words from the publisher

Hello Folks!

Hope this finds you doing well. It's hard to believe we are on the downhill side of 2016. It has been a great year and a challenging year at the same time.We are grateful for the important things in life and sometimes we lose sight of those things and complain when the unimportant things go wrong. Whenever that happens to my husband and I, we always try to look at the positive that came out of the negative. For example, our trip to Panama City Beach Harley-Davidson for the Sand and Sass Ladies Motorcycle Rally started out rough and got worse. We haul our bikes on a trailer because we carry booth tents, tables, chairs, magazines etc., for our booth set up. The truck brakes malfunctioned when we arrived to PCB and had to be fixed before we returned. A shout out to Wes at Pep Boys in PCB for taking care of our truck and going above and beyone to help us out. Next, my motorcycle quit on me as we were headed to dinner the first night there. Randy had to go back to hotel, get truck, hook up trailer and come pick my bike up and roll it on the trailer. Another shout out to Bryan at Southern Iron Kustoms for taking great care of my bike and get "Fluffy" running again. Then we are enjoying some riding and my husband's bike's shifter lever breaks.Yet another shout out to Bryan at Southern Iron Kustoms for taking care of my husband's bike and getting him back on the road. Then Randy got a case of food poisoning or a stomach virus we think. He was feeling rough but all better now. The good things that came out of this trip are that we met our new PCB rep in person, Julie Gardner and her boyfriend John, and we met Amber Rowe and her boyfriend Todd (Big Daddy) who is also our newest rep for the FL/GA/MS region. We enjoyed some great riding with some awesome ladies on the Sand and Sass rides and events. Read more about that event in this issue.

It’s a Revolution! By Smokin’ Joe Ball

S

cott Maddux, owner, Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson has a vision: Join Our Revolution – Let’s Ride. Part of this vison includes Revolutions Rides where the focus is motorcycle ownership and getting back to the basics of riding and having fun. These are Brown Bag rides, so be sure to bring food and beverage(s) to enjoy at the designated picnic spot for the ride. Each ride is an adventure taking you to scenic overlooks, points of interest and might even include some crooked and secret roads. Riding is emotional, and in the hectic world of today, remember how it feels to straddle your motorcycle and hit the back roads. It requires a clear head and focus, so leave your worries in the parking lot and let’s roll. For this Revolution Ride there are two routes. Scott led the longer ride, approximately 225 miles and Tim Rooney, Dragon Hog Chapter, led another shorter 152 mile ride. After some brief instructions and a summary of the ride, Scott headed out with a large group of motorcycles. Following Route 321 to Walland

we crossed the beautiful 19 miles of the Foothills Parkway to the junction with Hwy. 129, the famous “Dragon”, where we rode south, navigating the reputed 318 curves to arrive at Deal’s Gap. After a brief break at the store at

8 - Southern Biker Magazine

Deal’s Gap, the ride continued south on Route 28 through Stecoah, then to Almond and the junction of Routes 19/74. Turning west/ south on 19/74, we rode through Nantahala Gorge, watching the rafters enjoy splashing through the cool whitewater rapids. We continued to Topton and took Route 129 north to a fuel/food stop in Robbinsville. Leaving Robbinsville we wound our way up Route 143, the spectacular Cherohala Skyway, to the turnoff for Joyce Kilmer. Crossing the intersection with Horse Creek Campground and the actual Joyce Kilmer trails, up the mountain we went for several miles until the cul-de-sac halted our motorcycling, and we parked, took our provisions and walked out the boardwalk for a fine picnic at the Maple Springs Overlook. What a stunning view of our grand Smoky Mountains!

After lunch we rode back down the mountain, turned left through Horse Creek for a few miles and re-joined Route 129 north. Rain, which had loomed over us for a while, finally could hold off no longer, and showered us on the Dragon. At the junction with the Foothills Parkway, small groups of riders began to disperse in different directions to their respective homes and/or obligations.

Tim’s ride left the Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson with 7 riders following Route 321 to Old Glory/ Big Springs Rd over to Meadow Rd, continuing on Sheets Hollow to Brooks, and then Hwy 95 to Jackson Ferry, turning onto East Coast Tellico Pkwy to US 411. Following US 411 to the first stop at the Weigel’s at Hwy 72. At the Weigel’s, three more riders joined the group. Leaving Weigel’s, we rode up Hwy 72 to Hwy 322 through Sweetwater, picking up Hwy 68 through the Watts Bar area, Spring City, Grand View over to Firetower Rd, with lunch at Piney (continued on page 10)

Falls. At the falls the water was low so they were able to eat lunch on the rocks that are normally in the river. From Piney Falls the group rode to the top of Mt. Roosevelt using Firetower Rd, with a little jog on Hwy 68, turning at Possum & Wassum onto Possum Trot Rd to Dogwood Rd, then made a left on US 70 to another Firetower Rd that took us to the top of Mt. Roosevelt. The top of Mt. Roosevelt overlooks Rockwood and the valley where you can see the power plant at Kingston. This

view is a must for everyone, and it is easy access to the top with all paved roads. Leaving Mt. Roosevelt, backtracking Firetower Rd to US 70 to the US 27 junction, we stopped at the Marathon in Rockwood for water and ice cream. From here, US 27 to US 70 again to Kingston, where Anne Caulfield took the lead because she knows how to get around some of the traffic in Lenoir City. She led us on US 70 to Old Hwy 95 that took us past all the stop lights to US 11, just 8 blocks from US 321. We continued on US 321 across the Tennessee River, back to SMH-D for a total of 152 miles.

beauty on winding roads with fine friends. In the words of Richard Hilten, “We all deserve to seize the day! I can think of no better way to spend a day!”

See you on the next Revolution Ride. *Route summary sources: Richard Hilten and Tim Rooney.

Amazing Health Benefits More Reasons to Ride

N

ature is a healing agent. That's why people go to the mountains, the sea or the country when they are in need of healing. And it's one of the great things riding does for us - it gets us out in the sights, sounds and smells of nature. Plus, while you're enjoying the ride, you are also getting amazing amounts of fresh oxygen - way more than you would get in your airconditioned living room with all the windows closed, sitting on the couch watching TV. Out in the open air and sunshine (sometimes), you also get some extra Vitamin D, which is great for lowering blood pressure, calcium absorption, which helps bones and teeth,

Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

regulates your immune system, stimulates the pancreas to make insulin, and helps with improving resistance to a number of diseases. Some people take extra supplements, all you have to do is go for a ride on a pretty day.

It also causes you to exercise muscles that just don't get used in your recliner. Your neck muscles are strengthened every time you wear a helmet, and then add the wind factor. You use leg muscles swinging your leg over to get on your bike, and leg muscles to hold it up. Arm muscles are used as you corner and simply have your arms on the bars for a long period of time. It may not be cardio unless you're having to push your bike, but it requires more physical activity

than working on a computer or driving in a car. Also, the longer you ride, the more physical benefits you'll receive. It's also a great place to let all the thoughts and worries go, because your mind is focused on the rhythm of the ride. Stress is one of the major causes of all disease. So, if you can relieve stress by riding, guess what? You're getting healthier by the mile. It's a great reminder to relax and enjoy the journey - not just the bike ride, but your life ride. I always say there's never a wrong road on a motorcycle, because if you're enjoying the ride - every road is the right one. I've found some of the best rides of my life with a wrong turn and I've found some of the best people and experiences of my life in unplanned or unexpected circumstances. You usually don't meet uptight bikers and if you do, they probably haven't been riding for long. So, the next time you swing your leg over your bike, do it with the satisfaction that riding really is good for you.

The 2017 Honda CRF450RX… It’s Coming! By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

I

t amazes me that technology continues to advance and when it does, we have to give a shout out. Dirt bike racing, Supercross, motocross, etc. is a huge sport and also one of the largest markets in America for motorcycle sales. Well, Honda has re-upped their commitment to the sports, their riders and their market share by producing a totally new motocross bike; the likes of which have not been seen in the last 10 years. The new 2017 Honda CRF450RX from top to bottom is new. It is being touted as the “Next Big Thing” to influence the market and its competition. Using the same engine and frame package as its new Supercross sister model, the 2017 CRF450R, this RX is going to be the ultimate in endurance racing, as it is race ready. It will be the most stable handling 450 that Honda has produced. Couple that with more comfort and long riding time and you get the most enjoyable day riding you will have… off-road. I’m going to give you the skinny on this machine since it’s not available until October and not destined to hit the dealers’ showrooms until December of this year. The New Tech: The 18-inch rear wheel was a definite must and Honda included Dunlop Geomax AT81 RC, the ultimate in offroad riding and gives you that multipurpose performance you need to stay in front of the pack. The 449cc engine has a special flywheel tune for off-road use for smoother delivery and it is a more tractable motor. It comes together for a better long ride through the woods and made easier to accomplish with the 2.2 gallon gas tank.

The CRF450RX uses the seventh generation CRF twin spar aluminum beam frame with improved turning performance, front-end stability and traction. Adding softer suspension and a higher tooth sprocket gives the rider a better feel with more torque and speed through the turns, dirt and hill climbing ability. Honda’s EMSB puts instant engine character adaptability at the rider’s command. With the machine stopped, and engine at idle, a simple press and hold of the button for just under a second lets you select the next map in sequence. The LED lit-up button signals which mode you are in. Mode 1 is the base map and provides the most linearity in throttle response, making the engine’s power much more usable in a wide range of conditions. Mode 2 tones down engine performance (especially useful for a tired rider) while Mode 3 delivers the power in the most responsive way – with a delivery similar to the standard mapping (Mode 1) of the CRF450R. The CRF450RX’s dual exhaust system is compact and positioned closer and lower in the frame’s center to take weight off the rear end and bring more mass to the bike’s center for superior handling. Along with having electric and kickstart abilities, Honda also added a kickstand! No more leaning the bike on a tree when you take a break. Honda is serious about its off-road motorcycles and using the racing world to learn more and develop better products. When the RX arrives, we hope to get a test ride on this new industry altering machine and give a more up to date review on the ride. But until then, we can just dream. (continued on page 16)

Harley-Davidson Unveils New Milwaukee-Eight Engine

T

he veil has been lifted and HarleyDavidson introduced its newest Big Twin in the past 80 years (ninth big twin in the company’s history). HarleyDavidson is known for giving its engines symbolic names like Shovel Head, Twin Cam, Evolution, Pan Head and Knucklehead; now comes the engine that will fuel the motor company into the foreseeable future, the Milwaukee-Eight. So named because it features four valves per head. The 2017 touring Street Glides, Road Glides, the Electra Glide Ultra Classic, and Freewheeler trikes will receive the engines first, but it’s a good bet that other models will closely follow them. A Twin-Cooled version with liquid-cooled cylinder heads and radiators will power Ultra Limited models, the Road Glide Ultra, and Tri Glide models. With a displacement of 107ci (1,750cc) or 114ci (1,870cc), this Milwaukee-Eight engine produces 10 percent more torque with the four-valve cylinder heads offering 50 percent more intake and exhaust flow capacity than previous year models. The CVOs will be getting a roaring 114 cu. in. (1868 cc). H-D cruisers will retain their Twin Cam 103 V-twin power-plant. A few models will also retain the Twin Cam 110 engine. Other features added include dual spark plugs, new charging system, new fly wheels, single cam with hydraulic tension chain drive and better fuel economy. Harley-Davidson says the new engine cancels 75% of primary vibration at idle and the new heat management system will improve rider and passenger comfort. For the first time in a rubber-mounted Big Twin, a single counter-rotating internal balancer is used to cancel 75% of the engine’s primary shaking force.

fuel-efficient, and highly reliable. With the new emissions regulations like the Euro IV standard in the European Union coming into effect on January 1, 2017, this engine should make the cut very easily. The other goal is a trend visible across the vehicle industry—to achieve world-class “ride feeling” through chassis, suspension, and driveline refinement. The new models will also have new tech added to their designs (see your local H-D dealer and schedule a test ride). Customer research, covering 1,000 riders in seven cities, was distilled into “The Voice of the Customer,” telling The Motor Company that riders want more power for two-up riding and more back-road agility. They want the bike to fit more sizes of people. They want cooler operation. I believe H-D has addressed and answered all these concerns with the new engine and models. “It’s the heart, soul, and sound that connects to the brand’s millions of fans around the world. All Big Twins have been designed to satisfy The Faithful, but perhaps more than any Big Twin before; the MilwaukeeEight is designed and refined to capture a broader audience. If ever an engine inspired religious fervor, this is it. Did we just hear a hallelujah”, said Yahoo news. H-D is planning to unveil the model year 2017 line-up to the general public through a series of dealership open house events on 23 September.

“These are the most powerful, most responsive and most comfortable touring motorcycles ever offered by HarleyDavidson,” said Scott Miller, HarleyDavidson vice president of styling and product development strategy. The new eight-valve engine seeks two broad goals. One is to make greater power and torque while being emissions-compliant, September 2016

Sand & Sass, And Everything Nice...For the Ladies By Ms Mag Man, Kristin Gracy

T

he Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew was present in full force at the inaugural Sand & Sass Ladies Motorcycle Rally in Panama City Beach, Florida…and it was just for ladies. Hosted by Panama City Beach Harley-Davidson, the fourday event was packed full of rides, entertainment, vendors and lots of great fun with other like-minded female riders like myself. The kick-off started Thursday at PCB H-D with vendors and a bike night, then ventured to Spinnaker Beach Club on the beach for a tremendous kick-off day! Erik Estrada from CHiPS made a guest appearance and photo op with the ladies. Day two brought us a ride to the Outpost, escorted by the Thunder Angels, where I met some new, amazing friends. The Men of Harley Fashion Show, followed by a bike parade to Spinnakers for a Leather & Lace Challenge with a 3 course dinner, rounded out a packed day of events and socializing with some awesome women! Day three was more great riding with a Forgotten Coast Ride with some beautiful scenery. We also were treated to a “Men of Harley” bike wash and several ladies enjoyed “watching” their bikes being washed in the hot sun (wink). Besides the Pool Party at Runaway Bay, it was also the finals of the bike show, and those awesome handmade trophies were amazing! The Heart Tribute Band “Barracuda” wrapped up the day with some great music and entertainment.

20 - Southern Biker Magazine

The final day on Sunday was time to pack up and head home, but not before a Champagne Brunch at Spinnakers featuring “From Bessie to Maggie,” an historical overview of female riders. It was hot, but the breeze off the ocean and just being at the beach beats a good day inland any day. This was an outstanding event for ladies, and we hope to see more events in the future that cater to the female motorcycle rider! Marta Rose and her staff at Harley-Davidson of Panama City Beach did an outstanding job! Thank you for all your hard work! We look forward to the next event!

h, Tennessee – a land rich in scenic splendors you cannot find in a book… Where Southern history lives on in the tangible silence of long-ago battlefields and primeval valleys framed by tectonic plate created mountains extend like ocean waves to far-flung horizons. Winding roads which beckon visitors to this region are steeped in legend laced with scenic delights and flavored by its people and tradition. We’re motorcycling out of Cookeville, a right biker friendly mid-Tennessee town known for nearby waterfalls, sparking lakes and superb food; Blackened swordfish at Crawdaddy’s West Side Grill; grilled Atlantic salmon at 7 Senses Food and Cheer, both on Broad Street adjacent downtown’s must see historic railroad depot museum and ghost-of-the-past 1913 Baldwin steam locomotive. Motorcycling is a popular economic asset to Tennessee tourism. 2,700 riders from 37 states and three foreign countries attended Cookeville’s 2015 H.O.G. Rally - just named to host the FIRST regional Southern Backroads H.O.G. Rally - July 11-15 2017 – so I’m here to explore country roads on a rental Harley-Davidson. Parts Manager Dylan Plush banks his HarleyDavidson Ultra Classic 103 hard right. I’m right astern on a sleek XL 1200 cc Sportster, a gaggle of riders hot on my tail, as we “Carve the Cumberland” scenic backroads. Throttling back, I fan the clutch-lever; down-shift two gears ; engine back-pressure cuts speed…exhaust snarling GRRRrrr….down a steep Z-turn; dazzling sunshine gives way to woodland darkness where even the temperature drops. Thrilling to the exhilaration of wind-in–the-face rush only motorcycling and open-cockpit flying offer we thunder on. Epileptic squirrels dart for cover, indifferent horses raise heads, corn fields, silos, barns and farms framed by flinty dry river beds zoom past; up and down bendswinging roads with more twists than a politician’s tongue, in and out majestic hollows, blurred glimpses of pastoral landscapes - Jasus, what fun! Country roads hereabouts are as challenging as any ridden in my native Scotland; mind you a wee bit slower-paced. Hell,

Southern Biker Magazine - 33

(continued from page 20) machines in for servicing, repairs, or displayed on the used sale floor - I got to ride all those legends. Conniving some coveted dream home for “road testing” weekends, well that’s what we told the bemused boss who knew we only wanted to RIDE. Comparing notes riding a Harley Sportster; riding a Yank machine is indeed a different style from Brit bikes. I found the Sportster enjoyable, lots of throttle where needed, nice handling on steep corners, signature tune exhaust note (patented?) rasping in my wake. We rode a couple of hundred enjoyable miles. I wouldn’t mind owning one. “I RAN OUT OF TALENT…” – fallen rider to ambulance man. Apart from riding Tennessee byways, I’m also looking for whiskey distilleries. I write about the stuff. Following enlightened changes in Federal, state, and local liquor laws, Tennessee boasts 33 distilleries, at least. SHORT MOUNTAIN ‘SHINE – outlaw to legal! We roar on towards Woodbury in search of Short Mountain Distillery (opened 2010). I’m here to taste – not drink - some 110-proof kosher Organic Shine Tennessee Moonshine, distilled from know-how passed down by legends of yesteryear. Robust flavor, remarkable but not over the top heat - Nice! Next I savored Short’s 60-proof Prohibition Tea, a dark colored corn based moonshine cocktail my granny - whose amazing liver is preserved in Edinburgh Castle - would have loved. She taught me how to spell GLASGOW; Granny Likes A Small Glass Of Whisky – it wasn’t considered child abuse back then. Out back of the mash house an old still catches my eye. Nosing the Sportster down a gravel track and boot the side stand down. Hmm, I’ve seen this type before in illicit action – won’t say where! Proprietor Billy Kaufmann tells me “It was operated by moonshiners Ronald Lawson and Ricky Estes, real life local legends, whose whiskey recipes go back long before Prohibition…they ‘went legal’ when we went into business.” That old still blew up years back, while Ricky was working a batch. He spent a couple of months in the hospital with third degree burns. Smelling of mash when it arrived, it didn’t pause for a day’s break from making illegal hooch to going legit. “We don’t use it anymore, been repaired too many times to be pure copper and safe.” Probably older than 35 years, this type still, if it worked well, was usually traded or sold so had multiple owners. Kaufmann reverse engineered a copy of the old still, only a little bigger and welded with proper copper with silver filler. “It only makes one type of moonshine, Shiner’s Select, rendering a taste only possible because of the ol’ pot still design.” For fun they fire up the old still for special occasions running water through it - Ricky calls it “moon water. Short Distillery makes a pleasant stop, great to relax on their expansive woodland view verandah. H. CLARK DISTILLING-Riding on to Franklin… Bikes parked outside a 200 year old grain barn in the small Tennessee hamlet of Thompson’s Station; I see a lovely 400 liter Alambic-style copper still made by Hoga, out of Portugal, I’m sharing a sample of Heath Clark’s interesting 80-proof Tennessee Black & Tan whiskey with himself; robust, oatmealy “stouty” – it’s a throwback to Heath’s college days and travels through Scotland’s whisky country, York, England, where oatmeal stout ale reigns supreme. Abandoning corn for his whiskey, he looked to Scotland for a malt-based whisky which yielded smooth unaged whiskey which didn’t stand out the way he envisioned, so he plumbed his recollections of the Samuel Smith Brewery in York for inspiration. “The roundness of their oatmeal stout ale made it a favorite beer of mine, leading me to add oats and chocolate malt to our malt whiskey mash. Distilled twice and aged in both new and used oak barrels which tan the whiskey over time, Tennessee Black & Tan delivers a well-rounded whiskey of rich oat and maltiness with subtle hints of vanilla, chocolate and smoke. 100% grain, it’s released “unaged” as H Clark Distillery’s “New Whiskey.” They produce a fine Tennessee Gin too, ideal for summer chillin’ and sippin’.

Sound Advice from Your Attorney Expungement, what can it do for me?

H

ave you ever been arrested or given a citation that you had to appear in court about, something more than a speeding ticket? A few examples are: public intoxication, due care, reckless driving, simple possession, or vandalism. If so, you may be eligible to have your record expunged under Marcos Garza Tennessee law if the offense occurred in Tennessee. Many people by mistake, believe that an old dismissed charge will not show up on their record because it is old or was dismissed. This is usually incorrect because the initial record of arrest still remains forever. Often with only a small amount of work, your complete criminal history can be totally free of evidence of a prior "run-in" with the law. What is expungement? It is a process by which dismissals, diversions and some convictions can be erased from your public record. This means that an eligible offense will not show on a background check. How your case was resolvd is important! Were all or some of your charges dismissed, were you placed on diversion, or were you convicted? Under all of these scenarios, you may be eligible for an expungement. If your charges were dismissed, you are almost certainly eligible for an expungement. Dismissal occurs when the State decides not to prosecute the case against you or the State and you enter an agreement that results in the charge being dismissed. If you fit into this category, you are almost guaranteed to be eligible for an expungement. If you were placed on pretrial or judicial diversion and successfully complete it, you may be eligible for expungement In a nutshel, diversion allows you to avoid a conviction attaching to your record if you complete all of the terms of the program. After the completion of the program for a small fee paid to the government, the charge is eligible for expungement from your record. The benefit is that your record is clean after the expungement is completed. Diversions are expungeable in nearly all circumstances. It is important to speak with an attorney prior to accepting any diversion offers to determine if it is eligible for expungement. What if you were convicted of a crime? You may still be eligible for an expungement. The Tennessee legislature has made most misdemeanor offenses and some felonies eligible for expungement. In order to qualify, you must only have one conviction on your record and the legislature must have made that conviction eligible for expungement. You may apply to have this charge expunged. You have to pay the petition-filing fee and get approved by the district attorney and judge. In some cases, there may have to be a hearing. The benefits of an expungement are that your record could be cleaned up or even completely eliminated, depending on your situation. A clean record makes you more appealing to employers, landlords, educational institutions, folks considering you for prosecution, and more. If you have had charges dismissed, been on diversion, or even been convicted of a crime, you should talk to a criminal defense attorney about whether your charges are eligible for expungement. The process is inexpensive and can have a drastic effect on your life.
