “Back to the Future”, this new hover-bike was built by the Russian firm Hoversurf. The oversized looking drone can be piloted by a human rider or be remotely controlled by an individual on the ground. It can handle payloads up to 660 pounds and travel at speeds up to 40 mph for about 25 minutes. The police in Dubai state this hover-bike could get to emergencies quicker than ground cars or motorcycles depending on the traffic situation at the time. It could also be sent to places where cars or motorcycles can’t easily access. It also has the possibility of airlifting injured people in certain situations or rescuing stranded people in rough terrain where a helicopter might not be able to fly.

Air-Uber anyone? Driverless cars are an idea to beat traffic; the drone taxi will make its debut later this year in Dubai, however, this company is not alone on the flying drone taxi. Both Uber and Airbus are working to develop their own prototypes of taxi/drone transportation. Other companies such as Malloy, Aoefex, E-volo and Ehang are in the mix to develop one as well. The “Jetsons” transportation world is beginning to take shape and I hope I’m still alive to be able to enjoy some of the new creations coming.

The technology behind this current hover-bike is amazing. The flight controllers and software aimed at flying and safety are state-of-the-art. The machine is designed to focus on speed, altitude and safety. Only time will tell if this design takes off in the retail sector or stays in the business sector of our world. The hover-bike can reach a height of 33 feet and weighs in at a whopping 265 pounds. The real ingenuity is the first version can also be purchased for a mere $150,000. Seeing that the bike is stable in flight on their newly released video, it’s a wonder Harley-Davidson, Honda or another manufacturer isn’t jumping in on this. Regardless of how this is going to be used, the ramifications of the first one on the market is evident and now the technology will absolutely begin to blow this first creation out of the water. Another concept from this company with a familiar theme is the drone taxi…

Areas where there used to be a ton of bikes and vendors is a distant memory now and other areas like Ormond Beach have grown and expanded in bike traffic and vendors. I had a chance to talk to a number of friends in the industry. Just like everything else the motorcycle industry is undergoing change. I don’t know if any one fully knows the direction. I have a good friend in the trike manufacturing business who told me the market for new trikes has dropped drastically because now a bunch of the early trike riders can no longer ride or are riding in heaven. Now there are more used trikes than ever before on the market. It’s good news if you’re looking for one but not so good news if you’re a manufacturer. My husband and I have done a lot of business consulting over the years and know one thing, “If you’re on the tip of the wave of change, you make the most money. If you’re in the middle of the wave, you make money and if you’re on the end of the wave, you’re struggling and if you’re not careful, you’ll drown. I usually write for the rider, but today I’m writing for the dealer, the manufacturer, the distributor, and challenge you to look for the new wave in product, marketing, social media and your millennial customers. Have you studied millennials? Do you know what they want and how they shop? Are you still accommodating baby boomers? Cause if you are, you will not catch this next wave. It doesn’t mean that you have to totally stop one for another. Even on your team, you need some millennials. I have an assistant who is a true blue millennial. They work different, think different and are motivated differently. But they are amazing and can multiply your impact exponentially; they think out of the box, they are tech and social media savvy.

Everyone over fifty needs one in their life. This industry is too important to not help mentor and impart to the next generation but also to be open to receiving their impact. Industries die when they are not open to innovation, transformation and CHANGE. The dinosaurs died but plenty of animals continued to evolve. Take a look at your business model – has it changed? Are you scared of technology – it’s time to change! Are you able to accept the brilliance of this younger generation and incorporate it? Do you have any idea on how to attract millennials to your business? Years ago there was a business called Blockbusters and it was going blockbuster but guess what? They didn’t change and they could have been the Netflix of that generation. So now all of their glass stores full of shelves have gone by the wayside and their edge on the market was lost. It’s what happens when we don’t change when the times, technology and demographics has – so I challenge you to think about what kind of change you need to make.
