Upgrade your pet’s life. Boundary Plus® Technology means bigger freedom in smaller areas

• This exclusive technology delivers up to 30% more yard space allowing your dog (or cat) to safely play right up to the yard’s edge. It’s the perfect fit for unique or small lots and tight spaces.

Virtual endless boundary

• Prevents any “breakthrough” where pets run beyond the signal’s reach, leaving no room for escape.

Zero unintentional yard lock-outs

• Other systems can confuse pets if they “breakthrough” the boundary and try to reenter, emitting a correction and stopping them from coming home. Boundary Plus® containment ensures this can’t happen!

due to, being hurried, texting, talking or just plan not paying attention. DRIVE DEFENSIVELY this year. Be expecting that car to pull out or that car to swerve over into your lane or that jack-wagon to be texting and not looking close enough. Also, be expecting hazards in the road, look out for traffic situations and going around blind corners can lurk the non-obvious obstructions. Arrive home alive… that’s my wish every time you throw your leg across your motorcycle. We’ll also be out and about around the PCBeach area shooting pics and giving away t-shirts and other swag. Meet up with us and get some SBMag Road Crew attire for the season. You can see us at the Official Thunder Beach events and concerts, Buster’s Beer & Baits, SIK Cycles, Bricks & Barley Pizza, Hershey’s Ice Cream Parlor and lots more places. Until then, “Keep Your Knees In The Breeze!”©

78th DAYTONA BIKE WEEK

HAD MASSIVE ATTENDANCE By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he one thing you can say about the beginning of the riding season…It’s DAYTONA BEACH Baby! With a huge crowd of riders coming in for 10+ days of riding, sun, sea and wind therapy, motorcycle riders from around the world enjoyed everything Daytona Beach and the surrounding area provided for them. PERFECT weather awaited the riders for the entire Bike Week, and everyone enjoyed meeting up with friends and meeting new ones. From the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon on Main Street, to Indian of Daytona on Beach Street to Rossmeyer Harley-Davidson at Destination Daytona to the Iron Horse Saloon and Finn’s Beachside Pub, folks enjoyed everything there and everywhere in between. Top entertainment was everywhere you went. Jasmine Cain was a show stopper as was AC/DC Highway to Hell, Saliva, Saving Abel, KISS America, Hayfire, Miss Intent and many others. The SBMag Road Crew hit everything and covered everything possible. The AMA Supercross started the week off with Braaap!! Racing at Daytona International Speedway went on all week with the Daytona 200, the TT Race, Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross and more! Other racing in the area happened out at the New Smyrna Raceway with Billy Lane’s Sons of Speed Race with vintage motorcycles (article in April issue). Jay Allen was again at the Broken Spoke Saloon holding down his MC duties. Taking in some of our favorite dodrop-ins included Finn’s Beachside Pub, Racing’s North Turn, Bruno’s Pizzeria, Aunt Catfishes, Charlie Horse for crab legs and a few more. Full bellies were had by all! George Beidler and Dennis Maniatis at the Boogey Lights trailer rig were too busy to hang out as the bikes were lined up for some of those awesome lights. Our host hotel was the Oceanside Inn with a host of friends and bikers. Next up for Daytona Beach is the 27th Annual Biketoberfest. Make your reservations early and we’ll see you at the beach! INDIAN DOMINATES

DAYTONA TT By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

W

ith the largest TT crowd ever at Daytona International Speedway, Briar Bauman, the newest member of the Indian Wrecking Crew, continued Indian Motorcycles flat track domination. Defending champion and Indian rider intimidator, Jared Mees crashed twice in the semi-finals and then retired with a POS Rider Bike mechanical issue in the Main. 1 Briar Bauman Indian FTR750 Bauman raced his brother, Bronson (also 2 Henry Wiles Indian FTR750 3 Jake Johnson Yamaha MT-07 on an Indian) early on but eventually fell back. TT Legend Henry Wiles on 4 Jarod Vanderkooi H-D XG750R his Indian took up the second spot as 12 Sammy Halbert H-D XG750R 17 Jared Mees Indian FTR750 Yamaha rider Jake Johnson took his first podium in third. Bauman said, “To hop out there in the front, it’s all about trying to put in a gap in the beginning. I’ve been training hard this off-season. I tried to throw down as much as I could and get a little bit of a gap and maintain the rest of the race.” Jarod Vanderkooi aboard his Harley-Davidson XG750R registered a “Never Count Me Out Award.” After having to use a provisional start just to make the Main Event, Vanderkooi raced his way from the very back of the pack to an astounding fourth. We are looking for more great riding from this rider.

THE SUPER HOOLIGAN BEGINS By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he very first Super Hooligan national championship sanctioned by the AMA took off with a roar at the Daytona International Speedway. Handlebar to handlebar action, this new series has hit a homerun! Roland Sands has created a tremendous series for those striving for an adrenaline rush. The Progressive Insurance Presents the RSD Super Hooligan AMA National Championship Powered by Indian Motorcycle officially has begun. AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant stated, “The hooligan category of flat track racing is quickly gaining popularity. These events organized by Roland Sands Design provide a unique opportunity for riders to get in on the fun of motorcycle competition.” World renowned motorcycle designer Roland Sands, who also won the 1998 AMA 250GP National Championship put his talent and experience front and center to bring this series to life. Super Hooligan motorcycles are 750cc or larger street-bike flat track racers. Seven of the nine events in 2019 will offer an Amateur Hooligan Class, as well as the Super Hooligan. Main Event Podium finishers at the Daytona International Speedway from the two semi races were: 1st place-Joe Kopp

The Thin Blue Line Indian… Across America By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

D

id you know that each year more than 150 police officers are killed in the line of duty? If not, you’re not alone. People that need law enforcement at that moment are proud someone stood for them and paid the ultimate sacrifice. But it leaves a broken family and friends that take that burden personally. The “Thin Blue Line Across America” was a six-day crosscountry motorcycle ride that spanned over 2,500 miles benefitting Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), an organization striving to raise awareness and resources for members and families of law enforcement who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The six day ride began from San Diego California and ended in Daytona Beach, FL just in time for Daytona Bike Week. The event kicked off with a meet and greet at Indian Motorcycle Charlotte on February 23rd. Riders then made their way to California and prepared for an epic ride. A team of riders consisting of Lloyd Greer of Lloydz Motor Workz and Indian Motorcycle Charlotte, Tim Sutherland of Indian Motorcycle Charlotte and Coastal Indian Motorcycle of Myrtle Beach, ACM & CMA award-winning country musician Keifer Thompson of the band Thompson Square and Steve Lita of American Iron Magazine, rode four customized Indian motorcycles from California to Florida, stopping at select locations and memorials to pay tribute to fallen officers across the country. Each leg, the Blue Knights Law Enforcement motorcycle club along with other law enforcement riders and the general public, escorted the riders Mike, Tim, Ben, Brandon, Lloyd & Steve for each stop.

Following Daytona Bike Week, the Thin Blue Line custom Indian Chieftain was taken to Washington D.C. to be put on display at the National Law Enforcement Museum during National Police Week; May 12. It will then be put up for auction with all proceeds benefiting C.O.P.S. For more information or to donate to C.O.P.S. please visit concernsofpolicesurvivors.org. 16 - Southern Biker Magazine

arch Moto Madness is gaining momentum and growing at an astounding rate. It is officially titled the rally of the rider. These men and women come to this rally to ride: sun, rain, snow, wet, dirt, rocky, asphalt, muddy, grassy…whatever. These folks can ride…even on a hill climb! Dual sport riding is becoming more and more popular as the years continue, and March doesn’t kick-off their riding season; oh no no no! These folks ride year round no matter what the weather.

March Moto Madness the Mother Rally as it’s now called, is the original rally for beginning the MMM. Located in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, this rally has grown from 50 or so to about 800 as far as I could see. People from all over the country and a few from other countries came to ride the trails of Tennessee and compete in some of the MMM Field & Trail games. Different challenges await the rides at each different game; the obstacle course, the bike games, the trail rides, the hill climb. There were events for all types of riders, experienced, novice, beginners, etc. The main event hill climb drew nearly 300 onlookers to watch both men and women vying for #1 in three different classes. The huge campfire at night is a great way to relax and meet new friends and recount the day’s activities. MMM doesn’t just happen here in the heart of riding mecca, it takes place all over the world in many countries. MMM began in 2006 in the mountains of East Tennessee by some guys just wanting to get out in the spring as early as possible, pack up 18 - Southern Biker Magazine

the bikes and go riding and camping for a few days. It has now culminated into a 19 country, world-wide event. It also doesn’t just include metric motorcycles either. Folks are bringing their Harley-Davidson Scramblers to the events as well. Rooster Scooters was well represented at “The Roost” shop on site. About 10-12 H-D Scrambler riders came to enjoy the event alongside their counterparts with BMWs, Yamahas, Suzuki’s, Hondas, Kawasaki’s, Triumphs and others.

Rain or shine, these guys and gals ride! “We’ve primarily been dual sport oriented but the areas great diversity of roads has broadened our range of riders. Great twisty asphalt (Cherohala Skyway, the Dragon), groomed gravel (the Dirt Dragon) or gnarly single track (trail 81 or 82) offers much diversity for the whole range of Dual Sport / ADV Bike. Food has always been a big part of our rides thanks to Don Stover and his culinary prowess as well as a host of volunteers that help make sure everybody eats”, said MMM. Meals included at MMM are Breakfast Fri, Sat & Sun and Dinner Fri & Sat nights. Who could ask for more than hanging out with like minded friends, camping and motorcycle riding? Well, the rest of the world is now coming on board by jumps and bounds.

BMW Motorrad Berlin Plant Produces

Motorcycle #3,000,000 By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works). The company began in 1916 and quickly became known for its advance designed engines manufacturing aircraft engines. It continued making them through World War I, but after WWI, the treaty of Versailles banned Germany from manufacturing any aircraft at all. BMW’s engineering personnel were redirected toward making engines for other industrial uses. In 1921, Max Friz developed a 500cc flat-twin engine which small German motorcycle builders began buying. By having both cylinders mounted across the direction of travel, sticking out into the wind, the problem of even cylinder cooling that plagued other engine designs had been resolved. In 1923, BMW purchased one of those motorcycle builders. BMW and

Friz now had what it needed to build its own motorcycle in house and in 1923 the first-ever complete BMW vehicle was introduced; that’s right, BMW’s first vehicle ever produced was a motorcycle. The R32 had a 486cc flat-twin, put out 8.5HP and a top speed of around 60mph and the rest is history. In 1969, fifty years ago, the BMW Motorrad Company moved its motorcycle facility to Berlin. In May 2011, it produced the company’s 2,000,000th BMW motorcycle. Come forward to April 2019 and the BMW Berlin plant has now produced its 3,000,000th motorcycle and it’s the iconic S1000RR.
