words from the publisher

Hello Folks,

There is definitely a cool chill in the air here in Knoxville, TN. We rode to a bike night this week and it was a bit nippy! Time to get out the chaps and leather coats. We have heated gear so if the urge hits us to go ride in the winter time, we can. Winter is usually when we have some time to get out and enjoy some riding, assuming no snow. I had an opportunity to ride down to Daytona for a Ladies Bike Weekend. See my article in this issue. What I want to talk about is the importance of having your bike fit you well. My husband, thankfully has made sure my bike has most every accessory I can imagine, but there are still some things to work on in the fit department. Riding down to Daytona in one day is an all day adventure. Bonnie Pitchford and Michelle Lingerfelt rode down with me for the ladies weekend on their trikes. We had loads of fun! On the ride down, my lower back started hurting. My handle bars are not quite the right height and distance to my body. I have to lean forward and down a little too much putting a strain on my lower back and arms. My husband was nice enough to get some mini ape handle bars and braided cables to put on my bike. I tried on a Heritage with mini apes and they fit perfect, so I can't wait to get them installed on my bike and try it out! I'll post pics on Southern Biker Magazine Facebook page after they are installed. I'm also thinking of having lower fairings (not sure if that's what they are called) like on an Ultra Classic put on my Softail Deluxe. Never have seen one before so I may have a new concept. Stay tuned!

9th Annual Barber Vintage Festival

By Greg Johnson

ew things at this stage in my life astonish or amaze me. The Barber Vintage Festival sponsored by the Triumph Dealers of North America I attended a few weekends ago with my family at the breathtaking Barber Motor Sports Park in Birmingham Alabama did JUST that! If you are a motorcycle rider or enthusiast you do NOT need to miss this annual event. EVERY make and year of motorcycle imaginable was represented there. I am not talking about the museum which should be part of the Smithsonian it is so amazing. No I am talking about the bikes parked on the grass all over the park. Motorcycles that were RIDDEN there and kept in perfect condition by their loving owners. I got to witness the sensory overload not only through MY eyes but through the eyes of my 14 year old son and my beautiful wife who had never been to a motorcycle race in their lives. There before us were priceless motorcycles not sitting in some museum or gently ridden on the weekend but being raced at top speeds around the 2.38 mile course. We strolled through the endless sea of vintage motorcycles, our jaws dragging the ground at every step. My son who loves military motorcycles was in heaven. There were Harley Davidson’s, BMW and other brands I had never seen, dressed in full military armament.

Vendor Area

Vintage Motocross Racing

There were 3 land speed record motorcycles displayed in a huge area by the main sponsor Triumph. One of them was 1000hp and had a top speed over 400 mph. The museum is something that has to be seen to be understood. I do not have the words in my limited vocabulary to describe how awe struck we were upon entering the museum and seeing 4 floors of motorcycles displayed before us. I found out later that there were in fact over 1350 in the collection and 85 cars. Fifty of these were Lotus road racers! For THIS event Mr. Barber opened up the restoration level of the facility so everyone could see how they restore these pieces to pristine condition. There were seminars, auctions, swap meets, classes, road racing, off road racing, fan zones, displays, food, stunt riding and vendors of every motorcycle product imaginable. This year was a record setting attendance of over 61,000 paid attendees. The motor sports park reminds you of a beautiful golf course. The flowers, landscaping and design were all intended to make this the MASTERS of road racing facilities. Mission accomplished Mr. Barber. The dates for next years event are October 10th, 11th and 12th of 2014. Visit the website www.barbervintagefestival. org for all the information. This event is a MUST for any enthusiast. See YOU there!

14th Annual MidSouth Motorcycle Festival

By Richard Hollin

B

oss Hoss riders from all over the country converged on the beautiful Paris Landing State Park outside Paris, TN for their 14th Annual Midsouth Motorcycle Festival. Tennesse’s own Boss Hoss Motorcycle Company, located in Dyersburg, TN, sponsored a huge homecoming for their faithful. Guests who attend this annual event have attended from more than 9 foreign countries and 33 different States across the U.S., truly making this an international affair. This year's rally had something of interest to everyone. There was a BBQ cookoff, live entertainment, a vendor’s area with plenty of food and gear, and poker and dice runs with daily motorcycle events, lots of vendors, parades, musical entertainment and nightly social functions. Full Throttle Saloon brought out their merchandise with Fajita Mike selling shirts instead of fajitas. Also new this year, Chewy’s Choppers sponsored a bike show featuring the area’s best bike builders. Of course Boss Hoss had demo rides to showcase their latest machines and prospective riders were lined up all afternoon. It was three action packed days of entertainment for everyone. A big congratulations goes out to Mike Wallace from Minnesota who won the 2013 Boss Hoss Gangsta Trike in the raffle supporting the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Next year will be their 15th

annual event and it promises to be their largest yet. All motorcycle makes are welcome to this event, just sign up and come and enjoy a great time with other motorcycle enthusiasts.

Ladies Begin a Tradition for Themselves S

By Ms Mag Man, Kristin Gracy

outhern Biker Magazine Road Crew members Bonnie Pitchford, Michelle Lingerfelt and I left Knoxville on our bikes/ trikes heading toward Daytona Beach, FL for the First Annual Ladies Bike Weekend to honor women riders, presented by Iron Horse Saloon in Ormond Beach, FL. It was quite an adventure and one of the best times I’ve ever had with an awesome group of ladies. There were women from every walk of life attending; no one had the same story except that they love riding motorcycles and want to socialize with others who share their passion. Kathy Tolleson, the CEO/President of Roar Motorcycles for Women out of Daytona Beach was a huge supporter and sponsor of the event and was also the coGrand Marshall of the ladies motorcycle ride along with Jody Perewitz, the land speed record holder on an American Vtwin. Jody now has 10 records under her belt! A meet and greet at Iron Horse Saloon began the weekend as we were treated to a wide array of vendors who offered beautiful items such as horse hair jewelry, leather goods and much more. It was a really hot day, so after the meet and greet, we went to get a bite to eat and head back to the host hotel, The Lotus Inn & Suites. The hotel was absolutely beautiful inside and out. It has a modern theme with

beautiful lines and crisp white accents. Our room overlooked the pool and just a little further was the beach. It was so relaxing and peaceful to sit out on the pool side and chat with the ladies. The next day began with a pool party at Lotus Inn with delicious food from Sweet Marley’s Café, music by Blue Diamond (a father/daughter team) and chair massages with Terra. Terra always works on me when I go to Daytona as my back gets a little out of whack from riding long distances. Then it was off to J&P Cycles for an autograph book and poster signing session with Jody and Kathy, a light snack and then a beautiful ride on the Daytona Loop. It is one of the most scenic and beautiful rides I’ve been on. It takes you through a shaded canopy of trees arching from one side of the street to the other and through a natural water way with marsh grass and all kinds of wild life. The ride ended at Roar Motorcycles with more snacks, airbrush demonstration, basic bike maintenance and Q&A session. That evening at the Iron Horse Saloon we gathered for the Ladies Bike Show and Fashion Show. Kathy asked if I would participate in the fashion show (I laughed as I don’t think I’m model caliber). She said they wanted real women to show the apparel, so I reluctantly agreed. The bike show entries were building up so I entered my bike for fun. Much to my surprise, it won Best Stock Harley! What an honor! Those were two firsts that night and an event that will have long lasting great memories. A great tradition has begun with the Annual Ladies Event. Next year, Sherry Fletcher, the event organizer will be doing this event even bigger and better so keep a look out for it in Southern Biker Magazine; you don’t want to miss it. Photos from the event will be posted on Southern Biker Magazine’s Facebook page on November 1st.

Prostate Cancer Ride with Phil Fulmer

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he 4th Annual Man Ride commenced at The Shed in Maryville with Former Vols Coach Phillip Fulmer and a host, of volunteer riders. Everyone rode for someone they knew or a family member who is affected by prostate cancer. An auction after the ride raised even more money for the cause. Coach Fulmer was available for photos and an autograph session especially for Tennessee Volunteer items won during the auction. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men besides skin cancer. It is found most often in men older than 50 years of age. In fact, more than 8 out of 10 men who have prostate cancer are older than 65 years of age. It is becoming more common than breast cancer in those age ranges of men. All the proceeds will go toward free prostate screenings in the community. Southern Biker Magazine is a proud sponsor of this event and greatly appreciated the organizers and riders for particpation in the event.

20th Annual Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride

By Ms Mag Man, Kristin Gracy

R

emoved by force from their land, the Indians of several nations were sent on a long journey to Oklahoma where a government reservation was waiting for them. Many died along the way. Today, many of those Indian nation descendants along with thousands of bikers come to help remember a time in our nation’s history that left more than a cloud hanging over its borders. Smokin’ Joe Ball, Frankie Ballew and I along with thousands of riders ponied up in Chattanooga for the journey to Oklahoma by way of Florence, AL for the 20th annual Trail of Tears Remembrance Ride. Many riders started at different locations in Kentucky, North Carolina and Georgia to meet up in Chattanooga the day before. Ride Leader and Originator, Bill Cason was making what some had said might be his last ride on the motorcycle, but we’ll just have to see. We hope he continues to ride. Headlining the kick-off party Friday night at Thunder Creek Harley-Davidson was my good friend Jasmine Cain. She just plain rocks! There were lots of vendors and we met up with several of our friends

Jasmine Caine and me

and Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew members. After a light dinner, we headed to the hotel to prepare for the next day’s ride. With VIP parking up front, the next morning brought, you guessed it, rain, again! We suited up for the rain, climbed aboard our ponies and rode off. Our midway lunch/gas stop brought a break in the rain and talks about the ride. Many of the scholarship recipients help out during the event and I was fortunate enough to meet one of the young recipients at the lunch stop. Many folks I talked to had this ride on their bucket list. One couple from Panama City Beach said they saw the ad in Southern Biker Magazine in Florida and decided this was their year to ride in it. As we approached Florence, the crowds lined the streets as the sun shined down upon us. Riding in and witnessing all the waving throngs of people, I got choked up with pride as so many people held American flags and waved feverishly to us. One person that stands out in particular was mowing grass in the median and in his right hand he held up a hand full of little American flags to us as we

drove by. It was a welcomed site to see this enthusiasm and it touched my heart. Frankie and I talked after the ride and her thoughts mirrored mine about this feeling. As I rode that day, I reflected about the unimaginably

severe hardships the original Trail of Tears participants experienced after the cold/wet beginning we had that day with the “uncomfortable” conditions. We were welcomed by lots of people at McFarland Park that hosted the Trail of Tears Native American Festival. The Native American dance, music, dress, pow wow and vendors of all kinds were there to entertain the riders and offer everything from food, Native American made products, animal hides to commemorative headdresses. That night, Jasmine Cain rocked the crowd again at Natchez Trace Harley-Davidson. The next morning, I wasn’t feeling up to the total Oklahoma ride, but our resident Southern Biker Mag road crew photographer, Frank Pate, continued on all the way to Oklahoma! I stopped to visit my father in Blanche, TN on the way back home. It marked the one year anniversary of him and I reconciling our relationship; a great way to finish out a great ride! There are no fees for this ride but every year through sponsors, donations, vendor fees and promotional sales, money is raised to help fund a Native American Scholarship Fund. Southern Biker Magazine is proud to be a sponsor of such a worthy event. For a more information, read about the scholarship recipients and the history behind the ride, visit www. trailoftears-remembrance.org.

Tellico Fall Biker Rally, Good Times, Good Times

he Fall Tellico Biker Rally was another hit as it continues to grow. Attendance was outstanding even with a little Mother Nature rain mixed in. Having the indoor barn stage was a plus for Thursday and Friday. The rain left Saturday morning and it was on! TBR played host to nearly 1,000 people at their Tellico mountain rally which is located across the creek from Dickieville. Southern Biker Road Crew shirts and hats were seen everywhere. Several events had to be postponed due to the rain and wet grounds, but the creek was loaded with waders and swimmers. Great musical guests included Exit 60, CAB, Bad Tattoo, John Gilmore and the Jason Stinett Band. The new Wobble Wagon transported everyone across the creek and back 24/7 until unless it was a complete downpour, but even then, several got on the wagon and had their own rain dance party. The highlight of the event was the CCRF bike giveaway which is presented in another article in this issue.

The Boogie Too

Keeping the Tradition Going

I

n the Land of the Boogie Too there are two types of people.....those that are there....and those that ain’t! Those that were there were treated to a 4-5 day (depending on when you arrived) party from the git-go. Herbert & Amber Clark are always improving and continually changing something, making the rally never the same. They bring in top live music acts, tremendous food vendors, put on tons of bike games with trophies and they don’t stop there. The SBM Road Crew had to fill in till I could get there (imagine having to work for the beginning of the rally). But when I arrived, it was time to join in with everyone, kick back and enjoy the party. From Scooter’s Biker Bar to the main stage, from vendor row to the top of the hill, everyone was having one heck of time! Live music was tremendous with Monkey Wrench, Skipper Grace, Sixx Killer, the Audio Outlaws and others. Crystal & Harley put on a great ventriloquist act and of course the biker games were a huge hit.

By Geno DeVito Powers

Herbert and Amber have gone that extra notch for all the party goers for next year. They have gone out and purchased the rights to a West Tennessee Rally site and thus..... The Boogie Hollar is born. It’s located at 164 Clay Farm Lane in Atwood, TN. The inaugural date is May 1st - 4th, 2014. Get ready West Tennessee, the Boogie Man and his hot leash holder Amber are coming! And for their first rally there, they are giving away a custom painted Harley-Davidson!!! Only way to enter and WIN is to be there!!!

Braswell Records First Ever Flat Track Racing Music Video

C

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

ountry singer Beau Braswell is not just another voice in the talent pool of country singers. He’s a six-time AMA National Champion and two-time AMRA World Motorcycle Champion racer. AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship racing series and the promoters for the Flat Track Finals latched onto Beau Braswell and recorded their first ever video with Braswell’s song “Sideways” for AMA Flat Track Racing at the LA Fairplex in Pomona, CA. Awardwinning film maker Chris McDaniel was tapped as director to capture all of the singing and racing action. “I just want to help these guys get some

attention, they are awesome talents and I think when everyone sees exactly what they do on the track it will be a good thing; so if I can write a song that does that then cool”, said Braswell. Braswell has since gotten the itch to go back racing so he has scheduled to run a limited race schedule of the 2014 AMA Flat Track Championship. He’s currently getting his bike and pit crew together to go racing. He was quoted on a social site that he’s glad he remembers just how to flat track race, just go down the straightaway and turn left. I reminded him that on flat dirt he has to turn right, to go left........ just a little bit, sideways.

Legend of the Motorcycle Bell

By Ms Mag Man, Kristin Gracy

H

ave you noticed some riders have a small bell hanging off their motorcycle frame or handlebars? Have you wondered what the purpose is? Read on to find out. That little bell has an important mission: To ward off road gremlins or evil road spirits. As you can see, the varieties of bell types are limitless. Legend says these motorcycle gremlins love to ride, but they are also mischievous little devils and can cause all sorts of problems while you are riding. Some say they are responsible for that elderly gentleman driving down the road that does not see you and cut you off in traffic. Or, you may be having trouble shifting smoothly, your battery goes dead, your turn signal quits working, an oil spill or pot holes appear out of nowhere, you hit a patch of black ice, etc. Those little gremlins look for trouble and try to steer your bike towards it and watch you crash for their enjoyment. Once you put a bell near the front of your bike, it is supposed to ward off attacks from the little gremlins, not allowing any more to get onto your bike. If you already have some gremlins riding with you, they will get trapped in the hollow of the bell and the constant ringing will drive them insane, causing them to lose their grip and fall to the ground. The key to warding off the gremlins is that someone has to give you a bell for your bike. If you have a friend who does not have a gremlin bell, make sure to get them one. You can buy one and put it on your bike but the power is increased if it is given as a gift. Safe riding skills, the bell and a good preventive maintenance program by the bike’s owner will help eliminate the road gremlins. Some bells are made of brass and attached to the left swing arm to remember brothers and sisters who have gone down riding. The reason a brass bell is chosen is that, as we ride, it gets dirty and tarnished. Every time we wash and polish the brass bell, we are reminded of friends lost and our thoughts turn to the meaning of being in the wind. As we ride and hear the bell ring, we imagine our brothers and sisters are riding with us and how easy it would be to join them with a single mistake. Maybe the next time a situation arises, they will be there to help us, as our Guardian Angels and keep the gremlins away from our motorcycle.

Food for Thought

by Barry Duncan

If you have ever seen the AM Pickers TV show then you’ve heard about Le Claire, IA, but it’s Big Dave & Holly’s pork tenderloins that has put the town on the map. Located at 1204 N Cody Road (Main Street) you get a great view of the Mississippi river. The pork tenderloin sandwich at $6.00 is as big as a platter and thick too. It’s topped with lettuce, pickle, onion, and tomato. Homemade cole slaw at $1.50 is a good choice. The cheese steak wrap with peppers, onions and cheese at $5 is a big favorite.
