he Anzac Day match was a game of momentum shifts. We started very strongly and led by 13 at the half. But Melbourne fought back well with some great three point shooting in the third quarter and early fourth quarter to narrow the gap to 7. Then Madi McFarlane (9 points/ 3 rebounds) sprang into action nailing four long baskets to allow us to attain a 13 point win. We had great performances from a number of players, and everyone contributed something. Mia Cigognini again filled the stat sheet with 8 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists and 4 points (and a +/- of 26). Lucy Burke had a 19 point, 10 rebound, 4 assist game. Jaz Grollo and Jaida Reid both had 11 points and Abby Riggs did a lot of everything including locking-down on one of Melbourne’s keys. But this one was one of those dream games for a coach where the win was rightfully a team effort. Regardless of who scored and rebounded, the offense looked much better with quicker transition and better ball and player movement. Only rarely did the ball stick in a player’s hands, and often it was through trying to find a cutter or shooter in a better position. Defense was also improved, with a particular focus on securing the boards. Thanks to Cal and Vicki again for their help. Cal deserves a lot of credit for our team’s success so far in the season. He controls all of the subbing decisions and does a great job keeping the spirit up in the team. Finally, he calms me down, which is an at-times not insubstantial task.

he VYCM Sabres had a successful performance in their win over the Melbourne Tigers 88-69. The team started strongly defensively, only allowing 13 points in the 1st quarter and were able to capitalise on the other end, building a 17 point lead during the first half. However, the Tigers hit back strongly in the second quarter, cutting in to the Sabres lead. Strong shooting from Campbell Blogg (13 points, 3/3 3pt at half time), coupled with the positive defensive foundation laid early, meant the team held a 3 point lead going in to the break. The Sabres came out firing in the third quarter, starting the period on a 15-4 run and never looked back. 5 double digit scorers (Blogg, Ryan Heath, Bailey Clarkson, Joe Lubarsky and Tom Koppens) combined with Ben Charnley’s 8 assists demonstrated a team willing to share the load offensively to the team’s benefit. It was terrific overall performance from the VYCM team, with Melbourne never gaining the lead throughout the 40 minutes. The team is looking forward to the challenge of attempting to replicate it against a Bulleen team that have been running hot! Andy Lim – Coach
