TRENDS

What to expect in 2023 from upcoming watch launches? Experts worldwide share their views.

The Swiss watch industry is on track for a record year in 2022, with a 19 percent upswing in Swiss watch exports in September. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, shipments increased that month to 2.2 billion francs (US$2.2 billion).

Senior executives and industry experts surveyed for the Deloitte Swiss Watch Industry Study 2022 predict medium growth (27 percent) in the African market for the year ahead, just two percent behind Hong Kong.

Four percent predict strong growth for the continent compared with 16 percent in the Middle East and 26 percent in North America – the highest growth market.

South Africa is home to the most prominent luxury market in Africa by revenue, and collectable watches are a significant component of this. The Africa Wealth Report 2022 , published by Henley & Partners, notes South African high-net-worth individuals collect the likes of Patek Philippe, Breguet, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet at prices ranging from US$20,000 to more than US$1 million.

22 HAUTE MONTRES

WHAT COLLECTORS WANT

“I hope to see more ergonomic designs, back to the fine aesthetics of cases from the early 2000s. But I predict that not all watchmakers will do this. Maybe the smaller brands will return to their traditions and re-do their DNA from the 1990s to the 2000s. I would be happy to see that,” says Artemy Lechbinsky, CEO of Ineichen Auctioneers in Zurich, Switzerland.

US-based Collective Horology, founded by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly to connect enthusiasts passionate about watchmaking through an exclusive membership and access to limited-edition bespoke timepieces, notice that collectors are turning increasingly to dress watches. “This is driven by changing tastes – notably, a growing preference for smaller watches – and newer collectors expanding their interests as they delve further into watchmaking,” says Reilly.

Growing interest in independent brands, as well as micro-brands, continues. “We’re also seeing renewed interest in high-end watchmaking from established brands, including Vacheron Constantin, Chopard and Montblanc’s Villeret collection, as collectors realise legacy brands can deliver interesting, well-finished watches on the level of independent brands,” says Reilly.

Meanwhile, Lechbinsky believes the best investment this year is complicated watches by Jaeger-LeCoultre and Parmigiani Fleurier.

Interestingly, collectors are no less excited by watches in the sub-US$1 000 segment than any other, with microbrands demonstrating that interesting watchmaking is possible at any price point. Reilly notes that Chicagobased Sō Labs’ new automatic watches show that creativity is alive and well in this segment. “Telling time should be about fun(k), not just function. Quality timepieces with rad colour combinations and strange names” states the brand.

The limited edition Oris Divers Sixty-Five

B O L D A N D B R I G H T

Mohammed Ravat, director at Sandton-based Bellagio Jewellers, hopes for bold designs but expects the new releases to be conservative and understated. “We’ve seen a trend this year towards sports chic in brands such as Oris with the ProPilot X Calibre 400 and just-released BRX-5 from Bell & Ross. The growth in this conservative but modern design category is a way to explore reaching a new client. I think this trend will continue in 2023,” he says.

Furthermore, since travel restrictions have been relaxed, there should be a shift towards releasing more diving watches, as this category has always been a traditional pillar for most brands. Ravat says diving watches allow brands to push the limits of design principles while still o ering a functional timepiece.

Dial colourways are another talking point. “While there will always be a large segment of the population that seeks out blue, black and white dials, there has been a strong trend towards bold colours of late. This broke into the mainstream in 2020 with Rolex’s brightly coloured Oyster Perpetuals but has also been seen all around the industry with purple dials from URWERK and vivid yellow from Glashütte Original. This is driven by a younger generation of collectors seeking watches that break from the norm,” says Rapkin.

Green dials have proved to be a refreshing change from conventional black and blue, Ravat adds. The recently released limited edition Oris Aquis New York Harbour edition has a green mother-of-pearl dial mimicking the colour of the water in New York Harbour and a complementary green strap. Furthermore, he says the introduction of the Colour Dream concept across gents’ complications from Franck Muller has been well received by clients. “The industry has been more daring with colour with the introduction of pastel colours in the Oris Cotton Candy collection, or use of copper brown in the Bell & Ross BR05 and ice blue in the BRX-5. The bold use of colour is a growth area, and we should see many more variations in 2023.”

INTRODUCING LUXURY BRANDS TO NEW AUDIENCES

Pre-owned luxury watches are becoming increasingly sought after, with almost one in three consumers saying they are likely or somewhat likely to buy one in the next 12 months, an increase of almost 50 percent from Deloitte’s survey last year. “Consumers consider buying pre-owned watches because of the lower price, the opportunity to buy a discontinued model, for investment purposes, and for sustainability reasons. The trend is even stronger among younger customers.

Waseem Ravat (@watch_maniac), founder of the SA Watch Club, encourages investment in pre-owned watches, especially by new watch enthusiasts. “Depending on your budget, I’d say look at TAG Heuer, Bell & Ross, Cartier, Panerai. It’s great value for money and a fraction of the retail price. For new watches at the R40 000 to R50 000 price point, I’d suggest TUDOR, Longines, Rado, Breitling and Bell & Ross.”

HANDCRAFTED LUXURY

In 2023, jewellery design trends will favour big, bold and bright metals and gems, natural, ethically sourced materials, geometric patterns and organic shapes.

There is an emotional shift from indulgent spoiling to self-celebration in consumer purchases, with more buyers attracted to pieces they can wear for daily pleasure rather than a special occasion.

Demand for genderless aesthetics is opening the way for brands to capture more of the male market with designs extending beyond the traditional wedding band to engagement rings and line extensions that include everything from delicate to more daring and fashion-forward styles.

Yellow gold will continue to dominate the market, while vintage pieces hold their own through the longevity of appeal and opportunity for personalisation through a redesign for modern heirlooms.

The State of Fashion Watches & Jewellery report released by The Business of Fashion and McKinsey & Company o ers a five-year view to 2025 and highlights the potential for other materials to have a moment beyond the traditional gold, platinum, and diamonds. The authors foresee increased experimentation with titanium, for example, more coloured stones and potentially lab-grown diamonds, despite some jewellery players questioning their energy e ciency in production.

Conscious consumers seek jewellers who prioritise sustainable practices in sourcing and making accessories, with Bvlgari and Chopard being longstanding proponents of sustainable, ethical practices.

NYC-based Ra a Jewels follows the same policy and adheres to a strict no-waste policy. Metals are recycled and given new life when clients commission something new from an older creation passed down by generations.

Cartier and Kering, together with the Responsible Jewellery Council, launched the Watch and Jewellery Initiative 2030 to encourage industry players to strengthen e orts to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

SPOTLIGHT ON OMEGA

Spirit of adventure

CRAFTED WITH TOP-QUALITY MATERIALS, including stainless steel and sapphire crystal, the Omega Speedmaster has been a part of all six lunar missions and is a true reflection of the brand’s adventurous pioneering spirit. The original was designed in 1957, and the new model retains the iconic look for which the piece is so well-loved.

TIMELESS STYLE

The Speedmaster ’57 co-axial master chronometer chronograph 40.5mm takes inspiration from the 1957 original, an iconic timepiece in its own right. This model features a stainless-steel case, a blue dial with rhodium-plated hour markers, and Broad Arrow hands. All of these components feature white SuperLumiNova.

The bezel is brushed and includes a blackened tachymeter scale, while the caseback features a ‘Speedmaster ‘57’ engraving and a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment inside.

The matching bracelet boasts Omega’s patented comfort release adjustment system, and the timepiece is driven by the manualwinding Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9906.

The piece boasts a time zone function, allowing the hour hand to adjust to di erent time zones without stopping the watch. The movement is una ected by exposure to strong magnetic fields, even those greater than 1.5 teslas.

In line with the world-class quality for which Omega is known, the Speedmaster is Master Chronometer certified, which guarantees the Swiss industry’s highest standard of precision, performance and magnetic resistance.

Each innovative component – from the Co-Axial escapements and silicon balance spring to the rhodium-plated finish – comes together to form a timepiece fit for adventure.

The Speedmaster ’57 co-axial master chronometer chronograph 40.5mm is available in in eight variations with options for steel on steel and steel on leather.

WATCHMAKING MASTERPIECES

The annual Oscars of watchmaking recognise the work of artists and artisans in the industry who demonstrate the ultimate in innovation and savoire-faire.

30 HAUTE MONTRES

The long-awaited Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) – the watchmaking Oscars – revealed 21 winners from 90 entries at the awards ceremony in Geneva’s Théâtre du Léman on Thursday, 10 November 2022.

The GPHG shortlist is selected by an international academy composed of more than 650 esteemed stakeholders from the various sectors of the watch industry who pursue their mission of celebrating and promoting the watchmaking art. A secret ballot determines the winners under notarial supervision.

Both MB&F creations shortlisted won prizes at the 22nd annual event, taking its total to nine GPHG awards in 17 years. MB&F is a kinetic creator of sculptures for the wrist at very high price points that reflect their haute horlogerie composition.

In the Challenge category, the M.A.D.1 RED is an accessible timepiece created under a di erent brand, M.A.D.Editions. It is not an MB&F Machine, but another label with the crazy MB&F touch; innovative case structure, lateral time display, inverted movement, and a triple-blade winding rotor that is the showpiece (especially when the SuperLumiNova kicks in). The LM Sequential EVO – an MB&F Machine nominated in the Chronograph category – won the prestigious Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix (Best in Show). Featuring the independent brand’s 20th calibre to date, the double chronograph allows multiple timing settings, including split-second, independent and lap timer modes – a combination that has never been seen before in any existing chronograph.

Sequential EVO in a post-event interview. “How do I feel? There is nothing to describe this. I never dreamt of this when you look at who is primed for the Aiguille d’Or. But this is 100 percent for Stephen McDonnell, who thinks like no one else. He’s reinvented the chronograph, and it’s of incredible beauty. It’s unique because it’s extraordinary in technology and thinking.”

“On the M.A.D.1 RED, we took an industrial movement, put it upside down, and created this crazy rotor that turns on top of it and cylinders underneath, giving the time. The case construction is nuts and we reserved it for a happy few. It’s not supposed to be a business. It’s an act of love,” he says.

Akrivia, Bvlgari, Grand Seiko, Ferdinand Berthoud, Grönefeld, H. Moser & Cie, Hermès, Krayon, Parmigiani Fleurier, Sylvain Pinaud, TAG Heuer, Trilobe, Tudor, Van Cleef & Arpels and Voutilainen brands were also winners.

Bvlgari took the Jewellery Watch Prize for its Serpenti Misteriosi High Jewellery piece and the Audacity Prize for the Octo Finissimo Ultra 10th Anniversary piece, adding yet another accolade to the Octo Finissimo series. Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of Bvlgari, notes the latter is the thinnest mechanical watch ever created at 1.8mm (thinner than a two Swiss franc coin). “The movement is integrated with the case and accurately gives time. But perhaps the breakthrough is the connection with the metaverse thanks to the QR code, which is engraved on the barrel and which, with your mobile, takes you into the blockchain, where you will find everything about the watch, more importantly, a unique NFT collectable piece of digital contemporary art. So,

it’s a new era, combining 19th century excellence with the 21st century digital world and getting Bvlgari closer than ever to art,” he says.

Hermès came out on top in the Ladies’ Complication and Men’s Complication categories for the Arceau Le temps voyageur. Combining a sophisticated measuring tool with a representation of terrestrial space, the Arceau Le temps voyageur watch is part of a longstanding tradition of craftsmanship, technology and the art of time. Envisioned as a beautiful escape, it seems to fulfil our dream of ubiquity; being everywhere at once, travelling the world in a few steps.

Van Cleef & Arpels is the third brand to win double awards for the Fontaine Aux Oiseaux automaton in the Mechanical Clock category and the Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier watch in the Innovation category. The Fontaine Aux Oiseaux is a spectacle like no other, displaying an artistic masterpiece that features 25 000 hours of craftsmanship. A delicate feather moves progressively along the time scale on the side of the base to indicate the hours. On the other hand, reading the time on the Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier involves counting the number of flowers that pop open between fluttering

butterflies. For example, three flowers indicate three o’clock. The dial’s scenery is renewed automatically every 60 minutes. The blooms contrast with the white mother-of-pearl dial, and ethereal blue butterflies flutter between the pink and red corollas, accentuating the dial’s relief.

Meanwhile, the Pioneer Cylindrical Tourbillon Skeleton by the independent family-owned H. Moser & Cie won the Tourbillon Watch Prize. “Reminiscent of the marine chronometer made hundreds of years ago, the team reinvented the way tourbillons are made. It’s very di cult to create such dimensions – cylindrical hairsprings – and we have a division called Precision Engineering where we have masters, engineers who specialise in that. That’s why at H. Moser, we’re able to develop such amazing watches,” says CEO Edouard Meylan.

The winning ladies’ watch, the Tonda PF Automatic by Parmigiani Fleurier, was created in response to last year’s unveiling of the Tonda PF Micro-Rotor 40mm. CEO Guido Terreni says, “We had many ladies who would love to have that watch, just slightly smaller. I was surprised when they asked us not to add decorative elements but to remain pure. Being feminine doesn’t necessarily mean being baroque or decorative. It can also be very elegant and essential with a lot of character and purity.”

TUDOR won the Diver’s Watch Prize. The brand has been creating watches for professional divers since 1954, and the Pelagos FXD reconnects with that glorious past. “It’s a very robust watch, developed with professional divers from the French Navy, and we’re able to make it available commercially, which is great news for all diving watch enthusiasts, of which I am one,” says CEO Eric Pirson.

Edouard and Bertrand Meylan, owners of H. Moser & Cie, winner of the Tourbillon Watch Prize 2022 Hermès Horloger won the Men’s Complication Watch Prize 2022 and the Ladies’ Complication Watch Prize 2022. CEO Laurent Dordet accepts an award at the GPHG ceremony.

COLOURS OF

A FRI CA

Design Indaba and Google Arts and Culture have joined forces to launch ‘Colours of Africa’, an online project that showcases 60 specially curated artworks produced by our very own African creatives. Sixty creatives were invited to contribute a piece of work that captures the colour and essence of their home country.

A RANGE OF CREATIVITY

The creatives for the project were selected by Ravi Naidoo, Design Indaba’s founder. He chose creatives from a broad scope of disciplines, including architecture, illustration, painting, ceramics, writing, engineering, performing arts and visual communications. The work of these creatives has been converted into images, videos, texts and illustrations to showcase the best of African craft, industrial design, fashion, film, jewellery, music and more. Some featured artists include Algerian photographer Ramzy Bensaadi, Egyptian fashion designer Bisrat Negassi, Congolese filmmaker Archange Kiyindou ‘Yamakasi’ and Sierra Leonean visual artist Ngadi Smart.

AN ACCESSIBLE LENS

Each artwork is showcased online as part of the first artistic undertaking of this scale. Viewers are invited to discover Africa’s stories as told by her creative community. As part of the viewing experience, one can spin

The design concept and interface for the digital exhibition was brought to life with the help of former Design Indaba conference speaker Noel Pretorius and his creative partner Elin Sjöberg who worked with the Google Arts & Culture Lab. The exhibition is the first of its kind and serves as an important – and highly accessible – resource.

OUR CONTINENT’S WORK

In addition to ‘Colours of Africa’, the initiative has also launched over 4 000 images and videos, as well as 20 curated exhibits from Design Indaba’s archive. These include award-winning initiatives like Sheltersuit, Arch for Arch and Emerging Creatives, which are now extensively profiled online for the very first time. New pieces by some of Africa’s most important contemporary creatives are now displayed. These include Fozia Ismail, who was a featured creative on Serpentine Gallery’s Creative Exchange programme; Mayada Adil El Sayed, who represented Sudanese women at the Generation Equality Forum, and Lady Skollie, the winner of the 10th FNB art prize.

AFRICA’S BEAUTY

For Google’s managing director Nitin Gajria, the initiative allows viewers to experience a whole new world. “This project answers the vital call for all to notice and embrace African art in all its wonder,” he says. “By empowering and amplifying African voices to tell the unique stories of their cultures through their creativity, we hope to provide muchneeded exposure, cultivate a newfound curiosity, and open a window onto the vast beauty that exists in the continent.” goo.gle/coloursofafrica

Patek Philippe has been synonymous with watchmaking artistry for generations. In fact, the manufacturer has been crafting some of the world’s finest watches since 1839. The creative freedom they employ has always allowed the manufacturer to design and develop pieces steeped in a tradition of innovation. The newest releases remain true to this heritage, as grand complications meet beautiful designs.

PATEK PHILIPPE SHOWCASE

Elegant mastery

Grand complications meet striking designs in Patek Philippe’s latest models.

PATEK PHILIPPE MONOPUSHER

REF. 5470P

This timepiece features a new high-performance manually wound movement that measures and displays 1/10th of a second, all while maintaining excellent accuracy. To achieve this mechanical masterpiece, the manufacture used the CH 29-535 PS calibre, the first Patek Philippe classically built movement entirely designed and produced in its workshops accompanied by 6 patents (2009).

The dial on this stunning piece is bluevarnished and features gold-applied Breguet numerals. The platinum case has interchangeable solid and sapphire crystal case backs and is water-resistant to a depth of 30 metres.

The watch comes with a hand-stitched, navy blue leather strap and a fold-over clasp.

41 HAUTE MONTRES IN SPONSORSHIP WITH LEXUS

PATEK PHILIPPE ANNUAL CALENDAR

REF. 5205R

The Annual Calendar Reference 5205, featuring its day/ date/month apertures arranged in the arc of a circle, was originally launched in 2010 in two white gold versions. This year, the model has been revisited in an original and contemporary colour palette. The olive-green dial features a sunburst motif, as well as a black gradient around the rim. A rose gold frame at 12 o’clock accentuates the most important item of information, the date.

The rose gold case is distinguished by its concave bezel, hollowed flanks and skeletonised lugs. The refined architecture is completely hand-polished by the artisans at Patek Philippe.

The strap comes in handstitched leather with square scales in a shade of two-tone green.

PATEK PHILIPPE LADIES’ WORLD TIME

REF. 7130R-014

This gorgeous ladies’ model is the reinterpretation of a classic. Crafted in an original and modern shade of olive green, the timepiece makes an elegant statement. The dial features a finely hand-guilloched basket weave motif, and the green hue is picked up on the city disk where white-printed names stand out.

The self-winding Calibre 240 HU in an ultrathin movement keeps the case extremely slim for a refined aesthetic. The time is permanently displayed in all 24 time zones, thanks to a city disk and 24-hour disk divided into day/night zones distinguished by their colour and the sun/ moon symbols.

The rose gold case is fitted with a sapphire crystal caseback, while the bezel is set with 62 diamonds. The shiny olive-green strap is handstitched and features a prong buckle.

42 HAUTE MONTRES

PATEK PHILIPPE ANNUAL CALENDAR TRAVEL TIME

REF. 5326G

For the first time, Patek Philippe has combined the patented Annual Calendar and the Travel Time display system. The result is a piece that always indicates the exact date for local time. To achieve this original functionality, a new self-winding movement was engineered that boasts a Travel Time mechanism that controls the Annual Calendar and enables date correction in both forwards and backwards directions.

This model comes in a Calatrava-type case rimmed with a Clous de Paris hobnail guilloched pattern. The dial has a vintage aesthetic; its anthracite colour and slightly grainy texture are reminiscent of old-fashioned cameras.

The piece comes with two interchangeable straps: one in beige with a nubuck finish and the other in black with an embossed fabric and beige topstitching.

PATEK PHILIPPE COMPLICATIONS

7121/200G

The moon-phase indication has been used on ladies’ watches since 2013, and the complication has now been reinterpreted with a white gold case and an elegant blue dial on which the displays stand out like stars in the night sky. The dial features a beautiful sunburst decoration, while the bezel is illuminated by a double row of 132 brilliant-cut diamonds.

The watch features the manually wound mechanical Calibre 215 PS LU, which is the smallest Patek Philippe complicated movement. This helps to maintain the dainty elegance of the case, which is just 22 mm in diameter.

The leather strap comes in shiny blue with a prong buckle.

Lexus has steered its opulent o -roader to newfound levels. And, when the new-generation LX dropped anchor at the southernmost tip of the African continent, it was already set to take over the helm from its forebear after its 14-year duty, with elevated levels of luxury, technology and driving poise.

The local LX line-up comprises five derivatives, with three specification levels available. These include the standard variants and – for the first time on the LX – F Sport and VIP grades. As standard, the range features top-level technologies such as a stacked dual-display arrangement (sited atop the dashboard and incorporated into the centre console, respectively) boasting a 12.3-inch infotainment display incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 7.0-inch screen used for operating several of the

vehicle functionalities. However, not all functions are operated via touch. The LX retains analogue controls for adjusting the volume of the crisp 25-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system and engaging low range, among others. An 8.0-inch digital instrument binnacle is also present. Park distance control is included. The box-fresh LX debuted Lexus’ fingerprint identification system for engine start. The 500d and 600 models’ 1 109- and 767-litre luggage compartments are accessed via a (standard-fitment) electrically controlled tailgate. The suite of safety items includes eight airbags and ISOFIX child-seat anchorages. Lexus’ Safety System+ set-up also features dynamic radar cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-trace assist and tyrepressure monitoring.

Available with the LX 500d and 600, the F Sport models are distinguished by their jet-black front grilles, satin-plated moulding on the front and rear and 22-inch forged alloy wheels, the largest ever fitted to an LX. The Lexus-solid interior features heated and ventilated F Sport seats, with the outboard rear pews o ering heating functionality, as does the multifunction steering wheel. A cool box is located in the centre console. ‘F Sport’ badging can be found throughout the human-centric cabin. However, the LX F Sport variants are not only sporty in terms of aesthetics. The electric power steering has also been tuned to suit this model’s sportier characteristics.

sustainability

EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT

More and more, watchmakers must think outside the box to meet the consumer demand for suppliers with more sustainable practices.

It’s been four years since the WWF published its environmental rating and industry report that demanded more transparency and responsibility in the watch and jewellery sector, calling out those whose sustainability practices fell short of modern standards.

Today, Google searches for ‘fine jewellery’, ‘fine watches’, and ‘sustainability’ have spiked. The authors of the State of Fashion: Watches and Jewellery report released by Business of Fashion and McKinsey in 2021 expect purchases of fine jewellery with

sustainability in mind to more than triple in the years ahead. They emphasised the need for the industry to establish more transparency and traceability in its supply chains to show buyers they are serious about driving environmental and social progress. “If the brand doesn’t have a sustainability agenda or credentials, then for many consumers – millennials in particular – it will just not be viable,” says co-author Alexander Thiel.

Sustainability was a central theme at Watches and Wonders Geneva this year, with panel discussions focusing on transparency, circularity and responsible

sourcing. The event, the most prestigious of the watchmaking world’s annual reveals, also saw the signing of the founding documents of the Watch and Jewellery Initiative 2030. Spearheaded by Cartier, delegated by parent company Richemont, and Kering, the owner of Boucheron and Pomellato, the initiative is designed to inspire positive change with Chanel Horlogerie Joaillerie, Montblanc, Rosy Blue, Swarovski, Gucci Watches, Boucheron, Pomellato, Dodo and Qeelin part of a growing membership.

Cyrille Vigneron, President and CEO of Cartier International, says, “We all firmly believe the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and aspirations for a sustainable industry can be achieved only through collaborative initiatives. We remain committed to sharing our common vision of a future where all Maisons, their suppliers and business partners are empowered to impact the planet and its people positively.”

IWC was the first in the industry to publish a sustainability report and was top of the WWF list for companies doing the right thing in that sphere. It has set 25 sustainability targets for top management to reach by March 2023. CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr is vocal about its achievements, including being the first industry brand to be RJC chain-ofcustody certified. “Sustainability is more than surface level at IWC. We don’t throw around pledges of progress without backing them up or asking ourselves the tough questions needed to move things forward and faster,” he says.

The Manufacture is powered by 100% renewable energy globally, and they are developing and implementing a green IT strategy because “computers and networks have a footprint too”. They successfully renewed their ‘Great Place to Work’ certification and have also achieved equal pay certification. The philosophy underpins everything IWC does in that they “care about what you wear – down to the smallest detail”.

BRANDS LIKE ROLEX, OMEGA AND PANERAI ARE INVOLVED IN CONSERVATION PROJECTS

Rolex helps protect the oceans through various partnerships and grants to individuals and organisations. These include Rolex Awards laureates Barbara Block, Vreni Häussermann and Brad Norman; Rolex Awards Associate Laureate Emma Camp; and global networks of marine scientists such as Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society. The organisation also partners with the Monaco Blue Initiative, which unites experts, policymakers, business entrepreneurs and NGOs to discuss solutions to challenges in this environment.

Furthermore, it has supported expeditions such as Under the Pole III, where teams have been “diving for science in some of the most remote and hostile places on earth” since 2017 to research the mesophotic coral ecosystems between 30 and 150 metres and develop underwater exploration techniques.

Mission Blue is a marine conservation organisation championed by Rolex as part of its Perpetual Planet initiative. It works together to explore, restore, revive and guard the world’s oceans to have 30 percent of our oceans protected by 2030.

Dr Sylvia Earle, founder of Mission Blue and a Rolex Testimonee since 1982, introduced the idea of Hope Spots to protect critical ocean ecosystems. They also recognise, empower and support people involved in its protection. There are now 147 worldwide. “Like Rolex, I feel we have to continue our e orts towards a Perpetual Planet so that the marvels of the ocean in all its teeming diversity are not lost to future generations,” she says. “Together, we can make a di erence.”

Hope Spots are notable for their remarkable abundance or diversity of species, habitats or ecosystems; play host to rare, threatened or endemic species; exist on a site with the potential to reverse damage from negative human impacts or are the location for natural spectacles such as major migrations or spawning grounds; have historical, cultural or spiritual significance and economic value for the community. Examples include the Great

Fringing Reef, the first Hope Spot in the Red Sea, ‘The Whales City’ in South San Jorge Gulf in Argentina, and a new marine protected area in Israel’s Palmahim Slide.

Meanwhile, OMEGA collaborated with GoodPlanet Foundation to make the award-winning documentary Planet Ocean, a love letter to the seas, filmed by 10 aerial and 13 underwater cameramen who captured the splendour above and below the ocean’s surface to show how we can all help improve their health. The ethos behind OMEGA’s Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m collection sustains its rich legacy of ocean conservation. OMEGA has since supported ‘Time for the Planet’, two projects designed to maintain Indonesia’s natural heritage and preserve local economic activities.

OMEGA also partners with Privateer in a critical mission to track satellites and debris dangerous to human activity in space. Space junk is hazardous to the satellites we rely on for communication, positioning and climate monitoring and must be tracked to remove it e ectively.

OMEGA has been flight-qualified by NASA since 1965 and was the supplier of watches for all six moon landings.

This year, Panerai launched the Panerai Ocean Conservation Initiative in a twoyear collaboration with IOC-UNESCO–the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO – to develop an Ocean Literacy programme in the framework of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030). It is a global educational and awareness-raising programme that encourages diverse stakeholders to become agents of change and ocean stewards. It’s about “transforming ocean knowledge into action”.

Part of the education focus involves lectures for students at 100 universities. They will learn more about how a luxury brand like Panerai can work against climate change and ocean pollution and be inspired to think about the ocean di erently. Mainly, the goal is for them to become active agents of change.

Panerai’s Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel™ line is made of Panerai eSteel™, which comprises 95% recycled steel.

SPOTLIGHT ON ROLEX

A classic reborn

THE OYSTER PERPETUAL DATEJUST 31 in Oystersteel and white gold is a real beauty. It features an azzuro-blue floral motif, a diamond-set dial and an oyster bracelet. The aesthetic is elegant, and although the design is new, the timepiece has managed to hold onto the tradition for which the Datejust is known.

A DISTINCTIVE LOOK

The dial on the new Datejust model is its most distinctive feature. It boasts 24 diamonds in 18-carat gold settings and a beautiful floral motif in blue for a splash of colour. The floral motif is reminiscent of springtime energy and combines three di erent finishes: sunray, matt and grained. The unique motif was created using high-technology finishing techniques, and its textural e ect is enhanced by the carefully placed diamonds, which vary in size and illuminate the centre of each flower.

ALWAYS TIMELESS

The design and colour may bring a fresh energy, but the watch itself is timeless. The overall aesthetic and functions align with the original Datejust, a classic timepiece first launched in 1945 and one of the most recognisable o erings from Rolex.

THE TECHNICAL SIDE

The Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 comes with an Oystersteel and white gold case and is fitted with a fluted bezel. The case is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres, while the middle case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel, a particularly corrosion-resistant alloy. The Oyster bracelet seamlessly combines form and function –comfortable and robust without compromising on aesthetic beauty.

This new model from Rolex features a distinct floral face.

SPOTLIGHT ON BELL & ROSS

Beautiful mechanics

The BR-X5 represents a new chapter in the BR 05 collection from Bell & Ross.

WITH A STRONG aeronautical heritage, Bell & Ross is no stranger to linking the past with the present. Now, the brand has grown its BR 05 collection with the new BR-X5.

PUSHING THE LIMITS

In a quest for both lightness and resistance, the team behind the BR-X5 pushed the boundaries regarding the watch’s technical and aesthetic components. It took years of development to ensure the design and manufacture movement was just right, but the result is certainly worth the wait. The timepiece boasts a personalised oscillating weight and a variableinertia balance wheel, as well as a power reserve of an impressive 70 hours.

INSPIRED BY AERONAUTICS

The timepiece is highly sophisticated in its design. The case, made entirely of steel, is built around a watertight container that serves as a central core to protect manufacture movement. The unique square

bezel and round sapphire crystal on the dial side and open caseback on the movement side is fixed to the steel plates that form the top and bottom of the case. Although discreet from the front, the multi-layer assembly of the watch is clear when viewing the piece from the side; this hollowed-out architecture reveals the technical construction of the BR-X5, which optimises lightness.

NEW FEATURES

The BR-X5 stands out from its predecessor in some distinctive ways. A large aperture date window is positioned at 3 o’clock, while a circle-shaped power reserve indicator sits at 9 o’clock. These features, along with a dial that has been optimised for reading, gives the piece its new, contemporary visual identity. It also features an integrated steel bracelet, which is securely fastened to the case to form a perfect ergonomic unit.

A NEW DAWN

HAUTE MONTRES 92
French watchmaker Michel Herbelin celebrates 75 years of heritage and passion.
93 HAUTE MONTRES IN SPONSORSHIP WITH LEXUS

For decades, Michel Herbelin has been crafting watches that reflect the brand’s elegance. This year, the manufacturer celebrates 75 years and opens a new chapter as it takes on a new name: Herbelin. This marks the beginning of a new era in which the luxury brand can grow without letting go of the values of family and heritage.

THE STORY

The son of shop owners, Michel Herbelin, was determined to become a watchmaker despite pressure to take over the family business. He studied watchmaking and, in 1947, opened his own factory where he crafted timekeepers branded as ‘Impec’. In 1965, Impec became Michel Herbelin.

In the 1980s, Michel Herbelin released the Newport. Inspired by the portholes of transatlantic ships, these timepieces seamlessly combined technical expertise and attention to detail. Since the launch of the Newport, the brand has continued to develop new ranges with a balance of flair and technical precision.

Michel Herbelin passed his passion for the brand to his sons and grandchildren, who now play an essential role in the product range development – from sketching to manufacturing. The business continues as a family-run enterprise with two of Herbelin’s grandchildren involved in the running of the company.

FRENCH STYLE

Herbelin is based in Charquemont, France, just a few kilometres from the Swiss border. The decision to keep production on French soil reflects the brand’s respect for French watchmaking expertise. All its watches are designed, assembled by hand, inspected and repaired at the brand’s Franche-Comté workshops. Thanks to its close proximity to Switzerland, Herbelin uses exclusively Swiss movements in its timepieces, which it enhances with the luxury and refinement of genuine French style.

At the heart of the brand’s watchmaking is a love of beauty and movement and a passion for detail, which has perpetuated the brand’s success for generations.

A NEW SPACE

As part of the 75-year celebration and to mark the brand’s renewal, Herbelin has opened its first flagship boutique on Rue Bonaparte in Paris. Located in the legendary Saint-Germaindes-Prés district, the space is an elegant meeting place for lovers of beautiful timepieces and a showcase for the brand’s iconic models. The boutique has the atmosphere of a Parisian loft; chic, beautiful and refined.

THE FLAGSHIP COLLECTION

The rich history of Herbelin is marked by the creation of its emblematic lines, which have been reinterpreted to reflect new inspirations. First released in 1988, the Newport is a nautical-inspired model representing elegance, power and precision. The Newport o ering has continued to grow, with four new timepieces forming part of the flagship collection.

THE PIECES

The Newport Heritage Chronograph is inspired by the charismatic 1970’s design with a case presenting the cushion shape that was in-vogue at the time. The new design has retained the iconic features of the original Newport, including the strap’s central lugs, the porthole-style bezel with five screws modelled on sailing boats’ windlasses, and the ship’s wheel stamped on the crown.

The Newport Chronograph for Her has a sporty but stylish aesthetic with a white mother-of-pearl dial and diamond hour markers. The stainless-steel case has been subtly polished, while the woven steel link strap is both elegant and modern.

The Newport Slim Skeleton is a simple, elegant piece that perfectly balances tradition with contemporary design. The design is retro-inspired and minimalist, and although the timepiece was completely reworked, it has retained the essence of its nautical heritage in details like the central lugs and crown engraved with a ship’s wheel.

GETTING TO KNOW

Bisquit & Dubouché

Why my next drink should be Bisquit & Dubouché, and other cognac conversations with Global Ambassador Vincent Chappe.

Let’s say we met at a dinner event,” I ask. “We’re seated next to each other, and through our conversation, you learn that I’ve never tasted – nor even heard of – Bisquit & Dubouché Cognac. What am I missing out on?”

I’m talking to Vincent Chappe, none other than the Global Ambassador of a prestigious Cognac brand with over 200 years of history, and I’ve just asked him to make me the classic elevator pitch. He seems to pause in his answer; after all, I’m not another sommelier, supplier, merchant or cognacobsessed human ensconced in that world. I’m just a dinner companion.

“I would definitely have a lot to say, and it would be hard to stop me,” he replies. “What I like about Bisquit & Dubouché is the harmony, the alliance of di erent lands, of di erent vintages, of di erent ages, which then gives birth to the Cognac. It has an amazing, smooth and round taste – a refined, aromatic richness and sophistication – that lingers long after your first taste.”

And then, he says, he would urge me to try my first sip at once.

Cognac is in this man’s blood.

Born in Jarnac, the same origins as Bisquit & Dubouché in the Cognac region of France, Vincent Chappe has roots that extend deep into vineyard soils. Behind him stretches a family lineage of vine growers, distillers and packagers of Cognac. Based on this heritage alone, one might say Chappe was destined for his role at Bisquit & Dubouché, but it was his decades of hard graft in the spirits industry that cultivated an indelible love of crafting, packaging and distributing Cognac.

Beginning in 1980 with the estate and distillery management of the family business; continuing in 1992 with a business degree at the French Institute of Management; followed by many years overseeing the purchasing and marketing

of iconic brands, such as Alize, XO Beer, and Les Crus de Cognac; and culminating in 2009 with Bisquit & Dubouché ... Vincent Chappe has a résumé almost as long as Homer’s Odyssey and reads just as well too.

97 HAUTE MONTRES IN SPONSORSHIP WITH LEXUS
98 HAUTE MONTRES
Cognac epitomises sophistication and French savoir-faire, but it also celebrates achievements and can be enjoyed by everyone. VINCENT CHAPPE

When asked what sets Bisquit & Dubouché apart from other Cognacs, Chappe points to a rebellious divergence from the deeply traditional Cognac crafting methods.

“Though rooted in tradition, our distillation technique is longer and more intrinsic than is usually custom with other Cognacs. We look to reach the richest aromas in the esters, organic compounds that give rise to perfumed aromas. This technique is called the ’long cut method’, and it requires the skill and expertise of our master distillers, who work hard to deliver the rich, smooth and mellow flavours that are so synonymous with our one-of-a-kind Cognac.”

I then ask Chappe which of Bisquit & Dubouché’s three Cognacs – VSOP, XO, or VS – is his favourite and how he best enjoys them.

“It’s hard to choose, but if I had to, I would say Bisquit & Dubouché VSOP, as it hits the mark when served neat, as well as in an elevated cocktail. It is, to me, the most versatile.”

He goes on to recommend the XO served neat in a tulip glass; the VSOP on the rocks, mixed with ginger ale, or even for best-in-class cocktails, such as the Sidecar or the Sazerac; and the VS with ginger ale or frozen (-18°C) alongside smoked salmon or blue cheese.

From wine estates and distilleries to packaging design and goods plants, Vincent Chappe has worked the industry from the soil to the top shelf, and so his role as Ambassadeur Global De La Maison Cognac Bisquit & Dubouché feels right, like clicking the final piece of the puzzle into place.

And if I weren’t already sold, his concluding sentiments made me firm in my resolve to order a glass of Bisquit & Dubouché on my next night out:

“Cognac epitomises sophistication and French savoir-faire, but it also celebrates achievements and can be enjoyed by everyone. A well-executed Cognac is a complex piece of art that abides by a strict standard; it’s steeped in history while looking out to the future. I hope we will see more people pick this unique spirit as their drink of choice.”

À votre santé!

Inspired by nature’s rarest colours, this high jewellery collection from Graff celebrates the most precious hues. Featuring vivid red, deep blue and striking green alongside angled calibré cut and round diamonds, the pieces hold an incomparable beauty.

Rare hues

The ruby and diamond high jewellery necklace is among the collection’s most coveted pieces. The design offers a rhythmic flow of colour across the collarbone as gradated round rubies are framed by stylistic lines of diamonds. The diamond light directs the gaze towards the intricate centre motif, which features an oval ruby of more than six carats.

Precious stones

The finest Sri Lankan sapphires feature throughout the collection. Some stand-out pieces include a sapphire and diamond high jewellery ring, necklace, bracelet and earrings. These pieces drip in a saturated violet-blue hue and clusters of pure white diamonds.

104 HAUTE MONTRES

Sensuous curves

The Three Graces in Paradise colours are exceptional, but the collection also plays beautifully with curves and shapes. Arrangements of custom-cut stones are flawlessly set, sapphires and rubies feature in oval shapes, and diamonds are set at opposing angles to achieve a sense of three-dimensionality. The high jewellery ring boasts pure white pear-shaped diamond side stones, which enhance an exceptional 20.71-carat oval sapphire.

FOR THE

light OF LOVE

Les Jeux de l’ombre from Hermès explores the movement of shadow – and its relationship with light.

Designed by Hermès creative director Pierre Hardy, Les Jeux de l’ombre is a high jewellery collection that plays – in the most beautiful way – with the contrasts that connect shadows and light. Each piece glows with a colourful intensity, enhanced by using gemstones in dégradé or monochrome shades.

HAUTE MONTRES 106

LOVE A UNIQUE APPROACH

Hardy’s unique approach to pavé setting brings the collection to life. The Chaînes d’ombre necklace, for example, features flat-cut white diamonds, which are shadowed by dégradés of black spinels and blue sapphires, each of which was meticulously gemset. The effect is of bold juxtaposition as the piece bends gracefully across the skin.

FUNCTION AND FORM

Functional aesthetics is at the heart of Hermès design, and this collection is no different. Perhaps the most impressive piece in this regard is the Couleurs du jour necklace, which features a triptych that opens and closes to conceal its treasures or expose them to light.

108 HAUTE MONTRES

RAW INTENSITY

The choice of materials is something to behold. Rough, uncut stones were chosen for their particular intensity and form part of a series of rings and earrings. These stones filter the light to produce variations of a single shade. The lumierès brutes ring is part of this series; the striking piece features a rough brown diamond with a shadow of diamonds and a dégradé of brown to ebony diamonds.

Finding joy

It’s game on for watch and jewellery designers who celebrate optimism, hope and joy through their creations. Like-minded consumers can’t get enough of them.

110 HAUTE MONTRES

At this year’s Vicenzaoro, the largest European trade fair for goldsmiths and jewellery, designers showcased rainbow hues with a full range of coloured gemstones for whimsical pieces while others mixed it up with di erent sizes.

TRENDVISION Jewellery + Forecasting, the fair’s independent think tank that monitors and forecasts global jewellery trends, calls this gamification.

They see optimism on the horizon for 2023 and excitement and joy channelled by jewels in neon and chrome-coloured metal, pop-art aesthetics, candylike gemstones and playful shapes. Upbeat energy is reflected in colourful, fun, powerful statement pieces and shimmering finishes in full metallic e ect. “The party mood calls for chunky gold chains, gargantuan stones, loud logos, earrings and chokers in enormous proportions,” states TRENDVISION.

The need for joy and celebration of freedom through watch and jewellery designs in big colours and mood-boosting styles has endured since consumers were able to shed lacklustre lockdown outfits and dress up again. This trend was embraced by industry leaders such as Oris and Zenith, who exhibit at Watches and Wonders Geneva, the most prestigious watch fair held in the world’s watchmaking capital. Brand CEOs were excited about the swing to bright colours on dials and straps attached to timepieces that made them happy.

Oris’s ProPilot X Calibre 400 with a pink dial (left); Zenith’s Defy 21 Spectrum Collection features an array of dazzling shades; Hublot’s jungle green is one of four new colourways in the Big Bang Integral Ceramic line, representing earth, water and wood (below).

Oris’s ProPilot X Calibre 400 is a ‘mechanical joy machine’ with a pink dial, extending a long line of Oris pilot’s watches from the early 1900s with the hashtag #GoYourOwnWay.

Zenith’s Defy 21 Spectrum Collection features an array of dazzling shades, while this year’s releases in the Chronomaster Collection feature classic hues in tricolour counters that contrast beautifully with a matte silver or black dial.

Think flamboyant energy and fullblown glamour even in unisex pieces by Roger Dubuis, for example, which has added interest to collections that previously favoured black, white, silver and champagne dial colours. Blue is an enduring favourite, but today shades of burgundy, salmon, green, yellow, pink and turquoise enhance the colour spectrum for those building a watch collection with variety. Hublot’s jungle green is one of four new colourways in the Big Bang Integral Ceramic line, representing earth, water and wood.

Montblanc introduced a smoky red dial and red Sfumato calf leather strap for its 1858 Automatic Chronograph Kawa Karpo (above); The MoonSwatch collection is available in bright colours (right).

Karpo limited to 858 pieces and glacial patterns to the green, blue and black dials of its first-ever sports diving watch, the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date. Inspired by the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice), the main glacier of the Mont-Blanc Massif, the pattern is applied to dial colours that represent the blue of the Sea of Ice, the green ice in Antarctica, and black ice coloured by the lack of inclusions or air bubbles or containing volcanic ash deposits as seen in the polar regions. These tool watches are designed to nurture and fuel a spirit of adventure, which is even more treasured after the lengthy pandemic-induced confinement.

Omega’s Constellation collection also features a wide range of vivid new dial colours. And let’s not forget one of the most talked about launches this year, Omega’s first collaboration with Swatch to produce a playful take on its iconic Speedmaster Moonwatch chronograph. “Omega’s long and distinguished history

may have been cut short if it weren’t for the vision and the courage taken by Swatch. The MoonSwatch collection salutes the saviours of our industry in a witty and accessible way. The Swatches are perfect for budding Moonwatch fans, and I can’t think of a more appropriate icon for our shared project. We went to the moon, now we’re exploring the whole Milky Way. They’re great watches, in fantastic colours and make me smile,” says Omega President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann.

In the jewellery sphere, joyful spirit and cohorts of bold, juicy gems feature in collections such as Chopard’s Happy Diamonds with floating diamonds (because diamonds are happy when they are free).

Meanwhile, Valérie Messika’s Lucky Move collection inspires audacity with precious stones imbued with luck, energy and strength with its understated yet assertive aesthetic. She and fashion icon Kate Moss have collaborated on haute joallerie collections built on spontaneity and sincerity, the most recent being Messika by Kate Moss – Opus 2. Moss says her approach to jewellery is mood-based and constantly changing.

Piaget encourages buyers to wear ‘total colour your way’ by mixing and matching the engaging colours presented in the Possession and Sunlight collections, and who can resist Fabergé’s penchant for colour, detail and surprise? The Colours of Love collection exemplifies ‘A Life in Colour’ with extraordinary rainbow-coloured gemstones, while the Heritage guilloché enamel egg pendants and surprise lockets use yellow gold and rose gold to o set the jewel tones of the enamel and ‘surprise’ detail. Similarly, Fabergé’s Emotion range captivates with kaleidoscopic jewellery creations.

Pomellato’s Nudo collection now features the Rivière necklace, which balances femininity and boldness. The semi-flexible necklaces have pastel stones suspended between rose gold bars, two of which are set with diamonds. “We were looking for a way to bring the iconic look of the Nudo to a short necklace without losing its original spirit of fun and daring. By using the Clessidra cut, we give more volume and a richer colour to the bare gemstone without compromising the strong personality of Nudo. The simplicity and grace of the Nudo remains while o ering a fresh take on the gemstone necklace,” says creative director Vincenzo Castaldo. Nature o ers an endless colour palette that is a constant inspiration.

PERSONAL STYLE

The Empreinte collection was first designed in 2004 and stood out immediately for the distinctive designs that drew inspiration from the Louis Vuitton emblematic codes. Now, the Maison’s artistic director of Jewellery and Watches, Francesca Amfitheatrof, begins a new chapter as the collection grows to include bold new creations and contemporary designs.

THE INSPIRATION

Staying true to the Maison’s spirit of travel, the fine jewellery collection takes inspiration from the imprint of the nails used on their heritage trunks. The impression of these trunk studs is etched into pieces, available in yellow, white or pink gold. Other emblematic codes are used throughout the collection, including powerful LV initials, designed by Georges Vuitton in 1896, and openworked monogram flowers. The emblematic fourpetalled flower is seen on medallions that appear as modern talismans and on the cords of delicate bracelets.

No matter which way you choose to wear the pieces, it’s clear the collection expresses versatility beautifully; a long necklace, for example, is easily transformed into a multi-strand bracelet or stacked necklace, while ear cu s can be worn in countless combinations.

THE PIECES

Full of character, clear lines and bright strokes, the Empreinte collection includes a selection of necklaces, earrings, bangles and rings. Each piece is available in yellow, pink and white gold and diamonds feature prominently throughout the collection.

NeXt chapter

With the hybrid NX, Lexus has opened a present chapter in its exciting, electrified future. BY

123 HAUTE MONTRES IN SPONSORSHIP WITH LEXUS

The launch of the nextgeneration NX signified a new chapter for Lexus, a chapter written around four pillars: design, advanced technology, Lexus’ driving signature and electrification. Indeed, with the Japanese premium automaker’s sights confidently set on its exciting electrified future, it introduced a petrol-electric powertrain to the NX line-up. Enter the 350h AWD, arguably the protagonist in the NX story, which already comprised the commendable petrol-powered 250 AWD EX and 350 AWD F Sport characters.

The hybrid NX takes on three personas, each tailored for distinct readers to fall in love with. It is available in three guises, standard 350h AWD EX, luxurious 350h AWD SE grade and, as its name would suggest, sportier 350h AWD F Sport. These models employ Lexus’ fourth-generation large-capacity hybrid system comprising a 140 kW 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine

coupled with electric motors. The electrified powertrain produces a 179 kW and 239 Nm of torque, transferred to a new front transaxle and a rear transaxle (which incorporates the company’s motor-driven all-wheel-drive E-Four system) via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The E-Four layout improves torque delivery to the rear wheels and the system enhances performance and driveability, and fuel consumption.

Lexus’ hybrid-powered, premium compact SUV sprints to the three-figure marker from a standstill in 7.7 seconds before reaching an electronically governed top speed of 200 km/h. However, the most notable figure is that of fuel economy. The NX 350h has an average fuel consumption figure of 5.0 L/100 km. That’s 20 km/litre and amounts to an average range of 1 100 km on a single (55-litre) fuel tank before a fuel stop is required. In practice, if you plan to travel along the picturesque Garden Route from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay for a weekend away, the NX 350h will be able to take you there and back home on one tank of petrol. And you’ll do so in luxury and safety.

The new-generation NX 350h oozes style, inside and out. The NX’s beautifully crafted Lexus-solid interior has been designed with Tazuna – a word derived from the control an equestrian has when riding a horse while maintaining posture and looking ahead – in mind. The interior wraps around the driver. A comfortable place to be, the cabin features the firm’s new multimedia platform,

124 HAUTE MONTRES

a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen-mirroring functionality. Wireless smartphone charging is present in the SE and F Sport derivatives, as is a panoramic-view camera system. A head-up display is exclusive to the SE. The interior ambience is lifted with dual-zone climate control, electrically adjustable heated front pews (SE includes heated rear seats) and a sliding panoramic roof (SE and F Sport). The suite of safety systems includes dynamic radar active cruise control, an improved pre-crash system featuring front cross-tra c alert, blind-spot monitoring, lanetracing assist and a parking support brake system. In addition, the NX features Lexus’ e-latch electrically activated door handles. In SE and F Sport grades, this system incorporates safe exit assist,

which keeps the door closed to avoid a collision when detecting approaching cyclists or vehicles.

Outside, a revised version of Lexus’ spindle grille takes centre stage. A duo of slim LED headlamps, replete with striking LED daytime-running lights, flank the signature item. A full-width light bar spans the tailgate. The EX is fitted with sharply designed dark grey 18-inch alloys. The SE and F Sport ride on 20-inch wheels finished in contrasting dark and chrome accents and super-gloss, respectively.

The NX hybrid range is priced from R915 200. Each model is sold with Lexus’ comprehensive seven-year/105 000 km vehicle and eight-year/195 000 km hybrid battery warranty. A maintenance plan of seven services or 105 000 km is included.
