Saturday nights VYC games will be spectacular as both teams are eyeing strong playoff runs towards the end of their season. The NBL1 teams have a great opportunity on Sunday afternoon to get two key victories over the Melbourne Tigers to get them back on track for their second half of the season also As you may have seen, we have introduced “THE CAGE”, a community court aimed to help all our members in become better players. We’ve had great success with the launch over the first week of School Holidays and look to extend that for the future. Go Sabres! Craig Weir – CEO Photography: Mitch Barlow and NBL1 official photos

VYC Men Review – Round 14 Saturday June 26 v Dandenong @ Dandenong

T

Week ‘whatever’ sees the Sandringham Youth League Women’s team return to the court against Sunbury on Saturday, in a continuation of the longest season ever. Players who started the season as young women are now ready for the age pension. We had a fantastic game against Sunbury at Sunbury back a few rounds, with the Sabres getting the chocolates after an enormous battle, 88-80. Maddison Ford torched us that day with 26, before having to leave to play football at ¾ time, and three other Sunbury players hit double figures. Sunbury are coming off a high scoring win against Dandenong last week, so the Sabres will need to ramp up our team defensive effort against an offense that has loads of scoring options, inside and outside the key. The Sabres team is currently sitting in fourth spot in the Terrill Conference, but have a tough run home and need a win to maintain their position. Controlling the boards and ball movement on offense are going to be keys for Sabre success this week.

he VYCM Sabres returned to their competition on Saturday night, unfortunately suffering a loss at the hands of Dandenong 84-69. After a solid first half unfortunately the team let slip the lead it had possessed for nearly the entire half going in to the break down 4 points. In the second half, whilst the offence gained momentum, scoring 40 points, the defence suffered, giving up 51 points. The team was led by an efficient Ben Charnley who had 13 points (100% FG, 100% FT) and 13 rebounds. The Sabres move on to attack an Eltham team at home in what is sure to be a competitive matchup. The Wildcats had greater success on their first game back after the hiatus, getting over the line against Ringwood. Andy Lim – Coach

“We’re getting closer!”

he Sabres women are ready to get back on the winners list. After last week’s double weekend against our country counterparts the Sabres have enjoyed being back at training this week. It was evident in last week’s games that Albury and Geelong had been training, under their allowed country Victorian restrictions, and were ready to go. Both teams got the early jump in the games and we had to fight back. Morgan Riley had a standout game against Albury with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Rach Jarry was consistent with her performance scoring 17 points Elyse Kiploks and Alice Humble also had valuable contributions with 9 and 8 points respectively. This week the Sabres turn their focus to Melbourne. After beating Melbourne in round 1 it is important that the team comes ready to play as Melbourne have recruited Monique Andriuolo to their squad. We will be looking to start the game with strong defence ensuring that Melbourne don’t get hot from the 3-point line. Monique Conti and Zitina Aokuso have been consistent performers for the Tigers and we will be looking to shut them down early. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our supporters that have attended games. It has been a challenging season and year for many, and the support is very much appreciated. Jacqui O’NEILL – Coach

T

he restart to the season was the tale of two games, a solid second quarter was bright spot in a tough loss to Geelong (but as to be expected after so much time off, and new players to the system). But the following day saw the group stay in the game all the way to the last few possessions unfortunately not edging Albury. It was so pleasing to see improvement on the season, from game to game, and some very good individual performances across the weekend. Nic Gabsch with 20 points versus the Supercats, and Preston Bungei (20pts 4 blks) and Kuany Kuany (28pts 17rbs) led the way vs the Bandits. This weekend, we see our first reverse fixture against the Melbourne Tigers. Melbourne has been in a similar rebuild to the Sabres, which led to a competitive game in Rd1 of the season, where the Orange & Blue got their only W thus far. So, this stands to deliver a similar enthralling battle. The Tigers come to the Sabredome in similar form to the Sabres having only won one game in the 2021 campaign. They continue to rely heavily on sharpshooter Felix Von Hofe (32pts last week vs Ballarat), and athletic big Keenan Willie, and dynamic point guard Anthony Karabatsos. Important reminder from all staff and athletes; thank you! Without you the fans, we can’t do this. Please remember, our doors are always open. Nathan Cooper Brown – Coach
