WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hello SBMag Readers,
It's the month of our Nation's birthday and the patriotic riding public are out wearing red, white & blue and flying the American Flag on their motorcycles. We are no different here, my husband just put up a new American Flag and dropped off our old flag to the local Boy Scouts who retire flags as they are suppose to be done.
The weather is hot and getting hotter so make sure to hydrate (with water or Gatorade) and keep yourself in cool spirits. We use a Cool-vest on extremely hot days and it works great; dip them in cold water and it keeps you cool up to 4-hours of riding. I also use a cool-wrap neck wear to keep my temps down. At rest stops, just pour some cold water on it and it is refreshed and ready to go.
Don't forget we have many rides coming up in July. We will be attending and are sponsoring the Fallen Soldier's March, Poker & Bug Run at Bumpus Harley-Davidson in Murfreesboro TN. It's their 7th Annual ride and it looks to be one of the go-to rides of the season. These folks are dedicated to helping veterans with 100% of every dollar donated going toward the charity. They provide service dogs for veterans in need. We hope to see you there. We have very hectic schedules as most of you do too and we find it difficult sometimes to find time to ride because we have so much work to do. It seems like our lives get more and more hectic and not much gets accomplished. We are trying to get focused on the important things in life and spend time with loved ones when we can. Our families are spread out across the southeastern states and it makes it difficult to see all them, but it sound like a road trip is in our future. Hope to see you on the road soon! “Keep Your Knees In The Breeze!”© Kristin “Ms. Mag Man” Gracy

The Great Smoky Mountains
HOG RALLY By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
OG Rallies have changed even from a year ago. They are developing into larger more personable HOG Rallies. Gone are the State HOG Rallies. Now there will be multi-State Regional HOG Rallies. The first one on the East Coast was set for May 29 – June 2, 2018 and was to be called, The Great Smoky Mountains HOG Rally. Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson and the town of Maryville, Tennessee played host to the largest HOG crowd in years and the largest Tennessee has ever seen. Over 3,000 riders attended the rally and the tourism for the area skyrocketed. From registration to the opening ceremonies to the closing of gates on the final day, folks enjoyed southern hospitality and the best riding this country has to offer. Centered in the middle of arguably the most famous ride on the planet, the Dragon, this rally had more than one road and 111 curves planned for everyone. Different rides were theme named and planned daily like the Manhattan Project to the American Museum of Science and Energy. The Black Bear Poker run was enjoyed by hundreds but especially those who won a couple hundred dollars for the best hand. Other rides explored local scenery and places that are a must see; Wheels Through Time Ride, Bald River Falls, the Cherohala Skyway and many more. Lots of attendees rode their own ride and explored the surrounding areas with great enthusiasm. The GSMHR’s Flat Track Harley Hooligan Races was nice get away for some as hundreds watched races vying for trophies. This type of racing brings out the best in old school racing. Boswell HD’s Hooligan Racing represented well as Bubba Boswell won the Amateur Class, and Chris Boone won the Singles and the Hooligan Open. Jay Hooper said, “This is an over the top display of thrills and skills on Tennessee red clay dirt!” Blocked off for motorcycles only, the city of Maryville rolled out the red carpet for a day and attendees enjoyed music, fun and games in Maryville’s historic downtown. The slow races on Broadway were a big hit as well. Nightly entertainment was also happening at the Shed Smokehouse & Juke Joint on the grounds of SMHD hosted a ton of entertainment nightly; Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Show, Green River: The Ultimate CCR Tribute Band, The Wildflowers: A Tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and many more entertained masses under the Shed. The annual HOGs vs PIGs Competition was extremely competitive, but the winds of change blew in again as the Police Motor Officers took home the trophy for the PIGs Team. > continued on page 10

There was so much to do; you couldn’t get to it all with the exception of one… Mother Nature. She visited nearly every location, event and ride every day. But that never deterred those HarleyDavidson riders to attend the rides and events scheduled for the week. Freddie Thompson said, “Fabulous HOG Rally” while Debra Herman said, “A huge Thank you to Tennessee State Troopers during the Great Smoky Mountain HOG Rally. (Very dedicated Officers.)” Steve Dascall stated, “…awesome mountain rides, sweeping vistas and beautiful views with great friends. Life is good.” Scott Maddux and his staff of volunteers really outdid themselves and put on one outstanding rally. It was definitely one for the books. Next year’s southern HOG Rally is yet to be determined, but the Great Smoky Mountain HOG Rally has set the bar pretty dang high.

70's Honda 50
Honda Brings Back the Past
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
.remember my very first motorcycle like it was yesterday. I received a Honda 50 for Christmas after turning 5 years old. It was some of the best days of my life; racing my cousin Alan Gracy on his up and down North Hills drive in Crossville, Tennessee, riding with family and friends in the neighborhood. I was on Cloud Nine! Ahhhhhh, those were the days… or were they? Honda unveiled their concept of the Monkey (looks very similar to their old Honda 50) at the Tokyo Motor Show last year and made it available to the European markets, but not the US market. Well, the wait is over. It was unveiled for the American market in Tennessee at the Smoky Mountain Crawl centered in the small town of Townsend for small bore motorcycles. American Honda Manager of Motorcycle Marketing Communications Lee Edmunds recalled the iconic “You meet the nicest people” ad campaign of the 1960s as he introduced the Monkey (and the new retro-inspired Super Cub C125). He was quoted as saying, “We’re continuing the tradition of offering American customers machines that are simultaneously nostalgic and up-to-date, and that beg to be ridden and personalized.” The new Monkey (will be imported from Japan) has familiar styling cues like a big cushy minibanana seat, fat tires, upside-down forks and an old-school exhaust pipe. It also comes with some really nice upgrades, too; all-LED lighting, an LCD digital gauge and front-wheel ABS (optional). This Monkey isn’t coming with that old original 49cc engine, it upgraded to Honda’s horizontal single 125 cc. It also no longer has the knobby dirt tires and instead Honda opted for fat street tires. The gas tank holds 1.5 gallons of gas, but this fuel injected machine will get you an astounding 157mpg! Weighing in at The Mag Man’s weight of just 234 pounds, this newest version has a 125cc air-cooled SOHC power-plant with two valves and EFI. It comes with electric start, a standard clutch with 4-speed transmission and disc brakes. The single round digital gives you a “welcome message” when you turn it on and then it houses all you need: a speedometer, tachometer, odometer, two trip meters, and a fuel gauge. The two retro paint schemes will bring back memories as well; Pearl Nebula Red and Banana Yellow. This Honda beauty will be available in October and first come first served. Make your deposit and get in line for this one as the MSRP will be $3999 for the standard version and add $200 for ABS (in Red version only).

5th Annual Xtreme Couture
RIDE FOR THE TROOPS By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
Photos by Sherry Hubbard
F
ormer 6-Time UFC Champion and MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture held his 5th Annual Xtreme Couture Ride honoring our troops and benefiting the Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation. Randy Couture is an Army Veteran and supporting our military is close to his heart. It is also close most everyone that rides and this ride continues to grow each and every year. Close to a hundred riders participated this year and everyone enjoyed meeting with Champ. This year Xtreme Rider Leather & Accessories and Momma’s Pub hosted the riders in Warm Springs, Georgia located on Main Street (Lil Sturgis St). It was gathering of friends and strangers coming together for a common cause… our Soldiers. Couture began his charity nine years ago to help the wounded troops returning from overseas deployment. There is no paid staff for the foundation, its all volunteers and thus 100% of everything donated and raised goes directly to the soldiers. Couture stated, “The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and funds for our vets. Our vets that are making the transition from active duty to being a civilian again and many of those guys, especially the ones that are wounded, deal with some financial stress so we try to take some of that financial stress off. Every penny we raise goes into the hands of a soldier and his family. There’s no one that gets paid out of my foundation but soldiers.” Next year will be the 6th annual ride so make plans to attend a great ride for an outstanding charity. The Kentucky Kid Nicky Hayden Statue Unveiled By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
n July of 2006, Nicky Hayden won a huge victory at Luguna Seca Raceway. An iconic photo was taken of Nicky as he began his victory lap with the American Flag hoisted above his head. That image will forever be remembered in his hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky a life-size bronze sculpture celebrating his life and his international motorcycle racing successes was unveiled. Last year while overseas preparing for a race, Nicky was riding his bicycle as he’s done a million times. But fate stepped in and he was struck by an automobile. He died after a brief fight for his life. Nicky’s family joined hundreds of friends and fans on the front lawn of the Owensboro Convention Center, where the sculpture is permanently installed on a granite base inscribed with The Kentucky Kid’s many accomplishments. Bringing the statue from Colorado where it was made was an adventure as well. The statue’s artist George Lundeen, said, “As we were driving … we had him wrapped up pretty well, but we didn’t have the number on the motorcycle wrapped up. About every 10 minutes, somebody would come up beside us, honk the horn, and give us a big thumbs-up. ‘That’s Nicky Hayden!’ ” Tommy Hayden spoke of the last time he remembers his brother: “We were in Imola, Italy… His bike had broken (during first race)… He had crashed three times over the course of the weekend… Race 2 result was much worse than he expected… He was angry, frustrated, disappointed, and clearly down. It was time for his post-race media debrief…There was a huge crowd of people waiting for him to come out (his trailer), hoping to get a photo or maybe an autograph. He (went through the crowd and almost to the cart)… He noticed a young boy in a wheelchair, who was both mentally and physically challenged, and very happy to see him. (Nicky) turned around, back through the crowd, into the race transporter, and grab a pair of his used knee sliders. For those of you who don’t know what those are, they are very prized souvenirs for a fan. He returned to the kid in the wheelchair, said a few words, signed the knee sliders, and gave them to the kid. What Nicky didn’t see as he rode off was both parents of the handicapped kid break into tears and start hugging each other. This was classic Nicky: no high too high, no low too low for him to change who he was, what he believed in, or how he lived his life.” After the statue was unveiled, Owensboro Mayor Tom Watson proclaimed June 9 (6/9) “Nicky Hayden Day,” the date referencing Hayden’s racing number, 69. Cooper Hayden, representing the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame, announced that Nicky Hayden would be inducted later this year as part of the class of 2018. Nicky Hayden’s top racing accomplishments: ‘97 AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award winner, ‘99 AMA Ricky Graham Rookie of the Year, ‘99 AMA Pro Athlete of the Year, ‘99 AMA 600cc Supersport Champion, ‘02 Daytona 200 winner, ‘02 AMA Superbike Champion, ‘03 MotoGP Rookie of the Year, ‘06 MotoGP World Champion, ‘15 MotoGP Legend.

4TH ANNUAL SPRING
Redneck Rumble
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy Contributing Photos by Candy Hurst
W
hen it rains it pours and this year Mother Nature again tried to put a damper on all the redneck fun at the James Ward AG Center in Lebanon, Tennessee for the 4th Annual Spring Redneck Rumble. It’s as if someone said, “Can it get any better than this” and Mother Nature said, “Here, hold my beer.” Folks and rednecks alike that attend these types of event, if it rains, well, they don’t let a little water spoil the fun, they just bring out the slip-n-slide. Rat rods-rusted magnificent running machines, cars that were slammed and some with hydraulics that could be slammed with push of button…they were all here. Trucks, cars, vans, motorcycles and a combination of some were on display for the attendees or even ready to win trophies in the show. Trophies were awarded in every division and many walked away with some pretty unique custom metal trophies. Vendors of every kind were set up if you needed to buy parts, memorabilia, household items and collectables. Shoot, they even had some of these rat rods for sale. I like the old metal signs from gas stations, oil companies, beer stuff, etc. to hang in my barn at home. Scooter says, “THE REDNECK RUMBLE is the south’s biggest and baddest hot rod, custom car and rat rod show, swap meet and lifestyle show, plus demolition derby and live music” you will ever attend. Don’t miss this year’s finale at the 13th Annual Fall Redneck Rumble September 14-15 at the Wilson Expo Center in Lebanon, TN. Come get your Redneck on and we’ll see you there!
