Upgrade your pet’s life. Boundary Plus® Technology means bigger freedom in smaller areas
• This exclusive technology delivers up to 30% more yard space allowing your dog (or cat) to safely play right up to the yard’s edge. It’s the perfect fit for unique or small lots and tight spaces.
Virtual endless boundary
• Prevents any “breakthrough” where pets run beyond the signal’s reach, leaving no room for escape.
Zero unintentional yard lock-outs
• Other systems can confuse pets if they “breakthrough” the boundary and try to reenter, emitting a correction and stopping them from coming home. Boundary Plus® containment ensures this can’t happen!

WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hey Knee Breezers!
We’ve just completed covering the great Cherokee, Blue Ridge Run Rally, the Trail of Tears Memorial Motorcycle Ride, the Boogie Too, the Redneck Rumble and the 79th Sturgis Rally. This October brings in the Crown Jewels of the year ending Rallies; Daytona Beach’s Biketoberfest, Thunder Beach in Panama City Beach, FL and the Lone Star Rally in Galveston, TX. Don’t forget your sunscreen and your riding gear as we’ll be ending this year’s rally schedule on high note. It’s a good thing we have some awesome SBMag Road Crew members to help us along the way. THEY ARE OUR SUPERSTARS! The fall Thunder Beach Rally is also the location of the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show we are proud to host. Shine up those motorcycles and get ready to win some custom laser engraved surfboard trophies and a couple Championship Belts for the Editor’s Choice and the People’s Champion! We’ll also be out and about cover events and visiting some of our favorite spots so come see us and let’s get your photo in the magazine.

This time of year signals the time for many toy rides to begin. Make sure you help when you can and ride in to support these toy rides. Children all over are depending on these rides to receive, in some cases, even one toy. We look forward to this time of year coming. We hope to see you all out and about at one or more of these events. We love meeting up with old friends and making new ones. The leaves have begun changing into their fall colors and soon will be leaving the tree, winding up on the road. Take extra precautions on those roads and stay up on two wheels. Take along extra clothing too in case of weather and temperature changes so your ride continues to be that awesome one you are looking for.
The holidays are just around the corner and they will be upon us in no time. Make this year count; be thankful for what we have, enjoy life, enjoy each other’s company, spend time with family and friends and make each day a blessing. Remember, you just never know who is going through a desperate moment and that smile or kind word you say could brighten their day. “Keep Your Knees In The Breeze” ©

2020 in the form of new motorcycles and new options on some. The biggest news of course is the new Livewire Electric Motorcycle we’ve already written about several times but more features including tech features are coming for that model and others. But let’s get to new H-D line-up.
THE NE
Milwaukee came out with big news for
2020
HARLEY-DAVIDSON MODELS
The new 2020 Softail Low Rider S will come with some extra muscle. This machine will come with a Milwaukee-Eight 114 that churns out 119 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. The suspension will be beefed up as well with suspension components (including a 43mm USD fork). Tripledisc brakes with standard ABS will allow that stop on a dime while giving change and staying in control feel you want. The two color options are Vivid Black and Barracuda Silver with pricing starting around $17,999. The new 2020 Road Glide Limited is replacing the Road Glide Ultra model. It’s powered by the Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114, and features premium suspension, Reflex linked Brembo brakes with ABS, H-D Connect and dual Daymaker LED headlamps, a Boom! Box GTS infotainment system with color touch screen. Lots of extra premium luxury-touring features are included like painted pin striping, a gloss-finish inner fairing, heated grips, Slicer II Contrast Bright wheels and new tank, front and rear fender medallions. New triple split stream vents on its fairing will improve airflow and reduce buffeting. Silver Slicer II cast wheels finished in Gloss Black; fuel tank, front and rear fender medallions with a Gloss Black fill surrounded by a Charcoal border; Gloss Black powdercoated powertrain, covers and exhaust; black Tour-Pak luggage carrier hinges, latches and rack, console, footboards, handlebar, gauge trim rings, hand control levers, mirrors and foot controls; black LED Daymaker headlamp, trim ring and LED fog lamps (Ultra Limited only); and black fork lowers, fork covers, engine guard and saddlebag guards. Pricing for the 2020 Road Glide Limited starts at $28,299.
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy The new H-D Connect feature with your new 2020 H-D is a subscription-based cellular service that allows riders to connect with their motorcycle using their smartphone and the HarleyDavidson app. H-D Connect provides key vehicle information (e.g., battery voltage, fuel level, available range, riding statistics and more) as well as remote security monitoring, including tamper alerts and stolen vehicle assistance. H-D Connect is a standard feature on 2020 Touring models (except Road King/S and Electra Glide Standard models), Tri Glide Ultra, CVO models and LiveWire, and it includes free service for one year.
The new 2020 Heritage Classic powered with the Milwaukee-Eight 107 V-twin has opted to add some much wanted chrome; chrome air cleaner and covers; chrome steel laced wheels; chrome headlamp bucket and auxiliary light buckets, bright fork legs and chrome fork covers and nacelle; chrome rear fender struts and side covers; a chrome console; a polished stainless steel handlebar with a chrome riser and top clamp; and a full clear windscreen with chrome support hardware. This touring-ready Softail features lockable hard saddlebags, a detachable windscreen, a two-piece skirted seat and pillion with black studs, and standard cruise control and ABS. The Heritage Classic 114 model powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine will retain the model’s original, blacked-out look. Color options include: Vivid Black, Billiard Burgundy, two-tone Silver Pine/Spruce and Billiard Red/Vivid Black. Pricing starts at $18,999.

ow ten years old, Aiden Martin continues his quest for the largest fanbase for a child in need while he continues his fight for a happy, long term life. His struggles are daily, but his smiles are 24/7. If his fight doesn’t get you on board, his smile certainly will. At two years old, Aiden drowned in a swimming pool; His life gone even as help arrived and CPR began… or so it seemed. God had other ideas for this family on this earth. Twenty minutes of CPR and a small pulse was found. He was rushed to the hospital where he stayed for months. Doctors prepared Ashley for news he would never have any quality of life and be in a vegetative state his entire life. God has always been the last word as Ashley continued to pray for her son. She began the fight with Aiden on her knees in prayer… and shortly afterwards, the Triple R group joined her in not only prayer, but helping by doing this benefit.
Fight Like Aiden VI began at Knoxville Harley-Davidson and ended at Ridge Runners Bar & Grill. Hundreds came to support this cause as did many area businesses. The Live Auction was a hoot where folks brought stuff and donated to raise money. I was going for the Texas Long Horns to go on my barn, but the price quickly went higher than my wife would allow. There was a 50/50 drawing plus lots of food for the motorcycle ride participants. The group know as Triple R along with organizer Richard Ford continue to raise funds annually for Aiden and his mother Ashley to help with expenses associated
with Aiden. A grand total of $26,350.64 was raised.
Ashley stated, “First and foremost I want to thank each and everyone who helped make this ride possible for Aiden. I have cried and cried at the amount of love and support everyone shows for Aiden. He is truly blessed to have so many amazing people in his life to cheer him on and help lift him up when we aren’t able to. I know I say this all the time but I mean it from the bottom of my heart, Aiden would not be as far as he is without the help of all (you) amazing people! No way could we ever afford to give him the treatments and transplants that he needs! Thank you all so much for believing in (Aiden)… Richard and Kim Ford, a ‘Big Thank You’, I could never thank you enough. I’m so DOUBLE thankful CONCERT to September 7TH know an amazing bunch of softhearted tough bikers! THANK YOU 8PM GUNS & ROSES TRIBUTE – NIGHTTRAIN for all you have done and being there to lift usBONEZ up during the bad 6PM HILLBILLY – Opening Act and celebrate with us during the good. tlanta Braves Hall of Famer Terry Pendleton held his 2nd Annual Charity Ride that benefits the 300 Club of Atlanta. Southern Devil Harley-Davidson was the beginning of the event where some attendees enjoyed watching the Cobb County Police Motorcycle Officers doing some pretty tight motorcycle drills. There were VIP tickets available for the Braves Alumni luncheon that was provided by Carrabba’s Italian Grill. Folks also got a chance for some nifty photo ops with Terry and a few other former Atlanta Braves players; Otis Nixon, Eddie Perez and Brian Jordan. Over 300 motorcycles rode in the escorted ride and many more folks came to show support for the event. The scenic ride began at Southern Devil H-D and ended at downtown Clarkesville at the Music by the Tracks Event for a concert by Babes Bayou and vendors were waiting for the riders. The 300 club helps first responders and their families that are killed or injured in the line of duty.

CHEROKEE The Blue Ridge Run 3 Draws Thousands By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
T
opping its second annual rally was going to be a job, but it appears that the Cherokee Blue Ridge Run 3 set all kinds of new records. Touted as the Mecca of Motorcycle Riding, the Cherokee, NC event drew riders from as far away as Australia. Vendors and entertainers took care of some 3,000 plus attendees who came to ride, buy and enjoy everything the event offered. The newest addition was the building of a permanent dirt track for racing. Going from 84 racers in 2018, this year’s riders totaled over 140 as the money for winning the pro series caught ears as did the amateur and Hooligan Races. Event Director Mark Cresswell worked hard a long hours to make sure this new part of the event took place on time. He also brought in some top acts for the each day and nights entertainment; Tom Keifer from Cinderella, Strutter Kiss Tribute Band, Jasmine Cain, Michael Allman, Heart Breaker, Stone Senate and more! Harrah’s also put on a tremendous concert and motorcycle ride with the 3-Doors Down Band. Close friend Jay Allen of One Feather Racing & NEW Land Speed Record Holder was our Master of Ceremonies and he kept everyone informed of the daily shows and pumped up the audience during the entire day; The American Motor Drome,
the high flying motorcycle act Circus UNA and motorcycle stunt shows by BMW stunt rider Chris “Teach” McNeil and Adam Holbrook along with the Fearless Flores Thrill Show. Gloria Struck was in person doing a book signing and sat down with Kristin and I to tell a few tales from her past. What an awesome lady. The bike shows drew top builders and bikes to the event. This year Bob Kay announced the AMD National Qualifier crowned duel champions; Brian Buttera & Paul Shadley. Each winner receives $2,000 in winnings...

> continued from page 20 and another $8,000 towards taking their bikes to Germany for the AMD world final. The Southern Biker Magazine’s Ladies Ridein Bike Show was a huge hit. Winners each received custom laser engraved cedar trophies to adorn their trophy rooms. This year’s show had a truly magnificent ending. For the first time in the history of SBMag putting on men’s or women’s shows, one motorcycle owner garnered not only four trophies, but the #1 trophies for all four; Harley-Davidson Cruiser, Best Custom Paint, People’s Choice & Editor’s Choice. That record achievement went to Kelly Willett. The Perewitz Paint show had many outstanding entrants with Dave Perewitz awarding the winners with his custom painted trophies. The Cycle Source Ride-in Bike Show had many outstanding entries and top trophy winners. Their Grease & Gears Show featured live informative building techniques from all the builders plus all of the winners from all the shows were announced on their stage streaming live! The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians wanted a top rated motorcycle rally and they are not disappointed at what this rally has become and the direction it is heading. This family-friendly event is growing each year and looks to be one of the top draws soon. It’s a motorcycle and music festival where we are encouraging the next generation of enthusiasts to discover today’s great sport of motorcycling”, said Mr. Cresswell. Cherokee, The Blue Ridge Run is a top tun rally with lots of riding and lots to do. Don’t miss next year’s event. This one is that bucket list rally!

WORLD S FASTEST
MONK By Jim Leggett Photos by Vann McCoy

ickstands down in Mount Airy, NC, we lead into our latest riding adventures in North Carolina with a poem, never more poignant, never timelier… Hometown hero Andy Griffith might concur. What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. …A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. - Leisure, by Wm. Henry Davies (1871-1940) Bikes parked by a rusting Wally’s Service Station, we ditch helmets and jackets, stepping back in time – Mayberry RFD 1960’s – swapping motorcycles for cop cars! Today we’re in a cop car, instead of being chased. A spacious 1961 Ford Galaxy Mayberry Sheriff gold starred squad car as featured in The Andy Griffith Show (courtesy of Squad Car Tours at Wally’s Service Station). “Ford supplied the show a new patrol car every season” says our driver. “Every one painted flat black and white, so’s not to reflect cameras and arc lights.”
Siren wailing, bubblegum-style red light flashing, we grind to a halt adjacent The Snappy Lunch – “Mt. Airy’s Oldest Continuous Eating Establishment At The Same Location Since 1923!” – boasts the menu cover, as featured in an early TV episode, “Andy the Matchmaker” where Sheriff Andy invites Deputy Barney “down to The Snappy Lunch to get bite to eat.” Oprah visited too, decades later. Mount Airy’s appealing historic district mimics the fictitious “sleepy little town of Mayberry”, enjoyed my millions during the hit CBS -TV weekly series (1960-1968). Story lines focused on family values, morality, kindness and tolerance played out in a “sort of a small Eden” scripts of which whose inspired a ten-week college course. “We just wanted to entertain. But we were careful” Griffith told reported Tim Funk during a 1993 interview. “We were very careful with Opie. When we did Opie stories, we did father and son stories. Now, Opie wasn’t really raised by a single parent because he had Aunt Bee there…I tell you, the show had good morals only because the show was based on love. If you have to say, ‘What was the show about?’ it was about love.” 24 - Southern Biker Magazine
Yep, tales of Mayberry’s bungling “top gun” deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts) Sherriff Taylor and young Opie Taylor (Ron Howard) a’ going’ fishing’. Aunt Bee Taylor (Frances Bavier) and Thelma Lou (Betty Lynn) – circumspect, yet comic characters, living simpler times we wish we could have shared… when “Tweet” meant “An imitation of the sound made by a small bird.” Mayberry’s cop car cruises past Floyd’s City Barbershop, historic Earle Theater, home of the Old Time Music Heritage Hall, on to Andy’s boyhood home-place on a quiet side street. Tastefully renovated, it’s available for B&B stays, space for motorcycles by the garden fence. Next, Andy Griffith Museum; a life-size bronze statue depicts Andy and Opie headed for the old fishing hole. A vast collection of memorabilia gifted by Griffith and cast members awaits inside; Sherriff Andy’s desk, stick type telephone, police radio, jail cell keys, video show excerpts and the like, fun to explore. Had hoped to see Barney’s Harley-Davidson, allegedly featured in one episode. On to The Museum of Regional History, a multistory wonderland of Colonial era wagons, local moonshine stills, and town celebs Donna Fargo, Chang and Eng Bunker – the original Siamese Twins – who lived and died here. A vintage fire truck exhibit memorializes the town’s tragic school fire, a 1950’s horror, prompting changes to national school safety regulations.

> continued from page 24 THE WORLD’S FASTEST MONK In truth we rode in town seeking out a suddenly sought-out distillery, Mayberry Spirits, founded and run by a 140 MPH motorcyclist – and get this – former monk, Vann McCoy! “You can’t print this but…” says he, relating lively adventures on motorcycles, airplanes and making whiskey – confessing he made moonshine growing up in Mount Airy. “At 13 I made my first moonshine using my mother’s pressure cooker!” he laughs, “Got some copper tubing, corn meal and sugar with a little spoonful of bread yeast, and went to work. Luckily, I scorched it, it smelled bad, tasted terrible, probably saving teenager me from being an early alcoholic!” “Then, The Big G (as he calls God) called me. I quit high school at 16, then headed to Georgia Tech to study astrophysics. Tiring of the stars, I set my sights on the heavens. I joined a contemplative
Rheingau wines, by candlelight, deep within ancient cobwebdraped gothic wine cellars. Whiskeys were shared later as Connery tells me rode a Norton during his salad days.” monastery then spent the next 25 years as monk – Gregorian chants, silent scriptoriums, rigid monastic life – Wisconsin, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany’s romantic 12th century Kloster Eberbach Abby in Germany. I only visited Eberbach – was not a monk there.” Berobed acquaintance Sean Connery was filming The Name of the Rose in the abbey (1985/6) "while we sipped superb
“So, when I moved back to Mayberry to care for my elderly mother, I brought back to my hometown a little knowledge of distilling that expanded on my teenage moonshining.” Hoisting three jars of dark Mayberry Premium Whiskey a toast; “I like to think that going from monk to moonshine, it’s all about Lifting the Spirit! Just like riding…" I tried coaxing McCoy to don leathers, come riding miles of bike-friendly scenic byways of Surry County. “Next time, I promise…”

THE CROSS COUNTRY
CHASE THE LEGEND STATUS OF A LIFETIME By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
A
cross-country challenge of a lifetime was set for rider vs machine vs the road, as riders came together on their motorcycles that were manufactured between 1930 -1948, for one heck of a ride. 69 riders arrived in Sault Ste. Marie, MI to begin The Cross Country Chase that would end in Key West. Motorcycle Cannonball and Legends Motorcycle Museum presented this ride to see who’s who of the Antique Motorcycle World. The Chase was a test of Endurance, Speed, Navigation, and Knowledge. ENDURANCE: Riders and Machines traveled an average of 250-350 miles per day over an 8-day period. Riders and Machines had to endure fatigue, mental exhaustion, cold, heat, elevations, and all the ferocious elements of Mother Nature. Riders were on their own with no support crews of any kind. Riders had to pack light with everything they might need; tools, parts, and luggage. SPEED: Riders and Machines had to complete stages in timed fashion, which required maintaining certain speeds, planned stops, and managing time to check in to the final daily checkpoint at the required time. NAVIGATION: Riders had to navigate the 8-day (Sept. 6-15), 2,500+ mile route without going off course or getting lost. The Chase provided riders with a Navigation Map daily that gave them turn-by-turn instructions based on mileage. KNOWLEDGE: Riders were given a 100-question test that covered American Motorcycling history and counted towards the rider’s final score. MOTORCYCLE QUALIFICATIONS: Manuf. 1930-1948 w/ motorcycle were handicapped based on: • Age: The older the motorcycle, the higher it will be handicapped. • Engine Displacement: Motorcycles with smaller displacement engines will be handicapped higher than motorcycles with higher displacement. • Average Speed: Part of the handicap system is based on avg. cruising speed. (Motorcycles must have original engine cases, original transmission cases and period correct carburetors) “Cross Country Chase riders (were) sent out each morning by classes. Class I (500cc or less) goes first because they are the smallest engine displacement, then Class II (500cc-1100cc) and Class III (1101cc or more) is last, so the bikes are scattered out across the route all day… We felt ourselves lucky to find them in this big of a pack while traveling through Tennessee. Exciting stuff!” said the Chase staff. After the 2,368-mile route, riders came to the end of the Chase in Key West after stopping at the famous Southernmost Point Buoy for photo ops before the checkered flag waved them across the finish line at Mallory Square. Out of the 69 riders who began the chase, only 35 riders arrived in Key West, who rode every mile of every stage of the 8 state route. And the winners came in with an emotional thrill of victory; Todd Cameron, aboard his 493cc, 1930 BSA Sloper walked away with the Class I championship, a custom bronze Legend award, number plates for the next Cross Country Chase race, and a whopping $7,500.00 in cash. Jim Gilfoyle came in first place in Class II on his 1938 Harley-Davidson EL and Jerry Weiland, took first place for Class III on his 1941 Harley-Davidson FL. Cris Sommer Simmons, who has competed in four of the Motorcycle Cannonball antique races, received a custom wood carving for being the top female competitor in the Cross Country Chase. The next chase will take place in 2021 so if you are interested in competing with the top antique riders, get signed up and prepare your ride… training starts today. www.themotorcyclechase.com
