Hello Folks, Hope this finds you doing well. We went to Panama City Beach FL to attend the Spring Thunder Beach Rally; what a great turnout! We were proud to host the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show and this year we had more entries than ever! Our staff and friends stepped up and were awesome to help out with this event. Bike show competition continues to get stronger and stronger each show, raising the bar for the next event. The details on these motorcycles is mind blowing. Such passion, creativity and love go into these creations with beautiful results. What is so impressive is there is not another motorcycle like the entries. People love to view the spectacular two- and threewheel machines and talk with owners to get their inspiration back ground. One past entry stands out in my mind, a pink and white Softail Deluxe with bling everywhere (because who doesn’t like to

see something shine and sparkle??). The inspiration reflected the fight against breast cancer. It was a beautiful and moving tribute to those who fought and are fighting breast cancer. Kudos!

ave you ever thought of constructing your own engine that makes others go “Wow – I want that!”? These two engines may give you some inspiration to create your own unique V2 rocket with plenty of get up and go power to boot. Nostalgia Harley engines have never faded out of the limelight, in fact, classic Harley engines have always had positive trends with bikers through the decades. Today, the choices of building powerful classic styled engines are many, with almost every aftermarket supplier offering various types of large bore engine components, cases, cylinders, and heads. Big bore cases are definitely a part of the equation of maximising those extra needed cubes for potential power gains. Some probably have their own visual concept of how a mega cube engine should end up looking like. This is where individuality becomes reality—to design a one-off engine that not only produces plenty of torque and power, but also has a cosmetic dazzle hypnotising fellow bikers. Deciding to use a Knuckle, Pan, or Shovel top end head design is a personal preference. Quality mix and match aftermarket cases and heads can be machined, modified, and matched to fit many cylinder barrels up to 4.250” diameter. Anything over 4.250” will usually require a custom package. Reputable engine parts from S&S, Flathead Power, Delkron, RB Racing, Axtell, R&R and Hyperformance all have various engine components to piece together any mega-bore engine displacement to satisfy any customer to their wildest dreams.

In 1981, John Harman, who was based in California, designed the first production big bore engine ground pounding the tarmac in the USA. His 120 cubic inch engine was designed with a 9/16” taller deck height, and a 3/8” wider left case to allow a 4.300” bore diameter using a stock stroke. The Harman kit included cases, jugs and pistons, heads and valves, and 3/8’’ longer pinion shaft.

Knuckshovster, 132 cu.in. engine; with ported and flowed STD heads, custom knuckle rocker-boxes fitted with Jims roller rockers and shafts, Hyperformance 4.300” cylinders & pistons. Going completely ballistic with modified parts on the Harman engine can’t be helped. Many parts were either redesigned, or altered and machined to fit. For instance, an additional auxiliary oil pump was added to the Vertex magneto housing. It was connected directly to the camshaft to feed oil to the top end. Four individual CNC machined rocker-boxes with removable top lids, including custom-made rocker shafts replaced the original OEM parts. After 5 years, kick starting this beast, and nine bent kick axles, an electric starter was added. Compression release plugs were also used for fast easy cranking on start-ups. The 40mm Del-orto carbs were replaced with two Typhoon carbs from Carls Speed Shop. Having owned two of these Harman engines, and rebuilding others, I knew most of the shortcuts and issues to make these engines run right and be reliable at the same time. The drainage oil galleries from the heads were blocked-off, and replaced with external lines to the crankcase. Heads and cylinders were bolted down using thin cooper gaskets instead of o-rings. Larger diameter head bolts with inserts, and a modified breather were other changes. The original rear piston was lighter having a large cut out to clear the front piston skirt. A new set of Hyperformance pistons fixed that issue having slots on each piston skirt when passing each other. This also kept piston skirts the same length for balance and stability. Other minor issues were the 2-1/4” thin stem inlet valves requiring lash caps, and the beefing up of both exhaust and inlet ports to hold the pipes and carbs. Harman engine kits broke the barrier influencing other engine designers to follow the same concept that has created all different types of large bore engine displacements. Today, John Harman engines are rare, and those that have them, usually keep them. Even though there were under 100 Harman big bore kits ever produced 36 years ago, these engines still display a powerful presence all on their own. Bouncing around all day on a hardtail with a huge mega bore engine give anyone the real feel of nostalgia. Vibrating yourself to bits on the open road is forgotten. My 132 cubic inch Knuckshovster mounted into an Atlas hardtail frame did just that. The engines’ massive oversized cylinders bolted down on S&S Sportster cases with weird looking Knuckle rocker boxes, automatically created a vacuum of bewildered onlookers with lots of positive chitchat. For longterm reliability, the 132” Knuckshovster was built with only quality made U.S. engine parts from S&S, Jims Machine, Zippers, Crane, Carls Speed Shop, 4 Hyperformance, STD, and Andrews. What will be my next engine? Who knows, it’s been a while, whatever it is, it will certainly have to have some of that same classic nostalgia. Maybe a Panshovester with a horrendous bore and stroke.

yle Petty Charity Ride Across America celebrated its 25th anniversary and the riders rode the longest route in the ride’s history for a total of 3,697.2 miles. Over 250 riders traveled the entire distance raising money to send kids in need to Victory Junction, a camp dedicated to providing lifechanging camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The ride was a true corner-to-corner route across the United States starting in Seattle, Washington on May 3rd and ending in Key Largo, Florida on May 11 traveling through 11 states in just nine days. Petty said, “This year’s route is special because we’ve (brought) back a few of our favorite ride stops from past years, like Glenwood Springs, Santa Fe and Childress, but we also added in a bunch of new places that our riders will love. I may be biased, but I believe this year’s ride is the best ever! We’ve gone north to south and west to east, but never corner to corner. Seattle to the Keys is a bucket list ride…” Spectators who showed up along the route were encouraged to attend one of the ride’s nine overnight stops or daily fuel stops to greet Petty and the riders, purchase memorabilia and make donations. Ginny Talley, a KPR Communications Specialist said “because of the ride, 8,185 children have attended Victory Junction at no cost to their families. Last year alone, the ride raised $1.3 million and sent 100 children to camp. Victory Junction has served as the ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor of his late son, Adam. Among the celebrities that rode this year were NASCAR Hall of Famer and seven-time champion Richard Petty, NASCAR legends Harry Gant, Hershel McGriff and Donnie Allison, current NASCAR driver David Ragan,

former Formula 1 Champ Car and NASCAR driver Max Papis, former NFL great and Heisman Trophy winner (1982) Herschel Walker, Heisman Trophy winner (1980) George Rogers, and NBC Sports NASCAR personalities Krista Voda, Rutledge Wood and Rick Allen. Petty went on to say, “It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since the ride started. What started as just a few friends riding motorcycles to racetracks around the country has turned into something so much bigger than I could’ve ever imagined. Because of our sponsors, fans and the people who participate in this ride, whether they’re veteran participants or first-timers, so many deserving kids get to have the time of their life at Victory Junction each year.” Now in its 25th year, more than 8,400 riders have logged 12 million cumulative motorcycle miles and raised more than $18.5 million for Victory Junction and other children’s charities. It Takes Special People to Care for Those They Don’t Even Know By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

n Tennessee afternoon, a storm was approaching. Wind was kicking everything up and turning everything over. Bridgette Moss and her boyfriend Clay Wright decided to take a glass table inside so it didn’t break. At that moment a crack sounded and in a blink of an eye, the tree fell hard to the ground and pounded Bridgette into the ground too. Clay, thinking she was either dead or going to die rushed and got a couple firemen who were nearby. Day’s end, she suffered three broken and two herniated discs in her upper neck, her lower back was broken in one spot, her right femur was shattered into 10 pieces and put back together, her right tibia was broken, her right knee was broke in different places, her left hand broken and she also had a brain bleed. A single mother of two and possibly out of work for possibly a year, enter one of those special people. JD Vincent wants no credit, but he usually jumps the gun and forges ahead when his family is hurt. You see, his friends are his family. A benefit was put on at Ridge Runners Bar & Grill for Bridgette with lots of folks coming to donate, the live auction, the 50/50 raffle, the food and some awesome music by CJ Ausburn. Everything at this benefit was donated from the food to the music to the auction items. Bridgette was so shocked to see that many folks coming to help her…most all, she didn’t know. I know how this works first hand when I had heart surgery. “But that’s what we do. We take care of friends in need and we don’t wait because bills pile up in a hurry”, said JD. He also knows this first hand, because a couple years back, when he was deathly sick and out of work for weeks, a benefit was held in his honor. “It helped me keep my house, truck, motorcycle… everything. And I will always jump to help my friends in need”, he continued. “It’s what we do.” Hundreds of dollars was raised at the benefit for Bridgette and the money will hopefully help in some small way to help her the same way. And if needed, we’ll have another one for her.

ost Hurricane Michael and returning to the Panama City Beach shores, the 21st Annual Thunder Beach Spring Rally commenced! Thousands of motorcycle riders from all over the country and some outside the USA, came to take advantage of 75-85 degree weather and virtually no rain (about 2 hours worth on Saturday). But one of the largest crowds in some time came to enjoy the sun, the sand, the surf…and the best that PCB had to offer. The staff from Thunder Beach Productions outdid themselves by putting together one of their best rallies. The SBMag Crew had to work overtime since I was injured with a fractured solder, fractured pelvis and elbow and a broken

nose (some said it was an improvement). But for all their help, I went above and beyond for dinner and drinks the entire rally. We had great times at Buster’s Beer and Baits, Bricks & Barley Pizza, Sisters by the Sea, Outlaw BBQ and our kickoff party at Dat Cajun. But that’s not all; Chris Anderson of the Thunder Beach Productions team set the team up with VIP passes for the concerts and media passes for the photos. EVERYONE had a blast!

The concerts included Colt Ford, Black Stone Cherry, the LACS and more at Frank Brown Park and were free to everyone. Other venues had some great acts like Miss Intent, Mustang Sally, Buck Wild, Geneva and many more! At Frank Brown Park they also had Circus Una and their high flying motorcycle act. The Crossroads venue highlighted with Miss Intent on stage who was Total PINK. It was also the host site for the Harley-Davidson and Indian Demo Rides to go on.

Hammerhead Fred’s kicked off the week with Buck Wild on Wednesday night and a preliminary round for Ms. Thunder Beach and as a cat would have said, “Me-wow”. Thursday, Friday and Saturday were great days to ride the coast, hit some of the vendors or just relax on the beach. The SBMag Crew found their way to other spots too; SiK Cycles, Hanger 67, Ms Newby’s, AJs, Sharky’s, Off the Hook and more!

This year the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show we host had the largest number of motorcycles entered we’ve ever had. Over 70 motorcycles from all over the country came to enter and possibly win the coveted 6-ft custom painted surfboards and place in the show to receive one of the 14” Kona Wood laser engraved trophies. The farthest person to be in the show was Ben Johnson from Washington State! We also had several new Invicta watches to give away for the entrants. Hundreds came to see the bikes and see who won.

he 2019 AMA Supercross Season came to end with a new face atop the podium. Cooper Webb from Morehead City, NC took home his first Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship at the series finale in Las Vegas. Webb took KTM back to the podium and a familiar face that has been with so many Supercross Champions, Roger DeCoster. Even though Webb finished in third-place in the Main Event at Sam Boyd Stadium, his18 point lead over eventual second place rider Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac gave him the title. Other winners from that same night who claimed titles were: In the 250SX classes, the West title went to Yamaha rider Dylan Ferrandis and the 250SX East title went to Honda rider Chase Sexton. Ferrandis won the 250SX Main Event in Las Vegas, finishing the season 15 points ahead of Kawasaki

rider Adam Cianciarulo. Sexton finished fourth in Las Vegas, ending with 13 points ahead of Yamaha rider Justin Cooper. “The AMA congratulates all three AMA Supercross champions,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Monster Energy AMA Supercross showcases the best riders in the world, and Cooper, Dylan and Chase brought the focus, energy and dedication necessary to emerge victorious at the end of a grueling season.” AMA Rookie of the Year in the 450SX class went to Kawasaki rider Joey Savatgy and in the 250SX class the AMA Rookie of the Year went to Kawasaki rider Garrett Marchbanks. GOLDEN AGE OF ROYAL ENFIELD BIKES

ust when one thought the 1960’s “Golden Age” of British motorcycles was relegated to museums and private collections the venerable Royal Enfield marque is back with a vengeance… not that they ever went away. During the late 1960’s while better known BSA, Norton, Triumph and others fell by the wayside, Royal Enfield – who built their first motorcycles in 1901 – continued nonstop, thanks to their fortunate “Madras Connection”, a massive 1954 order from the Indian army to supply 800 350 cc OHV singles, chosen for their renowned “performance, reliability and ease of maintenance”. In a joint venture with the Indian Government a manufacturing plant was set up in India and by the 1970’s the 350 cc Bullet was being imported to its very birthplace, England... soon to be outsold by the legendary 500 cc Bullet practically unchanged since the 1950’s apart from upgrades; electric start, better electrics, turn signals and disc brakes. Last year came the big news; Royal Enfield’s newly engineered Continental 650 cc Twins, available in two models, the Continental 650 cc Twin and sportier GT 650 cc Twin Cafe Racer, were 26 - Southern Biker Magazine

launched to international kudos. Sales rocketed to record highs; demand for Continental 650’s forcing the factory to hire extra help (aiming to produce 4,000 to 5000 units per month up from 2,500 in April). The company is also planning to open an additional factory in Thailand to service growing back orders from the US, Australia and Thailand, not to mention the UK. The Continental and GT are powered by identical 648 cc parallel-twin liquid -cooled engines producing 47 bhp delivering impressive rear wheel power via their newly designed six-speed gearbox. The powerful GT’s are sleek, sexy, smooth to boot! The engine feels quite happy accelerating from 30 MPH in sixth gear to 70 without issues. Speedshifting at 4,000 RPM proved more than adequate negotiating ordinary riding needs, blazingly fast as a Spitfire at 6,500 RPM when adrenaline called for a bit more adventure.

CONTINENTAL GT - THE ULTIMATE

Fellow veteran road sports rider, George Smith and I decided to match his 2015 Motto Guzzi V7 750cc racer against the GT, see how they compared over normal bend swinging. Properly suited up, visors down, the bikes nosed off for a test ride on sparsely trafficked country roads, ideal for bending speed limits, from time to time switching mounts to better compare notes. “The first word that comes to mind after riding the RE is ‘adequate’ “George notes,” but that has all the wrong connotations. The GT has enough power, is comfortable, has a total lack of drama with its sharp handling - in short, a stellar bike. I felt completely at home and in control before I had ever reached sixth gear. Chasing a well-ridden Guzzi over unfamiliar country roads, I felt the confidence and control that let

me relax and imagine myself an above average rider. Comparing the GT to the Guzzi V7 was a natural match. Both bikes make almost the same power and weight is similar. The GT proved smoother at speed but has a slight tingle in the grips. The Guzzi throbs, but not obnoxiously and I doubt either would interfere with the exhilarating enjoyment of a ride. The Enfield suspension is exponentially more comfortable on rough roads; I felt really dialed in. Saddles on both are firm but the RE felt just the same at the end of the ride as at the start, where the Guzzi is suggesting a break might be in order. While the Guzzi extra 100 cc gave it a slight edge in our top-gear roll-on, the GT proved slightly faster. Even sitting in the driveway, the sporty GT looks like a seductively crouched hungry tiger, eager to gobble up the competition, on the track that is – can’t wait to sign up!
