words from the publisher
Merry Christmas, Everyone!
This month marks my 50th birthday, and while I have so many things to be thankful for: a loving husband, health, love of family and friends and a successful business (just to name a few), I recently had this epiphany that I'm not as young as I used to be. In my mind, I'm still 20 or 30 years old and think there is plenty of time to do anything. As I celebrate 50 years on this planet, I realize time is more precious than ever and somewhat limited. I grew up with horses and it was a lifelong dream to have a career with horses, but back in the day, that was limited to the affluent in my home town. There are more and more schools that teach you how to have a career in the horse world now. If only I were younger, was my thought after I learned this. Don't get me wrong, I have a strong passion for motorcycles. My love of horses transferred to motorcycles. When I started riding steel horses, it gave me the same exhilarating feeling as when I was aboard my 4-legged horse. I meet motorcycle enthusiasts and am amazed at the number of other women that ride motorcycles who have/had horses. Happy to know there are other kindred spirits out there. To all you young people: Don't wait too long to find and make your path in life. Don't be fooled into thinking: "I have plenty of time to do ____ (you fill in the blank)," because time passes quickly. In your golden years when you are reflecting one day, be proud of your life's accomplishments and spend it with people who love you and make you happy. Check off Keep Your Knees In The Breeze! all items on your bucket list Kristin "Ms Mag Man" Gracy early, don't wait!

Riders Support Children at Christmas with the TN National Guard By the Mag Man, Randy Gracy
T
he Airmen & Soldiers of the Tennessee National Guard and riders from all over the East TN area came in support for children that are hurting or in need at Christmas time, even if it’s our own Tennessee soldiers. Registration began at Knoxville Harley-Davidson on Clinton Hwy. with Lenny’s Sub Shop dishing out subs, chips and tea for the riders. Riders began their trek stopping at Smokey Mountain Biker Gear, Schrader’s Custom & Collision, Cycle Gear, Biker Rags and then ending at Wild Wing Café. There the riders enjoyed food from Wild Wing Café and a HUGE assortment of auction items donated by so many great businesses. Everything from National Guard backpacks to cowboy hats to watches to trips and even a pair of Diamond Gusset Jeans went to the high bidder. Everyone had a safe ride and funds and toys were donated to those children in need. Benefiting from this year’s ride is the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and the children of soldiers of the CCRF (Combat Casualty Relief Fund).
Knox Gold Exchange, US Gold & Gun, Smokey Mtn Biker Gear, Biker Rags, Wild Wing Café, Schrader's C&C, Knoxville Harley-Davidson and all the riders and supporters of the event. Kristin & I are so blessed to be able to host this event and look forward to next year’s two events! “HUA” to all those of the TNNG, God Bless and Thank You!
I’m honored to ride for this great cause with some of our very own soldiers, after giving so much, who are giving back to their own community. Thank you to several great sponsors and donations from 96.7 Merle FM, Fountain City Jewelers, Ink & Leather Social Club, Whiskey River Wild,

Joe Ball Becomes an American
K
nown to most of us as Smokin' Joe Ball, he arrived here from Canada in July of 2000. Joe Ball, left of the Honorable Tomas A.Varlan, officially became an American Citizen on November 6, 2014. Joe has called Tennessee his home since arriving here...and now he calls the United States, his country. We are thrilled to be a part of this life event with Joe, as were many others of his friends (the court officer said Joe had one of the largest groups to attend a ceremony that he could ever remember). We celebrate this day with him and wish him much success and happiness.

14th Annual Eagle Toy Run
T
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
he Sportsman’s Lodge parking lot filled up with the roar of motorcycles for the largest military toy ride, 14th Annual Eagle Toy Run benefiting the Fort Campbell Holiday House. Operation Homefront was in full swing as the riders made their way to Appleton HarleyDavidson for the end of the ride and a huge afterparty. There the riders enjoyed music from Seven To Shine, World Champions BBQ and lots of refreshments. Lots of toys were donated and several hundreds of dollars were raised for Operation Homefront Tennessee & Kentucky; for our military families and wounded warriors. I just love Appleton’s slogan for the ride; “Salute Those Who Defend Our Country & Protect Our Freedom To Ride”.

Motorcycle Builder Billy Lane Begins To Rebuild Image and Choppers, Inc. By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
W
illiam David “Billy” Lane is widely known as a celebrity motorcycle builder of custom motorcycles and owner of Choppers Inc. in Melbourne, Florida. In September 2006, Billy crashed his pickup head-on into 56-year-old Sebastian Inlet State Park ranger Gerald Morelock’s small Yamaha motorcycle on a darkened road. Morelock was killed. Lane pleaded no contest in June 2009 to one count of vehicular homicide. Prosecutors dropped a DUI manslaughter charge as part of a plea deal. In prison, Billy lived day to day with the accident and its consequences. “I made the single most irresponsible decision in my life and it cost another man his life,” Lane said. “I’ve had to think about what happened and I look up to the sky, pray to God for his soul and for his family”, he said. While in prison, Billy taught other inmates things he himself had learned in regards to building things. He also used the time in the minimum security facility to help others, including youth who were brought to him to talk about his experience in the criminal justice system. During 2012 he was approached by a group to build an Air Force tribute bike as part of a four tribute bike build for Rolling Thunder’s 25th Anniversary. Each bike represented a different branch of the Armed Services. “I hope you can see through all the hard work put into this Air Force bike how much we appreciate all of your service and hard work,” Billy said, addressing the men and women of the Air Force. “That’s why I chose a 1930’s Speedway racer. It represents incredible speed. It’s lightweight and it’s obviously the
12 - Southern Biker Magazine
fastest of the five bikes out there.” Several months prior to his release, Billy was able to be on a paid work release program where he worked at a new motorcycle shop; every day reporting back to the Department’s custody. Billy was finally released from prison on September 19th of this year. Now back in Florida serving three years probation, Billy’s life has turned for the better. He is newly married to his Billy & E long time rin girlfriend, Erin, and is back doing what he loves, back at Choppers, Inc., building bikes. We all are giving him time with family and close friends before bombarding him with interviews and requests. But one thing is for sure; Billy is a changed man and a changed person inside. You can see that with his new quest for a normal life; you can hear it in his voice and a new found smile for everyone to see.
From Billy’s sister Georgia on Billy’s Facebook page: “...We’re going to give him some space to re-adjust, then we’ll soon be back with news and updates, and sharing some of Billy’s plans for the future. Thanks to all of you for the good wishes and support.”
Billy with Mike Wolfe of American Picker
Interesting facts >> Billy Lane holds seven US patents on motorcycle parts and accessories and has authored two books, an autobiography, Billy Lane’s Chop Fiction: It’s not a Motorcycle, Baby, It’s a Chopper (2004) and Billy Lane’s How to Build Old School Choppers, Bobbers and Customs (2005.) He also holds an Associate of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from FSU and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Florida International University. December, 2014

FOBO Tire Pressure Monitoring System World’s First Bluetooth Smart TPMS for Motorcycles & Trikes By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
ere’s an item all of us can use and it’s affordable. How many times do you need to check your tire pressure but just don’t want to or didn’t take the time to. Well, now you can in your spare time. Fobo’s new Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses Bluetooth 4.0 and individual tire sensors to actively monitor pressures and provide real time data to the user’s Smartphone on a 24/7 basis. Simply using a Bluetooth 4.0-enabled smart gauge in place of your tire air cap and the small on-board monitoring unit (stored in saddlebag or handlebar bag), your phone will begin telling you tire pressure by way of a free downloadable app from the company. Each tire is uniquely identified so readouts are provided for each individual tires. If the tire levels drop below acceptable levels, an alarm is sent to your phone. If the system
thinks the tire pressure is unsafe, an even more aggressive alert is sounded. It’s also set up to monitor extra tires so those couples that ride together, can monitor their tires together. The units are designed to be waterproof and can operate in extreme hot and cold weather. They also come with proprietary nuts and wrench for theft deterrent. What better way to keep those tires lasting as long as they are suppose to and keeping you safe at the same time.
It’s another Christmas present coming before next riding season! Units will begin being shipped March of 2015 and here’s where to order yours: https://my-fobo.com/ Product/FOBOBike.

All the Difference in the World
Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.
L
et's face it, because motorcycles predominantly have been built for men, a lot of the bikes don't fit women they way they should. Most women ride perched on the nose of the seat rather than sitting comfortably down in the seat. That's a starting indicator, can you sit comfortably in the seat or do you feel like you're nearly sitting on the gas tank? I'm going to give you a couple of rules of thumb on how to determine if a bike fits you or not. First and foremost, when you come to a stop, can you plant both feet firmly on the pavement with your knees slightly bent? That is of upmost importance in maintaining control of your bike. There are lowering kits and other things you can do to drop your bike a couple of inches, if necessary Secondly, are your arms fully extended when you're simply sitting on the bike? If so, you'll need to either get extenders on the handlebars, a different set of bars, or a
different bike. Now be careful here, because a different set of bars can totally change the handling of the bike. The reason you don't want to be fully extended just sitting on the bike is because then you have no turning radius. You will get into situations where you have more turn than you have arm which can be dangerous. Being overextended also causes upper back, neck and shoulder strain.Your arms should have a slight bend at the elbows and be relaxed from the shoulders. Thirdly, can you sit on the bike with legs comfortably bent and your feet on the pegs or footboards? (I switched to footboards several years ago and would never go back, especially if you're going to do any distance riding.) You should be able to shift and brake without having your legs totally extended. Foot pegs are great for beginner riders because it's easier to get your feet down from pegs than footboards. One last thing, the width of the bike is especially important for women. The bike can look low, but if it's too wide, it won't
be comfortable. It will feel like the frame and seat cut you in the upper thigh.Trying a bike on for size is like trying on shoes. They may look great but if they are the least bit uncomfortable when you just try them on, what about after a day of walking? Ouch!!! You may sit on a bike and think you can live with it, but what about a couple of hundred miles later? I remember the first time I rode a bike that actually fit me. It was a whole new experience! I remember thinking to myself, that's the way most guys feel when they ride. It was awesome to ride hundreds of miles and at the end of the day not have any sore muscles. And I am in my sixties, so whether you're young or old, I encourage you girls, ride a bike that fits you, it makes all the difference in the world!

2015 Honda Pioneer 500 Side-By-Side By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
B
eing a Honda fan since I was five years old, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the new Honda Pioneer 500 side-by-side as my buddy Don Smith at Honda Powersports insisted I needed to try when I was looking for Honda Forman. Since we live on a farm, we need a 4x4 ATV, a UTV or something and this was my chance to check out something new in the market. And Oh boy… I hope Santa thinks I was a good boy this year. I was skeptical at first as my friend Skip unloaded it out of the back of his truck at Windrock Park. That’s right, the back of the truck, not on a trailer. I then climbed into the surprisingly roomy cab and comfortable seat with a threepoint Emergency Locking Retractor seat belt. Right out of the gate I

noticed the power it has with its 475cc engine that is taken from the proven Fourtrax Forman 4X4 ES. The electric shift five-speed transmission with reverse is conveniently located on the steering column with an industry first paddle shift system that made it even more fun to ride! We rode some trails that only ATVs can access and with its 50” wide body, it maneuvered quite well; it’s allowed on those ATV width restricted areas, too. In 2-wheel drive, it was easy to break the wheels loose as there is no
lacking in low end torque on this machine. In 4WD the Pioneer was easily driven and very responsive; just what I need on those hills through the woods and mud holes on the farm. This Pioneer features all the benefits of the 700 model, like comfortable seating for two, a Roll Over Protection Structure, and a 1000-pound load tow capacity. The typical bed that’s on most UTVs is opted out for a heavy duty rack that can haul 475 pounds. Great for hauling horse tack, fencing, hay or coolers full of refreshments. The door December, 2014

The rest of the day was spent riding and admiring the machine as we had many folks come up and look to see what it was. I never got tired till I got home. I’m excited to write this review and have my wife, uh; I mean you, read it. I have always been impressed with Honda with its reliability and performance. The new Pioneer 500

was no exception. It’s perfect for hunting, chores on the farm or a fast trail ride. And Honda has jumped on this unit as there’s a full line of more than 40 Honda Genuine and Signature Accessories to add to it so there’s no waiting for someone to invent it. 23rd Annual East Tennessee Toy Run
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
undreds of riders gathered at the Tennessee Smokies stadium to support the 23rd anniversary of the East Tennessee Toy Run and the season of giving. With Santa leading his sleigh of toys, the riders were escorted by law enforcement officers from Sevier County to Blount County into the parking lot at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson. Lots of toys and funds were raised to give back to the area communities for those not as fortunate this year at Christmas time. Many auction items were available and you could also lift off the ground in a hot air balloon with Santa. This year’s event marked the first East Tennessee Toy Run without a very dear friend of mine who passed away this year; Jim Miscichoski was instrumental in organizing this ride and always giving back to the community. Jim may not have been there physically, but his spirit brought the riders great weather and a warm feeling of giving throughout the day.

TN Helmet Laws Clarified By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy via Rep. John Tidwell Press Release
Rep.john.tidwell@capitol.tn.gov
S
tate Representative John Tidwell entered into a battle with Tennessee state troopers that unfairly ticketed motorcyclists while incorrectly citing a law that Tidwell authored. A group of riders complained to Tidwell about a recent incident in which they were pulled over by a state trooper for allegedly not wearing DOT approved helmets. The trooper then made the riders wait on the shoulder of the interstate for 45 minutes, while a friend brought the appropriate helmets from Nashville. Tennessee law does not require a DOT approved helmet in all cases. For riders over the age of 21 meeting certain requirements, helmets with other certifications may be legal for wear. Tidwell then visited the Bikers Who Care organization with US congressional candidate Dan Cramer to hear their concerns. Tidwell contacted Lt. Colonel Dereck Stewart of the Tennessee Department of Safety Highway Patrol to find out why the law was not being enforced correctly, and also why a state trooper was imposing a punishment rather than just writing citations. The CMT/ABATE, Inc (Concerned Motorcyclists of Tennessee/ American Bikers Active Towards Education) legislative team headed by Director Tony Dabbs was instrumental in bringing both

Rep. Tidwell and the Department of Safety together.
Tidwell received a letter from Stewart stating that all troopers will be retrained on the specifics of Tennessee’s helmet law and the appropriate way to enforce those laws. All state troopers will be required to read the letter from the chief about the helmet laws. “I hope this will be the end of this issue with the helmet law, TCA 55-9-302, but I will keep in touch with the Bikers Who Care and other riders to make sure bikers who follow the law aren’t unfairly targeted,” Tidwell said. Tenn. Code Ann. § 55-9-302 Title 55 Motor and Other Vehicles : Chapter 9 Equipment -- Lighting Regulations Part 3 Required Equipment on Motorcycles and Motor Driven Cycles 55-9-302. Crash helmet required for driver and passenger -- Exceptions. (a) The driver of a motorcycle, motorized bicycle, as defined in chapter 8 of this title, or motordriven cycle, and any passenger on any of these, shall be required to wear either a crash helmet meeting federal standards contained in 49 CFR 571.218, or, if the driver or passenger is twenty-one (21) years of age or older, a helmet meeting the following requirements: (1) Except as provided in
subdivisions (a)(2)-(4), the helmet shall meet federal motor vehicle safety standards specified in 49 CFR 571.218; (2) Notwithstanding any provision in 49 CFR 571.218 relative to helmet penetration standards, ventilation airways may penetrate through the entire shell of the helmet; provided, that no ventilation airway shall exceed one and one half inches (1 1/2’’) in diameter; (3) Notwithstanding any provision in 49 CFR 571.218, the protective surface shall not be required to be a continuous contour; and (4) Notwithstanding any provision in 49 CFR 571.218 to the contrary, a label on the helmet shall be affixed signifying that the helmet complies with the requirements of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Southern Impact Research Center (SIRC), or the Snell Foundation. (b) This section does not apply to persons riding: (1) Within an enclosed cab; (2) Motorcycles that are fully enclosed, have three (3) wheels in contact with the ground, weigh less than one thousand five hundred pounds (1,500 lbs.) and have the capacity to maintain posted highway speed limits; (3) Golf carts; or (4) In a parade, at a speed not to exceed thirty (30) miles per hour, if the person is eighteen (18) years of age or older.

Gloria Jeans Restaurant Located in Kingston, TN next door to Food City is Gloria Jeans Restaurant. Fine southern cooking with a little upscale thrown in. For starters, try the fried green tomatoes with country ham gravy @ $4. The plate specials are fried chicken, pulled pork, catfish, meatloaf, shrimp & grits. I went with meatloaf with pan-fried corn and fried okra @ $10. It was really good and the okra is whole pods, not cut up. Copper Top had pulled pork with green beans and cheddar grits @ $10. For dessert, it was banana pudding with miniature vanilla wafers. Gloria Jeans is the new hot spot. Check 'em out at www.gloriajeansrestaurant.com or call 865248-8506. Gotta go back for a fried green tomato bacon sandwich.

s the weather gets colder, and your thoughts turn to the holidays, the desire to hibernate starts to take place. For most, the bike season is coming to an end. Yet, at Steelhorse Law, we can arguably say this is our favorite time of the year. When the weather turns cold, it means the holidays are here. It is time to give thanks and slow down and remember what is important in life. Event season is coming to an end, and the last remaining rides are the ones that truly matter and are quite honestlly, our favorites of the year. Being able to participate in the toy runs for kids, and taking care of the families and friends that we have met throughout the year who may be in need. Although looked at sometimes as rough and tough on the outside, we get the honor of working with the motorcycle community every day and observe what many don't get to see. The biker community is one of the most generous and kind hearted, tight knit groups in the country.

During the year, Steelhorse Law is dedicated to protecting the families and rights of our friends in the Southeast. We work tirelessly in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and beyond, making sure the brethren of the Southern Biker family are taken care of and protected. We travel around to chapter meetings giving speeches on how to protect yourselves before an accident ever happens, and welcome questions and calls at any time from our readership. We are grateful to our friends at Southern Biker Magazine who give us the honor of writing an article for you every month giving legal tips and advice on how to keep you safe. But this month, we would like to simply stand back and give thanks to all of the readers that come up to our booths and speak to us, and all of the individuals we get to meet at events, chapter meetings and rides all over the southeast. All of you who call with questions, concerns or call us in their time of need. We want to thank Southern Biker Magazine and the Southern Biker family who have allowed us to become a part of their family. We want all of you to know how appreciative we are to be part of this community and enjoy doing our part in raising awareness for biker safety. Check back with us next month as Steelhorse Law will continue with our commitment with Southern Biker Magazine by bringing information and knowledge to protect their riders. Yet, in the meantime, we want to wish all of our friends and family in the community happy holidays. Join us in giving thanks for your health and safety, and we look forward to seeing each and every one of you at an event in 2015.

Boswell’s Nashville Toy Run Benefits Metro Police Charities By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
C
entennial Park became full of hundreds of motorcycle riders from all over the area who came to ride in support of the Metro Police Children’s Charities at the 20th Annual Boswell Toy Parade. Escorted by some of Tennessee’s finest, Santa and Mrs. Claus rode their motorcycles leading the parade through downtown Nashville full of onlookers cheering and waiving. Our ending destination was Boswell’s Harley-Davidson for the after party. Live music, a full cookout and getting to know new folks was the end to a great ride. All proceeds for the event went to benefit the Christmas Basket program, the Andrew Jackson Youth Camp and the Shop With a Cop program.
