words from the publisher

Specializing in Harley-Davidson

Hello Folks,

October is a busy month for us because we will be covering the 24th Annual Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach, FL on October 13-16 and then heading over to Panama City Beach, FL for the 16th Annual Thunder Beach Autumn Rally. Hopefully we will have some free time to enjoy the sights and sounds of each of these beautiful locations. When we go to these events, we are working hard to promote our magazine, see current and potential customers and cover happenings so we can bring images and recap to our awesome readers in next month's issue. That doesn't leave much time to relax and take in these amazing venues with leisure time, but we hope we can have some down time and enjoy the beach and the beautiful sunsets over the water, my favorite time of the day. If you are planning to attend Thunder Beach Rally, you need to make time to come down to the Best of the Beach Bike Show at Pier Park. We are happy to be hosting this event again. Polish up your bikes and bring them down for a chance to win the coveted trophy belts for People's Choice and Editor's Choice. We will have other great prizes from our fabulous sponsors, so nearly everyone has a chance of winning a prize. Pier Park has some great restaurants and shops to check out while you are hanging out talking with others about their bike and what inspired them to customize their bike. You will hear some interesting stories, no one is alike. That's what makes the motorcycle world so unique and fascinating to me. Hope to see you there!

After 15 Years, We Remember 9/11 By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

S

eptember 11, 2001 is still in the minds of Americans today. Fifteen years later we are still fighting terrorism abroad and here at home, more than ever. Governor Cuomo’s 9/11 Memorial Ride hosted hundreds in downtown Manhattan. The final America’s 9/11 Ride was well attended with some 3,000 riders and supporters which began at Flight 93’s crash site and continued to each crash site until reaching the Pentagon. Thousands ride each year in remembrance and hundreds of police and first responders from around the country participate and escort these rides. They do not forget. Here in East Tennessee, 400 plus riders and supporters came out to the Knoxville World’s Fair Park to the 9/11 Remembrance Ride escorted by many officers including KCSO’s Tango Squad. The ceremony before the ride is always heart tugging and tear rendering as we all remembered the attacks that day and the resulting horrendous death toll. Proceeds from the event went to the Blue Knights COPSRUN, a local volunteer Fire Department and a large portion was presented to the family of fallen Maryville Police Officer Kenny Moats.

10 - Southern Biker Magazine

We remembered the Americans that died that day; we remembered the heroes who chose to stay behind, attempting to save lives and their own comrades; we remembered those soldiers who carried the fight to the enemy and lost their lives; we remembered the soldiers that still carry the Sword of Justice for us all today. We Will Never to Forget. Each rider carried a handlebar hanging card containing a photo of someone lost during the New York 9-11 tragedy. There were 75 additional names added this year as police officers and first responders have died due to the 9/11 tragedy from breathing the buildings material debris which caused disease and cancers. This date will forever be etched in history as the greatest attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor. It is important to never forget this day and what happened.

Honda Inks Deal with Ken Roczen By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy ho would have thought it, but it has happened. Highly touted Pro AMA Motocross & Supercross rider Ken Roczen has left the confines of Roger DeCoster and Team KTM and signed a three-year deal with American Honda Motor Co. The German born rider will pilot the allnew 2017 CRF450R alongside new teammate Cole Seely in the AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross series. “I’m really excited to be a part of Team Honda HRC,” Roczen said. “I’m always looking to improve myself, as well as my surroundings, team and equipment, which is why I decided to make a switch. I want to have the upper hand on every other rider out there, and I think I have that with Honda.

W

Roczen’s accomplishments are numerous; in the 450 class, 2014 and 2016 AMA Pro Motocross 450MX Championships, nine AMA Supercross victories. In the 250 class, 2013 250SX West title, and prior to coming to the U.S. to race full-time, he won the 2011 MX2 World Championship. Look for Roczen and Honda to be close to the front if not upfront this year in the 2017 AMA Supercross Championship.

Geico Hot Bike Tour By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

S

ome of the most dynamic motorcycles came through North Carolina and Tennessee on the 2016 Geico Hot Bike Tour, Biker Build-off and Bike Show. Beginning the tour in Square Park in Ashville, NC, it made stops at Wheels Through Time in Maggie Valley, NC, Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson in Maryville, TN and then a final stop in Chattanooga, TN at Coker Tire Company. Touted as 5-days + 1,000 miles = 1,000,000 stories, the Hot Bike Tour garnered some outstanding motorcycles built by 28 of the best in the industry.

on at each stop and bike build champions were crowned as well by the area folks in attendance which made for a very local feeling. At the end of the last show, a Long Riders ceremony was held at the last stop for those that road and stayed the for the whole tour with some getting some specials awards. A great ending to a 5-day motorcycle tour.

The Long Riders

Industry rigs and local vendors set up in the Manufacturer’s Midway at each stop for the crowd to buy their many items and eat and drink throughout the days’ events. Musical acts like the Dirty Soul Revival, Andalyn, Heathen Sons, Otis and Joe Lasher, Jr. followed the tour and rocked the house at each stop. Marcos Garza of the Garza Law Firm road in on his motorcycle to take in some the outstanding builds. Different stops had several different events like the 100 yard drag contest at Smoky Mountain H-D, the GRIM Co. stunt bike show, Pros & Joes rides and much more. Free bike shows for local riders were put

Sturgis Turns 76 By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy ttendance is always something to behold, especially at Sturgis. Last year was one of the best attended rallies in quite some time due to it being the 75th anniversary. Expectations were being set a lot lower for this year, but the crowd returned and projections indicate somewhere around the 450,000 mark.

A

Rain hit the event but that did not deter nearly a half million riders in having a great time and doing some awesome riding. There were plenty of things to do especially at the Legendary Buffalo Chip where top acts like Kid Rock, Willie Nelson, Lita Ford, Cheap Trick, Ratt, Miranda Lambert and lots more like these performed. The Chip was hoppin’! Other venues had large acts too, but there was so much more to do this year. The Legends Ride, Michael Lichter’s Skin & Bones Bike Show, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse photo-op, bike builders galore and let’s not forget the fabulous bikes!

back to all its glory after it burned down this year. Michael Ballard is currently removing some of the great works of art from the old place and setting it up at the new one. Our Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew members were there taking in all that Sturgis had to offer. The 76th was larger than expected and a good time was had by all. If this isn’t on your bucket list, then you must be a passenger in a car.

North Carolina Bend–Swinging Bonanza By Jim Leggett

arley-Davidson of Charlotte doesn’t usually work on Honda machines. Knowing I needed help changing out my 1982 Honda G1100 rear tire (I’d pulled the wheel off already) helpful guys in their top notch service department had the new Shinko 230 Tour Master 140/90-16 installed, inflated, balanced and ready to go within thirty minutes. Nor do they carry Shinko brand tires, reportedly superior for long wear at healthy speeds versus more expensive brands, so I found one online at Rocky Mountain and delivered in only three days. Did you know Shinko also offer Be Seen, The 777 Reflector Tire, a narrow white wall light-reflecting strip? Great idea, but I didn’t fancy those on a vintage oldie. Rear brake assembly off, I noted the brake pads worn nearly down to metal. A quick stop at Cycle Gear in Matthews and a set of EBC High Performance Organic Brake Pads complete my trusty Gold Wing Standard’s rear end tune up.

SAFETY - FIRST AND ALWAYS! As essential to safety a pre-flight inspection before flying private airplanes, so too a pre-ride check of your bike is equally important. Oil levels, fuel tank, tire pressures, drive chain lubricant, battery condition, lights and turn signals all need inspection before you head out for a day’s ride. Should you be meeting up with friends, don’t be the pain in the behind holding everyone else up while selfish you needs to fill the tank, inflate a tire or grab a coffee and egg sandwich. SAFE RIDING calls for proper eye-protection, a DOT approved crash helmet, not flimsy brainbuckets which are absolutely useless. An early idiocy on my part, aged 17, saw me skidding my 1954 BSA Bantam sideways under an oncoming truck, crash helmet

taking a killer-ricochet off the front axle! I’ll never forget yon stiff neck or hellish headache – or a lesson for life; always wear a good quality crash helmet! Human skulls are not idiot proof. Add over-ankle boots, decent gloves and a sturdy motorcycle jacket, leaving shreds of those on metal -shredding road surfaces beats lumps of human flesh any day. READY TO RIDE! Eager to break in my new Shinko, I meet up with regular motorcycle side-kick George Smith – who’s been riding since 1965, currently on a 1950’s-style ’95 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 with British plates or sleek ’04 Moto Guzzi Breva 750. George knows North Carolina’s back roads that thread areas so remote, if ever I lost George, I’d need a Cherokee Indian guide to get me back home. We’re talking traffic-free delights where mid 70’s speeds are the norm. Safe too, except swerving through challenging Z-curves bordering cliff-side drop offs I prefer not to contemplate. Anyway, I always ride at my own comfortably brisk pace to the amazement of sports bike riders who never realized a veteran cruiser handles challenging cornering quite so. After one 200mile ride with a bevy of crotchAuthor’s 1982 Hoda Gold Wing G 1100 rocket with riding pals power plants pals, George texts me; “At lunch yesterday, while you were outside, one of the guys looked out at your bike and asked me, ‘How does he DO that?’ I told him you

were just really experienced.” True, I did race 650cc Triumph motorcycles, back in those halcyon days when sex was safe and motorcycles dangerous. We count seven riders by the time George and I hit the starter buttons; easing single file out of the Stallings Super Q on Highway 74, powerful bikes including Triumph, Aprilia, Ducati, BMW R1200 RT where my former Yamaha FZ 1000 would have been a better match in such fast company. I noticed some wondering what a 34-yearold cruiser could hope to do amongst such august machinery. However I know my bike, I know my skills – most important our joint limitations! Despite a paltry 85 MPH speedo pin, this foxy imposter hits 125 MPH - if and when needed. Visor down, I nail 2nd riding position behind George as we veer off past Wingate University heading for Stanly County, then northeast for Troy and Baden Lake. The countryside hereabouts rolls and dips gently past vistas of cotton fields, chicken factories, dairy cattle spreads, the odd 35 MPH hamlet here and there calling for diligent observation of speedometers. Down one fast paced straightaway, a herd of deer spook, streaking single file down a stubbly cornfield parallel to our line of progress. What a sight alongside fifty yards off, as if anxious to join the morning fun. Leaping and swerving, they sped closer and closer. We drop speed anticipating a mad dash in front of us, then, just as collision looked imminent, the lead buck veers left, vanishing into a thick stand of spindly pines followed by a parting glimpse of white tails.

Author’s 1982 Gold Wing G1100 below Chimney Rock, NC

Later we find ourselves near Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, stopping for a leg-stretch while eying splendid granite overlooks and Hickorynut Falls so memorably filmed in Last of the Mohicans. Dirty Dancing, too, was filmed nearby, a remake of which is in production in the North Carolina high country at

press time. Finding an old biker bar I knew closed, we rode on to aptly named Bayfront Bar and Grill, situated right on the lake’s southern tip. Beer makes me tired; I opt for a refreshing Tanqueray Gin and tonic, half dozen double fried wings with Bikers at scenic Lake Lure's Bayfront celery and onion cheese dip. Bar and Grill It’s never a good idea to dine or drink too heavily while riding – as for bevy, one’ll do ya! An enjoyable hour or so swapping bike notes, hope-to-do future rides and unwinding in a truly relaxing atmosphere and enjoying friendly banter with fellow visitors and envious husbands of a certain age, who apparently DO wish they’d kept their Harleys… We still had a 150-mile-ride home east of Charlotte, again over roads less travelled, thanks to George’s encyclopedic ken of North Carolina’s best motorcycling roads. With George in the lead, we’re talking day-long adventures geared for experienced riders. A 12-hour long nine-rider mid September odyssey, including four Italian, three Japanese and two British bikes, chalked up 350 miles, taking in the annual Grit Bike Breakfast at Shatley Springs in Ashe County. “Plates piled high with eggs, sausage, bacon, ham and pancakes” George recalls. “Bowls of gravy, grits, hash browns and baked apples, I could have used an extra arm just to pass the plates along. Best of all, we rode bucolic little roads, sharing some with folks on horseback, catching glimpses of North Carolina as it was before Interstate slabs bulldozed their way across the landscapes.” I suggest George really should host private tours, so other riders get to experience such backroads delights. He nods noncomplacently, swings a leg over his Moto Guzzi and roars off for home, arriving with time to walk his dogs.

Apocalyptic Bike Works Has a New Home By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy oving your business is a mind boggling thing to do and very tedious when you still have to work and keep customers happy. It will also keep you up at night, hoping you’re doing the right thing. Rich Knapp and his staff at Apocalyptic Bike Works did just that. At their old location, they had begun to run out of room due to a thriving amount of business and a great customer base. He found his new location at in Hixson, TN just off Highway 153.

M

Rich and his staff operate a full motorcycle shop including servicing all makes and models, fabrication, custom paint and more. If you just need an oil change, he does that too (And I’m told he has the lowest tire prices in town). Stop in and see Rich and tell him the Mag Man sent you there.

After fixing up the building, painting and handling the ground work and parking lot, he moved his entire shop, lifts, tools, furniture, stock and all and opened August 13th to a good crowd of folks looking to see their new place, and enter for the great door prizes, listen to some live music by Casey Carpenter and meet Rich himself. Southern Biker Magazine and KZ-106’s Scott Chase was there to welcome in folks and partake of some pizza, BBQ and cold beverages.

Sound Advice from Your Attorney It's Football Time in Tennessee! Now How Do I Avoid a DUI After the Game?

A

fter successfully handling over 3,000 DUI cases, there are a few reoccurring themes on how folks run into trouble. First recommendation for avoiding a DUI is not to put yourself in the situation in the first place (aka “Booze it, Lose it”). Rest assured, not only can a DUI damage your reputation, your family life, lead to loss of employment, loss of driving Marcos Garza privileges, affect handgun carry permit, etc. it’s also very dangerous business. Practically speaking, a $10-$60 cab ride/ Uber can save you around $20,000! Common Mistakes 1. Thinking that it won’t happen to me. There’s a first time for everyone. Just because you’ve got away with it for the last 10 years, doesn’t mean another 10 will last. 2. “Belief” that a couple glasses of water or cup of coffee will make you alert or sober. Water or a cup of coffee doesn’t make you sober, just more hydrated and drunk or more awake and drunk. Time is the only way to truly sober up. 3. People often ask what should I tell an officer if he or she asks if I’ve had something to drink? Do I tell the truth? Although the author cannot recommend giving a false statement to an officer (potentially a crime), rest assured that ANY admission of drinking an alcoholic beverage will likely lead to the necessary “probable cause” that an officer needs for your arrest. You always have a right to remain silent! Exercise it!! 4. Always be nice to officers. Cooperative doesn’t mean you have to incriminate yourself. Simply being polite and being kind is more likely to lead to NOT being arrested or at the very least makes your case far more defendable down the road. 5. To blow or not to blow (to give blood or not): Although refusing a test can possibly lead to your loss of license, this is not an automatic action. When in doubt, providing additional evidence will likely lead to a stronger case against you. It is your right to refuse a blood or breath test. 6. Make sure your headlights, taillights, running lights, reverse lights, blinkers, even your license plate lights are all in working order. Don’t give someone an additional reason to pull you over. Remember that registration sticker you got in the mail? As soon as it comes in the mail, GO to your car and put it on. There is no need to give police a perfectly valid reason to pull you over when you’ve potentially been drinking. 7. Motorcycles. Although it is technically legal to have a drink, and for some of us, two drinks and drive a car, I do not recommend driving a motorcycle under any circumstances. Give yourself a chance to avoid an accident; don’t throw your leg over that bike if you’ve had ANYTHING to drink. Best Ways to Avoid A DUI 1. Don’t drink when you go out. Leave the drinking for when you are safely at home. 2. Plan, plan, plan. Arrange a ride at the beginning of the night, before your decision-making is altered in any way. Don’t drive to the bar, have someone drive you and then you can’t drive back. 3. Go ahead, download the taxi app, the Uber app—fill in the credit card info to make the ordering easier and quicker later, arrange for a sober ride in advance of your potentially impaired decision making… A cab is always cheaper than a DUI.
