words from the publisher
Hello Folks,
Hope this finds you doing well. Fall is upon us and we are excited about riding and enjoying the cooler weather. Lots of great events coming up in October around the south and you don't want to miss them. Biketoberfest and Thunder Beach happening in Florida. We always enjoy going to Florida in the fall. Randy and I returned from Florida and the Keys to celebrate his 50th birthday. What an awesome time we had. We brought the bikes with us along with our scuba equipment and as much stuff as we could fit in our Yukon. We stayed at August Seven Inn in Daytona for two days and were treated marvelously by Joseph, his mother and Phillip. The accommodations were wonderful and very relaxing. It is conveniently located near everything. See their ad in this issue. We travelled to the Keys next and stayed at the Lime Tree Bay Resort. Again we were treated with great care and hospitality by the inn keepers. It is located on the bay side and sunsets were breathtakingly beautiful. All the flora and fauna we saw amazed us. Creatures are used to being in close contact with people and aren't afraid. We saw huge iguanas, lizards, land crabs, herons and lots of fish while scuba diving. Riding our motorcycles to Key West was again an amazing experience. The Seven Mile bridge seems to go on forever. We visited many of the famous establishments and did the tourist thing. I grew up in Homestead Florida and going to the keys every weekend was a normal part of our lives. It's been a while since I've been back to the Keys and it's just like I remember, not much has changed. It's a true paradise and we look forward to going back. I am fortunate to be married to my best friend and we enjoy getting to do the things we love together.

Carry the Flame & the Ride to the Wall
To Honor Our Fallen, POWs and Missing in Action
C
"
arry the Flame” is a sacred motorcycle ride across America event that occurs every year before Memorial Day and ends in Washington, DC on Memorial Day with a huge ceremony. Stops along the route include a ceremony which honors Gold Star and Blue Star families whose siblings have either made the supreme sacrifice or are currently in harm’s way on a battle field somewhere in the world. The names of those that were lost are read and all present have a chance to hold or touch the torch that is carried to the Vietnam wall from San Bernardino, California. Carry the Flame began in 2002 when King Cavalier II took the first ceremonial torch, borrowed from the Special Olympics to the Rolling Thunder Candlelight Vigil on Memorial weekend in Washington, DC. The Flame was lit and carried by representatives of the American Gold Star Mothers, American Gold Star Wives, and the Blue Star Mothers of America and continues to this day. The first Carry the Flame cross country tour took place in 2003 when riders leaving from California to Washington, DC carried the ceremonial torch to the Navajo/ Hopi reservation home of Lori Piestewa. It was lit in honor of the Lady Warrior; the first active duty female soldier lost in combat; the first American Native woman lost in service to the United States of America; and the first active duty female soldier lost in captivity as Prisoner of War. Rolling Thunder® Inc., Chapter Three had the honor of hosting this event which had a stop in Knoxville, TN at Knoxville Harley-Davidson with King Cavalier doing the MC honors. They also honored spectators at Quaker Steak & Lube’s bike night in front of over a thousand people displaying the missing man table and telling of its history. “The Ride to the Wall” began in 1989 with a motorcycle ride across America in route to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, DC centered at Memorial Day. The reason for the ride
10 - Southern Biker Magazine
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
is to remind America of the soldiers who are prisoners of war and those soldiers who are still missing in action. The ride also gives comfort and helps with healing among veterans and their families. The Knoxville stop during the route was at the TA Travel Center off I40 which was gathering point for riders coming from the West and South. Motorcycles in the hundreds pulled in represented by several motorcycle groups and individual riders from all over the country. From here all would continue the ride to the wall with this Rolling Thunder® event. Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts donated around 150 dozen donuts for this one stop alone. Hundreds of motorcyclists who arrived had plenty of donuts and coffee before heading out on their journey to the Nation’s Capital. “This is the annual ridedesigned to bring a level of awareness to the public that there are some 92,000 unaccounted for MIAs, POWs, and KIAs from all wars, still out there”’ said Jack Alman of the Rolling Thunder® Inc., Chapter 3. He continued, “The roar of the twentysixth annual Ride to the Wall was once
again heard across the country as over 500,000 motorcycles gathered in Washington, DC.” Next year’s event is already in the works and its one of those bucket list rides everyone needs to go on.

Destination Helen, Motorcycles and German Food
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
elen, GA is located in the Mountains of North Georgia and the town centers around an old time German theme. Pat Turner has produced one of the best laid back rallies anyone could every go to. And getting there is half the fun with North Georgia’s winding roads through farm land, mountains and roadside waterfalls. This year all the vendors were located in the parking lot of Chattahochee Biker Gear which made for good access to all the vendors and Pat’s shop all at the same time. We pulled in to Helen, GA just in time to meet up with some old friends for some shopping and dinner. The word is out on this rally and it continues to grow each and every year. Lots of motorcycles were all over the city. You could see them at retail shops, restaurants, pubs and even a candy store. The hotels seemed to be packed with motorycles and vehicles (who drove down) with motorcycle stickers on them. Here in Helen, everything is in walking distance, so if you don’t want to do the riding all over the area's scenic highways, you can always walk to everything the city offers. This event definitely brings in tourism dollars from the motorcycle industry. Even the vendors were packed into vendor row. With the new concert venue in the park, the organizers have made a new hit with spectators. A little rain didn’t hamper anyone’s great weekend music and fun.
Don’t miss Destination Helen next year, it continues to grow and become one of the go to rallies of the year.

9-11, WE WILL NOT FORGET
T
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
he images of that horrific day still cause Americans to stop and remember every September 11th. Twelve years later, people are still saying, WE WILL NEVER FORGET. The National Anthem proudly sung by Con Hunley and ceremony near complete, the 21 Gun Salute and then, TAPS played and heads bowed for Preacher Clough’s prayer. There was not a dry eye to be seen; everyone there, that day...remembered. During the ceremony this year in Knoxville, TN, several dignitaries who spoke including Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett reflected and remembered all those lives lost on 9/11 and those lost and still fighting the battle on terrorism. Several vendors and sponsors were on hand to support the event as well as hundreds of riders who came out and rode in remembrance of that day. Grand Marshal Jack Ryan led the group out with fire and police sirens blaring. As all the riders headed out, they flew the faces of those lost, provided in a carry case, proudly and keep them safe and remembered them throughout the ride. Ending at Naterz in Maryville, TN, the group arrived riding under a huge American Flag being presented by two fire engine ladder trucks. This is just an awesome ride and an awesome event to be a part of. I won’t ever forget the sacrifices made that day or any other day for that matter.

Son’s Honor Their Father
by Finishing the Ride That Never Ended
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy & the Bean Boys
R
obert “Bob” Bean joined the Spokane County Sheriff’s office in May of 1962. Out of three men, he was one of first motorcycle patrolmen as well as a rescue diver in Spokane, WA. After 32 years with the department Bob retired. During his retirement Bob pursued his passion of riding motorcycles. He traveled throughout the United States, doing the four corners of the country on three separate rides. One of Bob’s last trips took him south to Tennessee to spend time with his oldest son Lenny. They loaded up their bikes and headed to Daytona Bike Week 2011. At that time Bob and Lenny were already planning a return trip to Daytona, but this time with Bob’s other two boys, Mark and Randy. In September of 2011 while doing what he enjoyed most, riding, Bob had a stroke, sending him off the road and eventually sending him to be with our heavenly father. Bob’s three boys, determined to carry on the tradition and plans that he had dreamed of, started working on the details for Daytona 2013. Along with a couple close friends, Lenny, Randy, and Mark, “The Bean Boys”,
18 - Southern Biker Magazine
joined up in Lenoir City, TN where Lenny lives and headed to Daytona Beach, FL for Bike Week 2013. After a week of sharing memories, riding and honoring their father, they had made Bob’s dream come true. Returning from Daytona the Bean Boys took a ride through US129 the Tail of the Dragon and one of Bob’s favorite destinations, Lynchburg, TN. After a great week, Mark headed back to Albuquerque, NM and Randy headed back to Spokane, WA. Continuing to honor their father and his memory, the boys hooked up with the Spokane Sheriff’s Office and the Special Olympics in Washington to organize the First Annual Bob Bean Memorial Ride to benefit the Special Olympics of Washington. A father’s memory carried on by son’s who not only looked up to him, but he was the boys’ hero.......from day one.

Improve Your Riding Skills with Ride Like A Pro
I
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
f you have ever seen the group at rallies and events, you know one thing, the guys and gals at “Ride Like a Pro” can ride! And if you get the opportunity to take one of their classes, you can do nothing but improve your turning and riding skills. Meeting early in the morning after a brief rain at Oskies Sports Bar’s parking lot, the class was given instructions from Scott Ford, our Ride Like a Pro instructor. He explained in detail what we were going to accomplish and how he wanted us to throttle, clutch and brake the motorcycle during the exercises. Before each exercise he would teach us what to do, ride the course using those instructions on his bike and then it was our turn to do it. Nobody is perfect but I learned I wasn’t as good at slow speeds and turning as I thought, but I did get better and better as the day’s activities went on; as well as everyone in the class. At
20 - Southern Biker Magazine
the end of the day we all got a great meal at Oskies Sports Bar and were presented with course completion certificates. Ride Like a Pro will be in your area
soon and I would advise everyone who wants to take an advance course in slow speed turning and skills to take this course. My wife and I personally endorse them.

N
ext Spring on April 4, 2014, two icons of freedom will roll onto the silver screen with the release of Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Fans at San Diego Comic-Con were excited to see exclusive footage of the film including the reveal of Steve Rogers’ choice of Harley-Davidson® in this movie. In the upcoming film, Steve Rogers’ character will be riding HarleyDavidson’s newest Softail® motorcycle, the Breakout. Launched to the world in March, the Breakout makes a modern statement, but harkens back to the timeless aesthetics for which HarleyDavidson is known. “Captain America and Harley-Davidson have had a long and glorious association dating back to the introduction of the character in 1939,” said Dino Bernacchi, HarleyDavidson Marketing Communication Director. “He’s ridden different Harleys throughout the history of the character, and his bike for ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ needed to fit the modern day setting of this story. Our newest model, the Softail Breakout, with custom touches that personalize the bike for his character was the perfect choice for this film.” “Captain America makes the perfect marketing partner for HarleyDavidson as he truly embodies the iconic, heroic, and American aspects of our brand,” said Bernacchi. “Both
Captain America and our motorcycles are great symbols of freedom.” Marvel Entertainment Sneak Peak After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemythe Winter Soldier.

As you probably already know, as of today, there is no museum commemorating all those pioneers who raced the Salts of Utah (there was a small one, defunct 14 years ago.) 18 months ago, Wendover, Utah Mayor Mike Crawford and local Bonneville enthusiast John House announced that they had secured a five-acre plot of land on the eastern end of town, right off Interstate 80, where they planned to erect a 25,000-square-foot building that chronicles not just the history of land-speed racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats, but also the story of the Salt Flats and the town of Wendover’s contributions to land-speed racing. Getting the donation of the property was a huge undertaking in itself, but phase 1 is now completed with road access approved by Utah Dept. of Transportation. To begin phase 2, the organization is still looking for donations, architecture design help, advertising and web hosting support etc, anything and everything you can think of able to help this important project.

Copelands - Hidden on a backstreet in Kingston is the taste of Chicago. Copeland’s serves up the best sandwiches and dawgs around. They are located at 104 Martin Street close to Lil Caesars Pizza. You can get a Chicago Italian beef with homemade chips for $8.99. It’s shaved roast beef in Au Jus served on gonnella bread with hot giardiniera relish and sauteed green peppers. A 6” cheese steak with grilled onions and peppers is $6.99. If your really hungry, try the zack attack; 1/2 lb hamburger steak with onions, mushrooms and cheese sauce served on home fries at $8.99. They have many types of dawgs but try the Kansas City. A vienna beef dog with BBQ, kraut, onion, bacon and provolone at $2.99. Whatever you pick you’ll go back for more, but you must have a deep fried Moon pie: double layered chocolate moon pie deep fried and drizzled with chocolate at $2.99.
