words from the publisher

Hey Folks!

One thing I usually comment about is the weather because weather plays a big part in riding opportunities. If it rains at a rally event, it is usually a bust unless the event organizer purchases rain insurance prior to the event. One event organizer I spoke with the other day did something I thought was a great idea when planning a date to hold an event. He looked at historical weather data to determine the optimum date with the least likely rain patterns. That event is the Party at the Peavine which will be held May 22-24 and a Fall event in August in Ringgold, GA. Southern Biker Magazine is proud to be the presenting sponsor of this event. Great things are planned for this event. See ad in this issue for details.

The big weather event going on as I write this month's letter is the big freeze happening in the southeastern U.S. We broke low temperature records that have been in place since 1885 for Knoxville, TN. Here in Madisonville, we have been without power and internet for five days, making it a challenge to produce a magazine, let alone survive what Mother Nature has dished out. She got our attention! Hopefully the power will be back on soon. Many others are still without power, too. The ice event caused a widespread power outage here and we experienced a huge tree limb (over a foot in diameter) that fell in the pasture next to the barn.Thankfully it didn't damage anything when it fell. Probably scared the horses pretty bad with the noise it made. We spent several days preparing our animals for the frigid weather by stocking up on feed, filling up water troughs, making sure water heater elements are in place for horses and chickens, putting up tarps around chicken coop to block the wind and around the horse stalls, filling horse stalls with shavings for extra fluffy bedding, stuffing hay into cracks and crevices to block more wind underneath stall walls, adding hay in chicken coops for warmth and turning on heat lamp in nest box. Our animals are very well cared for to say the least, because they are family and we love them dearly. We especially enjoy the chicken eggs! Maybe this spring we will have baby chickens. Everyone stay safe and warm!

2015 V-Twin Expo By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

D

uke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio played host to the 2015 V-Twin Expo and had our Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew in awe. Massive amounts of vendors from every corner of the V-Twin motorcycle industry came to flaunt their products. More people came out this year than last year’s expo to see what’s new on the market, but the numbers were still low compared to years past. But the buzz for the expo was indicating a return to prominence for the motorcycle industry. The feeling is, business is about to pick up! Vendors were busy the entire day with customers and people wanting to know about their products. Several bikes were on display but the one garnering the most attention by far was the hubless bagger built by Ballistic Cycles. Built with a 30” custom front wheel and its assembly, the guys at Ballistic Cycles added a hydraulic system to set it gently on the ground. Several familiar faces were there like Dave Perewitz and Jody Perewitz, my good friend and entertainer Jasmine Cain and

many other top executives from many different companies. At the Industry Welcome Party, awards were given in honor of the 2015 Industry Award winners. The 2015 Industry Leader Awards included J.A. Lacy orchestrated the merger of Tucker Cryakyn President Holger Mohr, Rocky/Biker’s Choice with MAG, a group Call Center Manager Jamie Nutzmann, & Director of Sales consisting of J&P Cycles, John Petta Motorcycle Superstore, Roland Sands Design, Vance & Hines, Mustang Seats and media outlets Motorcycle USA and Cycle News. Great American Motorcycle Show By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he North Atlanta Trade Center in Norcross, Georgia was the site for the 2015 Great American Motorcycle Show. Lots of vendors from every part of the motorcycle industry attended the event. Live music kept the crowd entertained as did the snake handler show sponsored by Steelhorse Law. The great assortment of custom bikes and paint jobs weren’t the only thing to see this year. Polaris’s new Slingshot was there along with Boss Hoss’s new designs. But the one garnering the most photo flashes was undoubtedly Choppers Inc. owner, Billy Lane. He’s back in the saddle and making custom bikes along with making the shows to let everyone see him and get autographs.

Honda Makes Its Mark, Producing Their 300-Millionth Motorcycle By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

S

ince 1949, for more than 60 years, Honda Motor Company, Ltd. has been making motorcycles for the entire world and now they have hit what some would have perceived as unattainable. They have produced their 300-millionth motorcycle at the company’s Kumamoto Factory in Japan and it just happened to be a Honda Gold Wing as Honda also celebrates the Gold Wing’s 40th Anniversary.

“This incredible milestone is the result of the millions of customers who have placed their trust in Honda and we would like to thank all of our customers, associates, dealers and community partners in North America for helping make it possible,” said Bob Gurga, Vice President and Manager of Motorcycle Division for American Honda. “Now, we are focused on the future and the ways that we can harness the challenging spirit of Honda associates to create new joy for Honda customers.”

olds. They took a beating but kept on motoring. In the mid 1960’s, Honda became the best-selling motorcycle brand in the U.S. and the world and they haven’t looked back. Since production started in 1979, Honda has manufactured more than five million power sports products in North America using global and domestically sourced parts. 1959 Honda Super Cub

was 98cc Dream Type-D. In 1958, Honda came out with the Super Cub 50. It would go onto become one of the mainstays for the giant motorcycle icon. They brought the Super Cub to the US in 1959 and to Canada in 1969. They have sold over 90 million of them worldwide. I knew it was a great motorcycle; it was mine and my cousin Alan Gracy’s first bikes as 5 and 6 year

With their motorcycle products (which were being produced in the US) had become leaders in the industry, Honda then branched into the automobile market production in the U.S. in 1982. Honda’s motto from the 60’s, “You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda”, still rings true today as globally Honda produces motorcycles, ATV’s and sideby-sides at 32 plants in 22 countries, including two plants in North America.

History: Honda began producing motorcycles in 1949. The first mass produced Honda

I mean the crowd was on their feet and cheering loud. That was great to hear and awesome to see Reed back winning. With the win tonight, Reed has control of the Duel in the Dome which awards a commemorative trophy to the top rider in points for the two events. Dungey extended his points lead to 25, and Canard moved into second place in season standings past Roczen, who finished 18th after yet another crash. 450SX Class Results: Atlanta 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

S

o you're a rider, a motorcyclist, a biker or whatever word you use to describe someone who loves life on two wheels. You have lots of miles under your belt and never give it a second thought when you throw a leg over and get moving. For me, it was all the same to ride from where I live (Daytona Beach) to Orlando or Sturgis, either alone or with lots of friends. It was all good. Then something happens to interrupt your normal pattern. The northerners call this "winter". Maybe you needed to take a break to care for a family member. Maybe your job took you to a place where you couldn't ride. Maybe you've had an accident. In my case, a medical situation took me off the road while I went through the necessary treatments and their side effects. Whatever the reason, you're now ready to get back to this delightful thing called life - life in the wind, that is. My tech has gone over my Fat Boy from stem to stern and I've been forgiven

Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

for leaving it sitting for so long. So why do I feel like a teenager on her first date? I want to ride, but...I know how much I love riding, but...do you ever feel intimidated by something that used to be second nature to you? Okay, here's my plan to combat all that junk that wants to slow me down. I'm asking two of my friends who've shared lots of road miles with me for help. They know how much I love to ride, but also know I'm a bit timid right now. We'lll start out in a parking lot practicing the maneuvers I already know how to do but haven't done in a while. My muscle memory will come back faster than I can say, "Let's ride!!!" Along with it will come the confidence I NEED to ride safely in traffic. We're planning a long weekend ride right after Daytona Bike Week. It's no secret to them that I'm still building up my endurance, so our riding days will be shorter than usual. They'll love, laugh and pray me through anything life can throw at me.

Between now and then I'm doing my best to eat well and get enough exercise. When the doctor told me radiation might leave me tired, he wasn't kidding. Months of napping every time I sat down haven't done my muscles any good at all and we all know the strength it requires to pull a bike off the side stand and stay with it through a day in the wind. I don't want to endure my rides - I want to enjoy them. Getting in shape is the first step. So, how about you? Will I see you in Sturgis this August? I hope so.

he Easyrider Bike Show Tour 2015 came to the East Coast and visited two states ready for the motorcycle season to begin. Both shows enlisted the gatherings from the TV show Sons of Anarchy, “Chibs”, the all girl dance team, the Perfect Angelz, the Rolling Thunder tribute bikes, bagger bike builder Paul Yaffe, musical bands and few extra items to throw into the mix to attract folks to the show.

Rifle scope cr osshairs. Pay ing RESPEC to Chris Kyl e & all other T s who put th lives on the eir line for our freedom.

The Charlotte show brought in some extra attendees by bringing in Rat Rods and old custom cars to the mix. Some were just downright kickin’. The biggest contributors to the show were definitely the motorcycles that people wanted to see and win trophies. A few of the bikes had brand new types of engineering and new creations for custom paint. One in particular came from Allen Burchell. His “Asphalt Assassin” that won 2015 Paul Yaffe Best of Show Award and created by the Bike Exchange and custom painted by Master Painter Chris Fox. “The rifle scope crosshairs on the tank were painted in honor of Chris Kyle and all others who put their lives on the line for our freedom”, said Burchell. “We had a great day at the Easyrider Show in Charlotte. It was about three times the size of the Nashville show”, Said KM Bee. The vendors still seemed fewer than from years past as did the crowds but that didn’t deter the folks that came out to enjoy a day in the motorcycle world.

LIMBitless Possibilities By Ursala Wachowiak, The B.R.O.A.D. ™

T

he Amp’d Rider Project (Feb 2015 Southern Biker Magazine) has given me more insight and education than I could have imagined when I first started. What was a heartfelt cause to share and enlighten others has become an extraordinary endeavor. I have interviewed over ten amputees that resumed their passion for riding motorcycles after losing their limbs, and many more interviews in the pipeline. In addition, several professionals have joined the mission of the Amp’d Rider Project. The YouTube series has received a great many subscribers and social media followers are intrigued with the information they are receiving. The stories of amputation range from illnesses to accidents and the amputees are very diverse in professions. Kendall Hill was on a Boy Scout excursion, watching his son repels for the first time. Like most parents, he wanted that perfect picture. He took just Kendall Hall one too many steps and the ledge gave way sending Kendall down a deep cliff. Being that the troop was in a somewhat remote location, it took over two hours for Kendall to get flown off to a hospital. A combination of injuries and time created the need to amputate part of his leg. He climbed out of that tragedy to not only be here for his children, but to ride again. Roger Chan has served in many professional and political roles during his life. He was a man that had earned a good living and had life in order so to speak, with a retirement and college fund for his kids. On his birthday, which was also Thanksgiving, he was Roger Chan attending a local giving project to help feed less fortunate folks. A motorist hit Roger and as he slid, trapped under his Indian, he felt his leg being ground off. He said, “…it was like putting your leg in a pencil sharpener.” Roger and his family discovered just how costly such a tragedy can be. Empting all the funds for he had saved for his family, Roger found himself starting over in more ways than just walking. He now owns Rolling Thunder Roadhouse in Texas and naturally, he rides again.

Erik Peterson of C. H. Martin Company is my current leg man in Georgia. Erik is a very attentive prosthetist that truly listens to the patient and goes well beyond common professional courtesy to ensure that I have all I need for the best quality of life. Erik was born premature and his femur Me & Erik was not fully developed at birth. His knee is only a few Peterson inches from his hip and his foot is smaller than it should be naturally. Though he is not an amputee, this birth defect means that Erik has been wearing prosthetics his whole life. As such, Erik can personally relate to the difficulties and trials that go with limb challenges. I have heard time and again from amputees that their prosthetist doesn’t understand them and often times they feel as if they are in ill-fitted prosthetics. Erik does not let a patient leave in pain or with a prosthetic that is less than a phenomenal fit. Dave and Becka were on a date in their fairly new relationship and enjoying a beautiful day of riding. In a flash, as many of us have heard before, a deer jumped into their path of travel. The destruction was devastating. Dave suffered many injuries including a partial leg amputation. Becka Becka & Dave Bledsoe suffered pretty severe ride into the future traumatic brain injury. For months these two endured surgeries and recovery, all the while remaining together as a couple which they said, “was the only way they could have made it through the ordeal.” Each of them helped the other with their weaknesses and built up each other’s strengths and their bond grew even stronger. Mr. and Mrs. Bledsoe now ride again and help extensively with the Patriot Guard in their area. Vicki Bishop headed to work on her motorcycle one morning like a thousand mornings before. She is a well-seasoned rider and really doesn’t remember exactly what went wrong. She only remembers watching her motorcycle cross the center line directly in front Vicki Bishop & her trike of a semi-truck. Though she was able to talk to first responders her memory of the incident is vague and she

had no idea that her leg was severed at the scene. Vicki had just started dating a guy when her crash occurred but he quickly became estranged. Vicki got back to living on her own and that’s when her boyfriend and her reunited. He helped Vicki back into her passion for riding and helped her regain her confidence and her determination to ride again. He also helped Vicki and another friend modify a trike so that she could get her knee back in the breeze. Yep, just one knee; she is an above knee amputee and thus a two wheeled bike was not conducive to her situation. Steve Chamberland, former pro-wrestler and leg amputee is a man for whom I am ever so thankful to have in my life. On a Memorial Day motorcycle ride, Steve lost part Me & Steve Chamberland of his leg when a motorist hit him and his passenger. As the years passed Steve wrestled professionally and started a construction company. But it wasn’t until a personal appearance with some of wrestling’s biggest names that he truly found his calling. Hearing of a young girl that lost her leg, Steve gathered his buddies together to raise money for the girl and as Jimmy Hart “Mouth of the South” tells it, “… you (Steve) lit up when you gave that little girl her leg.” From that gesture of caring and the work it took to raise those funds, Steve formed 50Legs.org, a charity based purely on donations. While I still lay in the hospital for my own accident, a friend of mine contacted Steve and explained my crash and lack of medical coverage. Steve reached out to offer me help from 50Legs.org so that I could get a prosthetic when the time came. I nearly choke on tears every time I think about what my life would be today if I had not received help. I would not have walked so soon, I would not have been able to travel in my truck and trailer through the country just 8 months after losing my leg, and I certainly would not have been able to ride a motorcycle again so soon. And thanks to Steve, his supporters, and 50Legs.org, I was able to get back to my passion which made me feel whole again. Ryan Hutchinson was a truck driver and making his scheduled route when something went terribly wrong with the truck Ryan Hutchinson and he crashed. Ryan’s arm was pinned and despite rescue and surgical (continued on page 27)

(continued from page 26)

efforts he became a left arm amputee. He is a man of many talents and amazing determination. Ryan began to modify his motorcycle because he wasn’t going to give up his passion. He regained his strength and fortitude to continue playing hockey, golf, and of course riding and working on motorcycles. Ryan has no hesitation in saying that his family and friends were a huge driving force in helping him recover and get on with living life to the fullest. Ryan now has a motorcycle related product in production that I cannot disclose but I will say that it is innovative and I for one anxiously await its release. Scott Shephard enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 18. The day before he was to report to basic training he and some buddies Scott Shephard had one last gathering. In the minds of young men, consequence does not always take precedence. After several alcohol beverages Scott climbed on the back seat of a motorcycle while his buddy prepared to drive them for a ‘short ride’. That ride was indeed short. They hit a guard-rail and Scott’s left arm was severed. He went through hell time and again through the years trying to cope with his circumstances. The self-destruction that took his arm continued until he was 27. It was then that he found

March, 2015

faith and began a college education. Though he rode a motorcycle throughout that time, it wasn’t until he had healed himself on the inside did he truly regain his passion for the ride. I personally enjoy speaking and debating with Scott, the philosopher. He is now planning new adventures somewhat similar to what I did with my truck, trailer, and bike. Donnie Huffman of Huffman Performance and Restoration in Florida shared with me his lifelong involvement with motorcycles. In a strange twist of fate, because of an accident and its Donnie Huffman settlement, Donnie’s Dad purchased his first Harley-Davidson dealership. Donnie has gone on to start his own shop and is a professional drag racer. Donnie has also done many modifications on several of Scott Shephard’s bikes. All in good fun, Donnie says of Scott, “…he’s a pain in the butt but I like being able to help him ride.” Donnie is one of those guys that were born to be an engineer / mechanic. He simply looks at a problem and sees a solution manifest. As I learned from Scott’s story and talking to Donnie, there is no hurdle you cannot overcome if you just put your mind and heart to it.

never gave up on themselves, I have learned a great deal and shared a lot of laughs. From the professionals that modify motorcycles and make their living in the medical world, I have learned what dedication it takes to serve others. And from the online followers, I have seen that folks really do care, they just don’t always understand a particular situation because it has not affected them directly. I have received a plethora of messages ranging from, “thank you for doing this” to “you and your project have given me the courage to try riding again.” It is my hope that this project will affect all types of people. Whether you are an amputee or a whole body person, this message will educate and inform. If you know or care for an amputee or other type of disabled person, you will understand better how to help. For those that are professionals, you will hear varied stories about how much we appreciate what you do. The introductory episode of the Amp’d Rider Project was publicized on January 26, 2015. The interviews continue and are publicized weekly on Monday. Should you desire to subscribe to The B.R.O.A.D. ™ YouTube channel you can find the full length interviews in the playlist entitled: Amp’d Rider Project. I cannot say how long this project will continue but as long as there is interest, I will do my best to keep putting my best foot forward for all of you. You can see these stories and more on my YouTube episodes at: YouTube: Amp’d Rider Project. For more information, go to: www.hdbroad.com.

The interviews I have conducted thus far have been nothing short of spectacular. From the amputees that

S

o you have spent the winter customizing your new bike (or trike...not that I am writing about anyone specific that might work in our firm...). You have the custom paint done, chrome fairings like you want them, and now it is time to put the exclamation point on your new toy with a custom LED Light kit so everyone can see your bike whether it's day or night. Over the past couple years, lighting kits have become more and more popular leading to clients, friends and fellow Southern Biker readers repeatedly coming to us asking the same question...is my lighting kit legal?

George Stein

Brian Caron

First off, when talking about lights, let's divert and quickly talk about headlights. All states in the southeast are consistent with regards to headlights. Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina and Georgia all require every motorcycle to have a working headlight, running day or night. Daytime running lights on a motorcycle are Marcos Garza mandatory throughout the southeast. This goes for brake lights as well. Red, functional brake lights are mandatory in all states in the south if you are riding on a state road.

Kim Antley Norred

Bike Info: 2001 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 Occupation: Tennessee Urology Associate Medical Assistant Hobbies/Interests: Been riding 1.5 years, enjoy riding in my spare time, going to the beach, shooting pool, wine tasting. I turned 50, bought a Harley, convertible and got a tattoo. I successfully completed the Dragon!

So now, let's move to the lighting kit that you want to put on your bike. States in the southeast are pretty consistent with regards to what you can and cannot do with lights. Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia specifically state that you cannot put any blue lights on your motorcycle. Whether they are stationary or flashing, blue lights are illegal. Now remember these statutes are not going to specify shades of blue. So, if you put a greenish blue lighting kit on your bike, although you may be able to win an argument with respect to the specific statute, and interpretation of the law, don't be surprised when you get pulled over and harassed over your lighting kit. Other colors to stay away from are red, white and Amber. State statutes in the southeast are pretty consistent with outlawing red, white and amber flashing, revolving or blinking lights. Georgia goes even further outlawing green flashing lights unless you have a permit or are driving an emergency vehicle. Now most states are specific with these colors stating they are illegal while flashing, blinking or revolving. So having a red or white light kit may be ok, as long as you are careful with how it works. Again, remember that each state is going to have specific laws with respect to what colors are legal, so before putting a light kit on your bike, make sure you check your local laws. Or, give us a call over at Steelhorse Law. As always, we are always happy to speak to all our Southern Biker friends and community and will be happy to check to make sure that you stay legal.
