By Mark Ribble ONTARIO — Premier Doug Ford made a much-anticipated announcement on Monday to put the province into a temporary shutdown effective at 12:01 am on December 26. With Windsor-Essex already in the Grey: Lockdown status for the past 10 days, this decision hurls Chatham-Kent and other ‘low-number’ regions into the same measures. For restaurant diners, this means you will only be able to buy takeout food. There will be no inside or outside dining allowed. Discount and big box retailers selling groceries will be limited to 25 per cent capacity for in-store shopping. Supermarkets, grocery stores and similar stores that primarily sell food, as well as pharmacies, will continue to operate at 50 per cent capacity for in-store shopping. Expect lineups outside. Other retail stores can offer curbside pick-up only. “COVID is spreading rapidly across this province,” Ford said. “Normally, 75 per cent of our ICU beds are being used by heart attack patients, car accident victims and people with other health issues. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for COVID patients.” With thousands of backlogged surgeries, the Ontario medical industry urged the Premier to take action before the system implodes from the pressure. “I’m asking all Ontarians to stay home and only leave when necessary,” he said. The measures include restricting indoor organized public events and social gatherings, except with members of the same household (the people you live with). Individuals who live alone may consider having exclusive close contact with one other household. With regard to schools, Ford announced that elementary students are now scheduled to start back with in-class schooling on January 11. High school students will learn remotely beginning on the 11th and will resume in-class learning on January 25. Ford expressed cautious optimism that the vaccines arriving now in Ontario will eventually bring the numbers down, but cautioned that we need to do our part and remain vigilant. The shutdown will be in effect for 28 days in the south of the province and 14 in the north. The provincial health table will review numbers leading up to those dates. “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do,” said Ford. “Just give it a little bit longer.” Ford also announced a new Small Business Support Grant, where small businesses can get $10,000 to $20,000 to help them through the second wave.

Chatham-Kent looking at light abatement CHATHAM-KENT — Hot on the heels of the Kingsville and Leamington light abatement bylaws, Chatham-Kent Council is exploring the need for their own such bylaw. Councillor Melissa Harrigan made a motion that administration submit a report to council on the effect of green-

Virtual family visits continue at Erie Shores HealthCare LEAMINGTON — With the holidays now upon us and the province in lockdown mode, Erie Shores HealthCare continues to offer virtual family visits with the addition of three more iPad donations recently. They’ve set up a new online form for families to access the Virtual Family Visits program. The program is available for patients and their loved ones to receive assistance with connecting over the internet while visitor restrictions are in effect. Those who are not able to use their own devices to communicate through audio or video calls can receive assistance with hospital devices and technology platforms. “At a time when we have to restrict visiting at our hospital in order to keep our staff and patients as safe as possible, these virtual visits allow our patients to see and speak with their loved ones during a difficult and stressful time,” said Lena West, Patient Advocate at ESHC. The hospital now has 10 iPads available for use, thanks to the generous donation made by the Iacobelli family. “Keeping our patients connected to

the ones they love, especially during the holidays and during this pandemic is so crucial for the well-being of our patients and, quite frankly, peace of mind, for families,” said Arms Bumanlag, Director of Public Relations and Communications. “This donation will allow us to keep families connected. Thank you to the Iacobelli family for making ‘Care Happen Here’ at ESHC.’ Once families have completed the Request for a Virtual Family Visit form, a member of the ESHC Patient Engagement Team will contact family via e-mail to confirm the request for connection. Virtual Family Visits are approximately 20 minutes long and can be booked in advance online. We recognize the impact of isolation for patients and families during this difficult time and are doing everything we can to help patients and loved ones stay connected. Shop Local campaign should include community newspapers ONTARIO — The Ontario government states encouraging people to “show your love for local” by exploring new and creative ways to reconnect with the unique small businesses and places that make the province’s communities special. However, the program is not geared towards various media outlets including community newspapers. The province issued a press release last Wednesday noting that “Destination Ontario,” an agency of the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, has launched a new “Support Local” campaign. The province states the campaign is designed to “instill a sense of pride of place and encourage people to safely be a tourist in their own communities.” According to Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, it recognizes the importance of supporting Ontario’s entrepreneurs during this very difficult period. “COVID-19 has been a challenge for many local businesses that make up the fabric of our communities - we’ve all seen the anxiety in their eyes when we visit our favourite restaurant or artisan shop. We need local, as much as local needs us,” said Minister MacLeod. “That’s why this new marketing campaign is so important - it reminds us that there is an incredible community right outside our doorstep that we can safely explore and reconnect with. Three local businesses team up for turkey dinner By Mark Ribble What started as a conversation between the broker of record and the administrator, ended with Sun County Realty partnering with Food Basics and Pinnacle Acres to bring Christmas cheer to 60 local families. “We felt we needed to do more to give back to this community,” said Deiba Wigle, Broker of Record for Sun County Realty. “Christmas is a difficult time for a lot of

people and resources are often stretched too thin.” Wigle and office administrator Helena Dos Santos decided to do a draw and give away a full turkey dinner to five local families. That idea, much like the Christmas spirit, began to grow with each person that got involved. “I put a call into Jeff at Food Basics Leamington and when he heard what we were doing, he offered to donate the five tur-

keys,” said Wigle. Wigle decided to still buy the initial five turkeys, so they were now looking at giving away 10 turkey dinners. Food Basics also donated dinner rolls and provided optimum pricing for Sun County on anything else needed. But it didn’t stop there. Andrew and Lisa from Pinnacle Acres got wind of the idea and offered to donate to help 50 additional families, which

brought the draw total to 60 turkey dinners. Wigle and Dos Santos were touched by the response from the community. “The response from the draw has been humbling,” said Wigle. They heard things like,

“You don’t know how much I needed this,” and “This has put happiness in my heart.” “More than anything, we were told Thank You,” said Wigle. Through a Facebook draw held on December 18, sixty lucky families

won the opportunity to stop in at Food Basics on Monday to pick up their meals. Several of Sun County’s team were on hand to load the winners’ cars up with all the fixings.

LEAMINGTON — When the Leamington Mersea Goodfellows

were forced to cancel their annual Christmas Basket drive as Windsor-Essex

moved into lockdown, members were searching for a way to still give to families in need. After delivering Christmas baskets to the community since the 1970s, the Goodfellows were faced with a very difficult decision and they were unable to continue the tradition this year. In place of the Christmas baskets, the Goodfellows recently made a decision to mail a letter of explanation and a grocery store gift card to each of their nearly 200 recipients. If not for the generous donations of the rest of the community, this would not have been possible, however, once again, the community stepped up and the Goodfellows were able to provide a happy Christmas for many individuals and families.

Goodfellows find a way to give Jeff from Food Basics was instrumental in helping to organize the dinners.

Childhood shopping

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote in this column about some of my favourite childhood toys and that column prompted a couple of conversations about things from the past. As a child, my memories of toy shopping in Leamington took me to two places: Woolworth’s and The Metropolitan. At the time, they were almost across the street from each other, as The Met was located on Talbot West, where the St. Vincent de Paul store was recently located. Woolworth’s had it all, long before Zellers came along. I always found it cool to enter through the back entrance along Queens, where there was always one of those coin operated mechanical horses to ride. My mom had a picture in her photo album of my oldest brother and sister as young children, riding on that horse outside Woolworth’s. That was before I was born, so that horse stuck around for a long time. The wonders of Christmas season were not lost on me as a child. The uptown windows all decorated with Christmas scenes, were a sight to behold. The constant tapping of that mechanical Santa Claus on the window at Feldman’s, always got my attention. Watson’s and Neilson’s always had their windows decorated, as did Paterson’s Dry Goods and Cook’s Pro Hardware. Who can forget Jackson’s China, and The Abbey. Over at The Met, prior to their move east to the site of today’s Giant Tiger, those old uneven wooden floors made for a challenging stroll through the toy section, but there were always lots of unique finds there.

and a place called Consumers Distributing caught my attention when they opened in Windsor in the 1970s. Much like Sears, they made their presence through catalogues, which were mailed out a couple times a year. The difference between Consumers and Sears, was that you could walk into a Consumers Distributing store, look up your item in the catalogue, and walk out with the item under your arm. I remember a large array of jewellery, electronics and toys more than anything. Publisher Jim Heyens tells me he frequented the store in Chatham, which was upstairs in the mall. The one I remember in Windsor was on Dougall, I believe. The few times I was there, I recall a very busy place with lineups of people filling out their order forms and waiting at the counter, while an employee went into the warehouse to pull their items. I guess it was sort of like a 70s version of Amazon, without the shipping or computer access. All good things must come to an end, and the same can be said for Consumers Distributing. They officially filed for Bankruptcy in 1996, but I really don’t remember the local stores being around too long into the 1980s.

UMEI performs and records old-time radio play LEAMINGTON — There are many words that could describe the year 2020, but for UMEI students, a key one is “adaptability.” When the COVID-19 pandemic meant their students could not perform the traditional Grade 11 play, they were still determined to make this tradition a reality. Enter The 39 Steps, an audio drama which students could record safely and can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own cellphone or computer. “At first I was very disappointed that we couldn’t do our usual play, since I had been looking forward to it for years,” said Technical Director Raylene Schartner. “But this opportunity not only makes our class unique, but gives us a play that we can listen to for years to come. Producing the audio drama also presented the opportunity to learn new skills and programs in sound editing and mixing.” The entire Grade 11 class lends their vocals to the story. “It was a lot of fun to explore the range of my voice and to create a character just through vocal expression,” explained student Tiffany Redekop, who plays Pamela Stewart. “The challenge of doing something new also helped bring our class closer together.” The 39 Steps is a radio play adapted

by Joe Landry based on the 1935 movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The story is a masterful blend of horror, comedy and romance, and Landry’s adaptation keeps the listener on the edge of their seat. As audio dramas and podcasts have risen in popularity, the class hopes audiences enjoy this offering entirely acted, edited, and produced by the Grade 11 class of UMEI. The genre and advertisements reflect the style of old-time radio plays, so the recordings bring a sense of nostalgia and also incorporates ads from local businesses. “I am really proud of this class for adapting our decades old tradition during a pandemic,” said director Chani Wiens. “It gives me hope that students from this time will take away flexibility, creativity and determination. In the lemon that is 2020, they made this play their lemonade.” For more information, please visit umei.ca.

Point Pelee closing for deer reduction January 7-21 LEAMINGTON — Point Pelee National Park will be closed to visitors from January 7 through January 22, 2021 to conduct deer population reduction activities. The reduction will be carried out by Parks Canada staff and Caldwell First Nation. The park will open again as usual on January 22, 2021. According to Parks Canada, a high population of white-tailed deer is a serious threat to forest and savannah health at Point Pelee National Park. Through over-browsing, the deer in the park are consuming and damaging native plants faster than they can regenerate — threatening the health of the Carolinian Forest — which is home to a number of species at risk such as the Red Mulberry Tree, Eastern-wood pewee, and Eastern Fox Snake. Deer are also jeopardizing efforts to restore the Lake Erie Sand Spit Savannah, a globally rare ecosystem that supports 25% of the species at risk in the park. Based on over 30 years of research and monitoring, a healthy and balanced environment at Point Pelee National Park would ideally support 24 to 32 deer, says Parks Canada. A series of mild winters with light snow cover and a lack of natural predators, such as wolves and cougars, have allowed the park’s white-tailed deer population to grow to two-times higher than what can be sustained. Population reduction is reserved for situations of absolute necessity and

Parks Canada has been collaborating with Caldwell First Nation for a number of years to actively manage the deer population to protect the park’s sensitive ecosystems. A dedicated COVID-19 Mitigation Plan has been developed in accordance with public health guidance and will be implemented to ensure the safety of staff and Caldwell First Nation partners in limiting the spread of COVID-19. Local McDonald’s owner gives back to community

The Leamington McDonald’s parking lot was the scene of a turkey giveaway, courtesy of owner Matt Tatomir. Tatomir, a Leamington native, gave away enough turkeys to provide Christmas dinner for more than 400 families. Photo submitted

LEAMINGTON — Leamington native Matt Tatomir, who now owns the Leamington and Essex McDonald’s locations through his company, Bull Market Holdings Inc., jumped into the Christmas giving season last week as he gave Christmas turkeys away to over 400 families. Tatomir was able to secure the 400 turkeys, with employees at both locations also offered turkeys. They were distributed in the parking lots of both locations with a special parking lot drive-thru set up for those in need.

“I really wanted to fill a gap,” he said. “When I heard that Talking Over Turkey couldn’t be held this year, I decided to help.” When Talking Over Turkey was cancelled, organizer Mike Diab challenged the community to step up and help, and that’s just what Tatomir did. He also donated turkeys to a couple of Leamington churches, who will be cooking them up for the needy, and that donation will feed another 200 people.

Dear Editor: The recent passing of the greenhouse light abatement by-law is a progressive step to lessen the concern of many residents, but patience and understanding will be required in order for greenhouse operators to fully comply with this order. There is no doubt that excessive light pollution and artificial day-length is disruptive to humans and our natural environment. We should also consider that our local economy was historically, and

currently based upon agricultural innovation that continues with out of season production of local fruits and vegetables. Greenhouse technology and methods are quickly evolving to mitigate excess light emissions and operators are adapting accordingly. In the mean time, please be patient, things could be much worse. Sincerely, Cameron Lyons Leamington

Notice of Public Meeting to Consider Zoning By-law Amendments Regarding Permanent Outdoor Patios & Bloomfield Business Park Take Notice that the Council of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent will consider amendments to the Chatham-Kent Zoning By-law (File D-14 C/52/20/C & C/53/20/C), under Section 34 of the Planning Act, R.S.O.1990, c.P.13, concerning the entire Municipality of Chatham-Kent. And Take Further Notice that the proposed amendments under the above file numbers will be considered on the date, and at the time and place shown below: Date: Time:

Monday, January 18, 2021 6:00 p.m. ELECTRONIC MEETING FORMAT

Due to the COVID-19 Emergency, on Monday, March 23, 2020, Council passed By-law 30-2020 that amends the Procedure By-law to permit electronic meetings for Council, Local Boards and Committees. Therefore, there will not be an in-person meeting and this meeting will be conducted through an electronic format only. D-14 C/52/20/C – Permanent Outdoor Patios Some business owners have noted that they may like to invest in constructing a permanent patio in future on their own property, but they are constrained in doing so because of current regulations in the Zoning By-law. Specifically, in several cases the only option to construct a permanent patio would be to use some existing parking spaces. In order to provide this opportunity, it is proposed that the Zoning By-law be amended so that up to 15% of the required and/or existing parking spaces for the main use of the property may be used to construct an outdoor patio. The required number of accessible offstreet parking spaces must still be provided. D-14 C/53/20/C – Bloomfield Business Park The Bloomfield Business Park is located at Bloomfield Road and Highway 401. The location consists of approximately 105 acres of planned industrial land. To enhance opportunity for business in Chatham-Kent it is proposed to expand the permitted uses in the Bloomfield Business Park, specifically the Prestige Industrial Zone (M4) and Light Industrial Zone (M5). The expanded uses will include the sale or lease of light duty, medium duty and heavy duty new and used trucks, the repair of same, and the sale of truck parts, both retail and wholesale, and related uses. This proposal does not include the sales and service of personal or farm vehicles. Information and Providing Comment For more information about these matters, including information about appeal rights, contact Allison Lambing, Planner II, Planning Services at 519.360.1998 or allisonl@chatham-kent.ca. Mail should be directed to Municipality of Chatham-Kent Planning Services, 315 King Street West, Box 640, Chatham ON N7M 5K8. Please note that an Electronic Meeting shall not permit public deputations, except by way of written submission received in advance of the meeting, which shall be submitted to the Planning Services Office or emailed to ckplanning@chatham-kent. ca prior to the start of the Electronic Meeting. Written submissions will be provided to members of Council in advance of the meeting, if possible. The Municipal Clerk will verbally read out the written deputation during the meeting at the time each amendment is considered. While verbal deputations are not permitted, the Electronic Meeting will be open to the public. Should you wish to participate in the Electronic Meeting, please contact Planning Services and instructions will be provided to join the meeting a few days in advance. Dated at the Municipality of Chatham-Kent this 23rd day of December, 2020.

Southpoint Hockey News kept players and parents informed By C. Scott Holland The Southpoint Hockey News was a newspaper entity which revolved around life and issues at the local hockey arena – originally Leamington Agricultural and Recreation Centre. It began as a means of keeping the players, coaches, parents and fans interested and involved in their own local hockey jurisdicCLAIRE tion. MCCORMICK While the

former Leamington Post had weekly stories summarizing the games played, the Southpoint Hockey News had biographies of the town’s NHLers, interviews with players and coaches and touched on important issues, and also held a few contests. The paper was free and bundles were given to the coaches to distribute, as well as being available in a rack within the arena. Its conception was developed and published through a small group of people who worked hard to bring joy to the thousands who read the paper. Mark Ribble, Frank Silveira, Scott Holland, Jim Bowman, Dave Dawson and Roger Shires were among the core group who got the paper started.

Often it included a guest columnist like the ‘Kanteen Queen’, Claire McCormick, who had a column called What’s Cookin’. Claire was a favourite of players and parents alike, along with Jean Pepper, who ran the canteen for many years. Looking back at all the paper’s features brings back fond memories of the original arena and the people who gave us those memories. The paper was published from Dec. 1996 until February 2000 when the new arena (now known as the Nature Fresh Complex) opened. The group published about five times per year. For everyone, it became an anticipated part of the hockey season and laid the foundations for other centres to follow suit.

Leamington’s random addresses would have given Santa trouble prior to 1948 By C. Scott Holland The jolly old fellow in the red and white suit having problems? Not a chance, you say? Well, he may have encountered some difficulties finding certain residences around Leamington prior to 1948. The systematic order of houses was not in place like it is today. Houses and businesses could have whatever number they wanted, as long as it wasn’t a duplicate of another number on the same street. The numbers could jump or decrease — they were not in numerical order or even odds and evens on different sides of the street. Poor Rudolph must have been dizzy and the rest of Santa’s reindeer extremely tired after visiting Leamington and the former Mersea Township. Leamington Town council and Canada Post rectified In 1996, Mersea Township installed new reflective house number signage to aid mail delivery, police, ambulance and fire services.

Pet of the Week

SOPHIE

Hi my name is Sophie! I’m pretty shy at first and you’ll probably find me hiding under something when you go looking for me. I take a little bit of time to warm up with new people and all it takes is some love, I am super loving and affectionate once I’m comfortable. I like to hide in small spaces and under you whenever I can as I am scared by loud noises easily, therefore I’m going to need a quiet/low activity home with no small children and no other animals. You don’t have to worry about buying me any toys cause they don’t interest me, I’d much rather be pet and I’m always looking for affection, I adore it! I also just love being around you and love to lay GLUED next to your side or right in your lap. I can’t wait to find my fuever home and be showered with love everyday!

Essex Power Corporation donates to help community needs

TECUMSEH — Essex Power Corporation has made a monetary donation to local food banks in Amherstburg, LaSalle, Leamington and Tecumseh, as well as adopted families through the Children’s Aid Foundation ‘Adopt a Family’ holiday program. The unprecedented year has brought uncertainty for many this holiday season, and as such, Essex Power Corporation and its employees have come together to collect and donate to local programs this year. As part of their giveback initiative, EPC has donated $4,000 to local food banks within the communities they serve. This is the 10th year that EPC has donated to local food banks.

The recipients of the donations include Amherstburg Food & Fellowship Mission, Tecumseh Goodfellows, Leamington Salvation Army and St. Andrew’s LaSalle Food Bank. In addition, through corporate and employee donations, EPC was able to provide items on wish lists for 8 families in its communities and gift cards for essential items. “This year has been especially tough for families and small businesses in our communities,” said John Avdoulos, CEO, Essex Power Corporation. “With the onset of COVID-19, many have found it difficult to make ends meet.”

REBRANDED BUSINESS

LEAMINGTON — Just prior to the pandemic last winter, The Lesson Lounge Music Store re-branded to become Chuck’s Guitar Shop. Charles Diab wanted to give his business a family feel and as an homage to his late father, Tom (Tom’s Shoe Repair), he wanted to go back to a much simpler name. The shop opened in 2012, and Diab found a new lease on life when he received a life-saving liver transplant in 2017. The year 2020 brought many changes in retail and Chuck’s Guitar Shop remains a constant at 120 Erie Street South in Leamington. During the grey lockdown, Diab is offering curbside service at 519-398-8080 and will still be arranging virtual lessons with his students. Sun photo

Kent & Essex Mutual Insurance Company donates $41,000 to local community programs CHATHAM-KENT — Kent & Essex Mutual (K&E), located on Creek Road in Chatham, has been in the fortunate position to provide another large donation to assist charitable organizations during this difficult time. The company was one of 49

mutual insurers to receive a one-time payment of $41,000 from the Cambridge-based re-insurer, Farm Mutual Re. These funds were earmarked for the re-insurer’s “Mutual Support” initiative which provided their member-mutuals

with the opportunity to continue their philanthropic support initiatives and local relief efforts. Through this initiative, K&E was able to provide a monetary donation to numerous charities and organizations throughout

the Chatham-Kent and Windsor-Essex regions. The directors and staff at K&E selected the recipients. K&E CEO, Kevin Konecny stated, “Thank you to Farm Mutual Re for this opportunity to support our local communi-

ties. We hope the donations will make it easier for these valuable organizations to continue to do their great work. The needs of our members and community always come first and it’s a practice we have believed in for over 132 years.”

Nicholls announces grant funding for RIDE programs CHATHAM-KENT-ESSEX — The Ontario government is investing a total of $137,353 for 2020-2021 and $137,078 for 2021-2022 to OPP Essex, Chatham-Kent, Windsor, and Lasalle Police Services through the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) grant program. This initiative is to help the local police services, covering the areas of Cha-

tham-Kent and Essex County, to keep impaired drivers off streets and highways. “With the holidays around the corner, it is important to have a plan to get home safely,” said MPP Rick Nicholls,Chatham-Kent-Leamington. “Impaired driving is illegal, whether from drugs or alcohol, and it only takes a few

minutes to figure out alternative plans to get home safely that may save your life and the lives of others.” RIDE grant funding will help carry out important year-round road safety initiatives such as education campaigns and roadside spot checks over 2020-21 and 2021-22. As Ontarians prepare to celebrate the

holiday season, they are reminded to make plans to get home safely. They can arrange for a designated driver, order a taxi or ride-share, or take public transit. They should also take immediate action if they see someone who may be impaired by arranging a ride for them or even calling 911 if someone is a risk to themselves and others.

Sports flashbacks -1972 This week’s flashbacks come to us from December 1972. Annual Peewee tournament draws 225 Upwards of 225 11-and-12-year-old hockey players converged on the Leamington Arena Tuesday and Wednesday as the 15th annual International Peewee Tournament was held. Visiting players were billeted to local families, as is the tradition. In the “A” final, Riverside defeated London by a 7-3 score. In the “B” final, Chatham got five goals from Mark Gilhula enroute to a 7-4 victory of the Leamington Edwards TV Peewees. Trailing 6-4 late, Leamington pulled goalie Paul Unrau for the extra attacker but Gilhula’s fifth goal on the empty net sealed the deal. Rico Festa had two goals for Leamington. Roger Dundas and Paul Arrowsmith scored singles. Juveniles stun Riverside 4-1 The Leamington Ardiel Juvenile Majors skated with only two lines on Sunday but still defeated a tough Riverside squad 4-1. The win moved the Pontiacs into sole possession of third place. Charlie Hyatt scored twice for Leamington with lone markers going to Gary Koestler and Tim Stevenson. Gene Biekx’s shutout bid was spoiled early in the third period. Juvenile Minors beat Kingsville The Ardiel Pontiac Juvenile Minors edged Kingsville 5-3 on Friday night, moving them into a three-way tie for first place with Cottam and Maidstone. Paul Child accepts the championship trophy for Sherman Station from tournament organizer Troy Wiper.

By C. Scott Holland Recently some old photos brought back a few memories of hot August days and having some fun playing baseball (in this case, lobball, or slopitch, if you will) on Pelee Island. The Island hosted an annual tournament featuring teams from the mainland - usually Kingsville, Harrow and Leamington - as well as one from Ohio and the Pelee Island team. Most years, it was just a one-day outing - a game in the morning, one in the afternoon and then the finals. It was fun day for all involved and helped boost the friendly nature that exists between these towns. Although the I.T., the Bonehead Raiders and the Road Apples made early appearances on the island, the usual Leamington crew was the Sherman Station team, which had a number of pick-up players as well as a few regular guys. They were certainly accustomed to winning the Pelee tourney. Something like this could be as big a hit today as it was then and maybe it is time someone revived it to foster goodwill and friendship, once this COVID is dealt with.

Christmas with a 1956 Cadillac THE OLD CAR DETECTIVE Bill Sherk

LEAMINGTON’S FIRST GOALIE MASKS As mentioned in the flashbacks column last week, three Leamington Minor Hockey netminders received goalie masks as part of a program within the local association to better protect the youngsters. It was December 1958, when the three Leamington goalies, Paul Setterington, Don Bruner and Randy MacKenzie, donned the shield-style masks. They were among the first to use such equipment. Since that day, every goaltender in the local hockey system has worn some type of helmet and facial protection. Of course, the real credit goes to late NHL netminder Jacques Plante, who on Nov. 1, 1959, while in the Montreal Canadiens’ net, suffered a broken nose, courtesy of an Andy Bathgate shot. After being attended to in the dressing room, he returned to the ice wearing his homemade mask - the same one he often wore at practices starting in 1956. Prior to using the mask that very first time in a regulation game, he had designed and developed different versions. Montreal coach Toe Blake was furious, but relented since Plante was their lone goalie. It led to an 18-game winning streak before he went without and lost 3-0 to Detroit. The rest is now history. The story of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Not everyone knows the story of how Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer came to be. We saw this on social media last week and thought it would be a good time to share the story. A 34-year-old ad writer for Montgomery Ward in Chicago in 1938, Bob May was exhausted and nearly broke. His young wife was bedridden and about to lose a two-year battle with cancer. The couple had a four-year-old daughter named Barbara. “Why isn’t my mommy like everybody else’s mommy?” asked Barbara one night. A small, sickly boy, Bob was constantly picked on and called names. But he wanted to give his daughter hope, and show her that being different was nothing to be ashamed of. He wanted her to know that he loved her and would always take care of her. Bob began to tell a story of a reindeer with a bright red nose, who was picked on by the other reindeer. That story became the basis for Rudolph The RedNosed Reindeer. Bob eventually turned it into a picture book for his daughter, and eventually, his employer bought the rights and gave away six million copies of Rudolph to shoppers in their stores. His brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, who was successful songwriter, put the story to music and came up with the tune we know today. Bing Crosby was approached to record the song but turned it down and Gene Autry initially said no, before giving in on the wishes of his wife and recording the now famous song. As they say the rest is history, as Rudolph spun off into TV specials, movies, animated series and books. The song was the second-best selling Christmas song of all time, right behind Crosby’s White Christmas.

Lorna Tatomir of Leamington, Ontario, writes: “In the late 1960s, my Mom and I and five younger siblings lived in an old farmhouse in the hills of Beaver Valley near the Talisman ski resort with lots of snow. Christmas was coming as we loaded the first presents bought with earnings from my first job into the back of my boyfriend’s used but like new 1956 Cadillac. “It was Princess Green with Alpine White top, whitewalls, and enough chrome to stop a tank. Passing all but a gas station, the ride was smooth and luxurious. “Evenings came early in winter and it had snowed all week. The kids had promised to dig a space for the car in front of the driveway so we could get the car off the road, where cars were often lost in snowdrifts until the first snowplow hit them. “We had just enough

space to pull the Caddy up to the farm gate. It was a moonlit night as we unloaded the presents from the oversized trunk and, unable to undo the gate, we climbed over it with the presents. Unknown to us, the kids had dug a six-foot-deep hole on the other side of the gate. We fell in with presents flying everywhere! “The next morning, we saw a little tree standing in deep snow by an abandoned farmhouse. We tied it down on the roof of the Caddy and took it home to its proud place in our corner. Next summer, we drove by that farm-

house and saw a whole row of trees with one missing its tree top! “I took my first driving lessons in that Caddy and a farmer once had to haul me from a snowbank with his tractor. The sound system was great with Simon and Garfunkel, California Dreamin’ and the Beach Boys. That Caddy was a 2-door which kept the kids from falling out, unlike one of my brothers who rolled out of our former 4-door station wagon. “The cold winter turned a young man’s dreams south and the Caddy was sold. It was last seen in a junk car lot behind an old general store in the mountains above Meaford, Ontario.” I’m always looking for stories. Email billtsherk@ sympatico.ca.
