ridertorider
words from the publisher
Hello Readers & Riders,
As motorcycle riding season kicks into full gear, riders need to kick up their awareness about their surroundings. It can get tiring to constantly be searching for the next obstacle that is going to dart out in front of you and cause you to possibly lay your bike down. I just watched a YouTube video (Motorcycle vs Dog) of a group of motorcycle riders out on a pleasurable ride with GoPro cameras on their helmets. All of a sudden a dog darted across a rider's path causing him to go down hard.
Another rider behind him downs his bike in an attempt to avoid colliding with the downed rider as he is sliding across the pavement.Thank goodness they had on helmets and full leathers and were somewhat protected, at least form road rash, which is NO FUN as it heals! As the second rider went down, he was headed straight for a semi traaveling toward him in the opposite lane and in a ninja-like move; he leaped out of the way and avoided the semi as it was locking up its brakes. Situations like this happen often and we need to be trained to manage a motorcycle accident scene. What would you do if one of your riding buddies had an accident? Would you know what to do until the ambulance arrived? What if the ambulance is a long way away, like the Dragon? How would you respond? My husband and I encountered this very situation five years ago when a car pulled out in front of us causing us to go down. I was unconscious for about two hours and had a partially collapsed lung and six fractured ribs and no memory of what happened. My husband panicked and the officer on the scene was not the most compassionate person as he demanded driver licenses and insurance cards while my husband was focused on my care. I say all this to encourage you to consider taking a first aid class, accident scene management classes, etc, soo you can handle a worst case scenario armed with knowledge. Hopefully you will never find yourself in a situation like that, but if you do your friends and family will be happy you did.

Boogey Lights... Light Up the Nite By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
E
very motorcycle my wife and I have owned has been lit up by Scootershine, the go-to place for your LED lights and accessories. They even lit up my custom golf cart that I took to motorcycle events around the south. They only sell Boogey Lights® that are now manufactured in Florence, Kentucky. George Beidler, owner of Scootershine in Jacksonville, Florida, took it upon himself to tell me to get my newly custom painted motorcycle to him; that is was time for me to “Light Up the Nite”. After several attempts to get my 2004 Harley Ultra to him, we finally hooked up at the 75th Annual Bike Week in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Boogey Lights® trailer was in its usual spot at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson and I pulled up on my bike and was directed to exit the bike and come back in two to three hours. “But I didn’t tell you what I wanted”, I said. George replied, “I got that handled, now vamoose.” George himself along with Dennis Maniatis, owner of Regal Thunder, Inc. (BoogeyLights dealer) and his daughter Melissa and Jake Maentz went to town on my ride. So Smokin’ Joe Ball and I walked around the entire venue of vendors and met some old friends and many new ones. Upon my return, George brought me to my bike and said, “OK, here’s how it works. I’ll tell your wife too, so she can retrain you again later”, with a chuckle. He pushed a button on the remote control and BAM, my bike was lit up like the Fourth of July. I let a yell, “WOOOOOOOOOO”, as Rick Flair says. Then before I could ride off, George let me know, “You don’t have to use the remote. Download our app and your cell phone can Light Up the Nite for you. Yeah, it’s cool letting everyone watch me remote light my motorcycle from my cell phone from the patio during a bike night. Their Lifetime Guarantee is no joke either. No other dealer I know offers that. If you are looking to get you motorcycle, golf cart, ATV, RTV, boat, camper, vehicle or

whatever you want to light up, contact George Beidler...he’s the Man! Look George up on-line at www.scootershine.com where he sells more than just LED lights or on Facebook at Scooter Shine. Boogey Lights history Since 1989 Boogey Lights® has been lighting motorcycles - Harley Davidson®, GoldWing®, Yamaha®, Suzuki®, Kawasaki® and many others including cruisers and custom choppers. The manufacturing process for Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) significantly improved (during the late 90’s and early 2000s) which for the first time made it possible (and affordable) for small LED lights to be placed on big VTwin engines. The other advantage to LEDs was the relatively low power consumption. By 2006 all of their lighting products were based on LEDs. During the mid-2000’s LED technology significantly improved in terms of cost, size and brightness. Also the options for remote control units multiplied. Now you can purchase a wireless remote control with all sorts of fancy options including your iOS® or Android® smartphone. Today our professional installers can install your lights at some of the biggest motorcycle rallies in the country (e.g. Biketoberfest, Bike Week, Sturgis, etc) while you wait. And of course, there are Boogey Lights® dealers around the country who install our products in their shop year round. Even with the increased competition, they’ve remained the accent lighting market leader by offering the best and brightest LED lighting products backed by our nohassle original owner LED lifetime warranty and outstanding customer service. Boogey Lights® is committed to providing a superior quality product coupled with best-in-class customer service and a kick-ass warranty. Boogey Lights® are DESIGNED, ASSEMBLED and SUPPORTED by Americans in our facility in Florence, KY. At Boogey Lights® we’re all about liberty and The American Way. We believe in God, guns and country. We love America.

Honda Unveils CB1100 Concept
Coming to the USA Soon??? By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
onda surprisingly unveiled a new “Concept CB Type II” at the Osaka Motorcycle Show recently and oh what attention it drew. Looking fit and ready for the production line, the new CB1100 Concept is putting its crosshairs directly at the BMW RnineT and Triumph’s new Thruxton R.
An aggressive move by Honda by building this motorcycle concept (and also others that the market is craving) leads most to believe Honda is letting the consumer know it is listening and willing to do what it takes to move in the direction of the rider’s wants and needs. This cafe racer “Type II” concept is powered by an 1140cc air-cooled inline four (at that time, the first air-cooled bike from Honda in two decades) that offers up 88 hp and a riding experience not many can match. Seen with Öhlins shocks, gold
anodized forks and Brembo brakes, Honda is sparing no expense to make sure this CB is ready for competition right out of the gate. Couple all that with 17-inch cast alloy wheels and retropatterned Pirelli rubber, reminiscent of the Pirelli Phantoms of the 80s puts this Honda at the top of several riders list. Now add in the classic looking four-into-two exhaust, which is made from titanium and LED lighting the front and rear. That adds a some nice modern day features to this machine.
are reporting track testing for this “Concept CB Type II” has already taken place which leads most to believe production is soon to follow. I hope so, this model looks like a beast and could chew up the competition with ease.
All signs from Honda are that even more minor tweaks are on the way, but sources
Expect New Models With DCT Honda Promotes Technology With New Web Site
Honda recently launched a brand new web site dedicated to the promotion of its unique Dual Clutch Transmission for motorcycles (DCT). Honda already employs a DCT transmission in several production models, including the new Africa Twin. Honda has been developing, and refining, DCT for some time, and MD has already tested the second generation Honda DCT, which we found impressive in the 2014 CTX700. A Honda engineer was recently quoted as saying DCT is headed for use in sport bikes, and that production "DCT is even more efficient, and faster, than the seamless transmission used by the factory Repsol Honda MotoGP bikes." Among other models, you can expect a new Honda Gold Wing with DCT in production before too long.

hat do you call three days of riding and summer fun at five different locations in one fun Florida beach town? You call it a good time! Then, add into the mix shopping in specialty vendor villages; day rides along the coast; a bike wash and fashion show by the Men of Harley; fun daytime meet-ups and themed evening dinners with live entertainment; workshops and seminars; biker games and a trophied bike competition; a champagne brunch with female keynote speaker; and luxurious accommodations on the beach. Well, you call that the Sand & Sass Ladies Rally, taking place this summer (August 18-20, 2016) in Panama City Beach, Florida.
Fun in the sun, for sure! The Rally takes place predominantly at Harley-Davidson of Panama City Beach and Spinnaker Beach Club, with activities also happening at Club La Vela, Ms. Newby’s and Runaway Bay. On Thursday, April 18 rally goers will check into their accommodations at Palazzo Resort situated on the west end of Panama City Beach’s white sandy beaches and crystal clear Gulf waters, within two miles of Pier Park. Palazzo offers an array of Gulf front amenities including an elevated tropical pool and spa, fitness facility, spacious bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryer, and private balconies.
“A ladies rally is something we’ve wanted to do since opening our doors three years ago,” says Marta Rose, Director of Marketing and Events at Harley-Davidson of Panama City Beach, which opened in April 2013-nine days before the Thunder Beach Spring Rally that year. “We’ve had our eye on female riders for a while, creating events to engage them, accommodate them and grow that segment of bikers. Panama City Beach is a really fun place to come on vacation in the summer time, and such a biker-friendly town, so it’s a natural fit to put on a ladies rally here.”
Women can be particular about the type of vendors they want to visit. The vendor villages at Harley-Davidson and Spinnaker Beach Club will contain high-end and unique vendors. “We want to showcase fun and different, not the same things people have seen,” says Rose. Vendors will include health and nutrition items, hair accessories and head wraps, unique jewelry, good leathers and chaps, cowboy and riding boots, designer apparel, patches and a leather sewer, and conventional rally vendors selling bike parts and accessories. At least one masseuse will be on hand!
12 - Southern Biker Magazine
The kickoff party starts at Harley-Davidson’s Bike Night on Thursday evening and progresses to an after-hours party at Spinnaker. On Friday, five preliminary bike competitions leading up to the finale include Best American Bike, Best Metric, Best Chopper, Best Trike and Best Antique. Class winners will compete Saturday afternoon at Harley-Davidson. Earlier on Saturday rally goers can take a six-hour excursion, the Forgotten Coast Ride (85 miles each way), including stops at Toucans in Mexico Beach, Apalachicola and St. George Island. What sets Sand & Sass apart from other rallies is the interactive activities. “We’ve got fun things lined up from morning until night every day,” says Rose. “The ladies can take part in every single activity, just several, or simply do their own thing.” To book your condo call ResortQuest at 800380-4808 and identify you’re with the Sand & Sass Ladies Rally; reference Customer Code F9007. I've Got Good News Y
ou may have heard discussions on "laying down your bike" which can sound pretty daunting. First of all, it's just not something that you get out there and practice. Second of all, most people who have ever done it have the scars to prove it. The good news is technology and product have advanced. Years ago because of poor braking and tire quality sometimes a greater accident could be avoided by laying down the motorcycle but the world has changed.
Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.
Now most experts will tell you that with the advancement of anti-lock brakes, tires that have so much better traction and motorcycle maneuverability, you have a much better chance of avoiding an accident by keeping your motorcycle upright and under control.
safe parking lot practice some fast stops. Make sure that your tires have good tread, correct air pressure and are good quality. They can make all the difference in the world on your over-all ride and for handling and stoppage ability. They are one item you just don't want to skimp on - for the amount of money spent the difference is well worth it. It's also important to make sure brake cables are in good condition along with brake pads and the assembly.
What you can do for accident prevention is to practice swerving at low and high speeds and in a
One of the reasons I wrote this article is because we had just made a new friend by the name of William. He was enjoying the beautiful weather we

had this winter and was out riding on New Year's Day. He had mentioned previously to our son-in-law that he needed to have his brakes checked. He is still in rehab because of the accident he had that day and has been in and out of ICU several times since because of complications. There was a malfunction of his brakes causing them to grab and lock up, throwing him over his bike. Yes, he was wearing a helmet but still suffered serious injuries. I am not a person who focuses a lot on the dangers of riding because I know they are over-exaggerated by a lot of people but if this article can help prevent one accident, it's worth sounding an alarm. I'm asking for your prayers for William's total recovery.

Harley-Davidson New Roadster Revealed By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
arley-Davidson is still unveiling new motorcycles with different styles and new lines to appeal to the riders of today. Now we get a look at their new Roadster and it is by far the best looking design to come out of the Sportster line. Not only did Harley go retro with a classic racing style look but they brought new pieces together to make it a great ride. The first obvious thing you notice are the chopped fenders of yester year when drag racers cut everything down to make it lighter and faster. The new 19-inch front and 18-inch rear Offset-Split 5-Spoke cast aluminum wheels are light weight and give you a better feel of the road making an improvement on the handling. Adding to that is the new beefed-up suspension. On the front is a noticeable triple clamp gripping together the 43mm inverted single-cartridge forks with tri-rate springs. The rear got twin gascharged emulsion coil-over shocks and tri-rate springs with adjustable pre-load. But let’s not stop there. How about adding massive stopping power with dual 11.8-inch floating rotors on the front wheel and additional ABS. Now that is adding handling and performance to an already iconic ride. But they didn’t just stop at those. They also added new steering geometry for a responsive ride, new two-up seat with ribbed detail, new mid-mount foot peg controls, new slammed low rise handlebars, new dualfunction clock, new classic drag tank graphics and few more nice additions like the analog tach with digital speedo and those awesome looking retro dual exhaust pipes.
Well, I believe they have done just that. “We wanted to give the Roadster some DNA from the high-performance KHR models of the mid-50s, and later Sportsters tuned for the drag strip,” said Richards. “Those bikes had fenders cut to the struts, the small fuel tank, and were stripped to their bare essentials to achieve a singular performance purpose.” The new Roadster is offered in four color choices: Vivid Black with a charcoal denim pinstripe, Black Denim with a red pinstripe, Velocity Red Sunglo with a red pinstripe and two-tone Billet Silver/Vivid Black with a burgundy pinstripe. Get your deposit on one today, I don’t believe they’ll stay on that showroom floor for long and you wouldn’t want to see ride off down the road… without you.
“Since its introduction in 1957, the Harley-Davidson Sportster has proved capable of constant reinvention, and the Roadster writes a new chapter in that story,” said Harley-Davidson Director of Styling Brad Richards. “We’ve watched our customers take the Sportster in so many different directions… the intent was to build a rider’s motorcycle, a Sportster that’s lean and powerful and connects the rider to the road.”

Motorcycle Dealer Giving Back to the Community I
n a world that seems to get bigger every day, the values of hometown communities seem to be slowly fading away, but not at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson in Maryville, TN. The values of community are never more present than every May when the Black Dragon Breakdown rolls around, marking the 4th year. What on the surface may appear to be a simple vintage and custom motorcycle show is actually becoming an event pillar in the area. Each year, Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson donates three motorcycles to three local high schools. The schools then have an allotted budget to customize and build the bike however they choose to do so. After months of work, the students get to unveil their bikes at The Black Dragon Breakdown in front of community members and a winner is chosen. The competition and the event not only fuels local high school competition, but it pushes students to be creative about their projects. It drives them to be unique and clever and to work as a team under a leader. These are skills that will transfer over to the workplace once they become contributing members of the community; all starting with a motorcycle. The Breakdown also welcomes locals to show off their projects. Tons of custom and vintage bikes fill The Shed and bring a sense of wonder to the local community and the tourist attendees. These labors of love are judged and winners are crowned and awarded custom trophies designed by Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson workers who prepared them specifically for the occasion.
In addition to all this art, the day includes local vendors and craftsmen and a host of biker games. These include slow drags, barrel racing, and many others. It gives riders a chance to participate in the event and any way Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson can encourage people to get on their bike and ride is well worth it; even for games. The evening ends with live music. Music has always been used as a way to bring people together, so it makes sense that the event will conclude with a concert. Past performers have included Drivin’ N Cryin’ and Shooter Jennings. This year welcomes 1990’s underground rock

sensations The Bottle Rockets with local legends Mic Harrison & The High Score. After a day full of bikes, fellowship, and competition, music will bring the event to a close and end the evening in spectacular fashion. The 2016 Black Dragon Breakdown takes place on Saturday, May 14th at Smoky Mountain HarleyDavidson. Please visit smh-d.com for more details.

AMA Monster Energy Supercross, Indy Style I
by Gavin Smith, Youth Motocross Writer
went to a AMA Monster Energy Supercross dirt bike event in Indianapolis, Indiana. The race was held at Lucas Oil Stadium. This was my first major Supercross to cover for Southern Biker Magazine. My mom, dad, my brother Jackson, and sister Stella went with me because we all really like dirt bikes. When we first got there we went to the outside pit party. It was crowded. I got to sit on one of Justin Barcia’s dirt bikes. At the pit party there were lots of Kawasaki bikes on display and I got to sit on a Kawasaki 110 (maybe my next bike). There was so much stuff to see including a Monster Energy dragster. You could get autographs at the pit party from all the racers. Before we went inside Lucus Oil Stadium, we were then met by Sean Brennen, Public Relations Manager for Feld Motor Sports, who took great care of all of us, including my Indy Supercross media credentials card. He directed us to the media trailer to get a media pass so I could do interviews for Southern Biker Magazine. The media pass let me go to the special elevator. It got me into the press box that had chairs,
desks, and a BIG window! While I was in the press box, I watched qualifying until it was time for me to do interviews. First up was the KTM Junior SX Challengers (See below in KTM orange)
expedition laps. They raced for 3 laps. I was glad I met the kids before they raced. I cheered for Joseph Shipley because he was my new friend. He got 2nd place and was on the big screen!
Next we went to our seats and watched the Opening Ceremonies. The American Flag came out and everyone stood up and we sang the National Anthem. At the opening ceremony, they introduced 10 riders. My favorite is Ryan Dungey. They showed a part of his video called “Chasing the Dream” and then said his name and he came out with fireworks. Everyone screamed when he came out.
The 450 Main Event was the last race of the night. It was my favorite part of the whole day! It had 22 riders and was 20 laps long. Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen were battling for the whole race. On the last lap, Ken Roczen passed Ryan Dungey then Ryan Dungey got his spot back and won!
The 250 and 450 Heats went first and then the KTM Junior Challengers had the
KTM Junior SX Challengers The interview I got to do was with three racers of the KTM Junior SX Challengers program. They were my age! I went to the pits and I interviewed Joseph Shipley (#5 from Indiana, PA), Tristan Oslund (#1 from Duvall, WA), and Tyler McDaniel (#11 from Pleasant View, TN). They were there with the KTM Junior SX Challengers program. I asked them questions about racing and then got to see their dirt bikes. The racers were sponsored by KTM and rode KTM 50cc dirt bikes. How old do you have to be to participate with the KTM Jr SX Challengers? “7 to 8 years old” When did you start riding dirt bikes? “Joseph: 3, Tristan and Tyler: 4” Why do you want to race? “Joseph: I look up to my dad. He raced and it’s fun! (His father is Shane Shipley, former professional motocross racer, who won a bronze medal at the X Games in the Super X adaptive motocross race in the paraplegic division in July 2010, 10 years after surviving a devastating crash during a training session). What is the coolest thing about racing motocross? Tyler: “The jumps!”
22 - Southern Biker Magazine
I would like to say a big thank you to Sean Brennen who hooked me up (and my parents and brother and sister) and is helped make a dream possible. “Let’s Go Dirt Racing”!
What is the hardest thing about racing? Tristan: “Beating the unbeatable. And It’s frustrating!” What are your racing goals? Joseph: “To do my best.” Tristan: “To win.” Tyler: “Just living the dream!” I thanked the boys for their time and wished them well on their Exhibition! Dungey Wins Third Monster Energy Supercross In a Row & Now Set to Take the Title in the Next Race By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy (Courtesy of Feld Motor Sports)
I
t’s not often a talent comes along and dominates a sport in this fashion but Ryan Dungey is doing just that. He has dominated the field this year so much that he is set to win the SX Championship in the next race before the season is even over. Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, made its season premiere on FOX Broadcast Channel on Saturday afternoon, with 57,274 fans at The Dome at America’s Center cheering on the world’s best riders on live network television. For the third straight race the battle for the 450SX Class win came down to Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey and RCH Soaring Eagle/Jimmy Johns/ Suzuki Factory Racing’s Ken Roczen, with Dungey leading every lap en route to his third consecutive victory. Dungey cruised to his eighth win of the season, tying the career-high mark he set en route to the championship a year ago. It was also his 30th career victory and 30th consecutive podium finish. Dungey added to his points lead over Roczen, which now sits at
48 points, and has put himself in a position to clinch back-to-back 450SX Class titles at the next race. In the sixth race of the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Championship, a wild Main Event resulted in a shakeup of the championship standings as Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin emerged with his second win of the season. GEICO Honda’s Malcolm Stewart, the championship leader, went down in the track’s sand section. After fighting back up to seventh following his crash, Stewart went down again and fell to 13th on Lap 4. Stewart’s late improvement to eighth allowed him to maintain the points lead, which now sits at a single point over Plessinger with three races remaining.
Eastern Regional 250SX Class Championship Standings 1. Malcolm Stewart, Haines City, Fla., Honda - 115 2. Aaron Plessinger, Hamilton, Ohio, Yamaha - 114 3. Jeremy Martin, Millville, Minn., Yamaha - 99 4. Martin Davalos, Clermont, Fla., Husqvarna - 83 5. Tyler Bowers, Corona, Calif., Kawasaki - 78

Sound Advice from Your Attorney Buyer Beware
E
veryone engages in the process of buying and selling goods on almost a daily basis. It's so common most people don't even give it a second thought; however, maybe you should, especialy when you're buying your next ride. A few questions come to mind when thinking about buying a new or used bike from a public or private seller: Is there a warranty or is the bike as-is; Who is responsible if the bike is damaged before it's picked up, but after you've agreed to buy it; When does your insurance kick in or what should you do to get covered; and, What if you have an accident on your new ride.'
Marcos Garza
Warranty vs As Is
If you're going to a dealer and buying a bike, 99.9% of the time there will be some warranty with the bike guaranteeing that everything works and will work for a set time. Now, what happens if you don't buy a new bike? Sometimes you may buy a bike with part of the manufacture warranty still intact or if you're buying from a dealer, the dealer places a limited warranty on the bike. Always ask, whether buying from a dealership or a private seller. If the seller says the bike has a warranty be sure to get it in writing and have the seller sign the warranty agreement. If the bike doesn't have a warranty ("As Is") then you're buying the bike as it is and if the oil pan drops off when you pull out of the driveway, you're stuck with it. New or used, be sure to ask if you can test-drive the bike first, if the bike is used, it never hurts to ask if you can have it checked by a mechanic before you buy. If a seller is unwilling to allow that, you shuld be skeptical.
Greg Henson Bike Info: 2014 Harley-Davidson ElectraGlide Limited Occupation: Estimator for Lisega Hobbies: Hunting, Riding, Traveling, Woodworking, Carpentry
If you are selling your bike, the best practice is to sell it "as is" with no warranty. If the buyer asks for his money back because the oil pan fell off, you can say it was sold "as is." If you later feel like it's the right thing to do to fix something that you feel like you should have known about, this is always still an option if you sold something "as is."
Buying a used bike, but a tree fell on it The statement above might seem a little strange, but what happens if you go look at a bike, pay for it, come back in a few days to pick it up, and a tree is laying on it; who's responsible for the damage? This is sort of a tricky question depending on the type of agreement you had with the seller. That sounds like an absolutely horrible situation that no one wants to be in so here's how to avoid it. The simplest way to avoid this situation is, take the bike with you the day you buy it. If you can't take the bike with you, make sure your insurance covers the bike There are situations where the seller is liable for the damage, but if the sale is already complete it will be much harder for you to recover what you paid from the seller.
Insurance, insurance, and more insurance When looking to buy a new ride, be sure to talk to your insurance company first. Some insurance policies provide a grace period that covers your new ride; however, not all policies do. If you don't know, ask. If you buy a bike on a whim, call your insurance company as soon as possible and let them know about your purchase. It's better to be safe than sorry, insurance is very important to protect you and others. And don't forget to add uninsured motorist (UM) coverage to your new ride. a 10 minute phone call to your insurance company before you drive the bike off the lot or out of the driveway can save you, your bike, and most importantly, your loved ones' way of life. What do you do if you have an accident right after buying your shiny new bike? This is starting to sound like a broken record, call your insurance company, after the police of course. Your insurance company will start the claims process, but unfortunately the insurance company likely will not give you the full price you paid for the bike, but it will give you a substantial amount back if you have full coverage. If you have a loan on the bike, you may want to consider gap insurance to cover the difference.
