words from the publisher

Hello Folks, Hope you all had a great view of the eclipse. It was a very historic and memorable time for many who witnessed this amazing celestial display. To see the day turn to night was pretty impressive. Our place happened to be located within the 100% totality and for two and a half minutes, everything was dark. We invited friends and family over to witness the spectacle. We had motorcycle friends from Middle & East Tennessee, Georgia and a couple folks from Ohio who are building a house near us to show up for the event. Every city in a 25 square mile was charging to park; we were free for friends and family. With chairs and tent and beverages, we hiked (or drove the Jeep or 4wheeler) to the top of our hill for optimum viewing. Our three horses were very confused about all these people in their pasture but curiosity got the best of them and they greeted our visitors. They checked everything out, looking for treats, then went back to grazing (I think one of the horses helped themselves to a cold beverage). As the light began to dim, the horses took off for the barn, our rooster started crowing, the hens headed for the chicken coop and the cicadas started singing loudly. The animals and insects seemed a little confused. Watching the moon pass in front of the sun was amazing as was the diamond ring that appeared as the moon left the sun. So many interesting and memorable pieces of this event and the new friends we added to our circle will be cherished for a long time. Many people chose to ride their motorcycles during the eclipse or ride horses. If you have any photos to share from your eclipse event, feel free to share them on Facebook: Southern Biker Magazine and "Like Us" while you are there. We'll might make a special Eclipse page to commerate the event.

Harley-Davidson’s New 2018 Baggers By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

H

arley-Davidson has hit the ground roaring with their new 2018 motorcycle line-ups. The bagger class are the first for us to showcase as they are some of the most popular motorcycles on the planet. The CVO tradition continues in 2018 with the CVO Limited, the CVO Street Glide and the CVO Road Glide models. Touting the largest stock engine displacement ever offered by Harley, all three models will have the Screamin’ Eagle MilwaukeeEight engine in a new 117-cubicinch engine. These will come fully customized from the factory too, like the advanced integrated communication technology Bluetooth headsets where riders can easily communicate with their passenger and other riders. The 2018 CVO Street Glidexx comes with an extensive list of customized features including Talon Wheels and rotors. It also comes with the top-of-the-line 6.5GT BOOM! Box Infotainment system with Stage II speakers that will pump 900 watts of your favorite sounds.

The 2018 CVO Road Glide kicks off with a new design and paint schemes. Included with all the other customizations is a factory installed 21-inch Knockout front wheel for touring models from HarleyDavidson. It too, gets the 6.5GT BOOM! Infotainment System. 2018 Street Glide CVO The 2018 CVO Limited is the one I’ve been anxiously waiting to see personally. This is truly “THE” ultimate touring machine and it is loaded with options. Harley spared no energy in putting best-inclass power, infotainment, showwinning paint and premium rider and passenger comfort into this motorcycle. Powered by the all-new 2018 Road Glide CVO Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 117 (1923cc) engine, it has the torque and power you will ever want in a touring machine. Your ride and enjoyment has never been more comfortable with HD’s new dual bending valve front suspension, emulsion rear suspension and Reflex linked Brembo brakes with ABS. The heated seats come with custom stitching and matching backrest for both rider and passenger. (continued on page 10)

New Street Glide Special and Road Glide Special Models The 2018 Special units are added to the Street Glide and Road Glide motorcycles. Both will have the MilwaukeeEight 107 (1746cc) powerplant and comes with well thought out customizations from the factory. Both will come with 19” front and 18” rear Talon wheels, lots of black instead of chrome, Reflex linked Brembo brakes with ABS and the Harley-Davidson Smart Security System are standard equipment. Other noticeable inclusions are slimmer primary drive cover and a low-profile air cleaner cover for improved rider legroom and an easier reach to the ground for many riders. Included on both will also be the 2018 Road Glice Special Standard BOOM! Box 6.5GT Touchscreen Infotainment System. “Our custom bagger owners love to roll up to their favorite hangouts and show off their bikes,” said Harley-Davidson Manager of Product Portfolio, Paul James. “But we know it’s also important for them to be able to hit the open road in comfort and style. These new hot rod baggers are the epitome of capable touring bikes that look cool and ride better than ever.” They are arriving at dealers now so get yours today and enjoy “All for Freedom and Freedom for All.”

The Tellico Bike Rally Turns 10 By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

he 10th Anniversary of any event is always special and brings out more folks that help celebrate the event. This year was no exception for the 10th Anniversary of the Tellico Bike Rally. The rains came and went but most of the days were overcast and cool temps which made for a great bike rally. Over 20 vendors came to help take care of all the rally goers’ needs, no matter what they were.

T

The Wobble Wagon was bringing folks from across the creek to the main stage but to me, it seemed to have its own party all by itself; live music and cold beverages with about 20 folks on it most of the time. The fire fighters from Georgia always have a great time especially when the bands are playing in the Mountain Saloon; it’s where all the action takes place. This year the bands were The Crew, the Rebel Mountain Band, John Gilmore and headlining this 10th anniversary party was the Matthew Hickey Band.

The bike games brought the best… and the worst in some folks but the laughter and a good time was had by everyone. Mayor Dickie of Dickieville even invited the Brown’s across the walking bridge to see his township after the wet t-shirt contest. Next year’s event is already getting bigger and better with new sponsors coming on board. Mick, Wayne and Mike and their entire staff are ready to get this next decade of Tellico Bike Rally going. You’re always welcome to get your spot early, just ask one of the guys and they’ll get it booked. See you next year!

The Knoxville Harley-Davidson Bike Show with master MC, JD Vincent had everyone spit shinning their hogs to win those awesome trophies. The 5th Annual Southern Biker Magazine Catch & Release Fishing Tournament drew a nice crowd of bikers with fishing poles and ol’ Galgo (Joe McNabb) dispersed the trophies in front of the crowd. The Gate Keeper Willie even got to present the top trophy to his buddy and still fishing champion, Dan “The Man” Adams.

World-Famous Sturgis Celebrates 77th Rally By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy turgis is one of those mega bike events thousands of people look forward to each year. Most people put it on their bucket list to make sure they go at least once in their lifetime. The tenday motorcycle rally boasts tremendous bands, scenic rides, industry unveils and top entertainment for the thousands of attendees.

S

Set in iconic Western South Dakota, this year’s rally showed a small increase in traffic over last year (DOT data showed an estimated 376,000 vehicles compared to less than 360,000 in 2016). One big advantage this year was the predicted mild weather during the event’s duration. With the weather great, every place was hoppin’ including the famed Legendary Buffalo Chip. Our SBMag Road Crew always make this one their stops. This year the Chip featured Ozzy Osborne, Lynard Skynard, Blackberry Smoke, the Doobie Brothers, RATT and Blue Oyster Cult. And that’s just one place to see musical entertainment around Sturgis. My good friend Jasmine Caine also made her vocals heard at Sturgis. Full Throttle Saloon is making a big comeback after burning to the ground two years ago. Tennessee native, Michael Ballard is making it happen again! Things to ride to and see here are just way too many to list: The Legends Ride, the Biker Belles Ride, Mount Rushmore

and Crazy Horse photo-ops, bike shows every day and famous builders make their rounds to see their fans. Our Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew members were there taking in all that Sturgis had to offer. The 77th was larger than expected and a good time was had by all. If this isn’t on your bucket list, then you must be a passenger in a car. John Stanton, a first-time attendee said, “I’ve been wanting to ride to Sturgis for a long time, but it never seemed to be able to happen. This year, my buddies were going and I made this trip happen. What a great time we’ve had and I’ve gotten to do something I may never get to do again.” He went on to say, “Seeing these great sites, doing all this riding and meeting new friends… I’m just trying to take it all in at once.” I made my trip in the 1980’s when there weren’t so many out-of-town campgrounds and other things to do. Sturgis is one of those events you need to put on your bucket list. It’s worth the ride!

Zoe’s Ride By Liz Cunningham oe Adams was diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome, a metabolic disorder that causes brain damage in 2016. Most individuals with this disorder never reach adulthood. Zoe’s medical condition is already deteriorating and will soon confine her to a wheelchair as her brain will be the first thing affected.

Z

Constance Jones, “Mama C” to the biking community, put together a motorcycle ride to raise money for Zoe and her needs and the bikers came to help. “We raise money for the family and what the family needs, what the child needs, and I keep up with that family like they’re my own children”, said Constance. “… I don›t want to go through her life and say, ‹wow I wish I would have done that, maybe it would have made a difference’… I want to do anything that makes a difference”, said Zoe’s mother Kim Adams. The next ride will be during Biketoberfest and donations can be made at gofundme.com/zoesjourneySS.

M-O-T-O-R-C-Y-C-L-E Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc. M achine – When you think about it, a motorcycle is an amazing machine; it’s aerodynamic, a two-wheel wonder, there’s nothing else that’s comparable, a sense of pure power, and one of the most compacted packages of machinery, technology and design that there is. They keep their basic expression while continuing to advance in technology. And as often called, they are an iron horse and as we saddle up, they can take us to great adventures and lands unknown. O pen - The joys of the open road taking you to places you’ve never been. The rhythm of the road that relaxes you while you experience the world around you with all your senses. T ogetherness – The comradery of riding in a pack or even with one other rider or riding alone and meeting another rider at

a gas station or restaurant creates instant connection. It’s a world-wide club with no membership fee but can create feelings of belonging no matter where you are. O ne of a Kind – You can express your own individuality through the type of bike you ride, customization, gear, and how and where you ride. R oar – The amazing sound of the roar of the engine; the sense of power. The pipes that say, “Hey world, hear my ROAR! And yes, I believe loud pipes save lives! C hocolate – They are better than chocolate for serotonin, dopamine and all of the good neurotransmitters we need. (And you don’t gain weight!) Just seeing if you were paying attention. Y our - Your bike is your bike. It fits you. It starts to become one with you once you’ve ridden it enough. You know your clutch, your brakes, the handling, cornering, how it starts and all of its quirks. Some of us women have names for our bikes. Mine is called FIERCE.

C ruising – Seeing and experiencing our beautiful nation in ways that can only be done on bike; a sunrise on A!A driving the coast of Florida, incredible fall foliage riding the Blue Ridge Parkway, breathtaking views traveling through the Rockies or Sierras, watching a sunset winding down Highway 1 in California and all the areas in between. L etting Go – Riding is also a great way of casting your cares to the wind. Letting go of everything that contains you – like offices, houses, cars, etc., and tasting FREEDOM! E qualizing – I think one of the reasons women love to ride is the fact that if we are on the same size bike or a bigger – the guy riding next to us doesn’t have any more power than we do. Sometimes we may not have the same physical strength but we can have the same cubic inches or horsepower. (Or more!) And that’s how we spell MOTORCYCLE!
