WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER

Hello Riders,

Sturgis is finally in the books and lots of good memories were made by our SBMag Road Crew. They'll be sharing stories and photos in the next issue. We know there are always some unfortunate accidents coming home from Sturgis (or any event), but we hope everyone got home safe.

One of our SBMag Road Crew had an extended trip out West and ended up crashing. He contacted my husband from the hospital (broke ribs and more) and before you could shake a stick, Randy was packed and our neighbor Nick repacked the bearings on his trailer for Randy to bring our crew member home along with his bike. Prior to leaving the next morning, Randy discussed options with our crew member and the decision was made to fly or take a Greyhound bus home and have the bike shipped home. going to be quicker and less expensive (not to mention the six days of travel time).

This is a testament of what we believe riders should do for other riders. Friends will do whatever is needed when friends need help, especially when one is injured. This is just another scenario as to why we participate in benefit rides and help others less fortunate or have unmet needs. It's what we do; realize your friends are your family. They are who we count on the most, the older we get. Be thankful and let your friends know how much you mean to them. If you think of them that much, I promise they think as much about you also. September is coming up along with several events like Cherokee Blue Ridge Run in Cherokee NC. Make sure to get out there with friends and make the best memories of a lifetime. “Keep Your Knees In The Breeze!”© Kristin “Ms. Mag Man” Gracy Southern Biker Magazine is published monthly and NO reproduction of content is permitted without Publisher’s prior written approval. The Tellico BIKE RALLY XI By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

ellico Bike Rally turned 11 years old and is still drawing the crowds with great live entertainment, vendors, games, contests, the bike burnout pit, a bike show, a fishing tournament and even a bikini Duck Race. Folks came from all over to take part in this awesome event including one couple from Texas. The weather was hot but the creek that flows down the middle of the campground was cool and usually full of sun worshipers. Hot bands that performed for the weekend were Phoenix Rising, Hillbilly Jedi, The Will Sheppard Band and the Temper Evans Band. John Gilmore kept the acoustic music going in the Mountain Saloon every day and all day. The biker games were stacked with competitive folks and a few funny instances, too. The Hill Climb demonstration was put on by Hugo Moto riding their builds of Scramblers based on Harley-Davidson Sportster. All hook-up and no problem climbing those tough mountain hills. The SBMag Fishing Tournament drew a big crowd as did the Bikini Duck Race. This year, our two infamous fishing competitors took a cast at each other. Damnit Dan Adams lost out this year to Gate Keeper Willy so he presented Willy with his trophies. But both of them lost out 1st place for biggest and most fish to a new contestant Sam Leonard so both of them presented Sam his trophies. The Wobble Wagon was bringing folks from across the creek to the main stage, the vendor area and the Mountain Saloon. The bike games had a new MC from Knoxville Harley-Davidson; DJ Longarm Loveday. He kept folks laughing and tunes going all day. Next year’s event is already getting planned so mark your calendars for this one. You won’t want to miss it. Mick, Wayne and Mike and their entire staff promise you a great time. You’re always welcome to get your spot early, just ask one of the guys and they’ll get it booked. See you next year!

HARLEY-DAVIDSON 2019 Livewire EV

ANNOUNCES NEW MODELS By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

H

arley-Davidson sales have been sluggish, but Harley-Davidson is taking action and making positive changes. They have decided to introduce new models here in the USA and expand their business overseas to get more in line with what consumers abroad want in the motorcycle world.

2020 HD 1250 Custom

Harley-Davidson announced that in august of 2019, they will bring their Livewire EV (electric motorcycle) to the US market. We wrote about this many issues ago and it has a firm release date now. The Livewire EV will compete with the hot electric motorcycles already on the market place and allow H-D to continue to improve its green energy motorcycles. H-D says this will be “the first in a broad, no-clutch ‘twist and go’ portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish the company as the leader in the electrification of the sport.” They also announced three new additions to be launched in 2020; Pan America Adventurer-Tourer, an H-D Steetfighter and a (yet to be named) H-D Custom. All of these motorcycles are outside H-D’s usual box of thinking and looks to be their new focus on getting different demographics riding HarleyDavidson brand motorcycles.

“The bold actions we are announcing today leverage HarleyDavidson’s vast capabilities and competitive firepower – our excellence in product development and manufacturing, the global appeal of the brand and of course, our great dealer network,” said Matt Levatich, president and chief executive officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc. “Alongside our existing loyal riders, we will lead the next revolution of two-wheeled freedom to inspire future riders who have yet to even think about the thrill of riding.” Small-Displacement Motorcycles In Asian Markets: H-D stated they’re “developing a more accessible, small-displacement (250 cc to 500 cc) motorcycle for Asia emerging markets through a planned strategic alliance with a manufacturer in Asia.” The India motorcycle market is estimated around 20 million new units sold per year (mostly under 200cc). Prices are necessarily low, but the growing middle class in the country of 1.3 billion people has increased demand for more premium motorcycles and potential sales volume is huge. Harley-Davidson plans to enter India through a strategic alliance within the next two years with 250–500cc. H-D’s Thailand factory will be assembling motorcycles and their plan is to establish a China distribution center and expand dealer networks there. Exact plans of H-D’s expansion are still being worked out, but it is clear from the Motor Company’s current US focus and with aggressive new efforts around the world that Harley-Davidson is leaning into a new and diverse future, placing large bets to make it all happen.

Poker, Bugs and Motorcycles to Benefit Veterans By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

I

’m so proud of the riders that came out to attend and support the Seventh Annual Fallen Soldiers March Poker & Bug Run received this year. Jim Retzke, Fallen Soldiers March President, expressed how much he felt blessed that these riders and attendees came out to support this cause and his vision. The 43-mile poker ride and bug run began and ended at Bumpus Harley-Davidson of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and had three stops during the ride; VFW Post 8422, Chappy’s Bar and Grill, Crossroads Market. Riders pulled out of the dealership and returned with their best hands to discover who won the best hand prize. They also had dots attached to their bikes in hopes that a bug would hit the center of that dot during the ride to win the big prize. The poker ride and the bug run top prizes were Lower-Level Nashville Predators season tickets and six month unlimited gun range fees family pass to The Gun Room. The best poker hand was won by Randy Blair who drew four nines. The Bug Run was indisputable as Christy Tomberlain had a near center dot strike by bug. The worst poker hand was won by Mark Lee and he received a book titled Poker for Dummies, leather bound John MacArthur study Bible & Uno Cards. CMA TN Chapters received an engraved plaque for being the FSM largest support group combined attendance. A very deserving veteran, Kenny Belew, Tennessee State Commander of Disabled Veterans, will be the recipient of a service dog as soon as it passes all three phases of training. The Fallen Soldier Memorial Fund, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, utilizes donations to help provide Service Dogs to our wounded veterans. The price for Service Dogs is in the range of $15,000 - $30,000. Jim Retzke said, “The Fallen Soldiers March gifts service dogs & certified biblical counseling to help Veterans & military families overcome the consequences of war including PTSD, traumatic brain injury, blast-induced brain injury, paralysis, mobility issues, neurological challenges, chemical exposure, MST, moral injury, divorce, addiction, family & domestic issues and deployment. Our (ultimate) vision of a Fallen Soldiers March is to build a FSM Ranch which incorporates not only a state-of-the-art service dog training facility to fulfill the overwhelming need, but also includes a working ranch, biblical counseling services, prayer gardens place of peace and tranquility for concerts and family oriented activities to promote volunteerism by the community at large and a potentially sources of employment for Veterans. For more information on the Fallen Soldiers March, go to: www.fallensoldiersmarch.com.

Winner of Indian Motorcycle’s The Wrench: Scout Bobber Build Off I ndian Motorcycle unveiled its final three custom builds from The Wrench: Scout Bobber Build Off at the legendary Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The national custom motorcycle competition, which was designed to spotlight non-professional builders who wrench for the passion and not the pay, awarded three finalists with a 2018 Indian Scout Bobber and a $10,000 build budget. Each builder had three months to turn their stock motorcycle in to one-off works of custom motorcycle art. A judging panel of professional builders and experts, including Roland Sands, Satya Kraus, Jason Paul Michaels and Hot Bike Editor-in-Chief Jordan Mastagni selected 12 semi-finalists from more than 100 submissions. Each semi-finalist was showcased online for a

fan vote to determine the three finalists. After viewing sketches and renderings, the fan-favorites that arose included a NASA engineer from Las Cruces, NM, an OSHA safety inspector from Avon, OH, and a mechanical engineer from Buffalo, NY. The three finished Scout Bobber custom motorcycles are currently showcased on IndianMotorcycle.com. The grand prize winner will be announced via social media after this magazine went to press. PJ Grakauskas, age 39, built a vintage racing café motorcycle with a full fairing (B). Alfredo Juarez, age 34, a NASA engineer, built a custom café style motorcycle (A) with influences from RSD and David Beckham’s garage company, Knuckle. Christian Newman, age 36, built a 60’s inspired old school chopper (C).

hen you hit a milestone like the 40th Anniversary of you business, you need to throw a big party. Andy did just that at his establishment, Bud’s Sports Bar in Chattanooga, TN. He fully staffed up and had a tremendous buffet on the patio for everyone to enjoy along with a lot of cold beverages being dished out by Bud’s smokin’ hot Bud Girls. The place was packed wall to wall and on the patio. Free 40th Anniversary t-shirts were given out while they lasted. The day had its interaction with the attendees in the form of a Hot Dog Eating contest. The contestants lined up at the table and did their best to consume as many hot dogs as possible. Live entertainment hit the stage featuring Josh Minchew, Mother Legacy -Shay and Steven, and closing in the late evening with Aunt Betty. The lighting and sound systems were provided by Larz Hanson. If you missed it, make plans for the 41st Anniversary Party. “It never just another day, here at Bud’s.”

THE SIPESTER BUILD

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

W

ith the popularity of Scramblers being made off the Harley-Davidson Sportster platform, several companies are beginning to specialize in the production and transformation of the Iconic 883 and 1200 Sportsters. One such company is HUGO Moto based in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. They have designed and go with manufacturers to produce some outstanding products to enhance the Harley-Davidson ride in the woods and have the motorcycle hook-up in terrain once thought unreachable for a Harley. “All of us (are) in fact after the same motorcycle: a capable machine with continuous torque, easy to work on with parts that could be found all over the world. We settled on the proven Harley-Davidson Sportster”, said Nico Danan, CEO of HUGO Moto. Enter Ryan Sipes, professional motorcycle champion in several different motorcycle racing series. He was to be surprised with a new build specifically for him (The Sipester). With parts from HUGO Moto and assembled by Chuck Lambert at Breezin’ Metal Works located in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, it began to take shape. The bike is an HD2Enduro kit with a custom left exhaust. The key to the kit is the Peg Relocation Kit that allows positioning the rider the proper way when riding offroad especially when standing up, in addition to the amazing suspension! The “Sipester” was built and presented to Ryan in Tellico Plains TN. His response was, “Whoa Nelly, that’s a bad bike right there.” After an hour or so photos and going over the bike, the crew left out on an unbelievable adventure across the Great Smoky Mountains, through creeks, power sliding across dirt and gravel roads, climbing a few hills and then returning so that Ryan could get under way to his next race. Ryan was smiles from ear to ear. “That’s amazing. I never thought of a Harley doing anything close to that.” Custom & Extra Parts included in the build: HUGO “Dude” Skid Plate, Custom Paint by LEFEVERS Cycles, Custom seat by Comfyass Seat, Pro Moto Billet foot pegs, Supertrapp slip on muffler, Trailtech Voyager, Breezin’ Metal Work’s custom made handlebar made to Ryan Sipe’s specs, custom left side exhaust, Rekluse auto clutch, Hugo Moto/ Traxxion Dynamics long travel fork kit, 17.5” Fox shocks, Hugo Moto/Led Sled chain conversion kit, Super B lithium batteries. $150 OFF or FREE

Shields® Unit

Offer valid on professionally installed Outdoor Containment System only. Not valid with any other offers. Not valid on previous purchases. Other restrictions may apply. Valid only at Invisible Fence of the Tennessee Valey. Expires 10/31/18.

Upgrade your pet’s life. Boundary Plus® Technology means bigger freedom in smaller areas

• This exclusive technology delivers up to 30% more yard space allowing your dog (or cat) to safely play right up to the yard’s edge. It’s the perfect fit for unique or small lots and tight spaces.

Virtual endless boundary

• Prevents any “breakthrough” where pets run beyond the signal’s reach, leaving no room for escape.

Zero unintentional yard lock-outs

• Other systems can confuse pets if they “breakthrough” the boundary and try to reenter, emitting a correction and stopping them from coming home. Boundary Plus® containment ensures this can’t happen!
