This the mega motorcycle event we all look forward to attending every year and it never fails to amaze most everyone who attends; big name entertainment, all the motorcycle manufacturers, all the motorcycle industry VIPs, every vendor you can imagine and that’s before we start listing all the hundreds of thousands that attend from around the world! If you have never been, all I can say is SEE YOU THERE! Florida weather today in Daytona was 81º while here in Tennessee it topped out at a rainy 46º. We are anxious to see our friends from across the pond; Danilo & Bibi, Bernd & Suzi, Paul & Vicki Diamond, Paul & Sam Buca, Fredrick & Anu Kamis, not to mention all of our great American friends. At Daytona Beach Bike Week this month, make sure you are prepared for an awesome event. Make sure to bring your checkbook and credit cards… there’s a lot to see and buy, including new motorcycles. The Supercross also returns to the Daytona International Speedway along with the Daytona 200 Sportbike race, the Daytona TT Flat Track Races and Ricky Carmichael’s Amateur Motocross. Out at the New Smyrna Speedway, Billy Lane is bringing vintage motorcycle
racing back to life with his Son’s of Speed Racing. Hundreds of spectators enjoy a day filled with vintage motorcycles reaching 100+ miles per hour. Once you get there, make you mandatory list of things to do and then make a list of want to do. It’s the only way you won’t miss those things that are important to you. You might catch us on Main Street in some of our favorite spots, like the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon, watching the band Hayfire at Full Moon Saloon, Jasmine Cain at Dirty Harry’s and meeting up with Randy Tipton and friends at Main Street Station. Just look for the Southern Biker Road Crew shirts. You might find us at our favorite dining and watering holes too, like Finn’s, Racings North Turn, Bruno’s Pizzeria, Zappi’s Italian Garden and many others. The season is kicking off with every type of motorcycle racing, top music entertainers, some of the best food in the world and hundreds of thousands of like-minded motorcycle enthusiast. My husband is getting his motorcycle fixed after a young lady backed over it…twice! Southern Iron Kustoms in Panama City Beach FL will be doing the honors of fixing his machine, so look for us at Thunder Beach for the unveiling. Speaking of Thunder Beach, both it and Leesburg Bikefest are just around the corner too. Those are going to be a couple awesome events you will not want to miss either. Hope to see you out on the road… on the Florida Coast!

RIDING A MOTORCYCLE IMPROVED METRICS of Focus and Decreased Stress Biomarkers, According to a New Neurobiological Study
Via Harley-Davidson
M
otorcyclists have long championed riding as their main road to stress relief and positive mental health. Today, the results of a neurobiological study conducted by a team of three researchers from UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior yielded pioneering scientific evidence revealing the potential mental and physical benefits of riding. Funded by Harley-Davidson, the study found that motorcycling increased metrics of focus and attention, and decreased relative levels of cortisol, a hormonal marker of stress. Researchers recorded participants’ brain activity and hormone levels before, during, and after motorcycling, driving a car, and resting. While riding a motorcycle, participants experienced increased sensory focus and resilience to distraction. Riding also produced an increase in adrenaline levels and heart rate, as well as a decrease in cortisol metrics – results often associated with light exercise and stress-reduction. “Stress levels, especially among young adults, continue to rise, and people are exploring pathways to better their mental and physical health. Until recently, the technology to rigorously measure the impact of activities like motorcycling on the brain didn’t exist,” said Dr. Don Vaughn, the neuroscientist who led the research team. “The brain is an amazingly complex organ and it’s fascinating to rigorously investigate the physical and mental effects riders report.” “While scientists have long-studied the relationship of brain and hormone responses to attention and stress, doing so in real-life conditions such as these is rare,” explained UCLA Professor and senior team member, Dr. Mark Cohen. “No lab experiment can duplicate the feelings that a motorcyclist would have on the open road.” Mag Man’s Conclusion: Shut-up & Ride… Have Nice Day on the Road!
RESULTS HIGHLIGHTS: 1 Riding a motorcycle decreased hormonal biomarkers of stress by 28% 2 On average, riding a motorcycle for 20 minutes increased participants’ heart rates by 11% and adrenaline levels by 27% — similar to light exercise 3 Sensory focus was enhanced while riding a motorcycle versus driving a car, an effect also observed in experienced meditators vs non-meditators 4 Changes in study participants’ brain activity while riding suggested an increase in alertness similar to drinking a cup of coffee.
FINNISH ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE DEBUTS WITH HUBLESS WHEEL F
innish motorcycle startup RMK has developed the E2 electric motorcycle and it has ne feature buyers are going to love; a hubless rear wheel. Feeding off three power cables, the design reduces rotational mass while delivering 67 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. The regenerative brake helps recharge the battery. It’s located on the left handlebar lever as there’s no need for a clutch since it has no gears. The right one activates a conventional twin-disc brake on the front wheel. It comes with a digital instrument cluster with built-in navigation.
According to Motorcyclist, the final price hasn’t been set but is targeted at 24,900 euros, which is around $28,000 US. Even though they are taking orders in Europe, the U.S. availability hasn’t been confirmed, but we will be watching for this one. 8 - Southern Biker Magazine

DAVID SHARPE REMEMBERED By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
D
avid Sharpe passed away and left a book of memories and better times with friends and family. I knew David for well over 10 years and I can honestly say he was a people person and true friend. His smile would take over a room when he entered. I will miss our sharing hunting and riding stories. I intended to complete this article by myself. But after reading several others post comments, I think some of those that tell David’s story better than I ever could. Scott Maddux: David and I worked together at Smoky Mountain Harley for eleven years and over that time he became a staple at the dealership. His smile was infectious and he was always positive and grinning. During our Christmas parties David always had a crowd in his office cutting up, so many people loved him and he had so many friends that would stop in just to say hello. David came up in the motorcycle industry and worked in it most of his life, he started in the wash bay and I think that is why he was always making it a point to pat those guys on the back and show his appreciation for their work. He is going to be missed, we will talk about him often around the dealership, and I am certain he will always be remembered at SMHD and in the East Tennessee motorcycle community. David Sharpe was certainly one of a kind. David McHale: We met David Oct 2002, a year after we moved to TN. He has been a good friend ever since. He has had a positive impact on my life. Kristin Gracy: David sold me my first Harley in 2005 and we’ve been good friends since then. He was a great person and always had such an infectious smile and genuine soul. Beth Paty: I know I will surely miss that huge smile and genuine hugs from David. He was such a great guy and friend! Till we meet again David. Scott Inman: Sometimes in life you meet people that leave a mark on your soul, that leave your life better than it was before, David Sharpe was one of those people. God Speed cupcake, until we meet again. 10 - Southern Biker Magazine
Bryan Jagger: We said goodbye (really a see you again one day) to a “One of a Kind”. I’m struggling to find the right words to say. That’s not normal for me usually. But the reason is because I have never met anyone like David Sharpe before joining the Smoky Mountain H-D team. He had a gift with people; an almost freakish gift. Everyone who met him loved him almost immediately. Not only did they love him, they craved to be around him. His customers wanted to deal with him, Period. They were intensely loyal in a world where loyalty is about dead. The dealership has received calls and messages from literally all over the US with condolences and disbelief. He was amazing; the best of the best. David died suddenly. We didn’t get to say goodbye the way we all should have had the chance to do, but this is life. Hug your loved ones. Call your family and friends if you can’t give them a hug. Love your work family, because after all, most of us spend more waking hours with our work family than with our blood family. Don’t take life for granted and be kind and patient with people all around you. You never know what they are going through and when you will lose the chance to be kind and give someone a hug or word of encouragement. I will respect David Sharpe’s memory with what I know he would want from me most. Love you Brother Sharpe. See you again one day! March 2019

Pinstriping Comeback
By Dave Knoderer, Letterfly.com
C
learly the finishing touch for any carefully thought out vehicular project is the subtle painted filigrees and thin stripes that commands the eye as the beholder begins to really look. Have you ever wondered where those fanciful designs originated? Vehicular décor began with the chariots of the affluent, thousands of years ago, with gold leaf scrolls and thin accent stripes that implied quality and would persuade appreciation from the viewer. The circus in the 1800’s had extensive hand carved and gilded scrolls on their wagons, again to impress the viewer and establish the investment made in the caliber of the show. This decorative art genre accompanied mankind and developed through the ages as quality carriage decoration and wagon striping became the benchmarks of carefully engineered and accurately constructed vehicles. Precise stripes could only flow over wooden joints that were tight and carefully crafted wrought iron components were complimented with accent designs. Great pride was attached to the decoration that was part of the process of these proud craftsmen. In a recently unearthed letter to a customer, responding to an attempt to order an undecorated Studebaker wagon, the refusal comes from the manufacturer, “If you want wagons without stripes, you don’t want a Studebaker”. Fire engines have perhaps the most famous reputation for elaborate decorations. Originally “fire companies” were independent, private affairs in competition with one another. The premise was simple. Elaborate decorations associated with a particular fire company implied that their fire fighting equipment was superior. Artisans with a background of floral specialties, dimensional and intricate geometric scrollwork, elaborate letter styles, and Celtic designs flourished during this era. The hey day of gold leaf scrollwork, and finessful pinstripes peaked prior to the fire companies becoming municipal affairs. The carriage stripes followed the manufacturing evolution into the horseless era and their accent stripes were included as a finishing touch on many early automobiles that completed for a share of the market. When car design exploded after World War II, so did the personal expression that boomers found in building from a plethora of car parts and decorating in the emerging style, what became known as hot rods. Iconic artists created ratfink monsters; hiding faces in fanciful pinline designs and the flame became the preferred artistic statement to suggest power, speed, testosterone and thrills.

Benefitting Messengers For Homeless Vets and Main Street Station’s Bicycles for Kids, the event still raised hundreds of dollars for both. Organizer Randy Tipton stated, “I just want to say thank you to each and every one of you who braved the weather yesterday to make the Freedom 100 a huge success. I really appreciate your support on this event and your help in giving to children and veterans at Christmas. Without you this wouldn’t be possible.” He and his volunteer staff work tirelessly for free as 100% of all proceeds go towards the charities. ilaH

Turning Coins into Rings of Art By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
go to many events and rallies throughout the year and see some interesting things under vendors’ tents from time to time. Very few may grab your attention and some you just downright have to have. Last year at the while attending the Thunder Mountain Rally, I walked under one such tent and was astounded by the craftsmanship Cory Whitson displayed. Cory had several things for sale at his booth, but the thing that captured my eye the most was shiny silver rings. Now many vendors sell rings, but Cory makes his, right in front of you. And he uses coins to do it. I watched as he transformed a Morgan silver dollar into a thick ring fit to be enjoyed by the wearer. His most common ring was the 1903 Morgan silver dollar ring. You see, it’s the year of Harley-Davidson’s birth. He used a couple different instruments to accomplish the coin to ring transformation. He began by notching a hole into the center of the coin. Then using a hand press with several different dies, a rounding ball and some masterful craftwork, he transforms each one into wearable jewelry that most anyone else does not have. Cory could make a ring out of just about any coin, but for me, the larger the coin the better. And those real, all-silver, Morgan coins look absolutely spectacular. He made a ring for me out of a quarter and it’s a real conversation piece. Cory travels the circuit of rallies and you are going to want to stop by his vender booth and watch him make one of these. Bring your own favorite coin and for a nominal fee, he can make it into a ring as well. And don’t forget to look at those Morgan rings, I promise; you are going to have to have one. You can contact Cory through his Facebook page if you want to find out when he will be close to you or an event you be attending. Tell him the Mag Man sent you.
