words from the publisher

Hello Folks, We hope you are doing well and enjoying the approaching fall weather. We attending Destination Helen Rally in Helen, GA in August and had a great time. The weather forecast put a damper on the attendance, but the weather held off for us. We had our rain gear but really didn't need it. The City of Helen threw the rally organizer a curve ball at the last minute by not allowing vendors to set up in the park as they did last year. Pat Turner, the organizer had to find another location and succeeded at moving vendors to the parking lot in front of her store, Chattahoochee Biker Gear. Way to go Pat! We always enjoy going to this rally and feasting on delicious German cuisine. The roads leading to Helen, GA are beautiful and serene; another plus. We highly recommend this rally! If you are looking for some great roads to ride and haven't visited East TN, you need to make plans to visit soon. The fall is a great time with leaves changing color and cooler temperatures. We are very fortunate to live in an area that offers such awesome roads to explore with some great little quaint towns dotted on the map. You'll be in for a treat. I found a great site to explore at http://www.openroadjourney. com/. Check it out. The Boogie Hits 12 Years Old and Growing T

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

he 12th Anniversary June Bug Boogie was nothing short of spectacular. Herbert and Amber always have something new up their sleeves and this year was no different. The Hank Williams Tribute Band headlined and stacked deck of entertainment including Rapture AC/DC Tribute Band, Hired Guns, Lost Dawg, Padlock Grin, Grey Dayze and a couple more. The Bag Lady Sue never disappoints with her own raunchy style of comedy. Mini-swimming pools popped up everywhere during the day and at night, the stage took every ones attention. A new Mr and Ms June Bug was crowned and a new bike games stadium was built with standing room shaded roofs for everyone to get under and out of the way of the events. I would estimate over 3,000 came to the event. People were riding that thing every day. The midway was packed vendors and rally goers buying everything from food to leather clothing. Thanks again for the Southern Biker Road Crew Geno and Tony Wicks along with Biker Bob from USA Biker Parties for getting all the shots we had to have. The Boogie Too is coming September 26th-29th with a ton of entertainment and ventriloquist Harley & friend Crystal. It’s also Herbert and Amber’s second anniversary. Let’s throw them an anniversary party they won’t forget!!!

CCRF, Combat Casualty Relief Fund Tennessee National Guard Helping Their Soldiers and Airmen

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he Tennessee National Guard has taken an extra step for their soldiers and airmen in forming the C.C.R.F. (Combat Casualty Relief Fund). The Combat Casualty Relief Fund (CCRF) has been established to offer assistance to soldiers and airmen and their families as a means to offset financial hardships incurred as a result of combat related casualties incurred during a deployment while serving in the Tennessee National Guard. While there are other such nonprofit/privately owned charities that say they help soldiers, most succumb to the inevitable “money” theme instead of what they say they were for, helping the soldiers. There are many of those out there, but none may do what the CCRF does today; give 100% of every dollar to the aide of their soldier and their family. Depending on the research source you use, you will find some very interesting figures. While doing my research, I found one charity that gave no money collected to any soldier; the facilitators kept everything. While

10 - Southern Biker Magazine

some charities provide some benefit with a small amount of the money they raise, just think of what donating all of the money donated to the soldiers would do. The Wounded Warrior Project in 2011 brought in over $74 million dollars. Only $31 million went to the soldiers. Charity Navigator, a charity watchdog firm, gave them a rating of 54.18. They had approximately $16 million in the bank and the rest of the roughly $27 million went to CEO, managers, benefits, expenses, marketing, etc. I don’t know about you, but I would rather a soldier who lost both legs while protecting our country and our freedom receive every penny of my donated dollar rather than only a few cents of every dollar. In today’s world, Americans want to stand up and come to the soldiers’ aides who are returning from combat with injuries both physical and mental by the thousands. Millions of dollars are raised in their name, but soldiers are finding out he/she is not receiving 100% of the funds intended for their benefit. The Tennessee National

Guard with its own Combat Casualty Relief Fund is taking fundraising for soldiers to a new level and taking out the middleman who usually benefits from proceeds. Funding for the CCRF began with the people of Tennessee and the people of the states where the soldiers live. The CCRF bike build was brought about by the guys from the Tellico Biker Rally (TBR): Michael Fouts, Mike Thompson, Elmer Grayson and Wesley Rowland. They along with Knoxville Harley-Davidson, Southern Biker Magazine, many businesses and individuals gathered parts for bike builder Mike Denniston of Thunder Valley Cycles to create the very first themed TNNG CCRF bike. The money raised and donated from the bike will amount to around $25,000 and it will be presented to the TN National Guard office in Nashville to go straight into the CCRF fund. The CCRF custom bike will be given away this fall at the Tellico Biker Rally. “I look forward to the day we don’t have to raise money for own soldiers”, September, 2013

CCRF, Combat Casualty Relief Fund ....continued

said Michael Fouts, a veteran himself. “But until that time, there are people like us that are willing to help and go that extra mile. It only takes one trip to Walter A. Reed hospital or a veteran’s hospital to see those injured soldiers. If you don’t cry and don’t want to help, you aren’t human.” Other states’ National Guards are bound to be looking at this example and seeing how it can work for them as well. Our goal for next year is help raise over a million dollars for the CCRF and with the support of great Americans, some Tennessee corporate businesses and great motorcycle riders like yourself, that goal should be smashed. If you would like to learn more, set up a benefit for the CCRF or donate to this fund, visit www.tnmilitary.org/CCRF for more information. (Coming soon: Southern Biker Magazine and Joe Ball Consulting are currently building the new CCRF web site at no cost to the TN National Guard).

Ladies Ride in Bike Show Benefits Abused Horses

By Ms Mag Man, Kristin Gracy • Photography by Karen Strickland & Doug Jones

T

he day started out looking like rain, but clouds split and blue skies jumped out with warm temperatures. Ladies on their bikes began to pour in and the vendors were set up for every lady’s needs. There were women owned businesses providing manicures, pedicures, women’s clothing and accessories, vehicle transportation, jewelry, massages, hair stylists, tattoo artists, photography for the ladies on their bikes and oh yeah, the male buff bike wash! (Thanks Bill and Michael). What a great turnout and the beginning of an annual event. all the event proceeds. Over a thousand dollars was raised and more was still being mailed in to Horse Haven at this writing. Horse Haven’s mascot, Twinkie, a miniature horse, enjoyed meeting and taking pictures with everyone. He was the star of the event! A big thanks to Gayle Edmiston, the GM at Quaker Steak & Lube for providing a great place to host the Southern Biker Magazine’s Ladies Ride-In Bike show and providing the awesome band Jack’d Up. Kudos to all the vendors and people that came out to support the event. Congratulations to Michele Dorcas for winning the People’s Choice award. Thanks to all of you, many abused horses were helped by ladies on steel horses.

of what it takes to make it in this sport. “The Silver Point MX Camp was a combination of organized training and fun. The students burned through more gallons of gas than a normal weekend while learning new techniques and identifying their weaknesses. Every rider came away with a sense of control and awareness on the track. The weather held up and the track was in perfect condition and I look forward to holding another event at Silver Point MX”, said Saylor when asked about how the camp went. What did the campers have to say about the camp? 24 yr old Ashly Casseday of Georgia was glad he made the trip. He raced as a child but stopped when he was about 14. This weekend was the first time he’d been back on a bike in ten years. “The camp was great. Jacob is a very good hands-on teacher for all levels of motocross”. Track manager Chad Crain was excited that Silver Point was able to host the 2 day camp. “The Jacob Saylor MX School here at Silver Point MX Park was a huge success! We couldn’t have asked for a better instructor to come out and put this camp on for us. The Kentucky Bike Rally Continues to Return to Prominance

A

By Richard Hollin

lot has changed for the Kentucky Bike Rally in the last few years, including the name. Formerly known as the Little Sturgis Rally after the nearest town by that name, the event was first held in 1993. The name change was the result of a contentious lawsuit with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. of South Dakota that was filed in 2008. The Western Kentucky event was officially pronounced dead in 2011 due to flagging attendance, increasing costs, bad economic times and bad Karma over the lawsuit. The rally was resurrected in 2012 under new management in the form of Carlene Thomas and company, and continued under the name Kentucky Bike Fest and now the Kentucky Bike Rally. There were a few things missing this year that used to discourage riders from attending. The long lines and awkward process of signing in is now gone. Bikers are now directed into a staging lot where they park, are processed, pay admission and receive their armbands. The price structure now makes a lot more sense. Saturday day-trippers now pay the reduced price of $20 and weekend passes are $30. That brought in even more people to enjoy the event along with their great camping areas. A good vendor attendance had them selling everything a biker would want or need and it was still pretty easy to get a t-shirt and something to eat at a good price. As for the entertainment,

24 - Southern Biker Magazine

well-known biker bands including Kentucky Headhunters, Big Engine, Hired Guns, and Geneva and a host of other bands were in the lineup. A couple of popular stars from Sons of Anarachy insured lots of photo flashes going off. There was good participation in the bike show with some really interesting bike games and rides. The Kentucky Bike Rally is situated in a beautiful part of the state where there are many scenic routes to ride. See you at their next event which is sure to continue growing into one of the largest Kentucky has ever seen!

43RD ANNUAL OKTOBERFEST

Hear Our

ROAR! Kathy Tolleson, CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

I am so excited to share with you the news about a Ladies Bike Weekend in Daytona Beach. It is the first annual event. The dates are October 4-6. Jody Perewitz (the fastest lady on an American made motorcycle) will be the Grand Marshal. She and I will be leading a ride on Saturday, October 5th. There are so many things to participate in throughout the weekend. There will be special bands at the Iron Horse Saloon along with a bike contest and fashion show. Plus, Tech Tips

from J&P Cycles, an airbrush demonstration at ROAR, fitting tips and basic bike maintenance. On Saturday morning there will be a poolside party at the Lotus Inn & Suites in Ormond Beach. It is the host hotel and a great venue. Go online to check it out at lotusinnandsuites.com. It has a South Beach look with enough metal and leather to make any motorcycle rider feel at home. On Sunday morning the Rossmeyer family will be leading their annual ride to raise money Camp Boggy Creek which pro-

vides camping experiences for seriously ill children. It’s a super great cause. This is a good opportunity for anyone who doesn’t like the heavy crowds during Bike Week and Biketoberfest to get to experience the Greater Daytona Beach Area. Check out the events section of our website for the complete schedule. It’s going to be a great girl’s weekend and I hope to see you there! Tell a friend.....

For more info go to http://www.ironhorse-saloon.com/ or Southern Biker Magazine’s Facebook.

73rd Annual, STURGIS Motorcycle Rally

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

A

thousand pictures later, the Southern Biker Road Crew put in a lot of ride time and photo taking for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Motorcycle riders from all over the world converged into the Black Hills of South Dakota for a motorcycle event, like none other. There was a lot of stuff going on at this event from what some expected to be a mild turnout and actually became a hugely attended event. Indian Motorcycles came with the unveiling of their new 2014 Indian Line-up and what a great unveiling it was. The bikes designed as the Indians we remembered with a lot of new tech attached to them. One thing that pops out is the new Thunder Stroke111 engine to be housed in some of their new bikes. Bike builders, celebrities, business owners, the press and riders wanting to have the great experience that is Sturgis came and enjoyed everything asphalt and fun. Rides for charities and individual rides were happening throughout the Black Hills; to Mount Rushmore to the Crazy Horse monument, to the Devil’s Tower, the Mayor’s ride, the Legends Ride and so many more. The Buffalo Chip hosted the annual Biker Belles charity event which drew hundreds of riders and celebrities. If you’ve never been to Sturgis, make sure to put it on your bucket list. The trip may be long, but you will leave with hundreds of great memories.

Food for Thought

by Barry Duncan Carter’s Restaurant - In Ten Mile, TN on State Highway 304 you will find a great little restaurant with home cooking. Carter’s Restaurant serves up your down home favorites. They offer the standard burgers and sandwiches, but it’s the home cooked dinners that will make you come back for more. Dinners range from hamburger steak, chicken livers, pork tenderloin with fried fish on Friday night and chicken on Sunday. You can fill up on the sides alone, pinto beans and cornbread, green beans, mac & cheese, okra and lots more. I happened in on Sunday for the two boneless chicken breasts, slaw and pinto beans with cornbread at $7.99. The sexy beast had chicken strips, pinto beans with cornbread, green beans at $7.79. The sexy beast was too full for his favorite, apple dumplings with ice cream at $4.39, so we’ll be back soon. Carter’s is open Wednesday & Thursday 11:00 AM-8:30 PM, Friday-Saturday 11:00 AM-9:00 PM and Sunday 11:00 AM-8:30 PM. Check ‘em out at www.cartersrestaurant.net or call (423) 334-3300.
