Mother Nature is showing off her power and fury.Thousands of people are without power and the low temperatures make keeping warm a challenge. Our prayers go out to those negatively impacted by the storm. December had record-setting high temperatures and we joked about how we would pay for that warm weather. Victory Motorcycles Unveils the Combustion Concept By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
V
ictory Motorcycles recently revealed their “Combustion” concept motorcycle fitted with their new 1200cc production engine. The concept motorcycle is being touted as the future of Indian motorcycles. The engine is a 1200cc liquid-cooled 60-degree V-Twin with four valves per cylinder. Third generation bike builder Zach Ness, grandson to Arlen Ness, put the final touches on this bike which has received huge waves thus far. The engine is destined to end up in one of Victory’s new models which will be announced later this year. He said his inspiration for the Combustion came from what the world thought of American muscle cars so his design had to have high horse power with low total weight. “I wanted to create a bike that was fast, light and ready to attack the next green light”, said Ness. Ness teamed up with Michael Song and the Victory Motorcycles’ Industrial Design team to create this masterpiece. The bike just makes a loud statement. A really loud one when Zach cranked it up during a private party at Unions Garage in Brooklyn, New York. “This bike is awesome; loads of power, and an insane engine sound too.…as one of the first to ride this new engine, it absolutely RIPS!”

This was the third concept version with the engine and thus far, the absolute best design and look of all three (the first two concepts being Project 156 and Ignition). Now, they throw in a little Roland Sands and Urs Erbacher with Song and Ness and they’ve got all the players who will help develop the upcoming production bike featuring Victory’s liquid-cooled 1200cc engine. Ray Price Passes Away AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Member and Drag Racer By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
W
hen I received word from the AMA that Ray Price had passed away, I just couldn’t believe it. The motorcycle industry lost a great ambassador for all ages. Ray was truly an innovator and inventor of his time. He designed the motorcycle wheelie bar and he developed the two-speed automatic racing transmission. From the AMA: “Mr. Price bought his first motorcycle in 1963. In 1967, at the age of 30, he started his motorcycle drag racing career with a 1966 Harley-Davidson Sportster. He and his Ray Price HarleyDavidson drag racing team attained multiple race victories, records and championships in AMA Dragbike, the All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) and the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA). Mr. Price’s personal racing career continued beyond his 65th birthday into the 2003 AHDRA season”, (I was covering AHDRA events and got to meet him). In his multiple years of racing, Ray won 46 national events and set 51 records, and was the National Points Champion in 1979-80. He set out awhile training other riders but returned to racing from 1995 until 2003. Prior to retiring from racing at the age of 66, Ray set the IHRA nitro-fuel record of 6.36 seconds at 224.21 MPH. Ray was involved heavily in his dealerships and his Nitro Harley race team with rider Tommy Grimes, a defending two-time NHRA Harley-Davidson Top Fuel Drag Racing champion. Ray’s accolades include being inducted into the American Motorcycle Association Hall of Fame, the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, the N.C. Drag Racing Hall of Fame, the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame and the National Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. Price is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Robin, and grandchildren Rebecca and Jordan Richardson.

Supercross is Heating Up By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
n race #1 at Anaheim, Jason Anderson made history by riding his Husqvarna past everyone and winning his first ever AMA 450 Supercross. He also made a first for Husqvarna as it was the manufacturer’s very first win in Supercross…ever. Defending Champion Ryan Dungey came back to finish second but could never mount a challenge to Anderson. Vince Friese collided with Weston Peick in a semi-race with Peick taking exception and began throwing punches to back of Friese’s helmet. That landed Peick a 1-race suspension and a $5,000 fine. Ryan Dungey began his own drama again this year, but this time with James Stewart. Going into a 180 corner turn, Stewart was in second and Dungey third. That’s when Dungey T-boned Stewart slamming into him and knocking him to the ground hard and Stewart was knocked out. Dungey apologized but the damage was done. Stewart would have to miss the next two races for concussion concerns.

The SX 250 West Series began Cooper Webb continuing his dominance of the class and the other riders seem to be racing for second and third. But it didn’t end without drama. Going into San Diego and race #2, tensions were high and expectations were high. Ryan Dungey returned to the top step of the podium for his first win of the year and taking over the points lead in the process. It was his 23rd career 450SX Class win and his first ever victory in San Diego. The highlight of the evening for most was seeing Chad Reed ride

like the Reed of old. He took second place and did it in dominating fashion coming from back in the field passing riders with the speed we are used to seeing from the 22. “It was a good night. I got off to decent start and as able to pick my way up to front,” said Dungey. “Reed finished in the runner-up spot for the 128th podium result of his career and Jason Anderson with his first SX 450 win on his Husqvarna his first since rejoining the Factory Yamaha effort for the 2016 season. In the Western Regional 250SX Class Championship, defending champion Cooper Webb had to come from behind as he was shuffled to eighth off the first turn and earned his second consecutive Main Event win. “I got another bad start unfortunately, but it was awesome to come through pack like that,” said Webb, who has won six straight Main Events dating back to last season. 450SX Class Championship Standings 1.

nd EVERYONE is invited! Bike Week is celebrating its 75th Anniversary March 4th-13th in Daytona Beach, Florida. Bike Week's history was actually rooted in the Daytona 200 motorcycle race. The inaugural race was held in January 1937. Then because of World War II the race was put on hold. So instead of the races, bikers kept coming to Daytona Beach to enjoy the area, the weather and the comradery. This unofficial party eventually became known as "Bike Week" and attracts motorcyclists from all over the world. This year we are celebrating the events' 75th Anniversary and the area is promising one of the biggest and best rallies ever, so you won't want to miss it! Our city has been doing a bunch of renovations from the International Speedway to the Boardwalk. There's been nearly 2 Billion dollars' worth of investments in the area and the Speedway alone has spent $400,000,000 on their renovation. From what I hear, it sounds like everyone is rolling out the red carpet for this event. It's an historic event and I decided that my goal is to be able to ride at the 100th anniversary. That will make me eighty-seven so I will have to stay fit to be able to continue to ROAR! Hope to see you here.

75th Annual Daytona Bike Week One for the Record Books By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy his is truly the Daytona Bike Week you do not want to miss. For many of us, we may never see another milestone like the 75th Daytona Bike Week in our lifetime. The next big one would be the 100th and that my friend, is 25 years away. So while you are thinking about vacation or something to do or just a getaway, Daytona Beach, Florida should be your destination March 4th though the 13th.

Many events will be going on and with somewhere between 700,000 to one million riders expected, this should be the Mecca of all rallies to go to and be seen at. Daytona is preparing for this huge milestone and the businesses and hotels have their arms wide open.

Over 400 bands are estimated to be playing somewhere for this huge event. The Daytona International Speedway will have a huge presence with its $400 million Daytona Rising renovations.
There you can enjoy all the racing action with the Supercross, the Daytona 200, AMA Flat Track racing or explore the many motorcycle manufacturers and vendors at the Midway. There’s so much to do and so many things to see and ride to, you’ll need at least 10 days to scratch the surface of what the Historic 75th Daytona Bike Week will be bringing. Make your reservations and get prepared for the greatest Bike Week of all time…in our lifetime.
Large events will be held up and down Main Street where bands and events will be taking place all day and night. Other great places to visit will be the vendors and businesses on Beach Street and the beach strip businesses, restaurants and hotels. Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson on Hwy 1A will be packed with motorcycle riders and then you can stop by many places on 1A on your way back to your hotel like the Ironhorse Saloon, the Broken Spoke Saloon, Saints & Sinners, the Beaver Bar and more. Honda’s New Motorcycle-Race Car Coming to a Track Near You

ver wonder what the feel of the asphalt would be at say, 125mph? Well look no further. Honda has a new Project 2&4 concept just for you. They’ve created a stunning singleseat track-day motorcycle-race car. Honda says it combines “the most thrilling elements of riding a motorcycle with the most engaging characteristics of driving a car”. Powered by Honda’s MotoGP RC213V engine, modified to run on public roads, the car weighs just 405kg. The 2&4 combines the stability of a car with the stripped-down simplicity of a two-wheeler and a motorcycle motor bolted in for good measure. The 2&4 is powered by Honda’s MotoGP RC213V engine with 212-horsepower, the 999-cc V4 engine has been modified for street use, which is mated to a DCT (dual-clutch transmission) gearbox, the low-slung wedge of steel, inspired by the 1965 Honda RA272 Formula 1 race car, is a real head-turner ... in every conceivable way. Project 2&4 is also very compact, measuring 3.05m in length, 1.82m wide and just 0.995m high

The open cockpit somewhat gives you the real feel of the road as you sit in the suspended floating seat. Changing gear is easy and responsive with the paddleshifters behind the steering wheel. The race-ready look is complimented with the pro-suspension and bronze alloy wheels. If you have a better half, don’t worry yourself too much. It looks like the right side cover can be unbolted, revealing space for another seat for a soon-to-be-frightened passenger, like the wife or girlfriend. When asked if Honda would ever put this into production, Martin Petersson, the Honda motorcycle designer behind Project 2&4 said, “We produce everything from a 25cc leaf blower to a $4m business jet, so this would be a fantastic addition to our awesome product line up.”

Yamaha’s MotoBot Designed to Surpass Human Skills By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
J
ust when you think all of these Syfy movies are all built out of animation and computer generated pictures, your mind is blown by a true piece of the future. While car manufacturers are developing self-driving cars, Yamaha is taking it a step further. At CES, the company introduced its latest R&D project; Motobot. Motobot is an “autonomous motorcycle-riding humanoid”. They have created an android-like motorcycle rider. Yamaha partnered with research firm SRI International with goals of improving performance in Yamaha motorcycles and the development of better AI robots. Pushing the limits of both man and machine, Yamaha is going at this project in several ways. One is to better Motobot as quickly as possible. As technology advances each day, so too will Motobot. The droid learns on each ride it takes and adjusts for errors just as a human would, only better. It will remember a certain bump in the asphalt and where it is exactly. That’s the type learning capability it has and that same learning capability will only increase exponentially over time. As of now Motobot is all mechanical looking like a rider bent over a sport

bike. If you raise the visor, there you see the cameras, wires and electronics that encompass the unit. However, who’s to say that within 5 years, Motobot becomes a cyborg with synthetic skin and new human-like looks. It’s not going to race a World Champion like Josh Hayes any time soon, BUT it will steadily get better. “Motobot is getting better at cornering,” says Hiroshi Saijou, Yamaha’s CEO and Managing Director of its Ventures & Laboratory. “Motobot has not done a high-speed slalom…Yet.” Yamaha’s 2017 goal is for Motobot to run lap speeds in excess of 120 mph. By 2020 it wants to take what Motobot has learned and turn it into value for its customers. But the future for Motobot can be heard in its robot/child voice. It states, “The way you ride is both beautiful and exciting. I am not human, but there has to be something only I am capable of,” before reiterating its primary directive, “I am Motobot! I was created to surpass you.” Can anyone remember Terminator? This is truly a step into innovation and a huge leap into future technology; only time will tell where we go from here. February 2016

The 2016 Motorcycle Drag Racing Season Gets Underway By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
W
hether you’re a professional, an amateur, a fan or just love the smell of Nitro, the 2016 motorcycle drag racing season kicks off this month with the NHRA Circle K Winter Nationals. Top racers will be vying for a chance to win trophies, money and of course, the championships in each drag racing series. Motorcycle drag racing is a sport like no other where you can go in the pits and talk with the racers and their pit crews, as long as they aren’t under the clock to get the bike prepared for the next round. It allows the fan to get that up close and personal feel when other sports won’t even allow you to look without a fence or bodyguards.

My all time favorite, Angelle Sampey returns this year with Star Racing on the NHRA circuit. She’s the winningest female racer of all time and this could just be her year to win another championship. I’m also looking forward to seeing my hometown racer (retired) Tom Caldwell with Mike Pearce Racing out on the AMRA circuit where his team will defend their 2015 Championship. Sound Advice from Your Attorney
A
s a Handgun Carry Permit Holder and having left my status as an active duty Marine in 2005, I understand the pride in ownership that many enjoy who own guns, I also likewise respect those who believe that gun ownership is more risk than reward. However, I've experienced several situations over the years as an attorney that make me want to share with my fellow firearms owners in order to keep them out of harm's way or legal trouble. I recall the Marine Corps' training I once received: Marcos Garza 1) Never point your gun at something you don't intend to shoot. 2) Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to shoot. 3) Treat every weapon as though it were loaded. 4) Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire (unless you own a Glock of course) These are good safety points for sure. However, I would like to add one: 5) Don't display your weapon to win a pissing contest on the road (or anywhere else for that matter). Yes, I know, you were simply displaying your weapon to ward off trouble. I get it. However, a firearm is an absolute last resort, the best firearm is one that never has to be drawn. If you can turn around and walk away, walk. If you can turn around and run away without endangering anyone, then run. However, once you pull that gun out, whether you fire it or not, it is potentially a Class C Felony Aggravated Assault (I know, I've defended several folks under these kinds of circumstances). Class C Felony Aggravated Assault is defined as follows: (a)(1) A person commits aggravated assault who: (A) Intentionally or knowingly commits an assault as defined in § 39-13-101 (see below Simple Assault Definition), and the assault: (i) Results in serious bodily injury to another; (ii) Results in the death of another; (iii) Involved the use or display of a deadly weapon; or (iv) Involved strangulation or attempted strangulation; or (B) Recklessly commits an assault as defined in § 39-13-101(a)(1), and the assault: (i) Results in serious bodily injury to another; (ii) Results in the death of another; or (iii) Involved the use or display of a deadly weapon. Simple Assault Definition: (a) A person commits assault who: (1) Intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causes bodily injury to another; (2) Intentionally or knowingly causes another to reasonably fear imminent bodily injury; or (3) Intentionally or knowingly causes physical contact with another and a reasonable person would regard the contact as extremely offensive or provocative. At the end of the day, if you display your weapon and someone is "reasonably" afraid, then you could be found guilty of a Class C Felony Aggravated Assault and face 3-12 years in prison. Why have to deal with that? Why have to spend thousands of dollars to defend yourself from a criminal charge? As I often declare to my clients, (and myself when I have a disagreement with my wife), Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy? I'll choose happy over winning an argument in most cases. I'll choose happy over having to defend myself against a felony charge. Do the wise thing, the practical thing, unless it's life or death, keep your weapon concealed! Finally, (6) Never keep your weapon where a child can get to it. I once had a case where I represented a young girl who became a paraplegic due to the fact that someone had left a handgun in a shoe rack on the back of a door. Needless to say, children believed it to be a toy gun, until it went off and rendered a child crippled. I don't include this example to ruin anyone's day or to try to be overly dramatic, but accidents happen among young children and sometimes the availability of a weapon for a depressed teenager can create catastrophic and irreversible results! Be careful!
