words from the publisher

Hello Folks,

Hope this finds you doing well. The New Year is upon us and we wish you much success and blessings for 2016. During the Tennessee National Guard Toy Run last November, several members of the Infidels Motorcycle Club from Clarksville, TN Chapter rode to Knoxville and delivered toys carried on their motorcycles. What an impressive sight to see them arrive with children's bicycles strapped to the motorcycles.

NEW LOCATION!

So much generosity demonstrated by so many kind people. What a great feeling. It warms my heart and makes a child happy. There are so many toy runs held during the holidays but there are children who still go without. Hopefully in the near future, there will be fewer and fewer children going without. Thank you to everyone who gives of themselves to others. I read a quote the other day by Pablo Picasso that I loved: "The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." Those are very profound words that helped me and I hope it helps others. Happy New Year! Keep Your Knees In The Breeze! AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Inducts Six New Members By the Mag Man, Randy Gracy

H

onored to be a guest of the AMA, I attended the induction ceremony for the 2015 AMA Hall of Fame inductees. Arriving early and before I knew it, I was talking with two inductees like they were my neighbors. The evening’s events began with the Hall of Fame VIP Reception where everyone could meet some of motorcycle’s greatest stars and their families. The attendees were treated to lavish hors d’oeuvres and drinks complements of Suzuki. After a couple of hours, everyone prepared for the induction ceremony. Actor and AMA board member Perry King hosted the ceremony and inducted six new members into the Hall; dirt tracker Alex Jorgensen, road racing champion John Kocinski, longtime Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. race team manager Keith McCarty, entrepreneur and industry patron John Parham, off-road racing champion Rodney Smith and former HarleyDavidson CEO Richard Teerlink. “A strong future can only be built on a secure historical footing, and the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame is

motorcycling’s custodian of that history,” said AMA Board of Directors Chair Maggie McNally. “It is the showcase of those who have built the foundation of American motorcycling. Tonight, it’s my honor to welcome six more of these amazing individuals into the Hall of Fame.” A video was shown chronicling each inductee’s motorcycling history and accomplishments and then each were presented their AMA Hall of Fame Rings. The 1999 inductee Wayne Raining was presented the 2015 AMA Hall of Fame Legend for his ongoing motorcycle contributions. King closed the ceremony with these remarks, “From their motorcycles that set and broke world records, to inventions and innovations that revolutionized an industry, to the stories of hardfought victories, from the racetrack all the way to the halls of government, each member of the Hall of Fame is an enduring testament to the steadfast and unwavering ability to dream big -- and never look back.” What a great five days I had in Florida that October; Biketoberfest, the AIMExpo, meeting motorcycle icons and the 2015 Hall of Fame VIP reception. I got to mark a couple things off my bucket list. For more information on the AMA or the AMA Hall of Fame, visit www.americanmotorcyclist. com. January 2016

American International Motorcycle Expo Draws Record Crowd By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

A

s a special guest of the AMA, I first pulled into the parking lot at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC). I could not believe my eyes; motorcycles…a sea of motorcycles as far as I could see…thousands of them. They were all here to see what’s new and hitting the motorcycle market soon. Over 18,500 people attended the 2015 AIMExpo in Orlando, Florida. This number includes riders, motorcycle industry attendees and customers from all 50 American States and international visitors from more than 50 countries. This year’s event total was also aided from another event just 55 miles away in Daytona Beach, the 23rd Annual Biketoberfest. The AIMExpo was aware of the events coinciding with each other and offered folks traveling from Daytona to Orlando a party bus for $40 round trip.

This was the largest event of this type I have ever attended, and just as I entered the huge convention center, I could barely see the other side of the arena. With a record number of exhibitors (561), there were lots to do, things to see and new/ interesting items hitting the motorcycle retail shops soon. Every single thing you buy or need or even thought of was here for you motorcycle…no matter how big your dreams are. It was an opportunity for riders to get an up-close and personal hands-on feel of the newest products and the newest technological gadgets for riding comfort and safety. My favorite invention for this year was Helite Moto rider airbag getting to test

10 - Southern Biker Magazine

Helite Moto’s newest airbag technology. The safety technology is designed to save a rider from serious injury by supporting the neck, spine, back, kidney, and rib areas of the body. It deploys in less than 1/100th of a second and fits easily over clothing. I was also exited to test BMW’s Virtual Ride Experience. You could hop on one of BMW’s latest models and take laps around the Circuito De Almeria, BMW Virtual Ride the iconic test facility in Almeria, Spain, navigate along a dirt trail on the R 1200GS and cruise down a tree-lined country road while enjoying the popular R nineT, all without leaving the confines of the convention center.

had been designed and hand built by some of North America’s top custom builders. Some of the nicest custom builds on the planet were here to compete. The vintage bikes took center stage as well with the Retro Affair vintage bike show. Several industry seminars took place throughout the events weekend to enhance motorcycle professionals and sharpen their knowledge on customers and industry specifics. It was hard to pull away from the AIMExpo, but I had to get back reporting on Biketoberfest and all of the events surrounding it. Next year’s dates for the expo have been set for October 13-16 and hopes of topping 20,000 attendees could be attained. We’ll see you there!

Outside attendees could demo nearly everything from simple to electric to amphibious at the AIMExpo Outdoors. Motorcycle manufactures Honda, Yamaha, Star, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Can-Am, Hyosung, Johnny Pag, KYMCO, Zero and Harley Davidson offered street demo rides, while Arctic Cat, BRP, Honda, Massimo Motors, Suzuki, KYMCO and Yamaha offered offroad demos of ATVs, side-by-sides and I found a fantastic land to water ATV all-inone, the Quadski from Gibbs. You can hit the dirt roads and then go right into the water to Gibb's Quadski cross a lake if needed. An addition to this year’s event was the Championship of the Americas custom bike show with class divisions of Retro, Street, Freestyle and Performance Custom that January 2016

Riding on Gravel

Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

gravel. I was traveling in our normal road ruts. For those of you who haven’t lived on gravel roads, it’s the hard packed area where most of the traffic travels. The gravel is not as loose there and it’s easier to manage. Keeping two wheels on the road is all about traction and when gravel is loose, you have less traction.

I

grew up in Northern Minnesota and learned to ride both bicycles and motorcycles on gravel roads. Actually, one of my first wipe-outs with my sister on the back was going around a corner on our Honda 90 and hitting gravel piled up by the grader that had recently been at work. I still have a scar on my elbow and healthy respect for gravel roads!

Whenever you have rain, sand, gravel or anything that creates less traction, one of the most important things you can do is slow down. It’s also important to not do that suddenly. Do everything slowly and avoid sudden moves. It’s also important not to slow down to the degree that your motorcycle becomes unstable. Slow and easy is your best bet. You want to have an easy grip on your handlebars. It’s similar to going

Obviously, when we came around that corner, I wasn’t expecting a pile of loose

over a grated bridge. You don’t want to fight your bike. Relax, you may feel a little wiggle in the bars but just allow it to have that slight movement and avoid over-steering. Where your head and eyes go still holds true, so also be careful not to start looking down at the gravel. Keep your head and eyes up and looking ahead just like you would do on asphalt. Also, prepare for the experience. Find some safe gravel roads and practice, practice, practice. So in summary, find the hardest packed area of the road, slow your speed but not suddenly, keep your speed slow and steady, relax and don’t over-grip or over-steer the handlebars, keep your head up and your eyes forward and you’ll do great.

Cooper Webb Wins AUS-X Open 2016 Monster Energy AMA Championship in Australia Supercross TV Schedule Announced By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

orehead City, North Carolina’s Cooper Webb proved he’s ready for the big time. He edged out Chad Reed to grab the inaugural two-day AUS-X Open Championship at the AllPhones Arena in Sydney, Australia. One Day-1, Reed took the checkered flag. On the all-deciding second night of racing, Webb was the big winner but not until he, Reardon and Reed all got tangled up. Webb got away with Reed trying to overtake him in the waning laps, but couldn’t make the pass. Webb was crowned the Champion and everyone took notice. After turning pro in 2013, Webb took his first championship winning the 250SX West Region in 2015. The weekend also featured a threelap head-to-head exhibition race between Reed and long-time rival Ricky Carmichael, who impressed the crowd with his speed, but it wasn’t good enough to beat Reed. “It was an exciting weekend and you couldn’t have asked for it to turn out any better than the way it did…so it was a really fantastic event,” said Carmichael.

Florida Gulf Coast Abate Toy Run Raises Funds & Lots of Toys By Joe Key

I

t was that time again for toys to start flowing to the kids. The Abate of Florida Gulf Coast Chapter’s Toy Run had 270 registered bikes and a huge crowd of people. Riders brought in lots of toys and the event rose over $4,000. The toys and money went to local charities in Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties including the USMC Toys for Tots, The Shiners, and the Lakeview Center.

Brandon and Dragon and the Abate chapter would like to Thank “Night Train, Eagles Talon, and Boogie Inc.” for all they did, with no strings. For more information on the ride or what Abate does, go to www. gulfcoast.abateflorida.com.

Several motorcycle clubs came to support the ride; The Blue Knights, Legion of Doom, American Legion Riders, Am-Vets, Red Knights Fire and Iron, and even an all girls club the Wild Thangs. The ride took us on a 40 mile run through Santa Rosa County in and about Blackwater and Coldwater areas, crossing old wooden bridges, streams, and rivers in the back country. All had a blast, and on Sunday, in a dry county.

Move over Donner and Blitzen, Riders are Here to Spread Christmas Cheer By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

W

ith Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving, the 25th Annual Catoosa County Toy Run had to be a must toy ride for the year and it seemed to be just that as hundreds of riders came to support the children in need in North Georgia at Christmas time. Even Kermit the Frog came to help. Southern Biker Road Crew members Jerry Smith and Frank Pate were there snapping pics of the many folks that came and also to donate toys and time for a great cause.

The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office puts this event on every year and distributes toys to needy families during the Christmas season. Over 1,400 children in the North Georgia area will benefit from these riders and the community who gave.

Riders came in droves from several states with toys strapped to their motorcycles and few in vehicles, but that was ok with everyone. The spirit of giving had arrived and nothing seemed more joyful than giving. With motorcycles packed and strapped with toys, the escorted ride headed from Ft. Oglethorpe through the battlefield to Ringgold High School. It was a great ride and the children were the big winners, thanks to those great motorcycle-riding big hearts.

Ride to North Carolina’s Riders Roost By Daniel Marlow

I

would recommend to anyone that’s been looking for that place to unwind, in a place where the American spirit still lives strong, a ride to Riders Roost Motorcycle Campground will be worth your while. Originally built in the hills of Ferguson, North Carolina in 1989, alongside a nice mountain stream by four brothers, this place has everything you need or want; lodging facility suites, cabins or plenty of room to tent camp. The current owners, David and Pam, are celebrating their 6th Year Anniversary as owners. If you like rallies but like a little more relaxing environment, the Riders Roost is packed with music and events the entire year, which makes it a great destination for those weekend getaways. The owners even boast, “If you don’t have a good time we will give you your money back.” Well I believe they will never lose a dime, as it’s such a great manicured facility, and an awesome place to stay. The funniest thing, people come for a little camping, yet leave planning their next visit to see new family they didn’t know they had. The owners state, “Our Campsites and lodging facilities are situated alongside a pristine mountain stream where you can sleep to the soothing sounds of white water rapids. Swim in our huge country swim hole or just lounge in the rocks and let the cool mountain water ease muscles weary from a day in the saddle. Recreational facilities, ice and chests, grilles, firewood, basic shop services, and even air for ya mattress are all available. We realize that you can’t carry everything on a bike, so we probably have it at the ROOST. If ya don’t see it, just ask."

Honda Presents Loyal Owner With 55th Honda Motorcycle American Honda Finance Corporation Senior Vice President David W. Paul handed longtime Honda owner Harry Adler the key to a 2015 Honda CB300F. The motorcycle is the 55th Honda that Adler, 84, has owned. Over the years, Adler has owned a wide variety of Honda models, including a Helix scooter, Grom, CRF230M, CBR250R, VT600CD, VTX1300 and VTX1800C. Including his new CB300F, Adler currently owns eight Honda motorcycles, as well as two Honda generators. “Over the years, my number-one form of recreation has been motorcycle riding, and based on my experience, Honda is the best,” said Adler, who has ridden motorcycles since 1963. “They make a great product, and the people that represent the company are wonderful.”

BMW Targets the TT with e-Superbike BMW is thought to be prepping a bike for the 2016 TT Zero electric race at the Isle of Man TT with the awesome electric S1000eRR the firm showed last month. BMW is remaining tight-lipped about the project, and went to great pains to explain this bike was a rolling test bed when it was revealed in mid-November. The TT Zero event has grown

in stature over the past few years with major manufacturers. BMW has made clear their intent to grow the the range of electric scooters and motorcycles they produce within a short period of time, and racing the S1000eRR would be a logical next step.

Suzuki Touts Turbocharged Twin Engine at Tokyo Motor Show Suzuki had a very finished-looking turbocharged parallel twincylinder engine on display at the Tokyo Motor Show, which looks like it will be the engine used in what we hear will be the production version of the “Recursion” concept bike. No information was available other than the engine’s XE7 nomenclature, but its overall architecture looks very similar to what was originally thought to be a mockup powerplant used in the Recursion (apparently that concept bike was closer to reality than we thought). Suzuki claimed back then that the 588cc engine would be good for 100 hp @ 8,000 rpm and 75 ft/lb of torque at 4,500 rpm, so if this is indeed the engine, those are pretty impressive power figures from such a small displacement twin.

Honda’s $184,000 Street Legal MotoGP Bike

Since it was first introduced to the world as a production bike in June, the Honda RC213V-S has had the motorcycle world buzzing. The street legal MotoGP replica is Honda’s ultimate showcase

of performance and engineering. This is the closest performance a road-going bike available to the public has ever been to a MotoGP machine and comes hand built and is a result of a compact 90-degree 999cc V-4 with titanium connecting rods and race-derived features that include an under-seat fuel tank and carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic fairing, in addition to several parts directly from Honda’s MotoGP bike; swingarm, slipper clutch, magnesium Marchesini wheels, Öhlins forks, adjustable footrests and foot controls, and most of the Brembo brake components. It also features selectable power modes, engine-brake control, and traction control with position detection technology, making it one of the finest built street legal bikes ever. A maximum of 250 units will be produced globally and the US version of the bike will produce approximately 101 hp in order to pass US regulations.

Supercar Maker Lotus Explodes Into the Suberbike Game They’ve been making sick cars for decades, so why not make a sick motorcycle? The cars built by the British manufacturer always seemed a little too low, a little too angular, a little too awesome to be a part of the real world. Well, now we’re even more obsessed. Lotus has now released the first images of the super powerful (200 horses!), incredibly lightweight (399 lbs.) C-01. Designed by the guy behind the “light bikes” in Tron: Legacy, this superbike looks like something right out of your deepest sci-fi fantasies. So, if you have about $140K burning a hole in your savings account, act now (only about 100 are being made) and get on the list via Lotus Motorcycles. I’ll be the creepy guy hanging around outside your garage. January 2016

Food for Thought

by Barry Duncan

Grujo's Looking for some German food & beverage? Then check out Grujo's. They are located on East Emory Road at the corner of Dry Gap Pike in Knoxville, TN. If you're thirsty, then get ready for the 2-liter draught @ $18. I like the schnitzel, fried pork loin, with pomme frites. Add a little Jaeger, mushroom gravy, for a nice meal @ $10. The red smoked bratwurst is also a winner! They offer up stuffed pitas and wraps for $8. Be sure and try the pfannkuchen, German pancakes filled with Nutella & bananas or cinnamon cherries with cream, @ $4.50. You can check them out at www.Grujos.com or 865-859-9603. Go thirsty, my friend.

UNTIL WE EAT AGAIN, BIKER BARRY Jalapeno Bacon Cheddar Deviled Eggs .

Recipe Ingredients:

12 eggs 4 slices bacon 3 jalapeno peppers 1 cup finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/4 red onion, minced 2 Tbsp spicy brown mustard 1 pinch paprika, or as desired

Cooking Directions: Place eggs in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil, remove from heat, and let stand in hot water for 15 minutes. Remove eggs from hot water, cool under cold running water, & peel. Place bacon in large skillet; cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 mins. Drain bacon on paper towels; crumble when cool enough to handle. Remove seeds & stems from jalapenos; mince 1 pepper and slice remaining peppers into very thin strips; set aside. Cut eggs in half lengthwise; place yolks in a bowl. Mash egg yolks with a fork; stir in minced jalapeno, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, red onion & mustard. Place egg whites cut-side up on serving platter. Spoon yolk mixture into egg white halves; sprinkle with crumbled bacon & paprika.

Sound Advice from Your Attorney

T

here is a lot of traveling this time of year. You and your family are traveling to and from the store shopping, going out to eat with family, friends, and co-workers, and going to visit distant relatives. With so many people on the road, the more likely the unthinkable might happen: you or a family member gets into an accident. What do you do if the unthinkable happens? First off, if you are not seriously injured, turn your hazard lights on and if your vehicle is still operational, move it to a safe place, Marcos Garza out of the flow of traffic. This is not only important to keep you safe when you go to get out of your vehicle, but it also keeps other drivers safe who might stumble, or crash, into your accident scene. Secondly, if you're able to, be an upstanding person and check on the others involved, even if you are not at fault. As hard as it might be, it is very important to keep a cool and calm attitude. This is a very traumatic and upsetting situation, but being kind and courteous to everyone involved will go a long way in the ultimate resolution in your claim. Thirdly, calll 911. If you or someone else is injured, even if it appears relatively minor, it is imperative that EMS check you out. Something minor now, could develop into something more serious later. It is better to nip it in the bud instead of letting it sneak up and bite you later. Even if you or someone else aren't injured, it is still important to report the accident because an accident report is almost always necessary to help resolve any potential disputes that might arise in the future. Now be sure not to admit fault or point the blame at the others involved in the accident. The police will be sure to question everyone involved and any witnesses that might be around to objectively determine what happened and who is at fault. Also, as mentioned earlier, be courteous and respectful to the police and EMS who respond, your actions will go a long way and might even help you avoid an unwanted ticket. Fourth, trade and gather information. Get the name of the driver and any of the passengers. Trade insurance information and copy down the license plate number, along with the make and model of the vehicle. If there are any witnesses, get their contact information; you might need their help later to give their account of what happened. Also, be sure to get the name(s) and badge number(s) of the officer(s) that respond to your accident, this will make getting your accident report easier. Fifth, document the scene. Almost everyone with a cell phone has a camera on it, whether it's a fancy smartphone or a good ole reliable flip phone. Take pictures of the scene where the accident occurred, including any skid marks, hazards in the road, and each vehicle involved in the accident. Your insurance company will likely want these pictures to help settle your claim and in the event you have to sue or get sued the more documentation you have the better. Remembr, be careful when you're taking these pictures because you're likely still on the side of the road and other cars are driving by. Sixth, report the accident to your insurance company. You don't have to do this while waiting at the scene, but it is important to start your claim sooner rather than later. Starting your claims process will speed up your car getting fixed and put money back in your pocket for medical expenses you migh incur. What if you're out of state? Do everything above, but before you travel out-of-state familiarize yourself with the laws of that state. Each state is different and something legal in Tennessee might not be legal in another state, such as talking on your cell phone. Talking on your cell phone might effect who the police determine is at fault for the accident, it's best not to be at fault. No matter what, in state or out-of-state, remember to call your local at-home attorney after the accident. Your local attorney can guide you through the turmoil of having an accident, regardless of whether you're not at fault or at fault. If you're out of state, don't call an unknown attorney, call your local attorney and let him help you find someone who will look out for you and your family. Your local attorney will answer any questions you have, help guide you through the insurance process, and help you recover what your insurance won't get back for you.
